Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Volume readout in dB?

2010-04-12 Thread mico1964

Every step in the volume range is 0.5dB. So if maximum level (volume
100) is 0dB, and you set the volume (for example) at 80, output level
is -10dB. The same for Squeezebox Duet.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Volume readout in dB?

2010-04-12 Thread erland

I'm sure we can create a patch for this which can be installed through
the Patch Installer applet, if I interpret the MusicInfoSCR code
correctly it calculates the dB value with the formula:
-abs(($vol / 2) - 50)

Is it the same for the Touch/Radio or should it be calculated some
other way ?
What does MusicInfoSCR display when:
- Max volume
- Middle volume
- Min volume

MusicInfoSCR displays:

Max: -0 dB (Maybe it's -0.0 dB, I can check this afternoon Scandinavian

Middle: -21.5 dB (e.g.) Equals 59 on standard readout
Min: -[indefinete sign]. Volume is off. Equals 0 on standard readout.

Thanks for looking into this, erland.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch showing error whith Flickr or Facebook pictures.

2010-04-12 Thread Sakkerju

My Touch is not showing Flickr nor Facebook pictures.
I have the Flickr applet as 'when stopped' screensaver, but when it
loads the applet and tries to show the pics, an error is shown:

Could not retrieve imagefile. Check player's network connectivity

I tried showing both my Flickr and Facebook picture albums, both are
not shown by the Touch and result in this error.

My SqueezeBox Radio has no problems with this (!?), so apperantly the
applet settings/account are fine. Facebook wall and Flickr tags etc.
are also available on the Touch.

I have SW versions:

Yes, you just need to create an image that contains all the meter
positions as those I linked in my previous post.

There are two ways to install it:
1. Login with ssh and replace the following file:
/usr/share/jive/applets/WQVGAsmallSkin/images/UNOFFICIAL/VUMeter/vu_analog_25seq_b.png

Or

2. Create a zip file with the file in the following structure and
install it through the third party Patch Installer applet which is in
my testing repository:
/share/jive/applets/WQVGAsmallSkin/images/UNOFFICIAL/VUMeter/vu_analog_25seq_b.png

To be able to install it with the Patch Installer applet someone will
need to create a repository xml file entry for it, but if you just
provide the zip file we can arrange that.

The disadvantage with installing it manually is that you will have to
repeat the operation after each firmware upgrade, with the Patch
Installer all installed patches can be configured to automatically be
re-applied after a firmware upgrade.

If you create a new visualizer image and decide to install it manually,
we all appreciate if you at least post the image here so other users
also can use it too.

 2. As such, my original comments about the analog output of the Touch
compared to the Lavry still stand. On day 3 of listening, things are
still very, very close for me. I think the Lavry is ever so subtly
better, but it is in the territory where I have to really work at it to
 notice.

So, in that sense, the analog output of the Touch is definitively
 superior to the SB3.

This seems reasonable to me - I've always found/felt the Lavry to be
quite transport-insensitive...OTH it always sounds like the Lavry.
Remember there's no such thing as a (truly) neutral DAC - they all
have some kind of sonic signature. Some dacs are more transport
sensitive and these I would expect to be improved by the Touch compared
to the SB3 - based on my own experiences and also the findings of
others such as Pat at ART Audio and John Swenson.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Musepac and USB Flash Drives

2010-04-12 Thread bhobba

Hi All

Does anyone know if the touch supports musepac the same way the the
original squeezebox did via trans-coding using slim-server or is the
trans-coding done in the touch itself? I know it says it is supported
by trans-coding but exactly what that means I am not sure.

Could I use a flash USB drive on the USB port without an AC adaptor?

From a USB drive will MPC files work without going through slimserver?

Thanks

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch direct connect to amp

2010-04-12 Thread mr_bill

To those that have received their new Touch:

Is anyone running direct connect - Touch straight to Amp?

Do you feel the need to run a high quality dac such as Benchmark or
better?

Are you having any trouble with gain matching between Touch and amp and
using digital volume control in its upper range?

I know there are a lot of variables involved with the gain matching,
just wondering what experiences the new Touch owners are having.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Good Practises

2010-04-12 Thread DigitalMitch

an update:

somehow or other (and possibly loading a n applet and subsequent
reboot) tinySC had got itself confused. ejecting and remounting USB
drive didn't help. Eventually the Touch rebooted and after the
subsequent USB remount started to scan - finding 53,927 files and
started to scan them (estimated time 2and a half hours).

I then put on the radio (triode's iplayer applet) and tim eleft for
scan started to increase!

Similarly playing some tracks, from the part scanned library worked
(with 5s delay and one hiccup after 2/3s play). Scan time left started
increasing again.

