Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0

Update:

Disregard those figures. I found a way to isolate the Perl module in
the activity monitor, and I queued up a FLAC album (previous figures
were based on an old OGG album). The Perl process seems to maintain a
continuous level of network traffic at around 110-140KB/sec, until
about 40 seconds from the end of a track, when it drops to around
25KB/sec. At about 10 seconds from the end it spikes to 1.6MB/sec. So
it seems as though that spike is the player filling the buffer with the
next track, and then the buffer is topped up continuously until near
the end of the track (-40s) when the whole of the remainder of the
track is in the buffer.

So all that this shows is that, for the Mac at least, the period
between -40s and -10s should be virtually free of network traffic, and
should sound better than the rest of the track if there's anything to
this theory.

I'm gonna play a wav file from SD-card with aplay from Touch

And just to mention it: All PC based audiophile players use mainly
full file RAM buffering. Mainly to avoid heavy I/O load during

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Instructions for connecting USB DAC to Touch

2011-02-02 Thread JohnSwenson

Hi Everybody trying to get async USB DACs working with the Touch, this
seems to have become a very big deal in the last week. I have been
receiving tons of off list communications on this. I have received a
loaner HRT music streamer II to try and work out the issues and am
starting testing on this.

Unfortunately trying to answer all the private communications is taking
away from the time I have to work on issues. So from now on I'm not
going to answer individual communications for awhile. I'm not trying to
be rude I'm just trying to get to a solution as fast as possible.

So if everybody would please try and chill out for a few days I'll
spend as much time as I can on the testing and get back here when I
have some results. I probably won't be posting here either for several
days while I'm focusing on the testing, don't take this as I don't
care, I'm just focusing on it.

Again I apologize if this sounds rude, thats not the intention, I just
want to get to a solution as soon as possible.

I forgot to mention that my figures are for an unmodified Touch, so the
size of the internal buffer is as Logitech intended. Am I understanding
correctly the effect of the buffer reduction mod in believing that the
Touch will be able to store less audio as a result of reducing that
buffer size? If so, I guess a modified Touch will suffer from this
continuous network traffic even during that golden -40s to -10s period.

My buffer mod refers to the Alsa buffer size on the output. Which is
4000us.

What you are refering to is the streaming buffer on the input receiver

It's currently not as easy to configure as the RSS News Ticker where

just read the configuration from the RSS News Ticker plugin.

This is a reasonable workaround. Seems to be working for me. Is there
a place (parameter) to indicate how deep (how many items) to display in
a given RSS feed. For example is it possible to indicate to just
display the first 10 items, rather than the entire feed?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch not finding some flac files during scan?

2011-02-02 Thread Charles_Damar

Thanks garym! That was it. I needed to clear and rescan instead of
search for new music. Is that a bug in the Squeezebox server? And yes I
am able to play the flac files in foobar2000.

New issue related to this though --- the live show tagger that I used
tagged the files so that the live concert shows up as a separate folder
than in its artist folder even though the artist is the same and the
artist name is in the new tag. Also, the sqeezebox touch is not
recognizing the artist name at all - it says no artist despite having
the artist name in the folder name. It did read all of the song titles
correctly.

Any experience with this using live liveshowtagger?

probably not a bug, but the find new scan often doesn't work well if
there are other files with same name, or other issues. clear and rescan
is the sure way to pick up all changes.

I've used liveshowtagger in the past. been a while. I suspect the issue
is your tags in general. after using liveshowtagger, I'd install mp3tag
and open these flac files in mp3tag and really make sure your tags are
exactly what you want. Once the files are in your active window, right
click in a few and select extended tags. This will show you ALL the
tag fields that exist and the value. I suspect something is up here.
Make sure you use only the regular FLAC tags (NOT ID3v2 tags inside a
FLaC file). Flac tags are called vorbis comment tags

to be a happy Squeezebox user you really need to take control over your
tags. and mp3tag has a bit of a learning curve but you'll find it to be
a very powerful tagging program

[SlimDevices: Touch] downsampling 24/96 to 16/44 or 16/48 on squeezeserver

2011-02-02 Thread miab

I use a 16/44.1 dac that I am very fond of and have no plans to change.
I have collected some 24/96 files that I use to play analogue out from
the Touch but since I am now spdif to a dac I want to be able to play
those. What would the procedure be to do this? I have looked under
settings in Squeezeserver but cannot find a solution. Any suggestions?

My dac is actually a 18 bit dac but I'm not sure if downsampling to
18/48 has any advantages.

Thanks in advance

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] downsampling 24/96 to 16/44 or 16/48 on squeezeserver

2011-02-02 Thread Mnyb

Theoretically Downsampling require dithering for best possible quality.

If the DAC gets wordlegth 18 it's going to truncate that is not as
nice as dithering.

But you have to try to see if you can hear any difference.

Try with some suitable software and make such files.

Btw if you are going to make downsampled copies make 172.4 and 88.2 to
44.1kHz
and 192 and 96 to 48kHz , otherwise some kind of not nice re-sampling
can be introduced, so an even multiple is the best choice.

More experienced members can maybe help you write a custom-convert.conf
file to get this performed on the fly with flac and SOX .

