Re: [TMIC] Swine flu vaccine
I believe the recommendation is for all of us to get the flu shots. There will be at least two: One or two shots separated by three weeks for H1N1, Then another for the regular flu. This is what I'v read, but this may not be the final recommendation F
RE: [TMIC] Swine flu vaccine
With regard to Flu shots, Swine Flu shots, and Pneumonia shots, I personally believe in taking all 3. The people or persons on the list that have pointed to these shots as the cause of TM is totally unsubstantiated. There is no link as of now between these shots and TM. We all may have some guess as to the cause of our individual occurrence but no one really knows for sure. I welcome a dialogue with the list as to the cause of the occurance of TM. Who among you really know for sure what caused the condition? Lastly the taking of the shots is a personal decision. Personally I never had a Flu shot prior to coming down with TM 12 years ago.and I have had one for each of the 12 years since...never with a bad reaction. Your decision is your own! Just my 2 cents! That's kind of my question also, Traceyhas this ever been addressed to Dr. Kerr to get any feedback from him..? My neuro told me to go ahead and get the flu shot last year, which I did with no ill effects. I have talked with others with TM though and they have said that their neuro's were adamant to NOT get the flu shot. Now with this swine flu thing going around I'm really questioning what we should do. I have a new neuro now and I'll be asking him to see what he says, but why all the conflicting answers..? This is so ridiculous in this day and age to not be able to get a simple, straight answer to this question. Kevin Weilacher From: Tracey L. RE: [TMIC] Swine flu vaccine
Hi all, I saw Dr. Kerr for years and I think I recall at the second symposium, one of the doctors stating that he would never take the flu shots, nor would have his children get them. Dr. Kerr never advised me to have the flu shot, nor did he advise against it. I don't think it is something he can discuss because of where he works and how he gets paid. I did have a pneumonia shot this year because of my heart surgery, yet was advised by my neuro here and my internist to inform them immediately of any neurological symptoms. I will not have the flu shot, and especially not the swine flu shot. I have been advised against them both by my current team of doctors and I do believe they have my interests at heart, not any drug company. Once again, every person is different and what my doctors advise me, is not necessarily true for anyone else. Everyone should ask their doctors and then make their own decision for their health. I do believe that there are some that get TM from vaccines, it is one of the risk factors stated. Luck of the draw, 1 in every 100, 000 is pretty good odds, though it sucks if you are the one! Re: [TMIC] Swine flu vaccine
I was hit by the episode of TM in October 2005 and my Neurologist has not allowed me to have the regular flu shot since. My TM was labelled ideopathic so, not knowing what the cause was, I believe they are erring on the side of caution in case the reaction of my immune system to the vaccine may cause another episode. I recently called my Neurologist to ask if I should take the H1N1 flu vaccine when it comes out. The secretary called back to say the doctor said no because it is too new and the possible side-effects are unknown. She doesn't want to take the chance of me ending up back in hospital. I'm in Canada where they are going to add an adjuvant to the vaccine. According to what I've read, adjuvants are chemical boosters used to elicit an early, high and long-lasting immune response. It appears they do not feel the non-adjuvant vaccine has been working well enough in tests. I can see why my Neuro doesn't want to take the chance of upsetting my immune system too much. I gather a rush to get a vaccine out happened in the 90s because of a flu epidemic that started in the U.S. military. They were hurrying to get people vaccinated and there many became ill (died?) and some were paralyzed by the vaccine. The man in charge lost his job over this debacle. Sorry I don't have the exact figures, names, etc. I heard the man in question being interviewed a few months ago but didn't document the facts. Anyway, it comes down to the fact we each have to do what is comfortable for ourselves but I think everyone should look into the situation very carefully before deciding. Regards. It had been suggested that among other things, TM could be caused by the flu, a virus, whatever. Some of us were convinced of that and refused to take the vaccine. I haven't had one in four years. Others felt having checked with their doctors that we should have it and continued to get it. Question: What's going to happen now with the flu vaccine? Will some of us still be ambivalent? R

I remember the day I got the shotthe nurse was extolling the virtues of that vaccine...telling me how it was going to prevent me from getting ALL of the strains of flu viruses out there . After I got the shot she handed me a copy of the paperwork I had signed..when I got home I read it and one of the side effects listed was Transverse Myelitis. That day I didn't know what TM was so didn't think much of it until I was hit, paralyzed and diagnosed. Wish I'd read the paperwork FIRST but we tend to believe whatever our health care providers tell us. My suggestion to anyone considering getting the swine flu vaccine or the seasonal flu vaccine is this: insist on a preservative-free vaccine. ~ Lynn In a message dated 9/1/2009 7:46:33 P.M. I wound up paralyzed from the flu shot I received 12 years ago so I won't be getting the swine flu vaccine either...! By the way, I haven't had the flu or a cold for 12 years. I take supplements and really keep up my levels of Vitamin D3that stuff is a gold mine and it's not expensive. The reason people get the flu in the winter is not because of the cold weatherit's because they don't get enough sunshinethat's what it takes for our bodies to make vitamin D3. Hugs, Lynn
