So far Rome has not been destroyed. In other news, I did a Google search
on news.google.com and found a number of news stories about the impending
destruction of the world that is supposed to start on May 21 and end Oct 21.
Here is one such story from the Florida newspaper Orlando-Sentinel:
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/fl-end-time-may-21-20110510,0,6824788.story

There even a countdown clock that appears on the page after a while.
If anyone wants to replicate Festinger, Riecker, and Schachter, you best
get started. There's a facebook page and related sources and one
can use to hook up with the current crop of end-timers.

P.S. Anyone's Spring semester continue after May 21? What will you
do if a student asks I believe that the world will end on May 21, do I
still have to come to class? Note that in the article above a medical
student from Nova Southeastern University gave up an internship
because he believes its the end of the world.

I understood the meaning of Mike S.'s email and the associated Zen reference
(to If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him), and wasn't especially
bothered by it (although Mike, I do wish you could keep your postings more
relevant to the Teaching of Psychologyconsider that a personal plea...).

Scott: For the relevance of Zen to the teaching of Psychology let me suggest
Psychotherapy East and West by Alan Watts.

You may also want to check out Robert Ornstein's Psychology of Meditation.
Was Altered state of consciousness a chaper topic when you were teaching?

RE: [tips] Will There Be a Rome (Italy) on May 12?

2011-05-11 Thread Annette Taylor
APS has had its usual sense of humor about it. The convention starts shortly
after the 21st and they sent out a funny email from Alan Kraut, which I have
reproduced here:

Attend the LAST EVER APS Convention, on Us

Have you seen your spam lately? The end of the world (EOW) is coming - sometime
between May 21 and October 21. (Rounding error?) Butwhat if it's not just
spam

I hesitate to write this as the executive director of a scientific association
and I hope you'll think no less of me (watch it...), but I personally have seen
the signs, so it must be true. Really - signs, literally, as in on billboards
and the sides of busses. Right next to Got Milk?: End of the World coming
May 21 through October 21. (And I don't think they mean as in coming to a
theater near you.)

We at APS Headquarters are horrified. Why? The 2011 APS Convention begins May
26. What if this is our last one? Worse yet - what if it's interrupted? What
if it never starts?

After we calmed down, we thought about how to make the EOW work for every APS
Member coming to the Convention, even for those who have not yet decided. So
... here's our money-back APS Convention Guarantee:

Come to the 23rd Annual APS Convention May 26-29, in Washington DC. Register in
advancehttp://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=wlvwawcabet=1105428398569s=15666e=001_BubOfpEAQWMYgG5o-oPCAXMryVtQWq_1FA3BgD9tMICIw3QhD2u_K5_cLU3VbGN8s9JEigfL3-WBSOT_5oAFx4Wnix0yPg6dnBMHY3zj_bwg5K5KMVl0-PFwEno_dnoKyYHdY-WU7EKHHrgAJp7zraNVGrBfWBdci0Kg7KFpXY=
at our oh-so-reasonable rates. And if the world ends anytime between May 21
and the end of the Convention on May 29, we will refund EVERY PENNY you spent.
No questions asked -- registration, airline ticket, all local transportation,
all hotel costs (INCLUDING MINI-BAR CHARGES), a per diem of $55 a day (the
going rate), plus a couple of happy hour beers. All on us. How can you beat it?
You can't.

So, see you all in DC for the convention (unless...)

So was it for May 11 or May 21?

May 11, 2011 - The end of Rome as we know it.

May 21, 2011 - The end of the world as we know it.

Technically, some think that the May 21 is that start of a
process that ends with the final destruction of the world
as we know on Oct 21, 2011.

YMMV.
