Tomcat as a service

2001-06-06 Thread David DELGRANCHE

Hi all,

I'm discovering Tomcat on NT. It seems to work fine but I have a problem:
Is there a way to force Tomcat to start as a service and without openning a
new window?
Perhaps this is a stupid question, but I thank you for help!

Tomcat as a service

2001-06-08 Thread Winer, Matthew

Yesterday afternoon I had Tomcat running as a service in Win2k. I must have
changed something this morning because now it doesn't work as a service.
When I start it manually it work. But as a service I get an Error 500 on
the web page. I can't find what I changed that made this stop working.
Does anybody know where I could start.

Thanks for you time

Tomcat as a service.

I have Tomcat running as a service successfully however I have one issue.

If I run tomcat manually (start it by hand) then this works. I added:

/uwi/servlet/*=ajp12
/uwi/*.jsp=ajp12
/uwi/*=ajp12

to my uriworkermap.properties. I don't know why it works this way, I mean I
thought the only difference was the wrapper.properties file which has
nothing to do with the workers and contexts.

Thank you

Tomcat as a service...

2002-02-19 Thread kevin . schmidt

One other thing... I have tried now, every now and then over
the past 6 months to get Tomcat to run as an NT service.
I have NEVER been sucessful and I have tried 4 or 5 different
ways. I kept thinking that there was some silly bug that was going
to be fixed in the next release. Well, I just installed the Tomcat 4.0.2
exe file, and during the install, checked the option to install as NT
service.(I am running W2K), I have JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME
set properly, and reboot, and ONCE AGAIN, no tomcat service.
The service is listed in the Admin Services console as being
automatically started, but it wont actually start. When I try to start it
manually from the services panel, I get this message, "Could not
start Tomcat on local computer. The service did not return an error.
Could be windows internal error or internal error." If there was no error
returned, then why WONT IT START And if there was an error,
why not REPORT IT. How about telling the user what is wrong so that
he/she can fix it. Duh. Sorry to be so brash, but it has been this way
for a long time and noone seems to care about fixing it.

Tomcat as a service

2003-09-23 Thread Robert Mark Bram
Howdy all!

1) I am running Tomcat 4.1 as a service on XP. At what point in the install
process did I choose this option?

2) Is there *any* difference between running Tomcat as a service and a
non-service? What do you call it when you are running it as a non-service?
Do you just call it a process or program?

3) If I don't have Tomcat as a service, how can I get it running as a
service?

4) Where is all of this documented? I did a google search limited to
jakarta.apache.org and then I did a text search on my document Tomcat
4.1\webapps\tomcat-docs directory for "Tomcat as a service" and found
nothing that answered these questions.

Thanks for any advice!

Try a different solution:
http://www.alexandriasc.com/software/JavaService/index.html

I've used it with Tomcat 3 and 4, plus many other applications. It has a
lot of useful configuration options, and I've never seen it crash or
whatever. You may wish to modify the supplied "install tomcat 4" script, as
it needs to add "-current %2" for the install line.

RE: Tomcat as a service

2001-11-14 Thread Randy Layman

If you are using jk_nt_service to run the service, modify your
wrapper.properties file (the last line) so that the JVM receives the -Xrs
parameter - this is the parameter that Sun supplied to the JVM that makes
the bug go away.

RE: Tomcat as a service

2001-11-14 Thread Bongiorno, Christian

Here is how you do it -- It is detailed in the MS help docs

goto the win2k resource disk (or an old NT disk will do)
and find the 2 files srvany.exe and instsrv.exe

create a no command batch to start tomcat. I.E if you use TC 3.2 make
"tomcat start" into a batch "tomcatstart"
(it doesn't like arguments)
now, at the commandline type

instsrv TOMCAT

now you have to make some registry hacks.

goto \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentControlSet\services
and find your TOMCAT key

in there add sub keys to the TOMCAT service

add
Parameters

in there add 2 string values and set their values to

AppDirectory
Application

See http://home.stny.rr.com/cbongior/pics/tomcat.jpg (qulaity may not be so
good)

Now you can run tomcat like any other service. You still need to stop it the
old fashioned way though

Chris

Subject: Tomcat as a service

I am a relativley new Tomcat user, and have been
charged with the task of setting up Tomcat 3.2 to run
as a service on a Windows2000 server.

