I have 1300 albums in flac + album art on a 500g Lacie USB drive attached to my Touch. The Lacie has it's own power. It just works.
The only time I've run into buffering issues is in playback of 24/96 hi-res files. Interestingly, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't so I'm not sure what the issue is.
