Bitperfect means the same information.
Different volume means different information, how could a different
volume contain the same information, after all, ALL audio information
is only volume information (at different frequencies).

It did however then tell me that my USB HDD was formatted in an

Owning a Squeezebox is becoming increasingly like owning a classic car.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Is Touch bitperfect at less than 100% volume on 16/44.1?

2010-05-26 Thread Mnyb

Yes the digital spdif is bit perfect until you are at <16 bits.
And the digital volume works with 24bit resolution.
So 6dB per bit gives you -48dB before the bits runs out .
(of course the increments are smaller than 6dB )

I have no idea what it represents is these 100 squeezevolume units ?
That are not even the same in all players .

So no signal degradation in the spdiff out itself at >16 bit levels
ok.

The interesting part is what happens next, this is often debated in the
audiophile forum search treads there, interesting read.

If you got an old 16bit or 18bit dac never use the digital attenuation
the spdif standard is such it discards the lower bits in the incoming
data if it cant handle it.

Yes the Touch is outputting 24bits at 100% volume even if play a
16/44.1 file, but the bottom 8bits are padded with zero's .

Also if you are feeding a digital HT preamp or reciever with the spdiff
you should also keep the volume at 100% as this device's has a lot of
processing and it's own digital volume control

Also no practical dac is 24bit if they for example has 120dB S/N ratio
a very good number, but 120dB it is 20bit of data, so the rest is
buried in the noise so this -24dB before you are down at 20bit ok .

And no dac is linear so they are not the same even in the usable 20bits
.

So in a practical application you get more noise and distorsion out of
the external dac as the volume goes down, everybody is in agreement
here.

Then opinions differ here, from that this effect can always be heard, to
that it does not matter because the volume is much lower so you won't
hear that its is "bad" anyway.

There are users that has abandoned the preamp and uses a squeezebox
with it's own dac's and passive attenuators to get a "decent" listening
level, and uses the upper range of the digital volume to do daily
adjustments, they will of course have some increased noise etc at lower
levels, but they are trading this against the noise and distortion of an
analog preamp .

This is of-course not night and day differences ,given small adjustment
at higher levels. You got to have a decent setup to hear this or to
imagine that you hear it ;) (imho placebo works even better in an high
end rigg because then you have a higher level of expectations,
regardless of the so called high end stereos real performance, some
components can be worse than a chinese dvd player even if they cost you
dearly, but the speakers are often always better.)

You welcome to the nitpicking at our audiphile forum and to roll in the
mud with us other audiophiles, but do not take the proceedings to
seriously this is a hobby and we are on the internet.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Is Touch bitperfect at less than 100% volume on 16/44.1?

2010-05-26 Thread JohnSwenson

Bit perfect is only at 100%.

What you are referring to is the "effective resolution". Since the DAC
has 24 bits the 16 bits can be attenuated a fair amount without loosing
effective resolution. But its NOT bit perfect. The bits are being
changed, but you are not losing dynamic range of the signal. The
decibels between the highest amplitude part of the signal and the
lowest amplitude part of the signal stay essentially the same. But its
not EXACTLY the same signal.

At some point as you decrease the volume you run out of the 24 bits and
low level detail disappears.

Its not just a fall off the cliff though. As you decrease the signal
level there are sources of noise that stay constant, the signal to
noise ratio will decrease as the volum4e goes down. In addition the
DACs are not perfectly linear over their whole 24 bit range. So even
though you have not run out of the 24 bits the 16 bits down lower can
have increased distortion. (we are not talking about much, but it is
there)

Thanks for the link. A little more info, so if one does the firmware
upgrade then it will now do FLAC. Guess they got some feedback or
pushback on not supporting FLAC. I'm not great at Asia or EU exchanges,
but when it cost more then a Touch in the same ad (same currency), I
still have to say the Touch has the edge especially where the WAP-8500
cost more and doesn't even have S/PDIF Coax out. But that is just me,
YMMV.

I guess I also don't understand how one is going to receive the
answer/opinion one is probably looking for from a Forum specifically
geared to the Squeezebox. A general audio equipment Forum would
probably be a better place to ask for a comparison.

