In the conf directory, modify the tomcat.conf , search for port 80, but I
think the default is 8080. You can change that to whatever you like from
that file.

Hi
I have got tomcat 3.2.3 and mod_jk working with apache 1.3.19
But I don't want to serve the servlets under port 80 where apache is.
And I don't want to run tomcat as stand alone.
Is it possible to tell mod_jk and tomcat to host the servlets on a
secure port other than 80, under apache? and have apache running on
port 80 for static files.
ie. http://myhost.com/statics/show.html
http://myhost.com:XXX/servlets/Hello   instead of
http://myhost.com/servlets/Hello
I understand that this is possible if I don't use mod_jk and run tomcat
as stand alone.
But I want to use mod_jk and apche as explained above.

Thanks

This is my first time doing any of this. I guess first off I need to try to

On the fist page of Wall Street Journal today there is an article stating
that Microsoft is dropping support for java in its WindowsXP.  XP
customers will have to download java plugin to execute java code (applets I
suppose the article means).  Not only that, Windows will tighten
security so much so that even java applets might be viewed as possible
security threats!
Once I read that , I could not remember reading any thing this stupid for
a long time:
1. How on earth is java a security threat?  Compared to word and
other Microsoft Macros any thing is secure, I think!!
2. Microsoft says that users can change security settings on their
XP/Browser and can just download a java support.  Is Microsoft OR any
one in his/her right mind expect users to do this.  A process that
requires computer savvys and more time than it might be worth it for
some.
3.  I feel this is the end for client side java.  Do you
agree?

      I believe that your
  problem lies in the "\r\n\n" at the end of your request.  The spec doesn't specify the \r as a valid character
  here, but since Apache works with my Telnet, I'm
  guessing that both "\r\n\r\n" and "\n\n" will
  work.

  hi, I've copied a java program that

  not against my Apache site running on NT.  I've
  ran the java program from the Apache site and from
  another box.  Sockets are created just fine,
  it just looks like Apache is not serving up the
  file.  I thought it might be a problem with
  HTTP/1.0 because Apache is HTTP 1.1 but no luck.
  Here's what's being written out : (note this is working on other sites :-) )
  writer.write("GET " + file + " HTTP/1.0\r\n\n");
  writer.flush(); regards, tony

- server.xml configures Tomcat.

- mod_jk.conf-auto is created by Tomcat based on your
  server.xml configuration and can be included in Apache's
  httpd.conf.

or

- My preferred way is to put all of the mod_jk directives in
  httpd.conf myself and maintain them manually...no surprises,
  but others have luck with the automated method.

- workers.properties is used by mod_jk to figure out how to
   connect to Tomcat (IP address, port number, load balancing,
   etc.). If everything's on the same machine, the default file
   is fine. You can use ajp12 or ajp13 workers by those names
   from the default settings.

- uriworkermap.properties is IIS/ISAPI only...I think.  No need to
  worry about it.

The only other file I've had to mess with is tomcat-users.xml to set
up authentication through Tomcat on one site where a webapp
relied on it. Otherwise, I just stick to Apache's security.

Hope that helps.

I've a strange behavior. I develope on a win2k with tomcat 3.2.1 (under
Visual Age) and I use a cookie to trace the users logon (I use a custom
tag) . Everything works fine... After that I port my application on my test
machine, a FreeBsd with tomcat 3.2.2 and Jdk 1.2 but no cookies are
set!

Is there a bug or there is something I'm wrong

thanks

Hi,
This should be an easy one. But after doing a search
on the mailing list on "Threads" I got almost 3000
results with the first fifty not relevant to my
question.

On Tomcat 3.1.1 when I start it I see about 15
threads of java processes on my Mandrake Linux
machine. Apparently only the first one does anything.
 I am running it on a laptop for jsp development
purposes only and is not open to the public, so at
most I will need maybe two. Any idea how I can lower
the number of java processes spawned?

Thanks!

