JNDI Error / Servlet Error / Tomcat Admin Error !!!
Hi Guys, I am tring to use JNDI for an SQL Server database in my Struts/Tomcat 5.0.16 application. The fact is that this has been working until today where I added a few new actions that do not even use the database and yet for some reason mayhem has ensued. I am using a Servlet that has a load on startup true. In this servlet's init I am callinga method to lookup the resource try { Context ctx = new InitialContext(); dataSource = (DataSource) ctx.lookup(java:comp/env/jdbc/iqdb); if (dataSource == null) { logger.error(initDataSource: database pool was null); throw new ServletException(The database could not be loaded.); } } catch (NamingException nE) { logger.error(initDataSource: + nE.getMessage()); throw new ServletException(The database could not be loaded.); } When i boot up Tomcat it manages to find the data source and connections can be obtianed from it. However using the new actions that I created (which I have basically cut all the code out so that they merely exist and do nothing) causes my Servlet to re initialise!!! Why on earth is my init() being called again anyway? And to add insult to injury I now get 2003-12-17 11:00:00 StandardWrapperValve[iqController]: Allocate exception for servlet iqController At throws this on another method called by init() that calls dataSource.getConnection() And one last thing...I though I would check out the Tomcat Admin app to see if anything was up with my server.xml and it cannot show my resource to the data source ... it throws javax.servlet.ServletException: Exception retrieving attribute 'driverClassName' org.apache.jasper.runtime.PageContextImpl.doHandlePageException(PageContextImpl.java:867) org.apache.jasper.runtime.PageContextImpl.handlePageException(PageContextImpl.java:800) admin.resources.listDataSources_jsp._jspService(listDataSources_jsp.java:429) And even removing the whole block out of my server.xml so there is no JNDI resource still does not stop this error above from occuring I don't really know where to start with all these issues. I am sure they are all related. FONT SIZE=1 FACE=VERDANA,ARIAL COLOR=BLUE --- QAS Ltd. Error 500 - Internal servlet error - unable to compile class for jsp
Hi All, I am hoping someone might be able to explain the problem I have come across. I am new to Tomcat and have just installed Tomcat4112 on a Windows2000 machine with IIS5 and j2sdk1.4.0. I am trying to run a webapp but keep getting the above error. I am running Tomcat as an NT service so decide to stop this and start it up from the bat file. When running like this I was able to view the jsp pages without a problem, there was no longer any errors. I then shutdown Tomcat and restart the NT service and then had the ability to see the pages without the error. However any page that had not been accessed while I was running Tomcat from the startup.bat still came up with the compile error. Why do I need to view each page while running Tomcat from the startup script before they can be viewed without the unable to compile class for jsp error with the NT service? Any pointers would be me much appreciated. Regards Sarah - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Servlet error occurs - servlet not available until tomcat restarted
This is rediculous! Perhaps there's something here that I don't understand but I'm seeing that if an error occurs on one of my web pages due to user input of data (presuming that a form is being processed by a servlet), that the servlet is going to give an error for every user thereafter until I restart the machine, regardless of whether user input should create an error or not. Now, obviously I should handle this error better, but I could not think of a less graceful way of responding to an error, than to take it out on every single user that attempts to use the servlet thereafter! Is there some setting that I need to set or something that I need to do, to get my Servlets NOT to do this? Thanks. Can you run the same code outside of a servlet context? If so then it sounds like classpath problems. If not, can you re-install DB2? Sounds like your installation might be bad or you might be missing some components. dwh [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: (Thu Aug 01 15:52:50 2002) pid= 2192 jdbcFSQLConnect(): The levels of db2java.zip ((null)) and db2jd (n010415) do not match, einfo= -111 (client IP = 10.3.13.34) Now, I can make out that there is mis-match between db2java.zip and db2jd levels... RE: DB2/servlet error....Help need please
As much as I would rather not help you debug an IBM product, if the code does not work in either tomcat or your Websphere application, then it isn't a tomcat issue at all, and most likely it isn't even a servlet issue, but a JDBC driver issue. If you are saying that everything works in a servlet context on Websphere, but NOT on tomcat, that would be different, but it sounds like it isn't working at all. Is that correct? Re: DB2/servlet error....Help need please