I've read lots of the documentation relating to this
and have had some success setting it up. I have
managed to create tomcat as a service which starts
automatically.
However the system we are running requires Java1.3.1
which causes an error with the program I used to set
up the service. The result being that the service
terminates when the current user logs out of the
server.

I'm struggling to find any other way of configuring
the system to work and would appreciate any
advice/experiences others have had with this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Yes it is.
What version of Tomcat do you use?
If you installed the Tomcat 4 (and 3.3.3?) rpms for RedHat the service script is
generated and installed in /etc/rc.d/init.d/
Just perform run the commands

chkconfig tomcat4 (or tomcat for 3.3.3)
service tomcat4 start (or service tomcat for 3.3.3)

For earlier versions of tomcat you must create a startup script an put it in
/etc/rc.d/init.d

Uninstalling Tomcat as a service

2002-01-09 Thread Mario Felarca

Hello,

I am using JavaService to run Tomcat 3.2.3 as a service on a Win2k machine.
Sometimes, when I do an uninstall of the service, Tomcat does not fully
uninstall.

From the service control manager, it is listed as "Disabled", and you
cannot do anything with it because Windows will come back with an error
saying "This service is marked for deletion". It requires a reboot to fix.

Has anyone seen this problem? It does not happen every time, but happens
often enough to be a hindrance.

Any information or pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Mario-

The reason that you get the message is because the only errors that
can be reported are those detected by 2000 (like missing binary, improper
permissions, etc).

I would suggest that you look at the jvm.stderr and jvm.stdout for
more information about what the error is that you are getting.

it is on the "Log On" panel if you right click your catalina service in the

What do you mean by my Network config?
I have tried it at home and at work, both with very different setups of
Windows2000, and Tomcat pulls the same BS in both cases. Tomcat starts fine
when either I double click on startup.bat, or use the "Start Tomcat"
shortcut in the Start Menu(which just points to startup.bat). Do you want
to know my varible settings?
System variables:
JAVA_HOME=C:\j2sdk1.4.0

Kevin, have you set the service to "Allow service to interact with
desktop"?
it is on the "Log On" panel if you right click your catalina service in the
services window. this may help see what the heck windows is doing.
Sorry if you've done this already...

RE: Tomcat as a service...

2002-02-19 Thread Randy Layman

They should be in the logs directory, but you might want to try
searching the system for the files. Their lack of existence would point to
the service not even getting loaded, probably a problem with your JAVA_HOME.
I don't know about Tomcat 4, but with Tomcat 3 you had to edit the
wrapper.properties file in the conf directory to set the JAVA_HOME. Maybe
someone more familiar with Tomcat 4 could indicate how to set the JAVA_HOME
for the service?

RE: Tomcat as a service...

2002-02-19 Thread kevin . schmidt

wrapper.properties? I think your talking about one of the other ways to
set up Tomcat as a service. There are like 3 or 4 different ways. I am
just trying to get the normal jakarta-tomcat-4.0.2-LE-jdk14.exe install to
work as it should be. I should be able to install this file, check the
option to have it installed as a serivce, and it should WORK. If there is
a problem with one of my settings, it should report that DURING THE
INSTALL. Also, if windows wont report an error properly, then how about
having another small program in the bin directory which simulates th OS
attempting to run the service and reports the error to the user? Or
something. You shouldnt just leave people in the dark.
Help! Im trapped in the dark! :v)

When I look at the properties for the service, it says that the path to the
executable is:
C:\Program Files\Apache Tomcat 4.0\bin\tomcat.exe
When I try to run this exe from the command line, tomcat, of course, doesnt start.
How does the service know to perform all the stuff that startup.bat does???
Also, the service has no settings for environmental variables, so I assume it goes
directly off whats in the system variables, correct? Question: Is a reboot needed if
one of the env variables changes?
Also, it has a line for "Start parameters" which is empty. Should something be here
maybe???
Dependencies tab, how do I set it up so that Tomcat starts up before Apache does.
Because, I have noticed, runnning on the command line, that Apache needs a restart
once you load up Tomcat. Will the order of the services booting affect it? If so, it
seems
to me that the installer should detect if Apache is present or not and set it up for
the user.
 Questions, questions...

