Re: [TMIC] Occupations
Hey All.. I have not written in to the list for a long time but I read everything that comes in. I have re-occurring TM . I am presently on my 3rd re-occurrence. Living in the USA with no health care means I am presently getting through this with consultations with my doctor in Canada. I struggled through 8 years with all this before being diagnosed with TM in 1995. I worked as a Counselor to sexually and physically abused women, children and men. With it being a HIGH stressed job I had to quit in 1998. Since then I married and moved to the USA. I have not worked since then. When I was diagnosed the doctor told me I needed a job with this description . I could not sit or stand for more than 15 minutes at a time. I needed to be wit in 25 feet of a restroom. I could take a day off with a moment's notice. I could leave at a moment's notice. I must be provided a place where I could go rest for 20 minutes two times a day. My job must be a stress free environment. All of this sounded impossible to me but I responded to him with .. I guess I will have to get a Government job then. Carol, I'm so sorry to hear about Jim being in the hospital. That must have been very frightening for both of you. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. And sending Jim a card is an excellent idea - always cheers me up. So prayers will keep coming and a card on the way to let Jim know we're thinking of him. Thanks for letting us know. Re: [TMIC] Occupations
I read all the post and stories on TM but rarely add my input, as I was reading other post on this subject I do not feel so alone. I was working in Atlanta as a warehouse manager in over 200,000 sq ft building, walking end to end all day when I got TM in 04 and now walker at home wheel chair in public. I was on a business trip to Texas when it happened. Company was very supportive at the on set, flew husband out to assist and bring me home once I got out of the hospital and rehab hospital. When I went back to work a month after getting out of rehab they brought me down for a “trial run’ to see if I would have any problems with accessibility and office arrangements. Building was just fine and they even built me an area in a space office to lie down and rest if needed during the day. Then company moved to another facility 20 miles further away, job hours got longer, and more physically demanding. Hours went from 8 a day to 12 and no more rest breaks. Company ended up closing facility last year and I was able to get “office job” with another company. Only problem with new company is they were not there from the beginning of TM and most days they don’t understand just getting up, dressing and getting to work wears me out, the fatigue, constant pain I am in. Was hurting one day, could not get conformable, legs stun, feet burned like they were on fire and all boss could say was “Oh poor baby” I was hurt and disappointed that someone would say that! Old job would have told me to go lie down, put feet up for about 20 minutes then come back once out to warehouse once I was feeling better. So far have been able to put in my 8 hours a day and go to pool 3 days a week. Now I try to rest as much as possible on the weekends so I can get up and do it all over again. Thank you, Janice, for this topic. I was a accountant clerk. I had made the third layoffs of my company, leaving me to be the last accountant clerk for two companies. I had two wonderful bosses and worked 15 mins from home. TM hit me a few weeks before my 38th birthday. After 3 years with TM and it didn't look like I would be returning back to work any time soon. We had been going to Corpus Christi, Texas once a month to see friends and with the gas prices, we decided to retired in CC, TX. Re: [TMIC] Occupations
I have had TM 8+ years (9 in Sept) and cannot go back to either of my jobs. AT first I was paralyzed from the jaw down but got the upper 1/2 back. They say you get most of your recovery back in the first 3 months but I spent the first 6 weeks in a coma so I am very thankful to get what I have. I worked at Continental Airlines ground support and the coroners office. I had hoped and prayed to be walking and go back to my old life but I did have enough time in to retire early which I did 5 years ago. When school is in I tutor children but I don't think I could stay awake or alert to go back to an everyday jobElla **An Excellent Credit Score is 750. See Yours in Just 2 Easy Steps! [TMIC] Occupations
Hi All I was working at the local Health Food store in 2004, as a Nutritional Consultant. My legs had been asleep for awhile - I had gone to the Chiro and the Massage Therapist in case I had a muscle knot somewhere. Nothing. I continued to lose feeling over the course of several weeks, and my legs just hurt. It felt like there were clamps around my knees. It wasn't until a really good looking young man made a pass at my by touching my butt and awaiting a response, that I realized something was dreadfully wrong. By this time I could hardly walk, there was a horrible band around my chest and I was admitted to hospital. An MRI showed a lesion at T 4-5 and I was treated for MS. I fought that decision, and finally two years later after a spinal tap I was diagnosed with TM. In the two years it took for a diagnosis, I fought hard every day to walk, to work, to look after my family (I am a single mom). In September of 2008 a neurologist said that that was it. No point in fighting anymore, as I wasn't going to get better. The damage is done. That sent me into a tailspin, as all I had known was to fight this thing. I do have good mobility. The cold weather sets my legs off. I have a problem with their temperature. Imagine, a heating pad in the summer! I am managed by lyrica, effexor, oxycodone, and flexeril when I need it. On really bad days, when nothing helps, my Dr. lets me have a Demerol shot to help with the pain. I have had lidocaine infusions, they did not help. I am currently off on medical leave, just to rest up and get it together. I have applied for CPP disability. I am back to fighting, but not as hard. It is more like managing now. I am not sure I will ever be able to manage working full time any more. I just get too tired. I lurk in the background. I appreciate so much all the comments that are made: like the accidental passing of gas - that was a relief, I thought I was really out of it when that happened, so I was glad to know it is part and parcel. Like the bladder issues. Like the medication issues, the depression, the suicidal thoughts. Although I do not contribute very often, I want you all to know that I truly appreciate everything that is said on here. And thank you to all of you for sharing. Janet Dunn

