The propagation favored Central America this morning and has brought a new and
a rare one — HP3AK.
Jay had a nice signal around and after SR here.
The TB season that was very fruitful is moving to an to end so it’s time to put
the long 50 MHz Yagi up.

Re: Topband: Musings on multiple 160m QSOs

2020-01-10 Thread Victor Goncharsky via Topband

I agree as well.
The problem for those chasing new ones is sometimes the fact that folks who
already worked, confirmed the entity that was accepted by DXCC Desk are still
calling and often stealing the chance from their fellow amateurs who need that
DX.
Generally they have the strongest signals and just are competing in their
Vanity Fair.
Another questionable idea is so called «DX Marathon» requiring to work the same
entity every year, month, week etc.
As for me, one DX QSO confirmed by QSL card and/or in LoTW and accepted by DXCC
Desk is enough.
We can work the same stations again and again in all kinds of topband contests
giving the points and multipliers to those who need them.
Good DX and the Happy New Year 2020.

HI Pete,
I use Russian B1B vacuum relays for all RF switching, for high power 160m
switching B2B vacuum relays are recommended. Hope you can get them there.
Good luck.

Re: Topband: Morning (W6 time) opening to European Russian today at ~1300Z during ARRL contest

2019-12-09 Thread Victor Goncharsky via Topband
Certainly the skip has favored Northern paths for the last several days.
We worked three Alaska stations since Friday - NL7S and KL7J on FT8 and KL7SB
on CW in the contest.
With only one CW QSO in KL7KY in 2013 it was an amazing adventure. KL7 was a
new one for Helen!
Hawaii was not that easy but managed to get  KH6/KU1CW in contest and K9FD on
FT8, well done Merv!
Tried to get the remaining States during the contest weekend, succeeded with
Wyoming but had not enough RF to get W0SD and K5HK.
Anyway the beginning of this season is quite promising.

Re: Topband: FT-8 vs CW

2019-04-25 Thread Victor Goncharsky via Topband
Just a short story for this FT-8 vs CW/SSB discussion.
We, with Helen UR5WA, have been waiting for QSL card from VR2XAN for 160m QSOs
in CQWWCW 2017.
Two direct requests both with IRC and $$$ have been sent but no answer.
Tried some Italian assistance - same result.
So the obvious decision was to give FT8 a try.
This resulted in VR2KW QSOs and the next day LoTW confirmation.
We have no interest nor intention to apply for Digital DXCC, but if there's no
other option we'll work new ones on FT8.  "The world is changed".

Re: Topband: Lack of NA Activity on CW

2019-04-23 Thread Victor Goncharsky via Topband
This is not always the case. I have noticed long openings to Caribbean during
last year 6m season with signal levels good enough for reliable CW QSOs but
only FT8 portion of the band was alive.
Will see what will happen this year. Top band game is almost over with the last
3 new ones worked in April (but missed XR0) so 6m antenna is on its way to the
tower this week.

Re: Topband: finding a site for greyline sunrise/sunset times

2019-02-28 Thread Victor Goncharsky via Topband

The special site or software are not needed.
The contest loggers,, TR4W in our case, show the SR/SS times after the prefix
is typed into the callsogn window. For sure most of the general QSO loggers
have this option.

HI folks,
I've problems with TOR browser in Ubuntu 16 so could not read mail.ru emails
blocked by UR government, including the ones from this reflector for quite a
long time. The problem has been solved.
As you probably know the licensing authority in Czech Republic started to
reissue the old 2X2 calls and many 2X3 owners have been changing their calls.
My assumption is that this OK1YQ could be the case or simply a computer error
at ARRL Hq.

Yes Carl, you're right.
And the scandal is again initiated by a well known scandalist UY0ZG, who was
expelled from Ukrainian Contest club, Black Sea Contest club and was a major
factor that has resulted in the recent problems inside Ukrainian Ham Radio
community that resulted in creation of alternative NGO-VRL amateur organization.

http://uarl.org.ua/index.php/novini/367-ofitsijna-zustrich-iaru-uarl-u-varshavi

Aside from intrigues this guy loves to blame Ukrainian Hams of "not having
receivers". For years his "victims" were US8ICM, UY5AA, US2WU, myself and many
others.
I, personally, don't pay attention to his crazy allegations.

