[PATCH] JNDIRealm does not work with CLIENT-CERT auth method

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-06-09 09:14 ---
to @Mario Ivankovits:
I think tha JDBCRealm should store DN on database (it can map DN via view if
someone needs this). Looking into LDAP is good for JNDI realm.

if it's a valid bug, right ?

-1 about the NPE change. I don't want to add null checks in every
method to handle the one broken webapp. This doesn't make any sense.

OTOH, here's something I would accept if you want to do that cleanup:
the clear() would associate the facade with a (static final)
HTTPServletRequest implementation which would return an ISE for every
method.
And do the same for the response facade.

I think it's not worth the pain, so I would be +0 for the change.
I realized some time later that this doesn't work, as the response
facade uses methods from CoyoteResponse (for the response commit state).
Since I can't provide an acceptable solution, I'll have to accept your
polish if you think it is useful, and I change my vote to 0.

enough to be included with the other tomcat product documentation IMHO.

Subject: FAQ location

Currently I have the FAQ at:
http://tomcatfaq.sourceforge.net/

I have just finished tweaking it (and added some more content) into the
look
and feel used by the rest of the tomcat site. You can see it here:
http://cvs.apache.org/~funkman/faq/

(I is horrible on grammar and spellng, so I hope to clean up the worst
of
those mistakes this upcoming week. Sorry if some of the sentences are
so
horribly constructed that it hurts the brain.)

Is there any preference to where the FAQ should live?
   SourceForge? (Status quo)
   My public_html account on cvs.apache.org?
Merged under jakarta-tomcat-site? (Then anyone with access may make
edits)
   Other?

I am content maintaining this myself (status quo) by using CVS with
sourceforge and adding anyone as needed.

If you want to see the CVS version (and build):
export
CVSROOT=:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/tomcatfaq
# Just press enter at password prompt
cvs -d login
cvs co jakarta
cd jakarta
ant

context.xml not bound from WAR file

Summary: context.xml not bound from WAR file
   Product: Tomcat 4
   Version: 4.1.24
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: Windows NT/2K
Status: NEW
  Severity: Normal
  Priority: Other
 Component: Catalina
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This isn't a bug, per se, but it is a wish.

I've successfully deployed a Web app that has a JDNI data source defined in its
context.xml using the Ant deploy task. The WAR file has context.xml in the
meta-inf directory.

But when I deploy the app by putting the WAR file in the TOMCAT_HOME/webapps
directory, the app fails because the JDNI data source isn't bound.

There's a workaround I found at O'Reilly:

http://oreillynet.com/cs/user/view/cs_msg/14252

However, it would be nice if the app could get the context.xml info if it finds
it in the WAR file's meta-inf directory. No steps required beyond dropping the
WAR file into the webapps directory. Thanks - MOD

security of server.xml in tomcat

2003-06-09 Thread Mohamed Tagari
Hi,

Is there any way of instantiating the password and username
parameters for connecting to a database in the application code rather
than having it as plain text in the server.xml.

As having the username and password as plain text is not
very secure..

Any help/information will be apprectiated..

The database will be containing sensitive information, hence all passwords
and usernames have to be protected..

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-06-09 16:56 ---
I have overseen, that you talk about JDBCRealm, this bug depends on JNDIRealm.
For sure, you have to store the DN in the database, but the resulting principal
should contain the username as username and not the DN.

A user might have multiple certificates, but it is always the same user.
Or a user revoke his certificate an creates a new one, mabe this result in a
new DN (other provider, new e-mail address, ...)

If we do not solve this problem in the realm's we move such logik to the
application. The results is a tomcate-user to application-user mapping, which
(i think) should not be needet.

This does the same thing on 4.1 with JDK 1.4. Looks like the popular solution
is to go to JDK 1.3 or use IBM's JDK. This doesn't work if you have to use JDK
1.4. Does Jakarta have a solution to this?

Internet Explorer 6.0 Duplicate Requests IE PLEASE HELP

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-06-09 18:16 ---
I followed what you have requested and here is the difference between the two
For IIS alone
GET /admin/account.asp
HTTP/1.1 302 Object moved
Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0
Date: Mon, 09 Jun 2003 18:07:44 GMT
Location: ../index.shtml
Connection: Keep-Alive
Content-Length: 135
Content-Type: text/html
Set-Cookie: ASPSESSIONIDQQGGQLVQ=NPMOPHDBBEPJAHDCPICDGOBA; path=/
Cache-control: private

headtitleObject moved/title/head
bodyh1Object Moved/h1This object
may be found a HREF=../index.shtmlhere/a./body

And for IIS with Tomcat it is
GET /jsp/calendar/calendar.jsp
HTTP/1.1 302
Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0
Date: Mon, 09 Jun 2003 18:06:56 GMT
Set-Cookie: JSESSIONID=BC7C3F989CA9E8447B631260657A5304; Path=/jsp
Location: http://www.brainfuse.com
Content-Type: text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1
Content-Length: 0

One of the few things to notice is :
1. There is response message after the response code from IIS with Tomcat
2. There is no Connection:Keep Alive flag
3. the cookie is pointing to /jsp not to /
Aparently this problem has been eliminated after I installed the latest IE
cummulative patches from microsoft. But the problem is what about all these
other clients that are having Win XP and IE 6.0 that DONOT upgrade.

