That's the only concern ,but if you done it the right way everything is
on the same network ,not separate networks connected to each other .
Multiple devices can still make "one network" thats just depends on how
the stuff is setup

I hear you; I have a second "backup" drive; as I rip to my main library
drive I copy the files to my backup drive.

Once I've gotten most of my CDs ripped, I may even opt for a third
backup drive. Given that the cost of a drive is roughly equal to the
cost of 10 to 30 CDs, backup drives are cheap compared to the investment
in my c. 2000 CDs, and the time spent ripping them.

Having such ready access to my digital music collection (not to mention
Internet streams) is quite an amazing experience; it makes me think of
the "visions of the future" from World's Fairs of decades past, or from
"The Jetsons"!

Just a warning: have a backup plan and USE IT!!! You don't want to have
to rip all your CDs again. Unfortunately I learned the hard way and it
was not fun. So please backup your music library. And good luck with new
set up, may you enjoy lots of music for many years to come.

This is the only thing that concerns me. The router usually would not be
'between' your PC and the rest of your network. Generally, you would
have your internet link coming into either a DSL or cable modem, then
immediately behind that is your router. Then behind the router would be
PCs, Squeezeboxes, iPads, printers, what have you. The important thing
with Squeezeboxes and LMS is that the computer running LMS and all of
your Squeezeboxes all need to be on the same network (subnet). For
instance, they all would have addresses in the 192.168.1.x block. This
is so that the LMS server and Squeezeboxes can automatically see each
other.

Yes.

Yes. You can 'synchronize' the two players and they will play the same
music. Playing the song on either one will play the music on both.

Yes. When the players are not synched, they can play independently. They
can play different tracks served by LMS, or internet streams, or any
combination. LMS has no problem serving music to several different
players simultaneously.

Either way. There's no pro/con one way or the other. It's just two
different ways of using the system.

I recommend not using the built-in server of the Touch. Running LMS on a
PC on your network works infinitely better.

yes, the main benefit of the SB ecosystem is to have a multiroom audio
system. You can have a single PC/NAS, etc. holding your music library
and running LMS (you do NOT need a second copy of LMS or your music).
This is connected to your Router. Then you can have many other SB
players (Touch, radio, boom, transporter, SB3, etc.) also connected back
to the same Router (either through WIFI or ethernet). Then for each of
these SB players you can play DIFFERENT things (different song on each
player) or you can synch one or more players together to play exactly
the same thing. This all works whether you are talking about your own
music, internet radio, music services (pandora, etc.)

For example, in my case, I have a single server running LMS with all my
music. And I have 4 different SB music players connected to my network
(i.e., back to the same router). On these players I can play
independent things or the same thing (i can have one SB playing one
album, another SB playing a different album, my wife can be listening to
internet radio from another SB, and someone in the bedroom can be
listening to Pandora. All at the same time. And I can control any of
the players via an app on my smart phone, tablet, or from my laptop on
the same network. All very simple and how this is designed to work.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Multiple SBTs, One Library, One Network?

2013-02-08 Thread jeromeharris

So far, I've been using my Touch in one room of my apartment, connected
to a pair of small powered speakers (and Ethernet-cabled to a small
fanless PC running LMS; a cheap wireless router is cabled between them,
acting as a sort of "bridge" by supplying the necessary DNS addressing),
to play music that I've ripped to a hard drive and, occasionally, to
listen to Internet streams. I intend to move this gear to the living
room and connect it to my main hi-fi system once I have ripped the bulk
of my 2000 CDs to my library drive.

It occurs to me that, once I've moved things to the living room, it
would be neat to be able to also access my library tracks and Internet
streams in our bedroom. So, my questions (pardon me for not having
searched through past forum posts to see if these have been already
discussed):

-- If I had a second Touch, wouldn't it be possible to connect it via
WiFi to my music system's wireless router (right now, since I've been
using it only via Ethernet cables I have its WiFi function turned off,
but that would be easy to switch back on), and have it play tracks from
my library drive?;

-- If I did that, and if both Touches were turned on at the same time,
would they only be able to play the same track (that's my guess), or
would it be possible to have them each access the library separately and
play different tracks simultaneously (for that to be possible, wouldn't
the second Touch have to run a second copy of LMS that has scanned the
library drive: either its internal "TinyLMS" or an instance of LMS on
another micro-PC)?;

-- Even if playing separate simultaneous tracks is not possible,
shouldn't two Touches on the same WiFi network be able to play separate
Internet streams at the same time (via mysb.com)--or could one Touch
play Internet streams while the other is playing hard-drive tracks?;

-- Just for my understanding: must two Touches on the same network be
set up in a master and slave relationship, or can they operate as
completely independent devices? Are there any benefits and drawbacks to
each of those configurations?

Being able to have one Touch act as an Internet radio in one room while
the other is playing library tracks would give me sufficient reason to
find a second Touch; being able to have each of them access separate
library tracks at the same time (making a "multi-zone" music system, as
it were) would be sort of a "killer app" for me, if the second Touch and
necessary ancillary gear is not too costly.