Back to the DX discussion - 3C0W was strong in the middle of the nigh but no
sigh of TN5R.
CU all on Top Band and hopefully the moderador will do his job.

The problem of pile-up distribution is even more complex since there will be
four simultaneous African DXPeditions 3C, TJ, TN and TY. Therefore some
coordination between team leaders is needed. The good example of almost perfect
solution was VK0/FT4J case.

Last night they were weaker here in Eastern EU then the two previous days.
Have the country confirmed so didn't call.
Possibly future DX peditions will use the alternative RX antenna approach not
to feed locals with cupper wires.
Fortunately, pingwins don't steal wires so hopefully the Bouvet beverages will
be safe.

Thank you Manoj, it was more then hard but we did it!

I was running a WEBSDR under Ubuntu16 on 6 meters myself to control the quality
of my signal especially on JT65 so I know the technology from the inside.
If someone does not want anyone from outside the local area to use his WEBSDR
he can easily put the GEO-IP filtered access on.
Instead, we see the private correspondence being made public.
I was lucky to earn DXCC HR#1 long before new computer technologies started to
dominate the hobby so just having fun nowadays.

Re: Topband: Band Open - But No Sunrise Peak

2018-01-13 Thread Victor Goncharsky via Topband
Unsuccessful attempts to work PJ7 on 160 meters showed no SR peaks here in
KN29AU at all.
Worked a few NA folks in the middle of the night but no Carribbean.
Did not notice a JA SR peak either but looks like they are mostly on FT8 which
I'll possibly use on 50 MHz only, so have no idea of what's going on there.
On the other hand, surprisingly, a few VU2s with good signals and decent RX
abilities showed up recently giving not only a new country but a great
satisfaction and assurance that the TOP band is still alive.
HNY to everybody.

We have worked a new one last night VU2CPL on CW and played a little in
Russian-160 contest. Few NA folks were there as well. So the band is alive and
well. We don't care about FT8 junk.

IARU Region 1 160m Band plan:
1810 - 1838 200 CW,1836 kHz – QRP Centre of Activity
1838 - 1840 500 Narrow band modes
1840 - 1843 2700 All modes – digimodes, (*)
1843 - 2000 2700 All modes, (*)

There's no exclusive frequency for FT8 or any other K1JT mode.
Therefore using CW on any frequency is absolutely legal.

Topband: Last night

2017-10-28 Thread Victor Goncharsky via Topband
Last night has brought a new one - 4S7AYG. Roman UR0MC was at the key. He had a
strong signal on 80 m also.

I expected to get another new one - TZ4AM since Jeff had a good signal in KN29
but, as always, numerous CQs and mostly EA QSOs

JT modes were originally designed for VHF (59 MHz and up).
No reason to use them on HF and especially on Top Band.
We will not pay attention to those playing the childish FT8 toys on HF.

Re: Topband: TZ4AM

2017-10-16 Thread Victor Goncharsky via Topband
HI Stein,
What my good old friend Saulius wants to say is that there's no chance to work
TZ4AM from here in Central Europe unless one has 10 kW and at least full size
vertical. I'm personally not paying attention to both RBN and cluster 160m
TZ4AM spots anymore.
On the other hand, we have worked Jeff on other bands including 6 meters
without any problem.

Talking about Africa, since 2013, when I came back to 160m, the following
countries from that area have been easily worked:
3X, 5N, 5T, 5U, 5V, 6W, 9G, S0, TU, XT2 so African noise is not a major factor.
Finally, the skip can not be "wrong" day by day and month by month.
Occam's razor cuts this assumption off.

Raoul,
Tonight there was the usual TZ4AM's multi CQ with no response. Made a few calls
as need TZ on top but no answer. At the moment running 900w and 27.5m top hat
vertical so barefoot/dipole is not the case here.
Never had problems working that part of Africa, the only one missed last year
was TY2AC (we were out of the country at that time) but Nickolas has promised
to show up on 160 this season.
So the quesion is - how much power do I need to work Jeff? Will 5K be enough?

