Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Announce: Enhanced Digital Output app - USB Dac and 192k Digital Ouput

2012-12-04 Thread agentsmith

Firstly I just rejoined squeeze brigade after a 2 years hiatus by buying
back a last of breed brand new Touch. First thing I did is tried out
this fantastic upgrade and it worked the first time, amazing!

I do have one question about sharing my dCS USB input between the Touch
and a Mac Mini. Is there a sort of switch that can switch between the 2
devices without too much compromise to the sound!

I plan to use the mini for DSD playback and the Touch for the rest

Thx

The surprise is that the AntiMode Dual Core's sound through the SPDIF
connection seems significantly improved. What I hear is increased
clarity, better delineation of instruments and voices, truer timbres, in
short a more realistic musical presentation. What was already excellent
sound quality has been enhanced, at least as heard through my system.

Now it has Dec 2 R2 to solve all these issues, so worth trying again.

[SlimDevices: Touch] LMS on Ubuntu 12.04 cannot downsample 24/192

2012-12-04 Thread Fukinagashi

Hi all. I've recently upgraded my OS to Ubuntu 12.04 and installed again
LMS.
From that time LMS seems not to recognize 24/192 flac files anymore and
to automatically downsample them to 24/96.
Any suggestion?

2012-12-04 Thread Mnyb

Did you install the 64 bit version, you migth need the ia32-libs
installed , LMS is mostly 32 bit and some of the helper apps like sox
and flac are compiled for 32 bit .

Search the forum ( there is another recent tread i cant find ) there are
also some successfully attempts to compile 64 bit versions with the LMS
patches instead of installing the 32 bit compatibility packages for
everything

Thanks.

Last night everything seemed fine, but today when I launched iPend it
could not find my Touch. Also, it no longer lists my iPad as a player.
I turned on the touch at the touch's screen and iPeng then found it, but
it still doesn't show the iPad as a player.

What am I doing wrong?

2012-12-04 Thread pippin

What do you use as a server? I suspect that your server was down so the
Touch was left unconnected (and iPeng, too).
When you turned the touch back on, it then probably automatically
connected to MySqueezebox.com making it remotely controllable again.
When you do this and the touch was your selected player in iPeng, iPeng
will follow the Touch to MySqueezebox.com so you can still use it (you
should be able to see this in iPeng's player list, the active server is
shown at the top) but iPeng's player doesn't work there, Logitech
doesn't allow that, you need your own server to use iPeng's player.

I'm a little confused about your server question. Are talking about
what's on the Touch (Tiny LMS?) or the LMS that's loaded on my laptop
(that's where my music files are stored)?

My laptop was off when I started iPeng this evening since I just wanted
to listen to Internet radio. I just turned it on and now I see both the
Touch and my iPad listed as available players.

So are you saying that LMS on my laptop must be up and running to use
iPeng's player function?

What about getting iPeng to see the Touch when I first launch iPeng?

Sorry for my newly questions. My knowledge of how all this works is
limited... ;)

I don't know. This depends on where you want to play music from.
How the Squeezeboxes work, you can only play music from the server you
are connected to, so in this case I probably talk about the LMS on your
 laptop.
The TinyLMS on your Touch will only run if you connect a USB drive or
 an SD card.

The problem with this is that if your touch was connected to your laptop
before, then this will leave it in an unconnected state, meaning you
 can't remotely control it.
Starting from that, my last post probably applies.

 Yes.

I don't understand what you mean by that?

I see, so LMS on my laptop has to be running to us iPeng's player
feature.

When I first launched iPeng this evening, I couldn't see the Touch under
the Multiplayer Control at all. Based on your earlier post, I figured
this was because the Touch was last connected to LMS when I shut
everything down.

