Ed: That was very interesting research.Let me also add that there is some
research re the high incarceration rates of blacks. It has been shown that
blacks are more likely to fall into the traps of criminal investigations than
whites. One variable has been emotional reactions when been examined and
cross-examined. Apparently black defendants act "too cool" when examined and
the jury might perceive this as "implied"guilt. White defendants are more
likely to be forcefully defensive vocally and cause an emotional commoton. Some
attorneys have trained their black defendants to get emotional on the stand.
Staying cool is not advised.
With the innocence project where the death penalty is involved, just remember
that in the U.S Justice system it is better to let a guilty person go free than
to execute an innocent person.

[tips] Clarifications etc

2011-08-15 Thread michael sylvester
Mike P I am the one who is being threatened by some list members.Keep in mind
that some of those who threaten action against me supposedly have already
filtered me from their inboxes.
I do not see contemplating possible action against an institution as action
against an individual, except if one believes as Mitt Romney
claims that Corporations are people. Are universities people?
It am disturbed and shows limited focus when somer members say
what do certain topics have to do with the teaching of psychology.
Ironically someone just posted about the call for papers for a conference on
the Psychology of Violence.Psychology is the study of behavior and not just
behavior systematized scientifically on micro
and molecular levels.I am not going to let myself get affixed to the dull
Eurocentric, cerebralized paradigm that is virtually removed and uninteresting
to many of our students.Students are more interested in contemporary issues
that affect their lives. I am the only one on this list that come up with new
creative ideas and connect social issues to psychology. In virtually all my
posts I show some connection to psychology. Some tipsters have developped a
mind set of blocking all my posts and I look at that as a personal attack. What
type of lesson are we sending to students by telling them t focus on the
messenger instead of the message? And we are teaching them critical thinking
skills? Considering alternative explanations are also standards for critical
thinking.Maybe I am much more broadly educated than some tipsters
and a more divergent and creative thinker.I suspect the various threats
against me on this list is at times personal.I really was expecting more
outrage from my statement "God made Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve." But
it was zilch. But I post a Youtube video of the statements of an Afro-British
citizen and the rest is history.About 99% of my posts on Tips never gets a
response because some tipsters appear to live in the quandary of the
Eurocentric paradigm-a paradigm that is gradually fading as cross-cultural and
other peraspectives emerge. There are people on this list who hate my guts and
it is personal.
Here is a suggestion: STOP THE ROLLER COASTER EFFECT of
commentaries.This whole thing
began when Allen responded to my post on Darcus Howe. Then Stuart McKelvie
followed with a "me too",then Bob Wildblood added his "me too",then
Annette, then Carol, then Nancy and so on.Then it resurrected again because Allen
asked for an apology in a post that had nothing to do with Darcus(it was on
immigrants and Latin Americans). and then a second round of "me too" followed.
I was thinking that was beginning
to look like a higher order Solomon Asch experiment.
So let us stop the "me too" and get back to discussing psychology and things
related to psychology.
As to Nancy comment that I get positively reinforced when someone responds, this
is incorrect. It is called "functional autonomy".
Btw,a listmember call always write to me off list instead of bothering the
whole group. There are no post limit using the off list option.

I not only filter the emails of certain Tipsters, I also filter similarly
worthless emails that are sent to distribution lists at my institution--emails
sent to "all faculty,"all-college," and "all-district." There are others I
filter, but those five (i.e., the two TIPS members and the three institutional

Now, let's get back to teaching, psychology, and the teaching of psychology.

re: [tips] Need to know

2011-08-15 Thread Mike Palij
Prof. Sylvester, allow me to make a few points:

(1) Don't make threats against people in a public forum. It is not
only bad form but it also smells of desperation. Also remember:
what goes around, comes around.

(2) I think the answer to the question about whether one can use
an academic institution's computer to filter/block posts on a
email list is probably "Yes". Especially in a case where the list
is focused on a particular topic (e.g., teaching of psychology)
and the posts typically (a) have little to do with the teaching of
psychology, (b) even when related to psychology, the posts
contain either misinformation or requests for information that
can easily be obtained by doing a Google search (I have made
a number responses to such requests in order to provide a
correction to the statements made in the original post), and
(c) make threats against list members.

NOTE: I readily admit that I have made posts unrelated to
the teaching of psychology but that these constitute a minority
of my posts.

