Re: Topband: 10/28 morning conditions

2021-10-28 Thread Thomas Hoyer via Topband
I also heard W0FLS working JA8EKM. At my location the JA was nothing but a
whisper in the noise. I could tell some other stations were in there but with
my noise level around S5 (quiet morning for me) I couldn't pull anything
out before I had to head to work. Maybe I need to get up a little earlier
Kind of exciting though because I've never heard, let alone worked, any JA's on
160m.

What an unusual morning of prop. Started, at 10:43Z with hearing Mike, KL7QOW,
with a huge signal. Then heard JA8EKM working Dave, W0FLS. Worked JA8 at 1052
with his signal still building. Then found, and worked, KH6ZM at 10:57. Big
signal from him too.

Went up the band and called CQ. Phil, VK6GX, called in. QRN made it tough but
logged him at 1107. Copying over JA. Nothing direct path. All told heard
several (4 or 5) more JA's working a couple. Kim, HL5IVL, was in well but I
couldn't get through to him. Capped off the morning working AL7JX who faded at
the end. This was at 11:56. My sunrise was 11:37.

All told, the best prop from PAC/ Asia this year. And maybe in many years.

I find this also interesting. At the start of the prop here, WELL before SR,
reception was best (and only for the JA signals) on the JA beverage. Later,
closer to the end of the opening, best, and for most signals, reception better
on 8 antenna circle array. I am guessing this has to do with low vs higher
angle arrival.

Was a really fun morning. Mornings like this almost compensate for the mornings
where the biggest signal is from the storm QRN!

Re: Topband: Antenna thoughts

2021-03-02 Thread Thomas Hoyer via Topband
I changed my home built Battle Creek Special over to a "tee" for 160 last fall
and I feel it performs much better on 160 then the "L" of the BCS did. Due to
yard restrictions the ends of my tee's slope down a bit, one more then the
other. Overall height is approx 52' with the tee wires extending out from
there. Had to add a bit of base loading to get a good match.

John,
For DX, the T will be better than the L, especially if part of the L is
sloping. (Higher radiation resistance.) Also, if the two loading wires are
the same length, the antenna will be good on 3.5 and 7 MHz. Regarding the
radials, it all depends on how many and how long you have now, but the T
will be better for DX, in any case.

Observation from my little gun station in eastern PA is that propagation seems
to have moved more to the west of me, western PA, Ohio and further. Whereas for
the last two weeks or so I was hearing EU fairly well given my S5 noise level
which is quite for me.
Worked the KP2 and YL stations last night but as Roger alludes to some deep QSB
made it a couple try QSO.
That 7Q7 was drawing a lot of activity bit I could not hear him at all. Seemed
like stations to the west of me were hearing better.

pond . . . good have such a nice turnout.

However, quite deep QSB on most signals, and propagation didn't seem as good

Figures Only need a couple more countries for DXCC and my TB antenna is
down for the next couple months due to a construction project going on in the
yard. The contractor didn't want to "work around" the guy lines on the vertical
- which really were in his way - so I took the vertical down temporarily.
Of course this construction project was supposed to be done in June and they
just got started two weeks ago.
Hopefully I'll be back on by mid December and there will be some good DX left
over (CW only for me).
Need to run a bunch of new radials as the excavation has torn up about 25% of
them.

Topband: ARRL DX Contest - Small Gun

2019-02-18 Thread Thomas Hoyer
Typically I deal with S7+ noise at my station and have been stuck at 90
countries for a few years now.
This weekend I found the band to be a lot less noisy then usual (S3 to S5) and
I was able to add three new countries. I heard two other new ones HQ and KL7,
but I suppose they couldn't hear me as I was not able to get a QSO with either.
I probably made over 30 DX contacts including two in Hawaii. This is very
atypical for me and I was excited to see the band in such good shape. Alas, I
was not able to be on at the end due to some family commitments.
I'd love to be able to finish up DXCC this this year but chances of getting 7+
new ones are probably slim over the next month or so.
Good stuff!

Very nice opening to start off the DX season here at my new QTH.  Worked a
handful of Northern Europeans with good signals.  Seemed like most of the
West Coast was working them - although maybe not down South.

Still only at 11 radials - but it felt like the system was working FB last
night.

The Hi-Z RX array really is working well too at its new home.  SM5EDX could
not be copied unless it was pointing North.

Found three noise sources - one was my switching power supply that I hooked
up while sitting right next to my radio and bandscope.  Not a good idea!!
Another one is a uv water purifier system that is located in the middle of
the RX array.  It generates a small noise over a 5 kHz spread.  Hoping to
fix it with some ferrite and shielding.

Great sign that conditions might be good for the PreStew which starts
tomorrow.

In my case I have been listening every night the last few weeks between 2300
and 0200 and find it hard to pick out anything due to the S7 to S9 noise levels
at my QTH. Not even worth calling CQ if I can't hear anything. I may
experiment with a receive antenna this year but I don't live on acreage for
100's of feet of wire. Plus I have power lines on three sides of my yard.
Heard a couple guys in 2/3 land work the OH0 last night - never heard him
myself.
I'm close to 80 countries on 160 and have been stuck there for about 3 years
due to the circumstances with noise and limited room for an efficient RX ant.

Subject: Topband: Why no NA 160m Activity?

I know you guys in North America have a lot of Lightning & Static problems
in the summer . . . but surely that's all gone now?

If so, why is there so little activity on CW from NA on Top Band?

Every night there's usually a load of us Europeans on from your Sunset time,
calling CQ DX.

The band is clearly open, from the RBN signal reports . . . but I'll often
come on for at least an hour, and lucky if I have 3 or 4 QSOs !  And even
then, it tends to be none of the big signals.

What makes it even more frustrating is that there's usually LOADS of people
posting FT8 contacts on the 160m DX Cluster . . . but very few proper CW
Stations !

I'm using a Battle Creek Special. I had plans to make some form of compact RX
antenna - no room for long wire antennas here - this fall, but other things got
in the way

Hello Tom:

I am curious what your topband RX antenna is?

I must be in a black hole as I have listened every night this week and heard
no EU. Probably doesn't help I have an S7 to S9 noise level
though

The band has been open for DX from Europe almost every night this week . . .
so let's hear some more activity from you North American guys! (I'm
usually on from around 23.30 Z)

However . . . I'm still amazed that there seems to be no peak in signals
around our Sunrise

(in the old days, when conditions were much better, signals would usually
increase by at least 10 to 20dB, both ways)