RE: Tomcat as a service...

2002-02-19 Thread Randy Layman

I just downloaded and installed Tomcat 4.02 binary and everything
works fine for me. The installer detected the JVM (1.3) on installation.
The only difference is that I installed to a directory without spaces in it.

It would seem that the service configuration is stored in the
registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Services\Apache Tomcat\Parameters.
You might want to check these and make sure that the installer filled in the
parameters correctly (epically quoting the parameters correctly).

I finally got it to work! Thanks Randy!
I installed it in a directory with no spaces, and then, when I went to the
services console, it wouldnt start, but it gave me an error saying that it
didnt have privledge to run. So, I changed it to login using my account,
instead of the LocalSystem account, and then it worked!!!
 Thanks guys!
 -Kevin

BTW... Someone should fix it so that it works under ANY installed path!!!

I just downloaded and installed Tomcat 4.02 binary and everything
works fine for me. The installer detected the JVM (1.3) on installation.
The only difference is that I installed to a directory without spaces in
it.

It would seem that the service configuration is stored in the
registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Services\Apache Tomcat\Parameters.
You might want to check these and make sure that the installer filled in
the
parameters correctly (epically quoting the parameters correctly).

I don't know what tool the Jakarta guys use to build the installer,
but I know that for a project I worked on last year we had the same
restriction because the install builder (InstallAnywhere) wouldn't allow us
to escape the strings properly.

with Tomcat4, I don't think there's a jvm.stderr and jvm.stdout, all the
logs should be in your log directory, the default is CATALING_HOME/logs,
stdout.log and stderr.log. Look at the other ones, they might give you an
idea also.

The reason that you get the message is because the only errors that
can be reported are those detected by 2000 (like missing binary, improper
permissions, etc).

I would suggest that you look at the jvm.stderr and jvm.stdout for
more information about what the error is that you are getting.

I remember someone post it back then he tried installing without spaces and
used the long names, I always install my apache and tomcat into C:\ or D:\
and not in program files, it's easier to get to them this way, or put them
in c:\usr\local\ to mimic Unix directory structure.

JAVA_HOME=C:\j2sdk1.4.0
CATALINA_HOME=C:\Progra~1\Apache~2

Be more specific what settings you want to know...

Another thing to watch out for is although the doc and the installer says it
detected JSDK at somewhere, make sure that is the case because I came to
realize that all it does is check the environment variable and not the
registry setting in JavaSoft.

Running Tomcat as a service

2003-07-07 Thread nrapagnani
I am running Apache 4.1 along with IIS on a windows 2000 machine.

I chose "Run as an NT service" during the Tomcat install.

I've configured the 2 web servers to work together.

The jsp pages come up fine when I choose the "Start Tomcat" icon in the
start folder. Problem is, when Tomcat is running as a service I get 1 of 2
pages.
The first page is "The servlet container is temporary unavailable or being
upgraded" written on a blank page. Other times I get a 500 error pointing
to a line in my jsp page that does not exist. I disabled the service an
then re-enabled it and things worked fine for a while. Then it went back to
the same problem. I do not know much about NT services. Any help would be
appreciated.

Installing Tomcat as a Service

2003-08-20 Thread Stuart Stephen
Hi all,

How might I go about installing Tomcat as a service in RedHat 9.0. I've
never installed a service under linux manually before and I'm not sure what
to do. I can't find the appropriate documentation in the manuals for either
Tomcat or RedHat. I must be looking in the wrong places :O(

UNRELATED: Also, If I wanted to install a java program as a service, how
might I do this? Is this a similar process?