Let me know what you guys think?

I've marked this bug that I submitted as invalid because I'm retracting it
completely. For the record, Jasper2 fully supports JSR-045 on J2SE 1.4 and the
SourceDebugExtension attribute from the class file that Jasper generates
contains a fully conformant SMAP.

This bug was submitted in error due to a misunderstanding between myself and my
development team on how WebLogic JSP debugging was being supported and the
differences with the Tomcat 5 implementation. As a result of this
misunderstanding, I posted this bug in error. I'm sorry for any inconveniences
that this may have caused to anyone.

Simply FYI for the interested, the next release of MyEclipse Enterprise
Workbench (www.myeclipseide.com), which is scheduled for release on 6/16/2003,
will contain full source level JSP debugging support for Tomcat 5 using its JSR-
045 implementation.

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-06-09 18:41 ---
I executed the test again with a page that doesn't require login in:
Here are the results from IIS:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0
Date: Mon, 09 Jun 2003 18:31:58 GMT
Connection: Keep-Alive
Content-Length: 12348
Content-Type: text/html
Set-Cookie: ASPSESSIONIDQQGGQLVQ=ABNOPHDBFFOGJKPNOKEPCEJJ; path=/
Cache-control: private
Page content goes here just html

Here are the results from Tomcat as ISAPI plugin:
GET /jsp/index.jsp
HTTP/1.1 200
Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0
Date: Mon, 09 Jun 2003 18:32:20 GMT
Set-Cookie: JSESSIONID=2BB72CC543D77619DA8376588DC0A800; Path=/jsp
Content-Type: text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1
Page content goes here just html

And here are the results from Tomcat as Standalone:
GET /jsp/index.jsp
!doctype html public -//w3c//dtd html 4.0
transitional//en http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/strict.dtd;
html

You will notice when Tomcat as ISAPI,
1. There is no response code ( I don't think it is a big deal. )
2. there is no Content Length ( I think this is a big one ) .
3. The Content Type is different there is character set appended.
4. The Keep Alive flag is not there.

When using Tomcat as a standanlone, there are no headers what so ever, I am not
sure why but this is the case.

Just a thought, I can't see how having the username and password in code
is any more secure. Prying eyes could have equal access to both.

Hi,

Is there any way of instantiating the password and username
parameters for connecting to a database in the application code rather
than having it as plain text in the server.xml.

As having the username and password as plain text is not
very secure..

Any help/information will be apprectiated..

The database will be containing sensitive information, hence all
passwords
and usernames have to be protected..

RE: tomcat as isapi

2003-06-09 Thread Mladen Turk

Did you try to put the question on the tomcat-users list?
Think you will find better support there.
Also you will need to specify the TC version, the connector version, the
OS, etc...

From my experience, some search engine like google might help you.

 Dear Sirs and Madams--

Have you had any luck recently in running Tomcat as an ISAPI
 plugin (by extension)?

Sure we have a humble opinion that we are developing a working
solutions.

We are having problems with cookies
being dropped when running as a plugin, and any suggestions
you might have would be deeply appreciated.

You will need to tell more about that, but again, try the users list.

ok store the username/password as an encrypted text string and use the
JAAS API to a: encrypt it in the first place, and b: read it back into
the the application from the encrypted text string in the server.xml
file.

I was looking into this myself (not using tomcat but in another
Oracle/Java project), but the time it would take for me to implement
and test the secure/encrypted version (2 days including test) was
deemed to be not worthwhile. C'est la vie.

Re: FAQ location

2003-06-09 Thread Tim Funk
I checked out jakarta-site2 and jakarta-tomcat-site and made the changes
locally.

Because of the print preview functionality and my inability to get the
correct lev sidebars - I didn't use Anakia (for the faq). I continued to use
the already built xslt transformations. So all I did was create a subdir
called xdocs-faq at the same level as xdocs then added the style tasks to
build.xml. So ultimately publishing stays the same - html files get created
via the build process and then committed to cvs.

A preview:
http://cvs.apache.org/~funkman/docs/
The source:
http://cvs.apache.org/~funkman/jakarta-tomcat-site.zip
Does this seem like the right way to go? Is Anakia still useful compared to
xslt? If Anakia is still the way to go - can someone someone point me in the
right direction (to keep consistent). Even if I no one looks at the above -
does it sound like the right way to go? (Just trying refer not to cleanup a
giant commit.)

Last but not least, will I need an account on daedalus? Or do I notify
someone to peform the cvs update?