Then it is most likely a classpath problem. You need to make sure the db2 jars are on the classpath for Tomcat. Looks like you're on NT or Win2K, not sure which version of Tomcat... I think your best bet is to modify tomcat.bat and just add all the db2 jars to the classpath there. (Someone please feel free to jump in with a more correct way to do this... and I think the recommended way changed from Tomcat 3 to 4? This has always confused me...) dwh [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sorry Dennis to skip answering the first part... well yes DB2 connectivity works fine outside the servlet context... Re: jsp servlet error in NetBeans
Subject: Re: jsp servlet error in NetBeans From: Joey DiPrimo [EMAIL PROTECTED] === Under your tomcat directory there should be a sub-directory work/DEFAULT/your-app-name Under that directory should be .java and .class files that correspond to your .jsps. These are automatically generated by the jsp parser/compiler that comes with Tomcat and shouldn't need to be modified. Each java file should be part of package jsp. Tomcat's class loader should find this directory and the .class files therein by use of your-app-name (ie. the same name of your .war file or directory under webapps). You can always clean out the contents of the work/DEFAULT/your-app-name directory and have them re-generated if they aren't working properly. In your case, it might be that something about the way you have filesystems mounted is making it so that tomcat's class loader can't find the work/ directory or one of its subdirectories. Problem: Using Tomcat 3.2.1 on NT 4.0 SP5, get Internal Servlet Error on writing POST response approx. 800kb in length
Using Tomcat 3.2.1 on NT 4.0 SP 5, I have a servlet which sends XML-encoded strings in response to POST requests. String result = null; // do processing which sets result string int len = result.length();response.setContentLength(len); ... out.println(result); I verified that the response buffer size was increased to 64kb and the content length was set correctly. Still, I get the error on writing the response. Is this a known problem with a fix? Am I doing something wrong? Please advise. Thanks. Barry Draper [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sinking X11 from AWT - Re: AW: servlet error..
This is a well known bug in AWT / Swing. An alternative to changing the Java library is to use something to sink that errant X11 connection - we use Xvnc for this purpose. I have had the same problem but I think I finally reached a solution. The important thing is to set DISPLAY and XAUTHORITY in your startup script. DISPLAY=:0 XAUTHORITY=/root/.Xauthority export DISPLAY XAUTHORITY You have to check that XAUTHORITY points at the file written by the Xserver at startup. We had some problems with Xvnc sometimes putting the file in the / directory. I think we solved that by specifying -auth /root/.Xauthority while running vnc. We have however experienced other problems with our setup (tomcat just hangs or exits). We have not tracked down the problem yet, however, if you experience similar things it may be something with the images. I have been thinking of doing something like http://www.eteks.com/pja/en/ (PJA Toolkit). Since it is GPL I can't use their code (or can I?) and keep my. Anyone know about a similar project with another license? /david

For all my servlets, I have the following type of entry: servlet servlet-namebriefXSL/servlet-name servlet-classcom.smartbrief.BriefXSL.Servlet/servlet-class /servlet The default Invoker automatically sets up /servlet/ as a mapping for all your defined servlets. So, the above should be enough to get /servlet/briefXSL to pull up correctly -- without the servlet-mapping you have below. Maybe the explicit servlet-mapping you are doing is somehow messing with the default Invoker on Linux, but that's only speculation... How to debug a missing servlet error?
Hi, I have a development environment that works correctly (Win 98), but when I move the code over to my QA environment (Linux) tomcat can no longer find the servlet. I have a web.xml file in the Web-Inf directory that has the following: web-app servlet servlet-name briefXSL /servlet-name servlet-class com.smartbrief.BriefXSLServlet /servlet-class /servlet servlet-mapping servlet-namebriefXSL/servlet-name url-pattern/servlet/briefXSL/url-pattern /servlet-mapping /web-app Tomcat receives the request from apache, but doesn't know what to do with it and spits back a 404. It's almost as if tomcat isn't reading the web.xml file at all. Thanks, Chris
RE: How to debug a missing servlet error?
This is a guess, but have you disabled the servlet invoker in the server.xml file? I believe that the servlet invoker will grab the request for /servlet/* before the webapp will check its mappings. I would suggest removing the servlet invoker from your server.xml file and see if this works. If so, then you'll need to decide if you need it and need to change your servlet's mapping or if you can get along just fine without it. (Remember that this is a server-wide setting). RE: How to debug a missing servlet error?
