CVE-2018-7169

An issue was discovered in shadow 4.5. newgidmap (in shadow-utils) is setuid and
allows an unprivileged user to be placed in a user namespace where setgroups(2)
is permitted. This allows an attacker to remove themselves from a supplementary
group, which may allow access to certain filesystem paths if the administrator
has used "group blacklisting" (e.g., chmod g-rwx) to restrict access to paths.
This flaw effectively reverts a security feature in the kernel (in particular,
the /proc/self/setgroups knob) to prevent this sort of privilege escalation.

unprivileged user can drop supplementary groups

Status in shadow package in openSUSE:

Bug description:
  Distribution: Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
  Kernel: 4.4.0-97-generic
  uidmap package version: 1:4.2-3.1ubuntu5.3

The newgidmap setuid executable allows any user to write a single
mapping line to the gid_map of a process whose identity is the same as
the calling process, as long as that mapping line maps the process's
own GID outside of the user namespace to GID 0 inside the user
  namespace.

Newgidmap will write the mapping regardless of the content of
  /proc/$process_being_mapped/setgroups, which will initially contain
the string "allow". After this mapping is performed, and also after
the process' uid_map is written with newuidmap, the process in the
user namespace will be able to use the setgroups system call to drop
  supplementary groups.

This is possible even if there is no entry for the user in
/etc/subgid, because no subordinate GIDs are actually being used.

This allows any user to circumvent the use of supplementary groups as
blacklists, e.g. for some file owned by root:blacklist with permission
bits 0604 (octal). Normally any process whose identity included the
group "blacklist" in its supplementary groups would not be able to
read that file. By performing this exploit using newgidmap, they can
drop all supplementary groups and read that file.

If newgidmap was not available, unprivileged users would not be able
to write a process's gid_map until writing "deny" to
/proc/$pid/setgroups. A fix for this might be for newgidmap to check
the content of /proc/$process_being_mapped/setgroups is "deny", but we
have not tried to patch this ourselves.

An example using 2 login shells for a user named "someone" on Ubuntu
Xenial, with the uidmap package installed:

  Shell 1

  someone@ubuntu-xenial:~$ id
  uid=1001(someone) gid=1001(someone) groups=1001(someone),1002(restricted)

  someone@ubuntu-xenial:~$ ls -al /tmp/should_restrict
  -rwr-- 1 root restricted 8 Nov 1 12:23 /tmp/should_restrict

  someone@ubuntu-xenial:~$ cat /tmp/should_restrict
  cat: /tmp/should_restrict: Permi

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1748709] Re: Upgrade from xenial to bionic wants to replace moduli

2018-02-18 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Thanks Seth for securities POV on this and essentially confirming what I
assumed.

That said, I think the bug is for now "incomplete" in the sense of breaking the
initial report into two things:
A) I see this on upgrade on one machine, which is unexpected.
B) If this file is generated by each machine, why would we ship a default?

B - is solved - it is not generated and we want to ship a default as we
do right now.

A - is incomplete - as it is not clear yet why you have got the
"Modified (by you or by a script) since installation"

Note: I test upgraded xenial to bionic and got a no notification upgrade
from 0075fd4b72a421f909af9809d0dd3bdc to
fe5be9e1b2ad5c55132a3521ecaadcdd

So I repeat my question to @Mark:
1. I'd assume you had not changed your file - if you had modified it then all
is correct.
   Had you modified it?
2. If you have not modified it there are two options:
2.1. someone/something tampered with your moduli
2.2 Or we have a bug somewhere in the generic upgrade paths misdetecting old
content as unchanged.

If there still is a /etc/ssh/moduli.dpkg-old version of it what is the
checksum (Xenial was 0075fd4b72a421f909af9809d0dd3bdc)?

D : show the differences between the versions
Z : start a shell to examine the situation

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1750306] [NEW] The LibreOffice 5.4.4.2 don't work

2018-02-18 Thread Rosalvo
Public bug reported:

I had a problem with the version 5.4.4.2 of LibreOffice that came with
the installation of Kubuntu 18.04. Anyone work in writer can be saved. A
error message pop up came in this moment. As a layman I went to the most
radical solution: I removed LibreOffice via Discover and downloaded
LibreOffice 6.0.1 from this address: https://en.libreoffice.org/baixe-
ja/?... = en-GB. I unpacked it, got into the DEB subfolder, gave dpkg -i
* .deb. Once installed, I came across a beautiful LibreOffice 6.0.1,
working wonderfully well.