This message goes out to Todd and all of my dearest TM friends. On Saturday afternoon, our dear Pam Montz passed away in the hospital. She had been complaining to me about her shoulder and arm pain for over a week. I believe it was her left arm, but I am not sure. I don't even know what to write. I have no details at this time. Linda Cherpenski is calling Dan to see what is going on and will let us know either by phone or email. One of us will get back to you. Pam and I were extremely close. She called me every single day just to check on me and chat. We exchanged friendship gifts, matching earrings, which I will never wear again or I will put them on and never take them off. Which one should I do??? I want to take this time to tell you that each and every one of you is dear to me. Your names, pictures and emails are etched onto my heart and I will carry them with me forever. Pam is in the wings of the Angels, on her way to the Promised Land in the world of Jesus Christ. I know that she is Catholic. I would like to begin a fund for TM research in her name. Where do I begin??? How much can we raise in her name??? I hope that you will all be as generous as possible. I will begin the donation with $300.00. Who will either match me, do me better, or simply send what you can??? When you make your donation make it out to: The Pamela Montz Foundation for Transverse Myelitis Research and I will discuss with Jim Lubin about the best way to handle the donations. AOL EmailYou know, I think the most memorable thing about Pam and her postings was her unique signature. She always signed off with TIAD (tomorrow is another day)...no matter what happened to her or to you, Jude, she always had her eye and heart on a better day. She gave the next day, tomorrow a chance. I will always remember her for that hopeful eye and heart. So I say have a day every so often whether it be good or bad and wear those earrings and set your eye and heart on that -TIAD. Remember her hopeful attitude. When its a bad day remember the next one carries its own possibilities. And when its a good day celebrate it knowing that tomorrow may not be so kind. But most of all remember her for bringing that simple and powerful recognition that TIAD. Lets all carry that forward. Re: [TMIC] Pam. Montz
We all have received the same short message about Pam. I spoke with her daily as she had recently got a free long distance telephone set up. It was fun talking as long as we wanted to. Anyway, she had been complaining about pain in her left shoulder that continued down her arm. Nothing she did for it helped. She had fallen in the house and landed on her shoulder and that''s what I understand what prompted her to go to the hospital. Her doctor wanted her to go but Pam didn't want to. Obviously, she ended up taking her Dr's advice. Once she left for the hospital, I never heard from her again and I thought everything was hunky-dory until I received the short email from Dan regarding Pam passing away. What a beautiful person you are, dear Jude. Few people in this world have a blessing like you in their lives. I am reading the touching notes everyone is writing and thinking how kind each one of you are. God brought us together...how wonderful for us. [TMIC] Update on JIM and so sad about Pam,
Got home from the hospital this evening and as I usually do,sat down in front of the computer to see what had been written today. How sad but also happy to know that Pam has been called home into the loving arms of the GOD that she loves so much. I also will miss her writings to the list and the TIAD that I didn't figure out for some time. This morning the hospital called and said they were moving Jim into ICU as they think he has Pneumonia. My son and and 2 of our precious grandaughters drove about 3 hours to see Jim. It was wonderful to see them and put sunshine in Jim's room. The ones that came are the almost 8 yr old twins and mommy and the 11 yr old and 2 yr old stayed home. They stayed overnight and we went to church this morning and then went to the hospital after lunch to see granpa for a little while before they had to head back home. There is still 5 days of school for all of them. Daddy is a teacher. Anyway tomorrow morning early they are doing a bronchialscopy test. I will kepp you posted and we thank you for your prayers. carol **An Excellent Credit Score is 750. I also was shocked to read about Pam. We had been responding to each other's emails frequently lately. She was such a neat person and had been through so much. She sent me a picture of she and her family - she was so pretty. Re: [TMIC]ABOUT PAM MONTZ......PLEASE READ THIS... IT IS FOR REAL
I am so stunned and so so so so sorry. This is so sudden and sad. My condolences to you and Jude and to Dan and Pam's family. Peace, Akua I was able to reach Dan and we talked for almost an hour. My heoes out to him and the entire family. I believe Dan is still in shock, but their son is arriving tomorrow and I know what a comfort this will be. Their son, his wife, and Pam's 4 grandchildren were to arrive July 15th for a visit. Pam was so looking forward to seeing all of them as it has been a year since the last visit. Here is Pam's poem: I KNOW TODAY MUST BE VERY HARD PLEASE DO NOT OVER DO TRY TO BE CALM I KNOW YOU WILL CRY YOUR HEART OUT THAT'S A NORMAL THING TO DO YOU STILL WILL HAVE YOUR MEMORIES NO ONE CAN TAKE THAT AWAY FROM YOU! --