I call it running from the console or command line. It's still a
process or program, whether run as "service" (i.e. background) or not.

OK .. I checked this already.

Tomcat FAQ | Windows | "Setting up TomCat 4.1.12 to run as an NT Service"
http://www.mattkelli.com/tech/tomcat/ntservice.htm

Unless you are referring to the Tomcat Service Manager, but I was hoping to
find something from Jakarta to do this..

Please forgive me but I fail to find anything else there that talks about
Tomcat as a service.. :(

Re: Tomcat as a service

2003-09-28 Thread Henrik Vendelbo
The information is fairly limited on how to get things to work with Tomcat
running as a service.

What I have learnt so far is :
1) CATALINA_OPTS environment variable allows you to pass options to the JVM
2) The Jakarta Commons project hosts the Daemon that does the work of
running Tomcat as a service http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/daemon

I have yet to look into,
1) Automating start/stop with Ant in conjunciton with recompiling webapps
(Alternately reloading the webapps, although Tomcat doesnt seem to survive
webapp exceptions very well)
2) Making the Daemon show up in Apache Monitor (part of httpd)
3) Configuring Tomcat with service parameters (or ini file) instead of
CATALINA_OPTS

Err.. why are you using Tomcat 3.3.1a?

You can install Tomcat 4 as a service by using the version packaged as a
windows installer or you could use the Tomcat service manager which you can
find here:

I tried to start Tomcat3.3.1a as a service on a Windows2000 Professional .
I followed the instructions in the page
'http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-3.3-doc/NT-Service-howto.html'.
I had no problem until point 3.
Executing the command specified at point 4 (jk_nt_service -S ), I receive the following message:

Asked (and given) winsock 1.1
Starting Jakarta.
Jakarta failed to start.

And in the log files 'jvm.stderr', I find the following message:

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: $(wrapper/jvm/options)
Exception in thread "main"

Can you tell me how to proceed for installing my Tomcat as a service?
Thank you.

Check to make sure that your wrappers.properties file is includeing the
right jar files. I had this problem when I got a wrappers.properties file
that waas designed for 3.2 where a couple things have changed (no xml.jar
and a jasper.jar instead, and there might be one other, but I can't
remember)

Try this and see what happens.

When I install Tomcat as a service, it will not start and there is no
feedback as to why. It starts and stops fine from the command line. I have
attached my wrapper.properties and a batch file I created to run the install
command line. I have everything installed on E: and I am using JDK 1.3.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Make shure your wrapper.properties file contains a class_path to jaxp.jar
and parser.jar.

The appropriate section should look like this:

wrapper.class_path=$(wrapper.tomcat_home)\classes
wrapper.class_path=$(wrapper.tomcat_home)\lib\ant.jar
wrapper.class_path=$(wrapper.tomcat_home)\lib\jaxp.jar
wrapper.class_path=$(wrapper.tomcat_home)\lib\parser.jar

Register Tomcat as a service?

2005-02-17 Thread Hay, Markus
Hello.

I have an application that requires Tomcat (4.1.30 or later) and I'd
like to know how I can register Tomcat as a service if the user does not
do this during the install. In my installer, I can check the registry to
see if Tomcat is registered as a service and if it isn't, I'd like to be
able to run a command to register it... as the Tomcat installer would.
Is this possible or do I need to create all the registry entries
manually?

Thanks...

RE: SV: tomcat as a service

2002-11-13 Thread Turner, John

"Out of environment space" means you are setting too many environment
variables, or the values of the environment variables you are setting are
too large. Windows has limited space for environment variables.

That said, you only need to set two environment variables, regardless of
platform: JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME. Tomcat will figure out the rest
from there.

On Windows, the best place to set these is not in autoexec.bat, but via the
Control Panel.

For example, on Windows 2000 Pro:

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Advanced -> Environment Variables

You want to set them at the System or "All Users" level, not just for an
individual user account.