There is a known bug that when going from one track to the next when

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Make a monitor or a tv display Touch's screen, is it possible?

2010-05-26 Thread JohnSwenson

I've actually put a LOT of thought into this.

It turns out that there are several different USB-> VGA converters
available on the market. The problem is most of them are designed to
work with Windows. The manufacturer of one of the chipsets has released
a Linux driver which with a lot of effort could be compiled for a Touch.
That gives you a second frame buffer. But you still have to write pixels
to it. At this point you have two ways, rewrite the low level graphics
routines to write to both frame buffers, or modify the existing
framebuffer so it goes ahead and copies whatever is written to itself
and to the new framebuffer.

Of course this will be an exact duplicate, pixel for pixel of the
Touch's screen. There is a problem, almost nothing else has the same
pixel dimensions so it will be interesting to see if anything would
display it or not. Even if it does you will have a very pixilated
display, there will be no "smoothing" going on.

Another option is to set the USB frame buffer up to a much larger pixel
size and write a new skin for that so fonts look good etc. That would be
WAY more work but could theoretically be done. Since there are a lot
more pixels being displayed it might slow things down.

So theoretically it could be done, but it might take a lot of work
which probably means it won't happen any time soon.

The reason it is not on the Touch besides not having room is because
the Touch like the Transporter has no need for it. Since the Touch
does not have builtin speakers the Touch would not be the correct
location to apply a low-freq crossover, the sub should do it. So you
would then just send full-range to the sub. In the case of the Boom
you are augmenting the built-in speakers so you know where the x-over
should be and just output the low freq.

Basically what I am saying is a Y-adapter would be no different than
what you plan to do with the transporter. That said your active
speakers most likely sound better with the balanced outputs. The
downside to the Transporter beside cost is the fact that the platform
is an aging platform and support will not be as good. Particularly the
displays on it are no longer manufactured.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Brightness Logic

2010-05-26 Thread Wizzu

I'm seeing this kind of issues too with my Squeezebox Touch.

When I turn off the lights in the room, sometimes the display dims but
then lights up again. Sometimes it just lights up immediately.

The most interesting effect has been after turning of the lights and
waiting a while, when the Touch would fluctuate between bright and
dark. First it would light and then immediately dim, wait a few
seconds, then repeat. Eventually it settled on the bright. I've seen
this a couple of times.

Manually I can adjust the brightness to very dim (actually I'd like it
even dimmer than what seems to be the lowest setting), but then it's
unusable when the room lights are turned on. There's no separate values
for "turned on" and "turned off" brightness levels like there used to
be. And there's no direct brightness adjustment button on the remote
now. :( So manual brightness is not really a solution, I don't want to
keep adjusting it every time when I turn the device on or off.

Apologies. Just found that having "fade in and out" set does not cause
the DAC to unsync but a short glitch is audible.

Seems that "crossfade" is causing the SPDIF to drop out.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Short audio gap 10 seconds before end of song

2010-05-26 Thread slackhead

Just finished about an hour and a half of investigating this again.

First I switched off SugarCube and created a playlist with three FLAC
files and two MP3s from differing albums and played them repeatedly on
the Touch (analog outs) with crossfade set to "Fade In and Out".
On most but not all changes of tracks a short glitch could be heard at
about ten seconds from the track end (I have crossfade set to ten
seconds). On occasions no glitch could be heard - I couldn't make any
sense of when this happened, sometimes the same crossfade of tracks
would cause a audible glitch and at other times would not or the glitch
was less obvious.

On changing the crossfade setting to "crossfade" it appeared to lessen
the occurance of the glitches however they did happen maybe about 50%
less than on "fade in and out".

Switching SugarCube on again appeared to make no difference.

One thing I noticed through these tests was that the glitching was much
less noticable than I had previously noticed, then I thought to check
through my external DAC, which is the way I usually have the Touch
operating.

It now appears that at the glitch point the DAC loses sync and mutes
for around two to three seconds which, (obviously) makes the glitches
more audible.