I write only to suggest replacing LibreOffice with a newer version, or
even the version that solved my problem, 6.0.1, because there are more
people complaining about version 5.4.4.2, because of the same problem,
in AskLibO. Thank You

Title:
  The LibreOffice 5.4.4.2 don't work

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I had a problem with the version 5.4.4.2 of LibreOffice that came with
the installation of Kubuntu 18.04. Anyone work in writer can be saved.
A error message pop up came in this moment. As a layman I went to the
most radical solution: I removed LibreOffice via Discover and
downloaded LibreOffice 6.0.1 from this address:
  https://en.libreoffice.org/baixe-ja/?... = en-GB. I unpacked it, got
into the DEB subfolder, gave dpkg -i * .deb. Once installed, I came
across a beautiful LibreOffice 6.0.1, working wonderfully well.

I write only to suggest replacing LibreOffice with a newer version, or
even the version that solved my problem, 6.0.1, because there are more
people complaining about version 5.4.4.2, because of the same problem,
  in AskLibO. Thank You

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1505368] Re: Bug reports after segmentation fault are never generated

2018-02-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sorry, it's just that you only mentioned Ubuntu 15.04 and 16.10 above.
If you have a problem with 17.10 then please report it from 17.10.

That aside, I think this might be best explained by bug 994921.
Annoyingly, normal bug reports get blocked after a release occurs.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1707898] Re: systemd translations are not synced with upstream

2018-02-18 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
All this has now been fixed upstream. You can disregard the previous
patches I've polluted this bug report with. The attached patch is a
concatenation of the applicable upstream commits. It includes:

* Translations are no longer merged into the .policy files
* 'gettext-domain="systemd"' added to the .policy files
* The ninja() call in debian/rules (so far only in Debian git) now
extracts strings also from the .policy files.

I suppose that this patch should better be committed to Debian.

(And no need any longer from a systemd POV to consider a change of the
policykit-1 packaging.)

** Patch added: "upstream-translation-fixes.patch"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/policykit-1/+bug/1707898/+attachment/5058025/+files/upstream-translation-fixes.patch

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1750269] Re: Graphics driver problem

2018-02-18 Thread Gustavo Silva
Can you go over some details of what you were doing that led to this
error? At first glance, it seems very closely related to bug 1741447.
Before marking this one as a duplicate, I want to ensure it is about the
same thing.

2018-02-18 Thread Gustavo Silva
In that case, I will mark this bug report as Invalid because it may not
be an actual bug but rather a support request. If anyone disagrees, the
status can be set back to its other state.

We've seen a couple of bug reports that look very similar and thus I was
looking to find a pattern in them all. However, if you were able to
install Ubuntu as you expected, that's great!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around

2018-02-18 Thread Doug Parker
I have it on 16.04 LTS running on a Fujitsu LifeBook T4215. There is an
"estimating" message, and the percentage rises from 50% to 100%, then
cycles in the same range.

The laptop is a dual boot with Windows 10, and Windows is also showing
the same, "estimating and cycling" behavior. I've read in other threads
that it is a potential BIOS update issue. IJS.

See also bug #629257 (one lower) for previous (lukewarm) discussions

that relate to the pointless display of that unknown data for long

2018-02-18 Thread Thomas
Hi Gustavo,

After examining the arrived problem I found that the backport updates knob was
activated. I found this strange because I came from making a fresh install of
ubuntu bionic beaver and it was not me who activated this knob. [Before this
install the ubuntu lts 16.04 was on this PC. In the install options of 18.04 I
had choosen to use the entire harddisk and to make a fresh install.]

So, after deactivating this backport updates knob, I used the CLI to
remove '/usr/share/doc/libperl5.26/changelog.Debian.gz'. After removing
this file the problem disappeared: the update process ran smootlhy again
and came to a normal end.

Could you provide more details to what you were doing and what you were
expecting? It is not very clear, at least for me (sorry). Things like,
commands you ran and what they returned can be key to solve issues.

Thanks!

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install any Gtk3 application such as Firefox or Chromium which use modern
file-chooser dialog.
  2. Mount network location through fstab or file-manager ("smb://" = SMB/CIFS,
"sftp://"; = SFTP/SSH and so on)
  3. Try to save/open file to/from the remote location from Gtk3 application.

  Expected results:
  * user is able to find network folder and save/open file to/from it with
GtkFileChooser dialog

  Actual results:
  * user is unable to find network folder and save/open file to/from it with
GtkFileChooser dialog and many user applications are affected

  -
  Original bug description is below:

GTK+3 doesn't show FUSE network shares in file chooser - it used to do
so in GTK+2, and the GTK+3 documentation still mentions it should do
  it.