Nope. I removed it entirely and still got the 404. Also, that invoker is still in my server.xml file on my localhost and it works fine. I can copy the code base to other Win boxes and it works right off, too. So its not something particularly unique to my config on my localhost. Re: How to debug a missing servlet error?
Hi Chris, Tomcat should recognize /servlet/briefXSL without the explicit servlet-mapping you are using -- but I don't know if that is what's causing your problem. Its usually not a good idea to get political on lists like this, but I just wonder about your email address, it icould/i be considered quite offensive to some people. I'm sure it isn't meant to be. Regarding your error, have you compiled and successfully run the simple hello world servlet, thats a good starting point. If that works your system is installed ok and the problem is with your own code. If so you may want to post the relevant parts. cheers -Original Message- From: white_power [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, April 05, 2001 2:02 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Error 500: Internal servlet error Hello everybody ! RE: Servlet error I can't seem to resolve
I got same problem. Someone can help me? Hi, I try to run Servlet from TOMCAT, but it has error. Please give me some help! The Servlet is to access Oracle DB. V8i. from the Travel DB that I download from Oracle site. I use Jdeveloper 3.1.1.2 to create this project. It compiles and runs fine in Jdeveloper. When I try to deploy it to TOMCAT, it has the following error message: Error: 500 Location: /examples/servlet/test/test Internal Servlet Error: java.lang.NullPointerException at java.lang.ClassLoader.resolveClass0(Native Method) at java.lang.ClassLoader.resolveClass(ClassLoader.java:588) at org.apache.tomcat.loader.AdaptiveClassLoader.loadClass(AdaptiveClassLoader.java:430) at org.apache.tomcat.loader.AdaptiveServletLoader.loadClass(AdaptiveServletLoader.java:174) at org.apache.tomcat.core.ServletWrapper.loadServlet(ServletWrapper.java:265) at org.apache.tomcat.core.ServletWrapper.init(ServletWrapper.java:289) at org.apache.tomcat.core.Handler.service(Handler.java:254) at org.apache.tomcat.core.ServletWrapper.service(ServletWrapper.java:372) at org.apache.tomcat.core.ContextManager.internalService(ContextManager.java:797) at org.apache.tomcat.core.ContextManager.service(ContextManager.java:743) at org.apache.tomcat.service.http.HttpConnectionHandler.processConnection(HttpConnectionHandler.java:210) at org.apache.tomcat.service.TcpWorkerThread.runIt(PoolTcpEndpoint.java:416) at org.apache.tomcat.util.ThreadPool$ControlRunnable.run(ThreadPool.java:498) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:484) It looks to me like Tomcat cannot fine the lib files. Also, the test.jar deployment file has sub directory. If I unzip them to F:\tomcat\jakarta-tomcat-3.2\webapps\examples\WEB-INF\classes, it will create several sub directories and jar files. How can I run the test.class file, if the file is in a sub directory say myproject? Can Tomcat get the lib and attachment file from all the sub directory? Thanks very much. kenny __ Do You Yahoo!? RE: Servlet error I can't seem to resolve
is your web.xml set up correctly for the class? for example: servlet servlet-name servletname /servlet-name servlet-class com.pkg.here.ServletName /servlet-class /servlet servlet-mapping servlet-name servletname /servlet-name url-pattern /servletname/ /url-pattern /servlet-mapping Show the configuration you are using for the servlet in your web.xml if you do already have this set up. I don't believe this is a problem with TOMCAT finding the lib dir but more like TOMCAT not being told where the Servlet is located. --- Michael Wentzel Software Developer A HREF="http://www.aswethink.com"Software As We Think/A A HREF="mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"Michael Wentzel/A - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Servlet error I can't seem to resolve
I have a simple form handling servlet (FormEngineLight) that connects to a email class (IridiumSendMail) that have been working with another host under JServ 1.0b3. I moved to a new host with Tomcat 3.2 and also now have Tomcat 3.2 working on a local machine for testing. Now my servlet/class combo fails to work in either location. They require mail.jar and activation.jar, which are in the classpath (initially just in the context lib directory, now in the locations that load at boot). My apps are compiled agains Java 1.18 but are running on 1.2 for both local and hosted. The stackTrace I get from FormEngineLight (emailed back using the sun.net.smtp classes) is: java.lang.NullPointerException at java.util.Hashtable.put(Hashtable.java:381) at IridiumSendMail.sendIt(IridiumSendMail.java) at FormEngineLight.writeToIridiumSendMail(FormEngineLight.java) at FormEngineLight.sendConfirmation(FormEngineLight.java) at FormEngineLight.service(FormEngineLight.java) at javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:853) at org.apache.tomcat.core.ServletWrapper.handleRequest(ServletWrapper.java:499) at org.apache.tomcat.core.ContextManager.service(ContextManager.java:559) at org.apache.tomcat.service.http.HttpConnectionHandler.processConnection(HttpConnectionHandler.java:160) at org.apache.tomcat.service.TcpConnectionThread.run(SimpleTcpEndpoint.java:338) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:479) Both of my files are in jars and reside in the lib directory. RE: Servlet error I can't seem to resolve