Wrong.
Both in SSB and AM cases the operator's skills and abilities are involved.
Even more of those are needed on CW.
On those JT modes an operator is just a computer accessory.

Topband: K3 remote power switching

2016-12-15 Thread Victor Goncharsky via Topband
Dear friends,
I am using K3 for remote operation. Recently we experience the increase  of
power failures here in Ukraine.
Despite of having 7AH battery as a PS buffer, sometimes when the electricity is
off for a long time, K3 is switched OFF.
This requires the trip to the remote site.
Is there an easy way to remotely switch K3 on and OFF through the serial port?
Does a software exists that is dealing with this.

I was trying to find the K3 menu item that will enable switching K3 back ON
when electricity is restored (like in all computer motherboards)  but could not.
Would appreciate the assistance.

The reason for not recognising it has nothing to do with ham radio.

Frank,
Being asked by ET7L crew, I have personally sent the scanned documents to ARRL
Hq on on June 30!
This includes their ham license which, actually, is the part of their work
permit-agreement issued by the Ministery which is, as I understand, is powerful
enough to authorise ham radio operation from ET.
The ET7L crew, in fact has been trying to get in touch with ARRL on the matter
in July, but got no response from Newington, their QSL manager US0LW said.
Frankly, this situation reminds me the 7O1YGF one.
Best regards,

Re: Topband: Out-of-Turn Callers DX Expedition finances

2015-02-07 Thread Victor Goncharsky
 Garry,
In the good old days when I was learning the art of ham radio from Don Miller's
DX and contest operations and my Dad UB5WF, I've got an idea of the ham spirit
that makes all of us equal under the Sun.
This is the corner stone of our hobby - the equality, no matter how much one's
paid for the hardware and antennae or has donated for a certain expedition.
You presume that although we are equal, the country which paid more is more
equal then the others.
I think this is completely wrong.
In fact, how can you distinguish between those US hams who paid and those who
not? Does it mean that their countrymen, in accordance with your theory, have
paid for their free lunch?
I was fortunate to have them all before the era of unproportionally expensive
dxpeditions and accompanying aggressive fundraising has come.

Re: Topband: 160m WAS (need WY and NV)

2015-01-24 Thread Victor Goncharsky
 Hi Jim,
Thanks for the response. I've wrote a request to both superstations but no
positive response.
Will be trying with KL7KY and WL7E. I was also advised to get in touch with
N7XM and N6ET in NV.
I did it and will start trying with both of them tomorrow at 0430Z. I'm usually
around 3530-3535 KHz depending of QRM.
According to NA reversebeacons, the peak last night was somewhere between
0515-0545
This leaves NE and I'm looking for someone there to try with.
Regarding WAS-160m which will be my ultimate goal for many winters ahead the
LoTW cfm list is below, no California.
US State 160M
Alabama (AL) K4IQJ
Alaska (AK) KL7KY
Delaware (DE) AA1K
Florida (FL) N4IS
Georgia (GA) K4PI
Hawaii (HI) K9FD/KH6
Iowa (IA) W0FLS
Maine (ME) K1UO
Maryland (MD) WA3MEJ
Massachusetts (MA) N1SV
Michigan (MI) N6FS
Minnesota (MN) AE5E
Mississippi (MS) N4OGW
Montana (MT) N9RV
New Jersey (NJ) W2GD
New York (NY) W2CCC
North Carolina (NC) K7BV
Ohio (OH) W8UV
Oregon (OR) N6TR/7
Pennsylvania (PA) NO3M
Rhode Island (RI) K1DT
Texas (TX) W5UN
Virginia (VA) K1HTV

Unfortunately I can't operate on Top Band due to a RF feedback that has
appeared from nowhere this fall. Trying to figure out what has happened but no
luck. Missing EP6...Sorry

Trying to be there on CW almost daily around my SR (0600Z) or much earlier.