RE: SV: tomcat as a service

2002-11-13 Thread Turner, John

You're still going to need to resolve your environment space issues, even if
you have to set the variables in autoexec.bat.

Your environment space is too big. Either delete the extra Tomcat settings
you have (you only need JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME), or try and condense
things like your PATH.

Re: SV: tomcat as a service

2002-11-13 Thread Chris Parker
Or fogotten option #3 - increase your environment size.

In your config.sys file (C:\config.sys) modify or add this:
shell=command.com /e:(a number)

For example, to make your environment size 1kb, use this
shell=command.com /e:1024

The original DOS had a default environment size of 256 bytes. Additionally,
the value typed needed to be between 160 and 32768. This may or may not
still apply to Win9x...

Whatever you type is rounded up to the next even 16 bytes, so don't be
surprised if the value is a bit higher than what you type.

Sounds like it can't find a class definition. Check the classpath you assigned when

I've found that the service for Tomcat (I'm not sure which one you are using
or even if there are more than one) doesn't shut down properly. Be careful
if you need (like I did) ContextListeners to do things when it shuts down.
They don't get called (or at least not by the service I have).

Other than that, it worked fine for me.

Add -Xrs to the call to start Tomcat at the bottom of the

Problem with Tomcat as a Service

2001-06-19 Thread Frank Lawlor

I am using JavaService to start Tomcat as a service.
It installs and starts just fine, but when I try to
access a jsp, it hangs. In jasper.log it shows the
usual lines about the jsp being accessed, but hangs
after the line:

Classpath according to the Servlet Engine is ...

Noting shows up in the work directory and no error
messages in any log.

I tried putting tools.jar in the Tomcat lib, adding it
to the service classpath, but it doesn't help.

Any ideas why jasper is hanging and how to fix/identify
the problem?

Mario-

I don't know if this will help, but I have the same setup and it's working
just fine.

I did go into the World Wide Web Publishing Services in Win2000 and add the
Apache Tomcat 4.1 service as a dependency. What this does is to ensure that
Tomcat starts before IIS does.

If you need details, let me know, but it appears to work for me.

I already have done the hard work of intergrating apache and tomcat together
in the desired way. I now need to install the services. Going to the RPM is

are installed under the linux os now.

I'll still have to research it to get the Java applications started as

RE: Installing Tomcat as a Service

2003-08-20 Thread James Harman
Stuart,

You basically need to write a wrapper .sh script to
tart tomcat and put it into the init.d directory. The
init.d directory varies with the linux distro but
common places a /etc/init.d and /etc/rc.d/init.d.
Then you need to create sym links to start/stop it on
the various run levels. I refer you to your
documention on services under RedHat.

I believe that somebody mentioned that there is a
catalin.sh script that works as a service, so you may
not need to write one.

In most of the RedHat distros that I have used, there
is a script in the init.d directory named httpd that
takes care of stopping and starting apache as a
service.

I would look at the other scripts in init.d for
information on how to write one.

Sounds like your problem can be easily solved by reading the manpage, as the previous
email from Paul suggests.
man chkconfig
will tell you exactly why "service service-name does not support chkconfig"
you need specially formatted comments starting with something like "# chkconfig : 2345
80 20"

RE: Installing Tomcat as a Service

2003-08-20 Thread Steph Richardson

Sounds like your problem can be easily solved by reading the manpage, as the previous
email from Paul suggests.
man chkconfig
will tell you exactly why "service service-name does not support chkconfig"

The whole point of chkconfig is to manage the installing of the service for you ( e.g.
symlinks to init.d/yourscript from different
run levels)
You need specially formatted comments in your scripts, starting with something like "#
chkconfig : 2345 80 20" - the manpage has an
example.

It's not about permissions, it's about the format of the script. From the
chkconfig man page:
-
RUNLEVEL FILES
Each service which should be manageable by chkconfig needs two or more
commented lines added to its init.d
script. The first line tells chkconfig what runlevels the service
should be started in by default, as well
as the start and stop priority levels. If the service should not, by
default, be started in any runlevels,
a - should be used in place of the runlevels list. The second line
contains a description for the service,
and may be extended across multiple lines with backslash continuation.

