 4) Logitech Media Server MUST BE running on the Vortexbox before you can
select the Vortexbox as your music source under the My Music menu on
the Squeezebox. (Logitech Media Server is the brains behind the
Squeezebox - you have to have one running somewhere before you can play
anything on the Touch. Somewhere might be the Vortexbox, another local
PC you've installed LMS on, or MySqueezebox.com global LMS server).
Also, with respect to (4), the Start Logitech Media Server on the SB
Touch menu refers to a stripped down version of LMS (sometimes called
TinyLMS) that can run on the Touch itself. This is only applicable if
you have a USB drive or SD card with your music library connected
directly to the Touch. If you have a Vortexbox running LMS, then you do
_not_ want to run LMS on the Touch as well.

From your questions it seems likely to me that your main problem is more
likely to be not really understanding the system rather than a buggy
setup. You should consider that good news, because it's a lot easier to
fix than a truly buggy installation :-)

To be able see the hidden files in Windows you need to show hidden
files, and uncheck Hide protected operating system files. The screen
shot is from FreeCommander which you can download here:
http://www.freecommander.com/
You need to keep the file named Folder.jpg, this is only 200x200 pixels,
so shouldn't be a problem for TinyLMS (yes, this is the cut down LMS
that runs on the Touch).
You can't scan the USB drive on a PC and transfer the database to the
HDD, a lot of folk would like this feature!

I'm starting to think this whole endeavor was a giant waste of time and
money.

NO MATTER WHAT I DO it never works for more than a day or two.

Some setting always gets off... something always needs to be rebooted...
or, like now, I TRY EVERYTHING and it still doesn't work.

It will play for 10 seconds, then just mysteriously stop playing. It
will start playing, then pause on its own, or say that it's playing but
there's no sound.

Been wrestling with this for MONTHS now, I just want the damn thing to
WORK

As John Swenson stated you should haver one album per folder. There is
no need to have all Grateful Dead albums in one folder, this just adds
another layer for Tiny LMS to work through. As long as the artist
tagging you use is identical for each album they will all show up under
the same name when navigating to what you want to listen to.

The reason why I ask is because previously I had the 75.etc address for

to try to troubleshoot an issue that I am having with my sq Boom

There are probably some advantage of setting your ISP's (or others ) DNS

The advantage of using the router as DNS in all devices is that you only

Try this on the Touch itself .

Go to the settings menu and then advanced and then diagnostics .

here you have ethernet info and server info and wireless info what
do they say ? (some of these menus scroll all info wont fit on one

No problem playing 24/192 files through coax, but USB does not play. I
called W4S and was told the server must connect directly to the DAC. The
W4S DAC comes with a driver disk and, although it seems to install from
the disk, the DAC is not recognized and the drivers do not appear
anywhere on the PC (where did they go?). When I plug the USB in, the W4S
seems to recognize the Touch, as the display shows a sample rate of 48
kHz, which is blank when not connected.

Does the uDAC come with driver disk? Possibly a difference between DAC2
and other W4S DAC's? How did you get the EDO to play in adaptive mode,
as Triode says it won't? And what would be the point if you cannot use
asynch with USB when coax works perfectly fine? Thanks.

And a big THANK YOU to Triode for all the work and attention!

 --Neil
Neil,

I think I should start by explaining my understanding of drivers and
dacs. All dacs need a driver so it can connect and work with the
computer to which it is physically attached in order to play music.
Windows, Mac and Linux all have standard built in drivers. If the
standard driver does not work with a particular dac then a driver can be
written for that particular operating system / dac combination. Most
dacs on the market now work with the current Mac drivers. Very few dacs
work with current Windows drivers but many dac makers provide a driver
that will work. Many dacs work with the standard Linux drivers but I
have not seen any dac maker provide a Linux driver when the dac needs
one. Since the Squeezebox Touch is a Linux computer with standard
drivers a dac will only play music with the USB input if it can work
with the standard Linux drivers. Adding drivers to the server feeding
the SBT will not help.

Since your DAC2 plays music from the server with the coax input we can
limit our driver discussion to the standard Linux drivers on the SBT.
John Swenson said he thought Wyred4Sound uses the M2Tech OEM board which
cannot use the standard Linux drivers and so their dacs will not work
with the SBT. I asked Wyred4Sound if they use the M2Tech OEM board. The
response was that the µDAC, mINT and DAC1 do not use the M2Tech OEM
board. The answer did not list the DAC2. The DAC2 may very well use the
M2Tech OEM board in which case it should not work in either async or
adaptive mode on the USB input. Triode then suggested I as ask
Wyred4Sound if the µDAC would work with standard drivers. The
Wyred4Sound response was The interface does work with Linux driverless
in adaptive mode. It will not work with Linux in async mode.

The µDAC does come with Windows driver which I have used to play music
with J. River and MediaMonkey players. The drivers work fine but that
has nothing to do with the SBT.

Here is how I use the USB input on the µDAC: 1. use EDO, 2. connect the
µDAC directly to the SBT (no USB hub), and 3. use the 9v external power
supply. It automatically uses adaptive mode and plays quite well. As the
µDAC has a 24/96 USB input I should have to use a USB hub with the EDO
to get async. With a hub the SBT cannot see the µDAC. I suspect this
means the the standard Linux driver in the SBT works in adaptive mode
with the µDAC but does not work in async mode with the µDAC. I keep
trying all of Triode's updates in hopes the async problem is really
something else. If the DAC2 has the M2Tech OEM board you should not
expect it to work with the SBT. I would do a test though by connecting
the dac to the USB connector on the SBT and installing the EDO. If the
SBT does not recognize the DAC2 you probably will not be able to get it
to work.

Not working with USB is not really a problem for you. The EDO gives you
24/192 playback on the DAC2 with the coax input. That should be great. I
am using the EDO with coax on the µDAC and am quite happy with what I
hear.

The reason I am interested in the async USB input is that if it worked I
just might prefer it to the coax input. This is not likely with the µDAC
and its ESS Sabre chip but the tinkerer in me would like to know. Once
Triode stops changing the EDO I expect I will just use coax input and
forget about using the USB input on the µDAC. I bought the µDAC to use
with MOG on the SBT and the total package is a delight.

plugged and unplugged it several times. Network Health is excellent.

downsampled by the server. Does kernal 5 alter this DIV2 setting to
divide the clocks by 2? If so, that may be the problem. My reading of
this section is that DIV2 should be set to 0.

It defaults to and is set to 1 for all cases - kernel #5 should have set
it to 0 for the 192k case but it doesn't seem to work. I need to look
at this again.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Can Touch play .aiff 24bit files natively and not transcoded to flac?

2012-05-05 Thread Fluid

Playing 24 bit aif files natively is it possible
Hi recent convert to Touch and loving it but have a couple of questions
for the experts here please

My music is stored on a MacBook (intel core 2 ) and running squeezbox
server

All my music about 14000 files is in .aiff file format and includes 24
bit upto 192 with lots of 88 and 96

My squeezbox server seems to be transcoding these to flac before sending
em to the touch

Is there a way to make the server send them natively

I use my touch both digital out and analogue output into my Arcan AVR
which has wolfsen dacs capable of 24/192 so don't mind doing it either
way

I was always told its best to not transcode and keep the process of
sending the digital information as simple as possible

Can the touch handle these files natively and is there a way to make it
happen

All help and advice welcome and please remember this is all new to me
but I have some experience with my Linn DS which does do 24/192 natively

Cheers

What happens if you leave it at 1 for 192K?
