Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Switching to the linear power supply

Many audiophile components have switching supplies, it's not b/c they
are being cheap or b/c it is an inferior technology. Like all things
audio, it's not the technology, it's the implementation. There are
crummy linear supplies, and good switching supplies.

The question is - how good is the one that comes with the Touch? Mine
seems to occasionally 'buzz'. I suspect it's related to the power
coming in to my home. After reading about linear power supplies, I
bought one. While I can't say for certain that it sounds dramatically
better (although I think there is an improvement in quieter
backgrounds), I can say that it doesn't 'buzz'.

Anyone else experience a buzzing from the supplied wall-wart that comes
with the Touch?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Standalone with HDD Which File Format?

2010-06-22 Thread mdconnelly

I have 1300 albums in flac + album art on a 500g Lacie USB drive
attached to my Touch. The Lacie has it's own power. It just works.

The only time I've run into buffering issues is in playback of 24/96
hi-res files. Interestingly, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't
so I'm not sure what the issue is. I haven't tried yet to recompress
those flac files from -5 to a lower number to see if that would make a
difference.

Ah! I wasn't aware of that and that could very well have been the
problem I was running in to since they were flacs that I downloaded
from the a couple online hi-res sites. I'll take a closer look when I
get home tonight.

I agree that flacs at -5 are a good compromise and going to -8 may very
well create more issues than benefits.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Standalone with HDD Which File Format?

2010-06-22 Thread mdconnelly

My advice is to keep things simple. Managing a NAS has it's own
headaches and a collection of 800 CDs is probably only going to take
about 300+ gig in flac, so no real need for a NAS I wouldn't think.
But do be sure to by a spare drive to backup your the hard disk.

Depending upon your setup, you may find that running SqueezeCenter and
feeding the Touch via wired or wireless from your LAN might be just as
good as running TinySC. There are a few benefits from doing so such as
browser access to SqueezeCenter and some of the plugins, but it does
require you to keep you computer running SqueezeCenter up all the time.
Not such a bad thing.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Sales or discounts?

2010-04-14 Thread mdconnelly

What I will say about Logitech (although the credit should go to the
Slimdevices team), is that our worst fears did not occur. Rather than
taking the Squeezebox line down a low-price/low-quality commodity path
as many feared, instead they significantly expanded the Squeezebox
lineup with high quality, complementary products such as the Boom and
Radio and then came out with the Touch which is a substantial
improvement over the Duet and SB3 in all aspects.

Were mistakes made along the way? Sure. But I for one am a very happy
Squeezebox customer and the Touch was definitely worth the wait.

Can't wait to see what's next!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How well does the Touch work?

2010-04-13 Thread mdconnelly

Interesting! I received my Touch last night and within 5 minutes had it
playing. It took me longer to get it out of the box than to get it
playing music!

The first thing I did was plug the Touch into my Oracle DAC1000 right
next to my Duet, synced the Touch with the Duet, level-matched them and
then proceeded to listen to a few of my favorite albums, occasionally
switching between Touch and Duet.

The switch was so seamless that frequently I thought it did not
actually switch. After perhaps an hour or so of listening I did begin
to hear subtle differences with the Touch being a wee bit more relaxed,
refined and defined. I do wonder if the Touch needs 'breakin' time...
anyone with experience on that?

I have not YET attempted to compare via the Touch analog outs but will
certainly do that at some point. I will say that running the Duet
digital out thru my DAC was dramatically better than the Duet analog
outs.

Overall, I am one very happy Touch owner. My Duet will soon be demoted
to kitchen duty.

 the price. ;-)

But what about the Touch Lavry compared to the Touch with analog out?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Audio Engine AW1

2010-02-08 Thread mdconnelly

I've not used the AW1 but am quite familiar with the AudioEngine
speakers. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work with any
Squeezebox including the Touch via the RCA output jacks or the headphone
jack.

But, the AW1 is also designed so that it can transmit directly from a
computer via the AW1 USB dongle. The USB port on the Touch is designed
as an input device so I doubt if it would work to transmit the same way
a computer would. But, of course, the other AW1 USB dongle can be
inserted directly into your A5s. Seems like that would be a great
setup and extremely portable. I have no idea how good the wireless
sounds compared to running wire.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Future Touch owners - how do you plan to use the embedded SqueezeboxServer?

Question: Using the Touch's embedded SBS...

- I plan to use it as my main server/library
- I plan to use it occasionally, such as when a friend brings around
  a USB drive
- I have no interest it using it at all really

I'll definitely give it a try and see what I'm missing... I would like
to eliminate my 24x7 computer if I can and just put a 1tb drive
connected to the Touch.

If you're vested in Squeezeboxen, then the HP DreamScreen (or many of
the Netbooks or an IPod for that matter) make a great alternative to the
Squeezebox Controller, but hardly a Touch replacement.

Touch screen itself? That is, no WebUI, no Controller, no iPhone app,

Ah! Thanks for the info. Makes sense. So in a household of several
SBs, Duets and a Touch in mini SC mode, control would only be possible
from SB remotes, a Controller or iPeng on the iPhone. There wouldn't be
a way to configure anything or select music via a laptop?
