Thanks for your help, John. As far as I can tell, the server remains active when the drive sleeps. I waited for a couple of hours and checked the drive, which wasn't making any noise or vibration, although the status light was lit. On the Touch, I checked the Squeezebox Server option (it wasn't under USB on my system, but a separate option on the Advanced menu) and saw the results of the latest scan along with the option to stop the server. I guess that means that the server is still running. I didn't see any other options for checking the server status. Yes, I always wait for the scan to finish before I try to play music or do anything else. As for the ALAC problems, I searched the forum and saw a thread about fixing the issue with the Touch not recognizing those files, but not a solution for the cut-off problem. I hope somebody will let me know if I'm missing something. Otherwise, I guess I'll just see what happens with 7.6. Yes, the FLAC files are 24/96. I downloaded them from HDTracks, and I don't know what compression setting they used. I'm willing to re-compress them at a low setting. I don't have a program for that on my Mac, but I'm sure there's one out there. I'd appreciate any suggestions that you or others might have. I'm assuming that the other questions you asked (artwork, library size, etc) had to do with 16/44 FLAC files, which I'm not using. Let me know if these other issues are relevant and I'll report as much info as I can find. The FLAC files are 24/96. I purchased them from HD Tracks and I'm not sure what compression setting they used. Some of my ALAC files were FLAC files before I transcoded them on moving to the Mac world. I don't remember what compression setting I used for the original FLACs. It was the default on dBPoweramp, whatever that was. However, a bunch of my ALAC files were ripped using iTunes and they have problems too. The Toshiba hard drive is only about a quarter full, so I don't think that's the problem. I'm using the same Toshiba 640GB drive, but TinySC doesn't work at all with it on my system. As I've described elsewhere, ALAC files get cut off or go into loops. FLAC files stop and rebuffer. This is both with 7.5 and the 7.6 beta. [SlimDevices: Touch] 7.6 experiences
I downloaded 7.6 and updated the firmware on my Touch. The Touch re-scanned the files on the external USB hard drive. Unfortunately, I'm still getting all the problems I had with 7.5: FLAC files play for a few seconds and then the Touch stops to rebuffer. ALAC files play for about 30 seconds and then restart in a loop. (This is a different error than I had with ALAC files in 7.5. Previously, the Touch would cut off the last few seconds of a track.) The internal server plays files listed from the "artist" tag but not the "album artist" tag. In my case, the problem occurs with the Touch's onboard server. I haven't used the server over wifi much, but I'll try to get some testing in over the weekend. If the problem is due to encoding, I'm not sure what I can do to fix it. As I said, most of my music is in Apple Lossless encoded using iTunes, which doesn't have any options for that codec. Thanks, Mitch. It does seem like the Touch has some difficulties with ALAC files. I can work around the bugs so far. Hi, Toby. The Favorites menu on my Touch server doesn't have an option for MySqueezebox.com. I tried adding a radio station URL to the Favorites list on the MySqueezebox web page, but it doesn't show up on the Touch server or the server on my Mac. The Touch Now Playing screen has an option to save to the Library but not the Favorites. Forgive me if this is obvious, but is there any way to add an item to the Favorites list on the Touch? SBS on the host computer has various options, like the heart button for individual tracks and the "New Favorite" button in the Favorites list, but I don't see anything for the Touch internal server. I'd really like to add a URL for the KEXP live stream. (Aside: does anybody know if it's possible to play the KEXP uncompressed stream on the Touch?) Second: After playing back some tracks from the music library on an external USB hard drive, I've noticed that the Touch seems to use "gapless playback" so that one track starts right after another with no dead air. I don't recall this happening with earlier Squeezebox models. Is there a way to defeat this feature? Here are a couple of issues that have arisen in two days of playing with the Touch. I have my Touch connected to an external hard drive via USB. I'm also running SBS on my Mac with OS X Snow Leopard. I have identical libraries on the Mac and the USB drive on the Touch. Most of the files are in Apple Lossless (ALAC) format. The first issue has to do with accessing files via multiple entries in the artist list. The list shows names from both the Artist and Album Artist tag. For example, tracks on a classical album might have "JS Bach" in the Artist field and "Yo-Yo Ma" in the Album Artist field. The album shows up in the artist list twice, once for Bach and once for Yo-Yo. If I try to select a track from this album on the external USB drive from the Yo-Yo Ma entry on the artist list, I get a spinning icon and no music. However, if I select the same item from the Bach entry, the track plays. That's on the external USB drive. If I switch libraries so that the Touch accesses the files on my Mac over wi-fi, the problem goes away. I can access the track through Bach or Yo-Yo. The second issue is also related to tagging. The internal Touch server seems to throw a bunch of tags into the Artist list. Not just Album Artist--which I see on my Mac too--but the WRT tag on ALAC files too. I don't see those on the Mac. For instance, I've got a bunch of Velvet Underground albums. I ripped them using iTunes and they've all got "Lou Reed" in the WRT tag. When I run SBS on my Mac and click Lou Reed, I just see his solo albums. However, on the Touch with the external USB drive, clicking Lou Reed shows his solo records and all the albums with the Velvets. If I select one of these Velvet tracks, I get the spinning icon and no music as described above. However, I can access the music via the artist entry for Velvet Underground. It really would be nice if the two versions of the server were more consistent. Someone on the tagging forum said that there's no way to turn off display of Album Artist tags in Apple Lossless files. Regarding the Bach problem, I looked at the tags in iTunes (the only tagging program I have on the Mac). It doesn't have an "artistsort" but there was a "Sort Artist." I didn't see any Bach tags for Sort Artist. I'll repost the other question in the tagging forum. Well, my Touch is up and running nicely. I have a couple of questions about the music library display in the server software. I'm running a Mac with Snow Leopard. I have a bunch of CDs that I ripped into Apple Lossless using iTunes. It's a mix of genres with a lot of classical. The tagging format I chose for the classical albums was to put the composer in the artist field and the performer in the album artist field. When I scanned the library for the Touch, the artist list displays each album twice, once by artist and once by album artist. I really don't want the album artist to appear in that list. I've tried both settings of the TPE2 tag option, but that doesn't make any difference. I tried turning off the "use iTunes" option but that doesn't help either. Can anybody offer any suggestions? Also, in my list of artists, composers all show up alphabetized by first names, i.e., Igor Stravinsky shows up under the "I" listings. That's okay, I guess, with one exception: Johann Sebastian Bach shows up under "B." I checked the tags for all the Bach albums and they all have the correct form of the name with first name first. Does anyone know what's going on here? The Touch status on Amazon switches back and forth between "available April 19th" and "unavailable." I cancelled my preorder from Amazon and ordered the Touch from the Logitech site yesterday when the item status changed to "in stock." An hour or so after my order, the Logitech site said "out of stock." I called them and they said that they don't have any and they're waiting for a new shipment. Their site now says "in stock" again. I checked the status of my order and it said "no orders found."
