This all makes me think that I really made the right decision when I purchased an extra Touch earlier this week from my local store. I guess there is a chance Logitech is about to release something new that replaces it but there is also a chance they have decided to focus on the cheaper Radio since that's likely a lot easier to sell to the mass market compared to the Touch. -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets (both free and commercial)' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland). Very interestingly since I started off this discussion 6 days ago, the Dixons Group stores have cleared out all their stock and Logitech (in the UK at least) have also run out of stock, whilst on-line stores (inc. [SlimDevices: Touch] what went wrong?
I disconnected my hard drive frm my touch to add some new albums and add artwork. Now when I reconnected it did a scan and all but it will not play sound. the little thingy moves to tell me the song is playing, the seconds count down, but there is no sound coming out. The diskdrive light tells me it is reading but there is no sound. Internet radio plays sound quite alright, but my albums give no sound. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] New Owner
Well I converted the ones that didn't show to Flacs, as well as checking the ones that didn't show that were flacs and I have no idea why they do not show. Meta data didn't seem to make any difference and the file permissions for those that work are the same as the ones that don't. The only thing wierd about the ones that don't show is they are rare. There are some Tas Absolute Sound ones and none of them show up. Also there are a few "Audiophile Voices" and one of them works but not the rest. Others are albums that are working but not some of the other versions of the same albums. But all in all this thing sounds great. I really don't think I need the cd player anymore and will probably sell it. So its a couple of Musical Fidelity Power Amps going into a M.F. Preamp, connected to Ruark Speakers and a squeezebox with a M.F. Vdac 2 and not a cd in sight LOL I wish I could get the rouge files to be scanned cuase it's not the same off the computer direct. But this squeezebox sounds great and I am happy anyways. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] LMS transcoding 192/24 material
No squeezebox can do more than 24/96 the squeezebox receiver and SB3 does 24/48 The transporter does 24/96 . But I would not worry to much the amount of material avaible in 24/192 is a very limited selection and if it's from HD tracks also of questionable pedigree and if is a remaster of a some 40 year old rock favorite a complete overkill . And further even with the best recording in the world it is not possible for a human being to hear a difference between 24/96 and 24/192 . It is the actual recording that is the bottleneck not the transport format, most recordings ever made are not better than the CD format ,( given a good mastering with proper dither ) most are far worse. You will not need a 10 liter bucket to carry around 1 liter of water. Of my >1600 tracks in 24 bit 48k 96k or 192kHz (one album) maybe 30% of the recordings can be said to be worth it if I would be nice to the engineer that did them . My own equipment downsample 192k>96k Meridian Gear work internally in 24/96 for it's processors and digital speakers. Their designer is of the opinion that it is not necessary, that the numbers game ends in 24/96 . 24bit is in itself a great achievement fs above 48khz is a good bonus but not an absolute must the increased bit dept is most of the improvements in hirez. Some people are of the opinion that 24/48 is good enough for very good reason that are hard to dispute (controlled listening test where no one can hear any difference, key word is controlled). I rather unscientifically thinks 24/96 is good enough for all purposes, this would also have a healthy slush marging for technical errors in the digital domain. I can not even prove that. Also no practical audio circuitry for example DAC's are better than 20-21 bits on a good day thats the best stuff, even if the DAC say 24 or 32 bit on the sticker . So personally I stopped worrying about it long ago , the reality of it crept in during the years i tried to use the now dead DVDA format . It was "better" than the likewise dead sacd formats for a number of reason , a major one it's obscurity sacd must have sold at least 10 times better but the amount of "real" hirez recordings and really good recordings have newer been great. So the sacd catalog contains more fakes than the dvda catalog. (Which HDtracks learned the hard way when they happily digitized sacd and let the customer discover that they where bogus) . On the surface the absence of native 24/192 may look as problem but it's not, you can always find a bigger problem in the recording or your own equipment or room. that must be fixed before 96 vs 192 becomes a factor. Given the choice if I buy 24/96 instead of 24/192 you pay less and there is no audible difference . The Denon is probably great for it's purpose but it is a home theater receiver, they have reputation of building very transparent machines but anyway, the type of equipment has limits. Thats my 2c after some years in search of the hirez grail -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] LMS transcoding 192/24 material