2001-06-27 Thread Nael Mohammad

Nick,

You need to understand that this is just like a community you live in, if
you seek help, Just Ask! But don't attack the very product we're all
striving hard to get ready for GA. We've all spent numerous hours working
with Tomcat.

If we can't help you, it's not because we don't want to, maybe we've never
experience what your going through. And rather, then everyone else flaming,
it just make sense to understand Nick's frustration.

Lack of documentation is a result of this product being new technology and
it's open source. True there are books on Linux, but how many are backed
some sort of Linux Distribution company or some big name publisher.

To all of you "tomcat fans",

Attacking me with these immature e-mails shows the following things:
1. not accepting other people's opinions and experiences
2. blindly repeating the same things over and over again.

1st of all - how many of you have installed Tomcat with about 30 virtual
servers with integrated Apache behind a load balancer?
When you make this work - then you can tell me how good Tomcat is.
I tried it - it works - but it's not stable and mod_jk is slow when you have

this multihost environment.

2nd of all - you are right, there is no sign "Get your complete and
comprehensive documentation here". But this doesn't solve the problem with
the lack of documentation. Linux is open source too - look how many books
are
there on Linux.

3rd - it's not my job to hire somebody to write a book about Tomcat. I'm
just
stating that I will not use it until somebody writes something.
Unfortunately
I don't have the time to write a book about Tomcat.

4th - reading your solution about writing a shell or Perl script for the
servlets mapping problem shows that you have no idea about SHELL scripting
nor PERL programming (and I guess Tomcat either)

5th - I haven't met anybody in this mailing list who has a complex
installation of Tomcat with a lot of virtual hosts , different ports and
load
balancers. So - who will help me in situation like this? No books , no
support, no help from the mailing list.

Thanks
Nick

TO check the port numbers, just see what process ID is and then do a netstat

This will work in *nix but it doesn't tell you if it is running
correctly/the right port/etc... The best thing for this is
testing from the root server up and/or using telnet/ping to
check to see if a server is listening on the port.

Verify that tomcat has actually started. To check this, for unix and Linux,
I would just do a "ps -ef|grep tomcat" or whatever the name of that process
is.

This will check to see if the process is running. Or you can grep Java make
sure some java process is running. Another thing you can try is the log
files and see if you have any errors upon startup.

I recently installed Tomcat 3.2.2. When I start the server,
it appears to start correctly (no error messages). However,
when I try to execute the example SnoopServlet from the
browser by typing:

http:localhost:8080/examples/servlet/SnoopServlet

I get an error message indicating that the page cannot
be opened. I get the exact same error even if I don't
start the server at all.

Any suggestions on how to see what is actually happening
so that I can solve this problem. How can I tell if the server
is actually running?

First off http://localhost:8080/
Then http://localhost:8080/examples/
etc...

You can also ping your localhost on port 8080.
If you use 'tomcat run' to start tomcat and it doesn't return to
the dos/shell prompt then you will also know you're still running.

FYI - Please note that one of the rules on this list is all messages

No, i guess you are wrong! You can use either get(doGet) or post(doPost)

sends data through get' header and Post sends data through new http

Hi folks !

Being a newbie concerning the use of Tomcat I am marvelling about the
following :

On SunOS 5.8 I have installed Tomcat 3.2.1 connected to Apache 1.3.19
via mod_jk.so with both an AJP12 (port 8007) and an AJP13 (port 8009)
handler installed.

The Apache Server is listening on ports 80, 1080, 2080 and 8080, while,
for test purposes, I added a Tomcat Http Connection handler on
port 7080.

Now, we have written a test servlet with differing doGet and doPost
methods and an HTML page containing a form that uses method POST, and
we observe the following behaviour :

o When defining the form's action to directly invoke the servlet via
  Tomcat on port 7080, method doPost is invoked,

o however, when defining action to invoke the servlet via Apache
  on one of the other ports mentioned above, always method doGet
  is invoked.