However, I did some experimenting since your above post and discovered
that even if I shut everything down (iPeng, LMS, Touch) after the Touch
being last connected to LMS, when I launch iPeng (leaving LMS off) I can
see the Touch as an unconnected player. From there I can tell iPeng
to connect to the Touch and then listen to internet radio through my
stereo. So it seems I can listen to internet radio without having to
run LMS. This wasn't possible when I first started iPeng this evening
when it wouldn't show any players, connected or unconnected. As I
mentioned, I had to turn the Touch on first before iPeng could see it
and list it under Multiplayer Control.

So I'm wonder what is suppose to be normal behavior when I first
launch iPeng?

I'm hope I'm making sense here. :o

Yes, you connect it to MySqueezebox.com then.
This, however, is not perfectly reliable. The Touch will not always
realize that it lost it's server connection and then not show up as
unconnected.

If you use MySqueezebox.com as a music source: yes.

The normal behavior depends on the state of your Touch.
iPeng will do three things

- search for LMS servers. For all that it finds, it looks for
connected Squeezeboxes and shows them. If one of them is the one you
used the last time (here: your touch), it will make that server the
one it uses as a music source so that you can use that player
- connect to MySqueezebox.com (if you have configured that with your
mail/password by tapping it at least once). Process is the same as for
  LMS
- Search for unconnected players and show them

If iPeng doesn't find the server it was last connected to and also
doesn't find the Squeezebox on another server, it does nothing.

Saturn94: I'd recommend trying to think of a way to serve your use-cases
while minimizing server-switching. Switching servers, as you're
finding, often leads to a less-than-optimal experience. Usually there
are settings differences between your servers which potentially leads to
differing behaviors and menus, your local music is only available when
you're on LMS, and the actual switchover doesn't always happen very
seamlessly (as you can see).

Do you have a computer you could dedicate to running LMS all the time?
Barring that, could you use TinyLMS?

 1. Where is the best source for a comprehensive list of support
documents, FAQs, Downloads, betas, list of plugins, manuals etc...? I
tried the Wiki and the info seems pretty thin and not updated.

For plugins, the only updated list is the Plugins tab in LMS Settings
page, just be sure to enable the checkbox so it shows all plugins and
not just the recommended ones which is the default.
There are plugin documentations on the wiki for individual plugins which
are fairly updated (for example mine) but the plugin lists on the wiki
is no longer updated so it's better to start looking in the Plugins
tab of LMS. On the Touch you also have the possibility to install third
party applets directly on the Touch, these are found in the
Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer menu directly on the Touch, they also
have a checkbox to show all applets by default it only shows recommended
applets.

For support documents/FAQ's, what we have is the unofficial information
on the wiki and the official information at
http://support.logitech.com/, I think this also have references to user
manuals.

 2. After so many years of accumulation, my music library is getting
quite bloated with tens of thousands of tracks, most tracks were
converted to ALAC when I switched platforms, but some FLACs as well.
The initial scan took hours but after it is done I noticed that access
is so slow the Touch constantly times out trying to connect to the
 (Macboook Pro) LMS server.

Would using iTunes integration solve this problem? (I noticed that
iTunes seems quite happy with a crazy size library without much speed
 penalty.)

I don't think iTunes integration helps.
Are you running any third party plugins that might execute stuff in the
background causing problem ?
Feels strange that a Macbook Pro should have any performance issues
unless you have hundred thousands tracks or something similar.
There is some settings in LMS Settings/Advanced/Performance regarding
Database Memory Config and Server Priority which you could try to
experiment with to see if they make any difference.
Do you have a good network connection between the Macbook Pro and the
Touch ? If not, that could possibly explain some performance issues.

agentsmith wrote:

 3. Since I have FLAC files as well, can the server be configured to
support both iTunes and LMS native for FLAC files?

iTunes doesn't support FLAC, you can ask Apple for it but so far they
have refused to answer any requests in this direction.
Converting the FLAC's to ALAC is probably the only way you would be able
to make your whole library work in both iTunes and LMS.

I think LMS should scan both FLAC and ALAC files as long as you have
entered the music folder in LMS Settings, possibly you might have to
disable the iTunes integration but if I remember correctly it shouldn't
be necessary and it should work as long as you have a Music Folder
configured in LMS.