Thanks Mnyb (that's the second time :-) ) Is the receiver capable of receiving 192? Tonight I did some A/B testing with my Touch Analog/Denon AVR 1912 and Touch Coax/Denon AVR 1912. It seems that the analog (100%) sometimes saturates the analog input of the receiver (distortion!) so I was looking for more advanced material. The touch/LMS should not have to do a transcode as the Denon is capable of using 192 material. But the LMS might not know that =) . Touch can handle bitrates up to 24/96 the server transcodes 24/192 to 24/96 and 24/176.4 to 24/88.2 so the transcoding is taking place in the server . Touch itself does not have the cpu power . Also dismiss the bogus bitrate reported by the player UI 24/192 > is transcoded to 24/96 . The files are all flac, (what else is there), and I have around 20,000 tracks all in Folders. Each Folder maybe has an artist then inside is all their albums. Most have been ripped with eac, (though not by me), and most of them show up in squeezebox no problem. You may think me sad but I have watched the scan taking place and noticed that when it reaches the folders that I know it hasn't scanned it just ignores them completely.( watched for over an hour LOL) I reckon it's meta data, (which I have never tampered with ever). Seems very strange to me. I can completely disconnect the incoming ethernet cable to my router and everything works fine (not online content obviously). I can connect to both LMS on my PC as well as the Touch's own server, browse & play music, Touch doesn't even throw up a single error or warning. modem > *x* router > wifi > touch *x* = disconnected ethernet -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91877 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] New Owner
good luck with the tagging ( aka metadata ) :) It worth the effort to get rigth, if you are in the process of ripping cd's dbpower amp or eac is great tools. If you like it lossles the FLAC formats is whats works with least effort on squeezeboxes. mp3tag tag&rename is also good tools . Regarding missing files are those wav files ripped with wmp ? Btw organise it neatly in /artist/album/track for example , one folder per artist and in that one folder for each album put a cover.jpg or folder.jpg with the album art there ( or embedd it ) don't keep m3u or other strange files in an album. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Are the files not showing all the same format and none of the same format type shows? It's more likely than not that your issue is related to your tags (aka metadata). It would be helpful for us to know where it is that your music's not "showing". Is it not showing in "albums, not showing in "artists", not showing in "music folder"? Does it show in some places and not others"? Do you have a good tagging program such as mp3tag, foobar, etc., that you can use to correct this type of issue? You also might want to have a look over in the ripping/encoding/transoding/tagging forum to familiarize yourself with some of the more common problems. -- rgro Rg System information Main: PS Audio Quintet > Vortexbox > Touch (wired) via optical > Rega DAC > LFD LE IV amp > VA Mozart Grands > REL Acoustics R305. I don't think that it's DNS as much as the Touch's reliance on mysqueezebox.com for items on its menus and for 'Apps' and internet radio. [SlimDevices: Touch] SB Touch requires DNS?
So, yesterday my Internet connection went out... and I found out that my SB Touch would barely function, even though I have a local Squeezebox Server installation. It'd make sense to me that anything Internet wouldn't work, but why would it block the UI with an error about no DNS server when all I want to do is play music locally from my SBS? It was basically out of commission for playing local music until my Internet came back. -- mbg mbg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3200 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91877 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Even then I don't think they have it quite right. I'll bet 90 is simply North America, not just Canada, as many US based retailers carry that model. Or maybe even just point of entry listing. UK showing that model is likely a typo or someone misread the P/N listing or they may well share stock if/when needed, who knows. Important thing is there is no hardware differences and you are getting one sooner than later! For those of you still enthralled by the discussion of the differences between these models, the word from Logitech is as follows: As we understand that you would like to know what is the differences between the Logitech Squeezebox Touch's part numbers. We will be more than happy to help you with this concern. Part number 930-89 Squeezebox Touch EMEA Part number 930-90 Squeezebox Touch CANADA Still does not explain why Amazon UK are offering the 930-90 (at some date in the future), but given PC world current price of approx. £150 I think now is the time to buy one (any one!). -- gbcambridge gbcambridge's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=48676 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91782 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

murrayb;672702 Wrote: > How do you get the server to downsample the higher rate files? I > downloaded a 192/24 flac file by mistake. Is there some way I can get > it to play through the Touch? It does automatically if you haven't fiddled to much withbthe file types settings and have a server that supports it, it has to run the flac and SoX binarie, so it's a bit cpu intense small nas boxes won't cut it. before anyone get's to carried away by comparing lossles with lossles ( yes the output is bit for bit identical, otherwise it won't be lossles ). Have in mind that both flac and alac have replaygain / soundcheck tags and the Squeezebox has a gain function you should disable when comparing. This gain funtion is to make tracks sound qually loud in playlist and as noone likes digital clipping volume adjustment is downwards to a reference level. Practical result if you have gain tags and this function is enabled wav files sound louder than flac in most cases with modern music at least they have different volume. So off with the gain function . make a playlist of the same track in flac and wav repeated several times press shuffle. Try not to sneak peek on the song names on the player ( cover it ) wav files often lack tags and you see in the playlist. Ever tried to critically listen to exact same track 2 times after each other does it sound identical to you , probably not thats how we work. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub.