(3) In a playground, it best to play nice with other kids and
not be a bully. A bully might be able to get what they want
in the short run but their reputation may follow them far beyond
the playground.

Yours in good cheer,

I disagree that there are any circumstances under which it is necessary
to
respond to these trolls. I find it hard to believe that anyone on TIPS
gives
these posts any credence at all. The unintended outcome of these
responses is
to give the original posts a much wider audience because the replies
get past
the carefully constructed email filters that TIPsters employ. I , for
one, was
blissfully unaware that he is posting three messages a day because I
only see
the replies to the most egregious (which just shapes more egregious
posts). I
guess my next step is to filter any message with this poster's name in
the body
of the text (although that wouldn't have protected me from this
message).

I agree that in theory filtering out said nuisance with a spam folder
is the way to go...but since we can't get the whole list to "shun" the
individual (which would be the most effective way to go, if no one
responded to his posts unless they were truly serious requests for
information and not mocking and provocative trolls he would either shut
up or only post appropriately.) But it doesn't worksomeone always
responds to him.

Everytime someone responds it ends up in my spam folder so I still see
it. And when someone responds, he is positively reinforced for his
abuse of the list and the individuals who are here to have serious
conversations and learn something.

I wish we could ban him, I truly do. In the absence of that, all we can
do is ignore him and hope that others follow suit. There are so many
people here though, the chances of a mass dose of such effective - and
sorely deserved negative punishment are minimal.

Hi Rick-

I have been using filters (and the delete button) to deal with this
problem and it has helped to some extent. However, a lot of noxious
stuff still comes through as responses to this individual. Even if I
could totally filter out his inane comments I am still troubled that
his offensive comments are posted on this list. This reflects badly on
all of us. Remember, this is a public forum and others might think
that, with our silence, we condone or support his offensive postings. I
agree that moderating the list would be an onerous burden and is not
the way to go. On the other hand I think that there should be a
mechanism whereby someone could be "voted off the island". Such a
mechanism should be used infrequently and only after fair warning, but
if enough people find that the offensive posts continue then they
should be able to say, "get out of here!".

I certainly wouldn't tolerate someone like this at a party in my home.
I'd insist that he leave. Why should we have to put up with it here?

David Cameron calls rioters lazy and selfish, but I am glad that he has hired a
Top cop from the U.S to help the Brits manage issues in the inner
cities.William Bratten has a proven record of managing those riotous issues in
los Angeles,Boston, and New York.He will institute a community policing programs
that will seek cooperating opportunities with the police and the
neigborhoods.The get tough
and swift justice approach are just bandages but they will not solve the
problems.Britain's iberal government policy must also share some of the
blame, but who wants to return to a Torrey iron-fisted
government.Dieffenbaker,one of nmy favorite ex-Canadian premier,has a bio
titled Reluctant Torrey.
Pschology principles can also be applied to Darcus Howe perspective.
Recall that Loftus& Loftus showed problems in eye witness testimony
and if we couple this with the psychology of rumour where transmission of
information goes through levelling, sharpening, and bias stages,it can be
difficult to ascertain the veracity of statements. The person shot by the police
allegedly had a gun but they later found out that he did not fire a gun.
I have an interest in the events in Britain from a cross-cultural
perspective because when immigrants move in and out of cultures
there are different modes of adjustment:integration, assimilation,
marginalization, and separation. There are pros and cons to each of those
modes. There is some degree of consensus that the recent austerity measures may
not have any infuence on the current unrest.
The austerity measures have not kicked in.And agan from a pscho-perceptual
standpoint,I am reminded of the words of a famous U of Chicago sociologist "if
we perceive something as real,it is real in its consequences."

It was disgraceful for the BBC interviewer to suggest that Darcus Howe

What does Darcus Howe have to do with a post on

The BBC's apology to Darcus Howe is an empty gesture, but typical of
an organization that is famously loath to self-criticism.

A real expression of regret would be for the BBC to make the
interview available on its own Web sites (to date, it's only
available in the form or amateur video on video-sharing sites),
along with its apology to Howe and censure the interviewer for
publicly insulting him.

Because of its refusal to take real responsibility, the BBC has
catapulted a figure who was obscure or unknown to many Britons intro
an international folk hero, implicitly confirmed his radical
assessment of the British "insurrection" and made itself into a
laughing stock at best or a byword for news media cowardice at
worst.