Switching to my normal server and scan appeared to be continuing (file
count increased) but time left was frozen at 596523:14:07 (had
previously been hours/minutes).

So, unsurprisingly, any extra tasks will increase time to complete a
scan.

Still nervous about what caused the initial scan hang-up.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Power cunsumption of Touch in server mode

2010-04-12 Thread Sturmhardt

Like many others I´m thinking about buying a Touch to get independent of
running PC while listening music. But: Did somebody measure the power
consumption of Touch with connected USB-drive?

Even 3 year-old laptops came with 25 watts in power-optimized mode (TFT
off, ports off, CPU underclocked) but can run the full SBS soft with
plugins. Is the Touch really an alternative if you don´t need the
Touch-screen (low-pun)?

I was definitely not questioning the results, actually I'm not

that if more people had the ability to instantly compare two devices as
opposed to relying on audio memory, there would be about half the number

 1. Login with ssh and replace the following file:

 Or

Thanks...I'll probably do this but I may not be fast about it. And
surely, I will share the files if I do it.

[SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?

2010-04-12 Thread Mr_Sukebe

Got my SB Touch today (my thanks Logitech) and very nice it looks too.

At the moment, I believe it's scanning the attached USB drive (which
will be used as it's music source). I've got roughly 1100 CDs cut onto
the HD and was wondering how I check progress of the scan whilst it's
running?
Any thoughts?

I have read elsewhere that it can take roughly 5 times longer than it
would on a PC. Last time I did a scan on my PC, it took roughly 45
mins, so should I be expecting a scan to take 3 hours?

Lastly, if I switch to another music source (e.g. my PC), then go back
to the USB HDD, will I need to re-scan it?

It depends on how you installed the existing Squeezebox Server on your
QNAP. The SB Touch requires SbS 7.5.0 or later. How did you install
SC/SBS on the QNAP originally? You may want to look at the QNAP threads

You guys are talking past each other.

You're talking about compression levels. He's talking about the
encoding (bitrate or sample size) of the digital stream itself. 24/96
is a lot more work for the decoder than 16/44.1 and the Touch is just
barely capable of managing it.

I get the distinct impression that FLAC was developed and optimized
almost exclusively with 16/44.1 in mind. It does poorly on anything
greater. At 16/44.1 the difference in processing required for -0 and
-8 compression level decoding is very small. I'm pretty certain that's
not the case for higher bitrate material.

In addition to the no artwork mode there are two sizes, referred to as
small/large, or touch/remote or 3/10. The small size is used when you
touch the screen, it has smaller text and buttons. The larger size is
used when you use the IR remote, it has larger text and no buttons. The
3/10 means 3ft or 10ft, the distance that mode was designed for. Thus if
your Touch is much greater than 10ft away even the larger size may be
too small. Its a little bit smaller than the largest font on the SB3.

In my case the rack is about 15ft away and the largest SB3 font is just
big enough, but the 10 Touch font is just a little too small for
comfort. If you are in this situation some form of controller with a
local screen might be best. I'm going to use second Touch for that!

 John S.

I could do with a 3/5 mode, as the touch will be on a bedside cabinet.
So the 10 text is too large :D

Content encryption. DSD data is encyrpted with an 80-bit key on the
disc.
The key is never transmitted on any bus, or anywhere outside the
proprietary SACD chipset.
SACD#8217;s encryption and decryption are available only in carefully
licensed and controlled hardware.

No, the built-in server can't access music files on the network.

If the NAS can export the drive as an NFS share, it probably can. But
it apparently cannot mount a Windows/CIFS/SMB share -- the firmware for
Touch released with 7.5.0 does not include the Samba client software
needed to do so. (Testing methodology: I SSHed to my Touch and tried
'mount' commands for 'smbfs' and 'nfs'. The 'smbfs' command fails
immediately, even for a valid Samba-ized UNC path; the 'nfs' command
returns an RPC connection refused error, suggesting that it would mount
an appropriately configured NFS drive.)

As I've suggested elsewhere, for performance reasons I think you'd want
to use a local SDHC card or USB drive for the cache directory for the
built-in Squeezebox Server instance, so an NFS setup would involve some
geeky Linux config file/command line work.

Practical DSD converter implementations were pioneered by Ed Meitner, an
Austrian sound engineer and owner of EMM Labs.

Meitner: I think every time there is a conversion, nobody could be as
arrogant as to assume that there isn’t going to be some loss.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Sales or discounts?

2010-04-12 Thread maggior

I just pulled the trigger on one from Crutchfield too! Thanks for the
code! Between that, free shipping, and not tax, I'm happy with the
price.

Guess I'll have to figure out what the issue was with 7.5.0 in my
setup.