With the DAC it's now clear that the glitch is occuring more regularly
than noticed on the Analog Outs. I suspected that perhaps the tracks
were using different sampling frequencies and that this would be the
cause of the DAC dropping its sync but a quick check confirmed them all
to be 44.1kHz.

So just to summarize it appears that this drop out of audio is
occurring with both "crossfade" and "fade in & out" and that this is
also causing some kind of break in the SPDIF output which unsyncs my
DAC.

I am running SBS Version: 7.5.1 - r30804 on Windows 7 Pro and my Touch
is operating on wireless.

Hope that gives some help toward fixing the issue.

cheers, Richard

Considering that the Touch does not provide an output capable of
driving speakers you would probably be best driving the sub off of
whatever amp is driving the main speakers.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Review At Computer Audiophile

2010-05-26 Thread ralphpnj

Overall I would say that it a nicely written review and covers all the
major selling points of a Touch, especially for the "audiophile"
market. I agree that he goes a bit overboard with the plastic comments
but in the world of high end nothing sells quite the phrase "milled
from a billet of solid aircraft quality aluminum". I own one of the
those monster aluminum audiophile remote controls and the damn thing
doesn't even work half as good as the Touch's remote. If there's one
thing that Logitech knows, it's remote controls.

I also didn't like the reviewer's reference to the fact that the Touch
is not from Apple but than again the Computer Audiophile does seem to
worship at the altar of the high and holy "Steve Jobs". What puzzles me
is how one can claim to be an audiophile and yet still run iTunes. I've
said it many times before but it bears repeating: at this late juncture
it is completely unforgivable that Apple and iTunes still does not offer
native support for flac. Add in the fact that the iTunes store has yet
to offer any downloads in the Apple lossless format and Apple sins
against good quality computer audio are just unforgivable.

I can't really find a bunch of technical information on the device. But
from the ads it seems more expensive then the Touch. It looks like it
doesn't do FLAC or Apple lossless. It appears to have only an optical
Toslink digital spdif output (not both Coax & Toslink like the Touch).

I can find nothing on the DAC that it has or of the digital formats it
supports. All I found was a 95 dB SNR.

On the surface from what I was able to find, it appears lacking
compared to the Touch and has a higher price tag.

You can fix the viewing angle by attaching something to the rear bar of
the Touch. I put little stick-on rubber feet.

As for the size of the screen, I personally would not want a screen
that made the Touch any larger in physical size or more expensive. You
know prior to devices like the Touch, devices much more expensive than
it could not even tell you what song was playing at ALL :), heck some
could not tell you which track you were on!

However I would strongly recommend that if seeing the display from your
listening position is critical that the best option would be to get the
cheapest ipod touch and install iPeng. The iPad is another option,
however while iPeng app works on the iPad an optimized iPad version is
not *yet* available.

You should report this to the bug i think.

As you had tested the same HDD with same files and the only diff is the
total amount of files, very well defined case.

Someone logitech did test over USB, but i'll bet they just stuck some

Yesterday I installed the latest version of SBS (7.5.1/r30822) and
updated my Touch (r8810), in order to test the bug 15361 fix
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15361), but unfortunately,
this new version does not solve my problems when using TinySC.

I have certain 24/96 files which give me constant rebuffering problems
(sometimes, on the same album, certain files are OK and others aren't),
when reading them with TinySC from a 1.5Tb LaCie HDD (USB formatted)
containing 400Gb of Music (1200 albums).

As I reported before, I have no problem when reading these same files
with TinySC on the same HDD, when there are only a couple of albums on

So it seems that the size of the database influences the CPU usage in

Let's hope that other code optimizations will be made in the next

Having had the device for over a month now, my views are largely

It's interesting to read in other forums users discussing what they use

The sound quality is great and the functionality of streaming services

I had the brightness first set to automatic, but it was too irritating
because the brightness started to "bumb" when I switched the lights off
in the room. Setting it to manual helped. Could this your finding be the
reason for the slow varying of the brightness level in the auto setting?
