 the best sound.

Yep that's in fact the challenge. Doing things right!
Though if products sell well, you got it done right! ;)
It's always a matter of perspective.

Soundwise, 99,9 % of those products out there are affected.
All manufacturers have to live with certain compromises.

Though I think we should put this discussion into the right
perspective. We're talking highest-end stuff here.

At 250$+PS+SW mods, you'll able to achieve audiophile levels with the
Touch.
And there is still some space left. I could live with my setup for a
long long time.

Cheers

I'm wondering if they like what they read over here resp. find at my

1. There's not much left of that original product by the time you're
done with the mods. It'll be a Duet II kind of device. No frills ,
just sound!

2. And then there is the transporter. (Although Mercedes is not making
the money with the S-class.)

3. And I pretty much propose things the other way around as they're
doing it. Flac decoding on the server etc..

Still I think if words spreads around about that added audiophile
potential they gonna sell even more Touches.

If they want to talk about integrating my solution -- I'll be here.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Registered Logitech product, got 20% off Touch!

2011-01-15 Thread urardo

I got a 10% voucher for registering my M705 mouse yesterday. But I
bought the M705 with a 20% trade-in voucher (valid on any purchases for
the next month) on a very old MX-510 mouse - the trade-in offer is
clickable from the Logitech website. Print out a label, and the voucher
code is instantly live. So any old Logitech stuff hanging round is worth
money off!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0

2011-01-15 Thread Flextreme

Klaus, I got a couple of questions.

1. Does the SB3 allow same kind of soft-modifications? Just curious...

2. I did not invest in the PSU yet. I respect Phil's and SeanAdams
critical opinion about this topic in regards to the SB Touch, the PSU
of the Touch is much already much better than SB3. I realize that this
topic has been completely discussed to death, and it is not difficult
to predict what their perspective is, especially when it comes to the
impact on the digital out.

I am interested what your experience is. You recommend the PSU upgrade
(specifically the Sbooster filter component) on your blog, and I can
imagine how it could improve the analog output (the PSU is a key
component in NAIM's vision on sound quality, and I experienced it
my-self with the Hi-CAP upgrade). But what can I expect when I'm only
using the digital out? Is the difference just as noticeable as your
soft-mod?

3. Lastly, when the mod is activated I see there are multiple
components to it. I understand the potential impact of disabling
featutes/input/outputs. But what do the other mods do?

Too many questions...

New playlist.

Browsing to my network

Then \\SQUEEZEBOXTOUCH\media-sda1\flac albums and adding in the files

Then File Save playlist - as M3U and saving in
\\SQUEEZEBOXTOUCH\media-sda1\playlists.

The playlist name appears on squeezecommander and Touch but no files!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0

2011-01-15 Thread Flextreme

Just finished a blind A/B comparison (through some scripting),
randomizing the enabling or disabling of SoundCheck's mod.

Out of 16, I got 10 times right. To be honest, my subjectively
perceived difference is (much) bigger than objective one (doing blind
A/B's).

I clearly prefer the modded Touch emotionally, and still do. The
blind comparisons learned me however that the difference is very
subtle, and not that simple to identify (in my set-up, I cannot speak
for others). Doing blind A/B's is actually not a very relaxing
activity. The subjective difference in sound quality is far greater,
which is OK for me. But if you expect/hope for whatever reason a better
sound quality (expensive cables is a very good example in my mind), it
is truly difficult to be objective. Seems like this is just my own
little reality check. :-)

Interesting. Could you tell us more about the details of your A/B

length of time you listened, genre of music, etc.?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Stutter at startup on 24/96 FLAC

2011-01-15 Thread marcot

I have the same setup SBTouch and Qnap TS-210 and the same kind of
problem, but mine is with normal 16@44.1 files.
Now it seems to have gone.
I went to the advanced-performance tab of Squeezebox Server and did as
follows:

1. disable library statistics
2. choose resizing instead of resampling for covers
3. choose NOT to insert covers in cache

To my opinion it might have had little to do with this, but the SS GUI
has improved a lot in speed and also the stuttering has gone, at least
so far.

Hope it helps you too.
Ciao

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] noob q - prob connecting USB 3TB Seagate Goflex USB 3.0

2011-01-15 Thread 59volvo

Adding a new data point - I am concluding that the Touch does not work
with the big Seagate 3TB drive for unknown reasons. After trying
reformatting again as NTFS, verifying that there is only 1 primary
partition and only storing music files on the 3TB Seagate Goflex I
could not get the touch to access the files when plugged into the USB,
but could get it to read the files wirelessly when plugged into my
computer. I got a Hitachi 1TB USB copied a few files and plugged it
into the Touch's usb and it plays fine. The Hitachi is formatted FAT32
while the Seagate was NTFS.

[SlimDevices: Touch] A Quick Question about Album Cover

2011-01-15 Thread souwalker

Hi

What would my issue be if I search by album and I do not see the album
cover but when I play the album via 'Mow Playing', the cover art is
displayed? This only happens with one CD.

Currently all my cover art is a jpg named 'cover.jpg'.

Many Thanks
Pat

There is no cut and dried answer to that question. Its going to depend

The only really good way to find out is to try different combinations.
A number of people really like optical with a multi-strand glass cable.
They are a bit more expensive than the regular plastic ones, but in some
 circumstances can sound very good.

The hard part is you need to try several different cables (price does
NOT automatically mean its going to sound best). In my system the best
coax cable is a cheap little thing that came with my first external DAC
MANY years ago. It beats out some quite expensive cables.

Really. If you understood basic schoolboy physics then you wouldn't be
posting such diatribe.

Why would coax be any better than fibre over about 2 feet?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Stutter at startup on 24/96 FLAC

2011-01-15 Thread Mnyb

If anyone followed the bug on this, you migth have noticed that I had
some problems lately.

This was caused by a problem with the database , I have to do an
analyse; with an sqlite3 tool to fix it.

SBS is suposed to this every scan but it failed for some reason in 7.6
beta .

Now it's working again.

Database access was very ineficient before i fixed the problem.

Clear and rescan everything did not help, but maybe a complete cache
delete had fixed it ? who knows, if sbs had to build a new dB from .
The bug may not be in the latest 7.6 beta can very well be that an
earlier version borked it.

Now i get 10% cpu spikes instead of 100% when starting an album and
cued up ca 1400 24bit tracks in one playlist and it worked.

A reminder that running 7.6 beta can get you unusual problems for
example a small risk of getting a broken dB .
7.6 is very nice but it is beta so anything can happen.

The developers help me finding the cure for the problem thankyou,
hopefully they have in the process learned that it does happen in the
feild, so it was not a complete waste of their time.

Hmm the file paths are probably not the sane for your laptop and he
server in Touch.

A playlist in sbs must have a complete absolute path .

Open a playlist done with the Touch itself in notepad or wordpad have a
look at theese paths .

Now do a search and replace in that other playlist and scan it again.