If would seem that you are trying to put a null as either the key or value into a Hashtable. This is happening in the IridiumSendMail's sendIt method. Maybe a variable you expect to be in a session or application object are not set? Or some parameter file is not being loaded? RE: Servlet error I can't seem to resolve
The stack-trace seems pretty clear to me - the "sendIt" method of the IridiumSendMail class is storing a null pointer into a hashtable. What you may find is that the IridiumSendMail class is expecting to load a resource file from somewhere, but not finding it because you forgot to install it, or didn't install it in the right place. Just a note on the location of the "mail.jar" and "activation.jar" files - I think that the correct place for these is where you first had them, in the WEB-INF/lib directory within your web application. Placing jars in the classpath is generally a bad idea with tomcat (though quite a lot of tomcat users don't seem to understand this; presumably they are the same ones that would be using global variables under c++ :-) regards, Simon -Original Message- From: Brad Siegfreid [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, December 27, 2000 5:21 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Servlet error I can't seem to resolve I have a simple form handling servlet (FormEngineLight) that connects to a email class (IridiumSendMail) that have been working with another host under JServ 1.0b3. That was what I was thinking at first. I've gone back in and double checked how I did it before. These are all placed in WEB-INF/lib: FormEngineLight.jar IridiumSendMail.jar activation.jar (just redownloaded the latest, recompiled my files) mail.jar (just redownloaded the latest, recompiled my files) the web.xml file contains the references to the FormEngineLight servlet. I saw that. I figured that JavaMail wasn't loading or something. But I've tried it with the mail.jar file in both the WEB-INF/lib directory and in the classpath. I don't deal with any hashtable directly. The params that are loading are going into FormEngineLight. SWEET! Gotta love user groups like this. Fixed up my local machine. Have to wait for the host to recycle (once every hour 'til Enhydra is installed). Now if I can just figure out how to write to a file on the server. I'm sure that is some sort of permissions issue like last time Thanks Kitching! RE: Servlet error I can't seem to resolve
Your props is a hashtable (its a java.util.Properties which extends the java.util.Hashtable). If I had to guess, your getInitParameter method is not returning values. This would cause your problem because the class variables would then be null and then you try to put them into the Properties object, causing the NullPointer. I don't know why this method is not returning values - your web.xml file looks correct to me, but I don't use this so I could be wrong. A thought, probably off base, you are calling the servlet as /servlet/FormEngineLight from contact.html, but you set the URL-Mapping and Servlet name as /FormEngineLight - maybe its not finding the initialized servlet? Otherwise, the required libs need to be installed separately. And remember that this may happen well after the original developers have left! Secondly, it removes inter-webapp version dependencies. Suppose that one webapp requires an updated version of a shared lib. If you upgrade the shared lib, then you need to retest every single webapp, even if only one of them *actually* needed the upgrade. And with libs in the classpath, it can be difficult to even know which webapps use a lib and which don't. Thirdly, putting stuff in the classpath interferes with auto-reloading of changed classes. Each webapp gets its own classloader, which makes it possible to do things like dynamically reloading classes that have changed, and stopping a single webapp context without shutting down the whole of tomcat. If some of the webapp's code is loaded from the CLASSPATH (ie is loaded by the system classloader, not the webapp-specific classloader) then there can be problems. Fourthly, when a class is loaded via the system classpath, there is only one copy of the class methods, and one copy of class (ie static) variables for that class. If methods on the class are