In the mean time, every user of every application switching to GTK+3
-- including Chromium, at some point between 58 and 60 -- (a change
which happened in 16.04 LTS!!), loses the functionality to open or
save directly to a network share.

I had chosen 16.04 LTS for deploying our workstations at work, and my 50
users have been suddenly unable to do a simple operation they have to do dozens
of times a day.
They now have to "buffer" these files to their local filesystem when saving
them and before uploading them, and then copy them to the company's network
shares.
They were already a little bit grumpy when it stopped working with Firefox,
and are now really side-eyeing me when they apply updates and find Chromium
broken.

I have reported the bug upstream and provided a patch to fix this. I
hope you'll be able and willing to include it to Ubuntu's GTK+3
  package.

  Thanks in advance.

  Colin

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1710511] Re: nano crashed with SIGSEGV in get_sysdep_segment_value()

2018-02-18 Thread Benno Schulenberg
The crash was in libc (while looking up the translation of a string),
not in nano itself. Could it be that you updated libc shortly before
the crash?

As this crash happened in an alpha release, and if you cannot reproduce
it any more in 17.10 proper, I think this bug can be closed.

Title:
"Unknown option: proto udp6" error on openvpn import in KDE network
  manager

Status in kde-baseapps package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I created an openvpn config file, which I could successfully run on
command line. However, as I tried importing the file with the KDE
network manager, I got the following error message:

  "Unknown option: proto udp6"

Since the openvpn command could process the config file without
problems, I think the network manager should be able to do that, too.

Here's my openvpn client config file:
  client
  dev tun
  proto udp6
  remote ::...:ccc 7002
  resolv-retry infinite
  nobind
  persist-key
  persist-tun
  ca ca.crt
  cert my.crt
  key my.key
  remote-cert-tls server
  tls-auth ta.key 1
  cipher AES-256-CBC
  auth SHA512
  comp-lzo

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1697093] Re: Black Screen after boot.

2018-02-18 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Abhiroj, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

1) Could you please provide the full computer model as noted on the
sticker of the computer itself (not from the Bug Description, or the
result of a terminal command)?

2) Did this happen after an update? if so, which specifically?

3) To see if this is resolved in your release, could you please update
your HWE stack via https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack and
advise to the results?

4) If still reproducible after performing 3), please undo your
WORKAROUND, remove and PPAs installed, and provide the missing
information from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot .

** Description changed:

- Please bear with me as This is the last place to resolve the as I have
- tried different resources available for the problem already, but with no
- effect.Long story short, Ubuntu 16.04 was working fine for a long time
- but since recently, It is showing up the black screen after boot.By
- blank screen, I mean:-
+ Ubuntu 16.04 was working fine for a long time but since recently, while
+ booting, after purple screen the screen goes blank. There is no mouse
+ pointer. A cursor blinks for a few seconds and screen goes 100% black
+ but still lit, and then after another few seconds, it goes completely
+ dark as if it is turned off. I then switch to the command-line screen or
+ tty1 to get the logs.

- **The Problem**:-
+ I've tried: the `oibaf-drivers` but this didn't help.

- After Boot (i.e. after purple screen),
-
- 1. There is no mouse pointer.
-
- 2. A cursor blinks for a few seconds and screen goes 100% black but
- still lit, and then after another few seconds, it goes completely dark
- as if it is turned off.
-
- 3. I wait and then switch to the command-line screen or tty1 to get the
- logs.
-
- **What I have done yet**:-
-
- 1. I have updated my system, with `oibaf-drivers` but still no help.
- `fglrx` is officially deprecated for Ubuntu 16.04 and `amdgpu-pro`
- provided by AMD does not support AMD graphic card of my
- system.Currently, the system is using(I don't whether it is perfectly
- working or not) `radeon driver` (The OSS driver for AMD). For more info,
- here are the specs of GPU on my system:-
-
- Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Sun LE
- [Radeon HD 8550M / R5 M230]
-
- VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated
- Graphics Controller (rev 09)
-
- 2. `dmesg | grep -i radeon` shows no error during boot-up.
-
- 3. Running the system in `nomodeset`, which is resulting in highly poor
- graphics performance. It is much deflected compared to ideal.
-
- 4. Not running the system in `nomodeset` but using `startX` in tty1, the
- systemUI restarts again but `mouse pointer turns to a cross` and only
+ Using `startX` in tty1, the mouse pointer turns to a cross and only
folders present on my desktop are visible, but no wallpaper can be seen,
- no side-dock, no launcher (after the click) and no status bar.The
+ no side-dock, no launcher (after the click) and no status bar. The
desktop is completely absent though desktop folders are visible and can
  be opened.