If you have a server with some CPU (not NAS)

There is no simple settings to change ,you have to specify your own
custom conversion rules in a custom-convert.conf and put that in the
same folder as the convert.conf file .

You can write an enhancement request in bugzilla that dac capabilities
should be a setting in sbs and rally some votes for it on the forum,
just an idea. It's an very odd request

I've had the same problem since the upgrade to 9283. I thought it was
because I'd removed the USB disk to update the files, so relieved (sort

I've also tried speaking to the helpline but they've been useless.
They're obsessed with my PC and want log files from my PC and to know
what version of the server my PC is running. I keep explaining to them
that I'm using the Touch as my server and that my PC is irrelevant, but
I don't think they're listening... Has anyone got any idea how to get a
log file off the Touch?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] My Album Art went poof!

2011-02-02 Thread Dieter6581

Hi mraliman,
one option is to download SqueezeboxServer-7.5.1.exe and install it
to your (Windows-) PC as a server. If your touch connects to the PC it
tells you, that there is an update (7.5.1) available.
Another way (and easier) is to download the file fab4_7.5.1_r9218.bin
from http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.5.1/ and store it

Hope this helps.

If you really have no plans to change, simply resample (a copy of) the
files to 16/44.1 using DBPoweramp, Foobar or similar...

Alternatively, you will need to edit custom_convert.conf.

What format are these files?
FLAC?

THE FOLLOWING WILL NOT WORK UNLESS YOU HAVE A PROPER SERVER FOR SBS!

If flac, add these lines to your custom_convert.conf file, replacing

[SlimDevices: Touch] Wrong time showing on Touch?

2011-02-02 Thread justpete

Pretty annoying! I checked mysqueezebox.com, and the time settings are
correct... the time on the server is correct as well. My Squeezebox
classic shows the correct time.

How can I fix this? I suppose I could lie about the time zone... I
guess that would fix it for now. Is this a bug or something?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch As Pre-amp

2011-02-02 Thread mraub1

The office was closed today because of the midwest blizzard which gave
me some time to play. I decided to haul up a couple of Polk LSi 9's
from the basement HT to see how the Touch would work as a preamp
directly into an Emotiva XPA-2. It worked very well. The Polks are
rated at 88db sensitivity and a volume of 65 or so was a comfortable
listening level with most material. The Magnepan's I have on order are
a few db less sensitive. If I decide the preamp I've ordered doesn't
improve on the Touch I'd probably put in some in-line attenuator's to
keep the touch volume control in the 85-90 range.

Anyway, the Touch does work just fine as a preamp.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Unusual dropouts streaming radio via my squeezebox.com

2011-02-02 Thread dicy

Hi all

I have been experiencing very odd dropouts whilst streaming radio
paradise through the squeezebox touch (via my squeezebox.com).

I am getting very regular dropouts but they take the form of
stuttering, sometimes literally stuttering and sometimes with gaps of a
few seconds. It almost sounds like static or interference at times.
Usually dropouts just take the form of no sound at all for a period,
but this is different.

I also checked it with other stations and it also occurs with them too!

Has anybody got any ideas, the touch is via a new rega dac and the
connection is wireless. I replaced my router a few weeks ago and have
had a totally stable connection since, with no dropouts in connection
(I work from home, so I'd know)

Cheers

Rich

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Newbie with Questions for the Experts

2011-02-02 Thread tmauceri

I've been using DVD Audio Extractor to rip flac files in there native
resolution from DVD-A discs I own, in stereo of course. I read in one
of the forums, this one or AVS, That the SBT will play back DD or DTS
files in 5.1 as long as they are decoded and ripped to flac. These
files would be 24/48. I know optical or coax out can support this
resolution, but hadn't read anything about the SBT being able to play
multi-channel media. So I ripped Donald Fagen's The Nightfly in 5.1
24/48 and tried playing it through the SBT, but all I got was stereo in
and out. Will the SBT support 5.1 as long as the Rez doesn't exceed
24/48 or 5.1 at all?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] wrong album art for some albums

2011-02-02 Thread SlimPvC

Upon checking the album art in detail I noticed that in some part in my
collection (somewhere in the A-I folders) there were some anomalies in
the album art: the embedded files were OK, but the folder.jpg's were
sometimes mixed up, wrong files from different albums. Looks like some
copy or disk error from some time ago (they were all older files).
Of course I did not notice this when still using the SB2.
It seems the album art scan became mixed up with this...since
correcting it manually the problem disappeared and the Touch is now
showing the correct album art.

I also updated to 7.6 and noticed some differences in that, too, so
that may also have helped.

Thanks again for all suggestions helping me to solve this

believe your ears -- the sound is much punchier (pun intended),
especially if you keep your RPG indicators in the low columns (say,

The Touch will reset its time when it connects to mysb.com or to an
external sbs server or when it reboots. If none of those things happen,
the clock will gradually drift.

To resync the clock, press the reset button on the back briefly (or

Is the time correctly set on your server? That's where the Squeezebox
time comes from. My server (a linux box) gets its time via NTP, which
keeps my Squeezeboxes in time.