For example, random.init has these three lines:
   # chkconfig: 2345 20 80
   # description: Saves and restores system entropy pool for \
   # higher quality random number generation.
This says that the random script should be started in levels 2, 3, 4,
and 5, that its start priority should
be 20, and that its stop priority should be 80. You should be able to
figure out what the description
says; the \ causes the line to be continued. The extra space in front
of the line is ignored.
-

Make sure your script has this line and ALL three numbers are present (read
above to figure out what they are):
# chkconfig: 2345 20 80

RE: Installing Tomcat as a Service

2003-08-20 Thread Mike Cherichetti \(Renegade Internet\)
I use the following script on RedHat 7.3 (I save this as
/etc/rc.d/init.d/tomcat):

#!/bin/bash
#
# Startup script for the Tomcat Web Server
#
# chkconfig: 345 84 16
# description: Tomcat is a World Wide Web server. It is used to serve \
# HTML, JSP, and servlets, and CGI if needed.
# processname: java

case "$1" in
  start)
$CATALINA_HOME/bin/startup.sh
;;
  stop)
$CATALINA_HOME/bin/shutdown.sh
;;
  *)
echo $"Usage: tomcat {start|stop}"
exit 1
esac

exit 0

I then do the following with chkconfig:

chkconfig --add tomcat
chkconfig --level 345 tomcat on
chkconfig --list tomcat

If that still doesn't work, ensure that you've set CATALINA_HOME and
JAVA_HOME in /etc/profile.

Hope that helps,
Mike

Thanks for the reply, I've tried creating a script in the /etc/init.d
directory and then running the chkconfig --add script-name and this hasn't
worked for me.

I'm getting an error saying that:
service service-name does not support chkconfig

I must still be doing something wrong?

The script has the same permissions showing in the ls -l list?

man chkconfig
man serviceconf
man init

For a Java program, write a wrapper shell script like Tomcat authors did
with
catalina.sh.

Re: Installing Tomcat as a Service

Here you go:

Oscar's page should be all you need:

http://daydream.stanford.edu/tomcat/install_web_services.html

Check the bottom of the page for his tomcatd script. Then use

/sbin/chkconfig --add tomcatd

to install it.

Tomcat as a service on NT

Hi Tomcat team,

I'm trying to use Tomcat as a service on NT, but I
can see an error in stderr.log file, this error is:

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
javax/xml/parsers/SAXParserFactory

Where can I find this class?

My CLASSPATH contains:    jaxp.jar,
jasper.jar, webserver.jar and parser.jar, the jar files that contains Tomcat
version 3.2 beta 6.

Could you tell me what jar file/s I
need??

Tomcat as a Service on NT

2000-11-02 Thread Miller, Anthony

Hi,

I have installed Tomcat as a service on NT but now it can't see the classes111.
zip file for the oracle driver.

I've tried adding set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH% to the tomcat.bat file (instead of
set CLASSPATH=. etc) but it can't see the classes111.zip file.

However when I run the service in debug (tomcatsvc -debug) on the command line
its fine!!.

Can anybody give me some pointers to how I might solve this jolly annoying
problem

Have a look at service.bat in the bin directory within the .zip
distribution as I don't think you get that with the .exe. However you
can't rely on that file being there for the same reason so you would
have to replicate what it does in your installer.

Although aren't people going to be pissed if you start installing
services alongside your application?

*slaps forehead*

Forgot about that... for 4.X I rolled my own batch file, which is
attached as a .txt (well hopefully iunless it gets stripped), the file
is a bit hacky but does the job, alternatively the one distributed
with 5.5 may actually work okay.

Hey everyone:

I solved the problem I was facing. real sorry to be so much trouble. The
problem was with the wrapper.properties file as expected.