- Please suggest a solution.
+ WORKAROUND: Use kernel parameter:
+ nomodeset

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1739322] Re: Hazardous displays when coming back from sleep state

2018-02-18 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Pierre Wilch, given this issue only happens when using Unity, I'll
reassign to Unity so a specialist may review.

** Description changed:

  Conditions:
  - in the upper bar the display of the seconds must be enabled
(in my case the entire date-and-time is displayed, excepted the week
number);
  - system is set to automatically go into sleep state after the selected delay
(in my case the option "lock the keyboard" is not enabled).
On awakening, for example by using the shift touch, parts of the screen are
blinking according to 1 second rate and 3 seconds cycle.
Coming back to normal behavior needs to close and re-open windows.

  To help to reproduce:
  - edit a message with thunderbird;
  - select ubuntu "parameters";
  - select "Luminosité & verrouillage" ("Brightness & keyboard locking"?);
  - select "1 minute";
  - wait 1 minute and going into sleep state;
  - when in sleep state press the "shift" key;
and then I have a blinking "Christmas tree", too complicated to be described.
I tested it again 3 times why writing this post (firefox had also an opened
window, under thunderbird; with firefox alone, the screen blinks only one time
-should also not-).

WORKAROUND: When the seconds are not displayed in the upper bar there is
  no problem.
+
+ WORKAROUND: Use GNOME Flashback (Metacity) session.

Title:
Missing "idevicerestore" & "libirecovery" from libimobiledevice-utils
  package

Status in libimobiledevice package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Currently all of the other important utilities are included for
installation on Ubuntu. However currently though a Ubuntu Linux user,
is unable to perform an iOS device restore. In order to do so
currently the user needs to have some way of running an up to date
iTunes software with a usb connection to the iPhone, iPad or iPod
  Touch.

Which is quite a hassle to go through in order to completely reload
the device's iOS software. It would be much better if a binary
compiled version of the software (idevicerestore and libirecovery)
could be included in the utilities package.

It would allow the Ubuntu user to be able to quickly and easily
perform software update or device restore functions. Without the need
for a virtual machine running a compatible version of Windows and
iTunes etc. While also saving them from having to run Wine, its
dependencies, iTunes and its own software requirements.

All the would need is what is required to install idevicerestore and
run its actions (the appropriate iOS release download image file).

The code for idevice restore is available here
  (https://cgit.sukimashita.com/idevicerestore.git/) and the library
  from here (https://cgit.sukimashita.com/libirecovery.git/).

  Running Ubuntu 16.04.3
  libimobiledevice-utils 1.2.0+dfsg-3~ubuntu0.2 installed

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi,

not sure if this is an alsa or nvidia/nouveau bug.
HDMI audio output doesn't appear in sound settings output panel.
Audio works well on internal speakers, but it seems there is no way to make
it output to hdmi...

  The laptop has optimus NVIDIA+Intel.
The behaviour is the same with nouveau or nvidia proprietary driver.

Please let me know if further testing is required

Re: [Touch-packages] [Bug 1578951] Re: Libreoffice is crashing causing the session to be booted back to the login screen

2018-02-18 Thread Titus
Dear Christopher,

The problem was solved, and I don't remember what I had to do to solve
it. At the moment I run Ubuntu 17.10 without issues.

Kind regards,

Titus

If I click in a diolog box in Libreoffice, I get a black dialog screen
flashing followed by a crash. It goes back to the logon screen within a few

So if after a crash I click in any of the options to recover a document, it
crashes again.

Title:
  Consider enabling --color by default

Status in iproute2 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  The output of

  ip --color a

looks a lot nicer to me than

  ip a

If you look in /etc/skel/.bashrc you can see that we already enable color for
other commands:
   alias ls='ls --color=auto'
   alias grep='grep --color=auto'
   alias fgrep='fgrep --color=auto'
   alias egrep='egrep --color=auto'

Title:
18.04 daily installer fails missing kernel

Status in apt package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
"No installable kernel was found in the defined APT sources.

You may try to continue without a kernel, and manually install your own
kernel later.
This is only recommended for experts, otherwise you will likely end up with a
machine
  that doesn't boot.

  Continue without installing a kernel."

  Lubuntu Daily 18.04 dated 2018-February 1.

note: yesterdays (Jan 31) install works fine.
