[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch won't play since server reinstall
Hi guys, From day 1 I managed to get my 2 squeezebox touches working straight after unboxing them. I installed the server onto my laptop where my music is stored and it worked really well. Last night I had to rebuild my laptop and reinstall the server. Now, the touches say they can see my laptop and the server can see the touches but when I hold down on the album I want to play and select play now it doesn't do anything. Any ideas? Also, I wanted to know if there is a way of when I browse genre and select one if I could see just the albums in that genre as opposed to all artists? Thanks. Certainly more expensive than a USB drive, but for the car I would be tempted to either not carry my entire music collection or do what I do for my iPod and convert it to smaller files and different type files. BTW, OCZ makes a very good 30GB drive called the Vertex for under $120. I use one for the OS on my server and a 1GB RAMDISK for SB server software. I can rescan 7,000 flacs in 4 minutes with that setup and rescan in 40 seconds. I love it. -- Howard Passman Can I go home now? Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch won't play since server reinstall
Ok, so I've had a bit of time to mess around with this. I have answered my own question about browsing the genres. You can browse by album if you scroll right to the bottom to select albums I can play music from my library but when I do a long touch on the album to bring up the menu the only option it won't let me select is play I can add it to favourites or add to the playlist or play next but I can't get it to play there and then. Has anyone else had this problem or know why it has happened? Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SB Touch + NAS advantages?
From my listening experience running the internal server playing WAV files offers about the same SQ as external server streaming flac (flac decoding on Touch). Thus external server streaming PCM (from whatever source) sounds better than playing WAVs on internal server. Other people will disagree with this, but thats what I hear. Please don't get the impression that I'm saying using the internal server sounds bad, that is not true. I'm saying the internal server sounds very good, but an external server streaming PCM sounds REALLY good! Again others will disagree. I know of one person who prefers the sound of the internal server to an external server. But I know a lot of people who prefer an external server streaming PCM to the internal server. The internal server runs close to the edge (memory and CPU wise) all the time. It doesn't take much to push it over the edge. Even the sheevaplug has much more memory and CPU power, this will give a much more robust experience. Things like a file with a large embedded image can cause the internal server to crash, but would work fine with the sheevaplug. Scans will definitely run quite a bit faster on the sheevaplug than on the internal server. There are some circumstances where people have had stuttering of files etc, that go away when using an external server. Then there is added functionality. The sheevaplug SBS will have a webui which the internal server does not. Even if you don't plan on doing regular controlling functions with the webui, having it makes server configuration MUCH easier. With the internal server any configuration changes have to be done by logging into the Touch with SSH and editing configuration files. The sheevaplug server will allow you to add third party plugins to the server. You cannot do this with the internal server. The internal server is limited to a maximum playlist length of 100 songs. Its much larger for the external server. You are going to have to decide whether any of this is important to you.