There is an instance of parser.jar and jaxp.jar in the file which i happened
to remove from the lib directory and replace them with xalan.jar and
xerces.jar. I replaced the same in the file and bingo! it starts working

Thanks again

I am trying to get tomcat to run as a service on a win2k box but am having
problems.

I follow the manual for installing the service and create a service
successfully.

jk_nt_service -i Jakarta c:\jakarta-tomcat\conf\wrapper.properties
I get the response:

Asked (and given) winsock 1.1
The service named Jakarta was created. Now adding registry entries
Registry values were added
If you have already updated wrapper.properties you may start the Jakarta
service by exec
uting "net start Jakarta" from the command prompt

but when I do a net start Jakarta I get the following:

The Jakarta service is starting.
The Jakarta service could not be started.

The service did not report an error.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3534.

C:\jakarta-tomcat\conf>net helpmsg 3534

The service did not report an error.

EXPLANATION

The service did not report an error.

ACTION

Try the task later. If the problem persists, contact your network
administrator.

Why is this happening? I tried starting the service from the services applet
too but it gives the same error.

I know a lot of you must have answered this kinda question beforecan you
please do it again?

Thanks a bunch

Launching subprocess under Tomcat as a Service

2001-10-25 Thread Robert Casto

To all,

I have a servlet that spawns a process to generate PDF reports. When I run
Tomcat 3.2.3 using the startup.bat method, everything works fine. The
subprocess runs, completes its task, and my Servlet returns and completes
its processing. The problem comes when running Tomcat as a service using
jk_nt_service.exe. My Servlet will run, all of my webpages will work, but
when my Servlet spawns the subprocess to generate the PDF file, it hangs. I
have tried changing the settings of the service to log in as various users
with no luck. Any suggestions on how to ensure that the subprocess will
execute while running Tomcat as a service. NOTE: This problem occurs whether
I am using NT4 SP6 or Win2k.

Tomcat as a Service in Win 2k

2001-06-25 Thread Tomeu Bennàssar

Hi:

I have installed Tomcat 3.2.2 on a Win 2k server and I have tried to
configure it as a service but an error comes out when I start the
service. The error is:

The Jakarta service is starting.
The Jakarta service could not be started.
The service did not report an error.
More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3534.

But when I execute NET HELPMSG 3534 no information is given about the
error.

Has anyone resolved this error? If you have, please tell me how did you
do it?

Best regards
Tomeu Bennàssar

running Tomcat as a service on windows2000

2001-02-14 Thread Parag Shah

I've got Apache and
Tomcat configured successfully on w2k. But when I register and run Tomcat as a
service it fails. Registration works but "net start Tomcat" fails and I can't
find any error logs. Only information is in the event viewer: "Jakarta - Tomcat
error 1063: StartServiceCtrlDispatcher failed".

Any hints or clues
as to what's going on?

Thanks.

Multiple Instances of Tomcat as a Service

2003-01-03 Thread Jason Chambers
I am running multiple JVMs of Tomcat using the CATALINA_BASE environment
variables. Currently, the only way I know of to start these is with the
start batch files.

Does anyone know of a way to start multiple instancs of tomcat as services?

What do you mean by "print," that the browser's File->Print function no
longer works? What's in the Tomcat logs?

RE: Tomcat As A Service Printing Problem

2004-08-19 Thread Shakeel
Here is the actual situation.

Java Printing API(javax.printing), is being used for printing , works fine
when Tomcat was running without a service, but as we run tomcat as
a windows service then the printing failed, logs show that network printer
can not be found.

This is the log trace.

ERROR 2004-08-19 14:05:57,765 - Checks.printCheck:4295 -
Error while Printing check javax.print.PrintException: Printer Not Found:
\\sibisoft-saleem\TerminalPrinter

However as a non-service it does not throw any exception and printing works.

Re: Tomcat As A Service Printing Problem

2004-08-19 Thread John Villar
What's your OS? if you're running on WNT, W2K, W2003 or WXP your account
for the service probably is "LocalSystem" and that's an account that, in
general terms, doesn't have too much permission on the net. Try changing
your account to an Active Directory account.