synchronized, then there will be contention for the class lock between webapps. One webapp could possibly hang another by acquiring not releasing such a lock. When a class is loaded by the webapp-specific classloader, this contention cannot occur - webapps are better isolated from each other. And of course, if a webapp sets the value of a static member of the class (eg setMaxFoo(3)) then that attribute is visible to all webapps in the tomcat instance, again not providing web application isolation. (note, while this could be regarded as a "feature" for allowing data communication between webapps, I thing this is a bad idea, as it assumes the webapps are running in the same virtual machine. Communicating via a shared database, or a shared EJB, or even raw sockets, seems to me to be a better way for webapps to intercommunicate). Fifthly, if you get seriously into security, for example by defining java security policies, then there may be implications. I'm not entirely sure about the effects here, but it seems that having per-webapp copies of libs, and *not* having extra stuff in the classpath (eg libs used by other webapps) can only be good. Sixthly, I think there are problems with loading resource files. If you (or shared code) calls getResourceBundle() or related methods, I suspect the places the JVM looks for the resource file is different... Against that, the "libs in CLASSPATH" approach seems to offer two benefits: save disk space and save RAM. I think trying to save a megabyte of disk space (and that's a big jar!) is really pointless in this age. Saving RAM by only loading one copy of a class might have some benefit - but I'm not sure that this doesn't happen anyway. The fact that a class needs to *behave* as if it were per-classloader doesn't mean that two copies of the bytecode are loaded (or does it? I don't know what run-time-linking does to the original bytecode...) I guess if you have a really large jar, and dozens of webapps use it, there is a valid case for the classpath approach, but in general I think having self-contained webapps makes life easier for everyone concerned.. Just my two cents :-) Simon [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 12/27/2000 10:32:34 AM Please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: Subject: RE: Servlet error I can't seem to resolve The stack-trace seems pretty clear to me - the "sendIt" method of the IridiumSendMail class is storing a null pointer into a hashtable. Simon, Wow, more like a few dollars worth! Thank you for your insights. Would you be willing to share the dir structure and the web.xml file for one of your self-contained webapps? This would be incredibly helpful! Thanks again. You may not have one of the workers configured properly or the connector ports messed up. Check your workers.properties file and the server.xml to ensure both are the same. As I believe someone mentioned before, you are getting a Null pointer exception. You need to find out why you are getting a null pointer here : at com.se.error.ErrConstants.SETRACE(ErrConstants.java:101) at com.sefgcr.helper.jsp.gen.TfgWelcome.processRequest(TfgWelcome.java:43) This could be Linux related, but it does not seem to be Tomcat related. Also, it probably isn't helping you to unsubscribe in the same message you send out for help. -Original Message- From: rram [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Saturday, November 11, 2000 03:51 AM To: Tsoloane Moahloli Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: internal servlet error(pl. help assoon as possible Hello friends, I have installed my ecom application in Window's NT,IIS,JRUN2.3+ my ecom application it is working fine. Re: Internal servlet Error
The stack traceback tells you that a NullPointerException was thrown at line 101 in the ErrConstants class, in method SETRACE. You should investigate that part of your code to determine why a null pointer exception is being thrown. Servlet to Servlet Error
Hi All, I'm having trouble with one servlet communicating with another servlet. I create the URL, open the connection, get an output stream, write to the output stream, flush it, and close it. The servlet I'm writing to gets an input stream and reads the data, but it never sees the end of the data and hangs. The only clue I got was a "parse error" displayed in the Tomcat window. I searched in the Tomcat source and found that it is the AdapterHandler that is generating this message when trying to parse an HTTP Header. So, I added a dummy Cookie to the HTTP Header and everything worked. This seems like a bug to me. Is this problem already know. I'm using 3.2 beta 6. have you considered using a javax.servlet.RequestDispatcher to communicate between your servlets? regards matthias -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: Wyn Easton [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Gesendet am: Mittwoch, 25.
