[SlimDevices: Touch] Music collection scanning question - can scanning be disabled?
Hi everybody, I will get my SB Touch later today. I got scared reading about problems with external USB drives and large music collections. Many people reported problems with long scans that never finish because of server running out of memory, crashing/ending with some cryptic messages. I have all my files organized in folders by artist's/band's/albums names. I prefer to access my music just by browsing the music folder. I do not use tags inside the files and I do not need album artwork on that tiny screen. Can I disable tags and artwork scanning in some advanced options section? Can I completely disable all scanning? Simple folder browsing is all that I need. Thanks in advance! -- Kuja Kuja's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32935 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79328 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I'd recommend you start off with some of your music on a USB stick or an SD card before jumping into the attached hard drive. My reasons are purely functional. Get the feel of how the Touch works and especially how it sounds. You can always move on to the HDD later. Setup is easy and you wont be disappointed ... just so you don't get frustrated at an early stage. I really don't know if you can turn off the scanning function. -- carib carib's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34240 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79328 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Thanks for the fast answer! I'm a long time SB3 user - I have the original Slimdevices version, not Logitech. I believe that I don't have to experience the SB experience first. :) Main selling point for me was support for external USB drives, so that PC is not needed anymore for simple FLAC playback. I would like to be able to use my external USB drive, as it is advertised in Logitech promo materials, without problems and restrictios that were not mentioned in their promos. This would make me think twice before ordering it. And yes, I would like to have on my USB HDD more than 10 or 20 albums... :D I don't need Facebook on it. :) So if it is not there, I vote for option for disabling tags and artwork scanning in next firmware/software version! . -- Kuja Kuja's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32935 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79328 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I can scan 8,000 tracks in 20-30 minutes without a problem. -- Tony T Tony #63743; SBTouch #9834; SBRadio #9836; Tony T's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34544 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79328 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Kuja;552191 Wrote: I don't see why... besides browsing by genre, year, etc, it can simply browse the music folders. May some hack/patch/code could be made by someone? Something like this patch for fixing the volume at 100%: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77837 Its WAY WAY WAY more complex than that. There are hundreds (probably thousands) of places in the code that access the database. If its not there they are going to crash. It HAS to be there. What is theoretically possible is a small database which only has say 1 song in it. As new songs are pointed at by the folder approach they get added to the database (even if you use folder, accesses to the database still happen). Unfortunately even this is not easy. I've been trying to hack something together for a couple weeks and have been constantly running into roadblocks at every turn. The system was just not designed to do this. The dependence on the database is so pervasive that any attempt at limiting it is turning out to be very difficult. Kuja;552195 Wrote: I had problems with 7.5 It would freeze on scanning music files, so I had to downgrade to older version. If your present server couldn't scan your files with 7.5 there's not much chance that the server in the Touch would work. Before even considering using the Touch server I would install 7.5 on your current hardware and use the logs to figure out why it fails. Probably some file name and/or tagging issue. -- alfista alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79328 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