Re: Topband: EP6T and outside world

2015-01-20 Thread Victor Goncharsky
 Hi Jim,
I think authorities did their best to allow ON folks all frequencies they
wanted.
The problem,I think, is purely technical. Their low band signals aren't strong
even here in KN29AU.
Just compare them to 9K2HN's on 160 in last contest.
So the problem is engineering - not political.

 Hi folks,
I have the receiving site in KN18QU with Afedri SDR-NET and bidirectional NW-SE

The distance between KN18QU and KN29AU (my TX site) is about 120 km.
So I'll be checklog in the coming contest or will not participate.

By the way I'm working hard to finish 5BWAS. Needing AK MT NE NV on 80m.

 Hi Mike,
We have the similar, very informative RUS-ENG site here.

Both me and Helen have finished our EM-EO90WF activity and are back trying to
complete our 5BWAS.
Planning to spend much time around 3533 this winter.
Needing AK, DE, HI, ID, MT, NB, NV, NM, ND, SD, UT, VT, WY
Last night the farthest was N0YY from IA but not a whisper from West Coast
Short Path.
Heard N7UA from WA on 3799.4 nicely yesterday via LP. Didn't call since this
state is confirmed letting others to have a new one.
On 160 situation is much worse with only 23 states confirmed.
But we're trying hard so if you hear us, please give us a call.
Thanks in advance.

Obviously one can't afford waisting 45 minutes to work a single multiplier

Seriously, I have finally was able to tune my new 27.5 meter vertical with 4
elevated resonant radials on 1820 or so.
SWR curve is very narrow but at least I can try to make a few CQs tonite. Will
use EO90WF special event callsign  http://qrz.com/db/EO90WF/ref/1397404382
If you hear me please beep at ON4KST.

Helen will be for EU and AS this evening as EM90WF as well.

Thanks in advance.

PS By the way, this long stick works very well on 80 and 40 meters and I wonder
if someone has experience with elevated trap radials.

Re: Topband: 75 ohm coax to twisted pair Adaptors

2013-09-19 Thread Victor Goncharsky
Hope this will be of some interest for those using twisted pair instead of
coax.
The company I work for is manufacuring all kinds of 75 Ohm / UTP balun adapters
and surge protection units.
The one I am using for my phased biderectional flags is "УПВ-МВ"

Sorry the site is in Russian only.

Re: Topband: High performance RX antenna at T6LG

2013-02-19 Thread Victor Goncharsky
 Arunas,
Was it shieded FTP-5, SFTP-5 or just unshieded UTP-5
At work we measured the single pair impedance being around 100 Ohm on 10 MHz.
Do you use any kind balun-transformer at the receiving end?
We make video survailance equipment transmitting composite video via twisted
pair up to 1 km.
Planning to use this method to get signal from remote FLAGS etc.

Re: Topband: New 160M high performance receiving antenna at W3LPL

2013-02-06 Thread Victor Goncharsky
I was taught this kind of antenna during two semester course at radio
department of Lvov Polytechnic at the begining of 70's. A lot of formulas and
diagrams...
UA1DZ (SK) used this kind of array of 12 vertical elements on 20-10 meters.
Unfortunately no information except the vertical element drawing remained.

Re: Topband: Need help to improve DX on 1/2 acre lot from CA(k...@juno.com)

2013-01-19 Thread Victor Goncharsky
 This is only partially true.
If a DXpedition is carefully planned, like, say, VP6DX and I'm sure upcoming
Clipperton will be, it will be heard by thousands and one needs everything
he/she has +1 dB to break through the pile-up of hundreds Europeans calling.
4SQ-ers/10K go first, then the real battle starts and that's the time when
every TX dB counts.
Anyway, we all are prisoners of the skip, which was awful lately.

Using them a lot between VHF and UHF boxes to break ground RF paths.
Really helps to prevens all kinds of unpredictable oscillation effects.
Planning to be on 160 this coming season to finish Tob Band DXCC required
for field checking.
In the mean time studying necessary technical references.
