Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch - in stock anytime soon?

2010-09-30 Thread MickeyG

I've seen the Out of Stock message too. I didn't know what was going
on, so I asked various people within Logitech.

We are indeed out of stock, but will have more within the next few
days. Our September shipment of Touch players for the United States was
supposed to arrive from the factory earlier this month but has been
delayed. They're now on an airplane and should be entering the United
States today (September 30, 2010).

Hopefully they'll be sending out all backordered units to customers
sometime next week.

In the meantime, if you want one you should place an order now and
they'll ship it out soon.

Sorry for the confusion.

You've unfortunately encountered 3 basic issues with our character
handling. Here's our plan for them. We'll not be able to address them
immediately, however:

- *Bugs in handling mixed Latin and non-Latin characters*. Mixing
German and Korean doesn't work very well. We've fixed individual bugs
regarding this in the past, but what's really needed is a complete
re-do of the software handling this. We're planning on tackling this
for our next major software release.
- *No support of Asian character sets on Touch, Duet, and Radio*: Our
open source fonts don't support Asian characters yet. We'll review
switching to one that does, but this may not happen immediately.
- *Different characters supported on Boom and Classic*: Switching to
a more complete open source font set per #2 above will unify our
  support.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Recurring problems

2010-08-06 Thread MickeyG

Craig:

Those error messages can appear when your USB hard drive shuts down and
the Touch can't read or write from it. They are common when using a
USB-powered hard drive with Touch. In this case, the hard drive
attempts to consume more current than the Touch can supply. When that
current isn't available, the hard drive will typically turn itself off.
This is usually accompanied by some clicking noises from the hard
drive.

Maybe that's what you're seeing. Or maybe not. The wiki specifies using
only AC-adapter powered USB hard drives:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox_Touch_as_a_Home_Music_Server

Can you describe your USB setup? Hard drive manufacturer, model number,
etc.

Could you also provide the number of tracks in your library? That can
sometimes be helpful in the diagnosis too.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Music Folder empty problem

2010-07-01 Thread MickeyG

How did you connect the internal WD drive to the Touch? Was it a SATA
drive or an older PATA drive? Did you use a USB-SATA or USB-PATA
converter? If so, which brand? I've used a USB-PATA converter, and that
worked OK but was super slow, especially with a 4200 rpm drive.

OTOH, using an internal WD drive means you may not have powered the
drive with an AC adapter. In my testing, not using an AC adapter will
cause the drive to spin up/spin down intermittently. -This appears to
the Touch software as if you're unplugging and replugging the drive in
and out of the USB connector. -

I've seen some postings on the forums say that not using an external AC
power adapter is OK, but we've received a lot of customer support calls
from people who do this and then wonder why it doesn't work. *An
external power adapter or supply is mandatory for USB hard drives
plugged into the Squeezebox Touch. *

So, the root of your issues with the internal WD drive could be:

1. Funky USB to drive converter, and/or
2. No AC adapter on your internal WD hard drive.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch and USB Flash Drive

2010-06-30 Thread MickeyG

Can you be more specific about your steps and what precisely you see on
the screen? This should work, and it would help if you could provide
more details.

Also, could you list the manufacturer and model of USB drive? It would
be helpful if you listed the contents of the USB drive also -- how many
tracks, the type of tracks (MP3? AAC? FLAC?)

However, I know from personal experience that if you want to remove a
USB flash drive regularly from a Touch, you'll need to carefully follow
the right procedure (i.e., follow the Touch menus for USB drive to
remove it) -every time-. I've done my share of yanking out that USB
drive (flash or hard drive) incorrectly. When I do that, I've noticed
that -sometimes- the drive will no longer be recognized by Touch unless
you run something like the XP Error-checking tool.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

After I run it, my drive will be recognized again ... or until I make a
mistake again.

Could you try running that tool (or something similar) and then trying
it again with a Touch?

But seriously ... a lot of USB drives don't have the USB certified

only resembles USB but aren't USB certified) These drives appear to be
much more likely to exceed USB specs when spinning up. I have tested a
lot of drives like that, and when that happens the drive goes into a
constant spin-up/spin-down cycle. The only way to solve that is to
supply more current, since Touch will only supply what's specified by
USB.

I was worried that a lot of users would have throw on a old drive and
possibly run into this situation too.
