[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch won't play since server reinstall

2010-07-16 Thread Davey-boy

Hi guys,

From day 1 I managed to get my 2 squeezebox touches working straight
after unboxing them. I installed the server onto my laptop where my
music is stored and it worked really well.

Last night I had to rebuild my laptop and reinstall the server. Now,
the touches say they can see my laptop and the server can see the
touches but when I hold down on the album I want to play and select
play now it doesn't do anything. Any ideas?

Also, I wanted to know if there is a way of when I browse genre and
select one if I could see just the albums in that genre as opposed to
all artists?

Thanks. Dave

[SlimDevices: Touch] Tracks finishing early and skipping to next song

2010-07-16 Thread matengawhat

Hi hope someone can help tried to key word search but can't find an
answer

I have my touch connected to a usb hard drive and plays fine most of
the time but on a regular basis it just skips to the next track - if i
go back to the track it then plays fine - it is as though someone has
pressed next track on the remote any ideas?

I've had an Iomega eGo USB HD under my dash for several years, never
skipped a beat (pun intended). ;)

The prices for SSD's are coming down and some models have a USB port on
them. No worries about bumps even if you drive off road.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Why a microphone in the touch?

2010-07-16 Thread seth_space

In a test on tweakers.net (dutch site, sorry) they noticed there's a
Microphone build on the board on the lower left corner of the touch.
Any thoughts why?

Absolutely, and looking forward to it.
But until SSD's are more price competitive with USB drives it's not a
viable option for many.
320 gb Iomega eGo USB = $80
32 gb SSD = $180

For many users SSD's don't have the capacity (at any price) for ones
music collection.

You DO have to be willing to do some simple linux command line stuff to
get it up and running. Its not hard and there are detailed instructions
 on how to do it.

Hi John,
could you tell me where can I found instructions and what a big step
up from running the internal server is? What benefits gives me a
SheevaPlug against TinyServer? I use wav not flac format so the place
of decoding is not vital.
Tnks in advance.

I am also interested in further info on the benefits here

If anyone else has made the move from internal server to external,
especially with the Sheeva plug, I would be very grateful for their
feedback.

Thanks..

Certainly more expensive than a USB drive, but for the car I would be
tempted to either not carry my entire music collection or do what I do
for my iPod and convert it to smaller files and different type files.

BTW, OCZ makes a very good 30GB drive called the Vertex for under $120.
I use one for the OS on my server and a 1GB RAMDISK for SB server
software. I can rescan 7,000 flacs in 4 minutes with that setup and
rescan in 40 seconds. I love it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch won't play since server reinstall

2010-07-16 Thread Davey-boy

Ok, so I've had a bit of time to mess around with this. I have answered
my own question about browsing the genres. You can browse by album if
you scroll right to the bottom to select albums

I can play music from my library but when I do a long touch on the
album to bring up the menu the only option it won't let me select is
play I can add it to favourites or add to the playlist or play next
but I can't get it to play there and then. Has anyone else had this
problem or know why it has happened?

Plaseee, it's really bugging me now

This has been a known problem since day 1. Do a search. Some have had
luck when connecting a HDD to the Touch, but most have the same problem
you do. There are no known fixes at this point.

[SlimDevices: Touch] 7.6 testing - Native WMA Pro and Lossless

2010-07-16 Thread andyg

I've spent the last few days getting native WMA Pro and Lossless support
working on Touch (and Radio).

If you have any WMA Pro/Lossless files please give 7.6 a try. You will
need SBS 7.6 r31054 or later from

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SB Touch + NAS advantages?

2010-07-16 Thread JohnSwenson

From my listening experience running the internal server playing WAV
files offers about the same SQ as external server streaming flac (flac
decoding on Touch). Thus external server streaming PCM (from whatever
source) sounds better than playing WAVs on internal server. Other
people will disagree with this, but thats what I hear. Please don't get
the impression that I'm saying using the internal server sounds bad,
that is not true. I'm saying the internal server sounds very good, but
an external server streaming PCM sounds REALLY good!

Again others will disagree. I know of one person who prefers the sound
of the internal server to an external server. But I know a lot of
people who prefer an external server streaming PCM to the internal
server.

The internal server runs close to the edge (memory and CPU wise) all
the time. It doesn't take much to push it over the edge. Even the
sheevaplug has much more memory and CPU power, this will give a much
more robust experience. Things like a file with a large embedded image
can cause the internal server to crash, but would work fine with the
sheevaplug. Scans will definitely run quite a bit faster on the
sheevaplug than on the internal server. There are some circumstances
where people have had stuttering of files etc, that go away when using
an external server.

Then there is added functionality. The sheevaplug SBS will have a webui
which the internal server does not. Even if you don't plan on doing
regular controlling functions with the webui, having it makes server
configuration MUCH easier. With the internal server any configuration
changes have to be done by logging into the Touch with SSH and editing
configuration files.

The sheevaplug server will allow you to add third party plugins to the
server. You cannot do this with the internal server.

The internal server is limited to a maximum playlist length of 100
songs. Its much larger for the external server.

You are going to have to decide whether any of this is important to
you.