Is there any explanation for that - at least to me - surprising
behaviour ? Did I overlook anything ? Or is it intended to work
that way ?

Thank you very much for your kind assistance
Rainer

That was a solution that come in my mind also.
But, I don't think you need to build you're own time-out mechanism.
There already one in place.
If you register a SessionBinding listener, you can be notified on
valueUnbound when the session has expire.
I do some testing with the default value for session timeout ( which I think
is 30 sec.) and is working pretty good.
You can modify this value from tomcat setting or from you're code.

BTW, HttpSession has a method named setMaxInactiveInterval which take as
input a int value.
The problem were is that his method is obsolete, and I think I read some
ware that it doesn't have a replacement...right?

I think if everybody reads the bottom header, its that simple. I'm tired of
my email box being filled up with unnecessary discussions about subscribing
and unsubscribe. This is a trivial matter, you unsubscribe from the email
you subscribed from. How hard is that to understand.

One person stated earlier " There is no cure for laziness" and I would have
to agree. The reason, you can't unsubscribe is because you're using a
different email address than what you subscribe with.

Obviously a lot of people are having trouble unsubscribing from this
list. Most likely these people have tried the simple/direct way of
unsubscribing -- sending email to

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

-- without success. That's because that way only works if you send
the unsubscribe request from the address you are subscribed from.
But
many people receive/send their email from a different address than
the
one they originally subscribed from.

Some people (including me and others) have posted instructions on
how
to unsubscribe when faced with this situation. But it's not clear
that the right people are seeing these messages (I guess you can't
blame them too much, because they're probably not reading the
messages
too closely, because the whole point is they want to get off this
list). But I'm going to make another attempt to post these
instructions in the hope that it will help someone. I'll try to
make
the subject line such that even those people that are deleting
everything from the list will stop and notice it (for the people
that
want to stay on the list, sorry about that :-).

First of all, you need to find out what address tomcat-user thinks
you're subscribed from. To do that, look at the headers of a
message
from the list, and you'll see something like:

Return-Path:
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

The Return-Path header line includes the address tomcat-user thinks
you're subscribed from -- with the "@" changed to a "=" to avoid
having two "@"'s in the Return-Path. In this example, that's
joe=domain.com, which translates to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Once you know that address, you can unsubscribe by sending email to

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Voila!

So, if you are having trouble unsubscribing, please give this a try.

That's because the file is dynamically generated when you start tomcat and
should be in the conf directory under tomcat.

add the JAVA_HOME=/usr/bin/java  and TOMCAT_HOME=/opt/tomcat <--- (this
depends on where your tomcat and java is installed in) to your tomcat.sh
file and that should work. Then run it.

I'd suggest you to set up by hand the environment variable TOMCAT_HOME to
point to the directory where tomcat is installed. Once you've started it,
you have to point to your browser to the host:port where it's running.

Subject: Cookie Problem

Hi there,
   I have a problem using Cookies in my servlet.I am able to create the
cookie and log in but then I have an option where I ask the user if he
wanst to save his password and there I write a cookie for say 9 days.But
when he wnts to logut ,I execute the following code.
 out= response.getWriter();

   HttpSession session = request.getSession(true);
   session.invalidate();

Cookie[] cookies = request.getCookies();

for(int i=0; i < cookies.length; i++) {
Cookie thisCookie = cookies[i];
   String name = cookies[i].getName();
   String value = cookies[i].getValue();
   //out.println("  " + name + " : " + value);
if (thisCookie.getName().equals("user")) {
// Delete the cookie by setting its maximum age to
zero
//out.println(" Before deleting user " );
Cookie killcookie = new Cookie("user",null);
//Cookie killcookie = new
Cookie("user",thisCookie.getValue());
thisCookie.setMaxAge(0);
cookies[i].setMaxAge(0);
killcookie.setMaxAge(0);
//killcookie.setPath("/");
response.addCookie(killcookie);
killcookie.setMaxAge(0);
response.addCookie(killcookie); //merciless!!!
out.println(" new - After deleting user " );
}
}

The weird thing is I am not able to deleet the cookies in IE 5 by using
the above method.I can still see the cookies which I had created,in the
Cookies folder.They are not deleted.I heard somewhere that it takes 4-5
mins to delete cookies in IE.But then its been a day now and I know
Windows's slow but then this just takes the cake.AM I doing something
wrong here(it seems to work fine with NEtscape and in other versions of
IE). If you've an efficient code or mechanism on how to tackle the Logout
problem which's really bugging me,do tell me.
  Also,if setMaxAge is not used while creating the cookie then its not
written to the Cookies folder.DOes it exist only in the browser header in
this case?
Thanks and Regards,
Shravan

Set the host name in the httpd.conf file for domain name resolution, use the
ServerName directive to do this. Also, might want to check that your host
file specifies the name of your system and is associated with the system IP

If I had this, I'd feel the same way. ;-) I guess it takes proprietary
products and knowledge get you there.

Of course, as complex as products are today, that's what it'd cost to
compete as well.

The real world is a tough place for sure. Not much room for people at this

RE: Admin User Name and Password????

2001-02-13 Thread Nael Mohammad

One more thing might help you:

Simple,

using the tomcat admin feature, you can specify the context to be whatever
you like. To access the admin feature, you need to set it first using the
tomcat-user.xml file located in your conf directory. An example that I have
below works just fine for me. After that then you should be able to add the
context you like anywhere so long as tomcat knows where it's going.

In Linux: /tomcat/conf/tomcat-user.xml

After that got http://localhost:8080/admin and bam... you should now be able
to access the admin feature.

Now you should be able to login.

The above file is the exact content in the tomcat-user.xml file.

RE: How do I connect JNDI in Tomcat 4.0 to JNDI in JBoss?

2001-02-13 Thread Nael Mohammad

Simple,

using the tomcat admin feature, you can specify the context to be whatever

After you login, just follow the examples that are already in place and you
should figure how to add the context. If worse comes to worse, result to the
manual.

How do I get the JNDI context in Tomcat to look in JBoss JNDI context for
the  Remote object ?

RE: Admin User Name and Password????

2001-02-13 Thread Nael Mohammad

According to the documentation, it indicates that you have to change one of
the values to "admin". For example, you would want to change the values for
tomcat to say admin instead of default user tomcat. Change anything that
says tomcat to admin and then set the password to what ever you want it to
be.

RE: Newbie needs help ASAP!

2001-02-07 Thread Nael Mohammad

Have you read the users guide that comes with tomcat when the install is
completed? It provides you with a detailed step by step instructions on how
to do so.

I'm assuming WINDOW$ platform:

So here it goes, you need to have the Mod_jserv.dll specified in the
tomcat-apache.conf file. I usually do it in to first line. It works fine.
Every time you restart apache and tomcat, this file is regenerated so make a
back up of it and rename when you need to. Secondly, the tomcat and apache
have to be restarted. I usually start apache then tomcat.

And make sure you are using WIN32 files and not unix or Linux.

BTW: The minimalist guide is ok, but the one that comes with Tomcat is more
detailed and complete.

Hi All,

I am tryint to integrate the TomCat with my Apache Web Server and then run
some servlets on the browser. My Apache Server is configured properly and
works fine. I can even start and stop the TomCat perfectly. I was just
following the "Tomcat - A Minimalistic User's Guide" ..which is pretty
good..but I got stuck at the point where I have to include tomcat.conf in
the httpd.conf. If I use the following it gives me syntax error :

And how do I copy the mod_jserv or the required modules from TomCat to

As far as the libraries I jsut simply took my old apache

let me have server push through HTTP, and this
looks like it could work. How does this look
on the client side? Do you simply use a
URLConnection and read from the InputStream
like it was a normal stream?
