Title:
  Fails writing with Caps Lock

Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  On Ubuntu 16.04:

When clicking on the following 3 keyboard keys simultaneously:
  Left-CTRL + Left-ALT + F1
Then you get to a textual terminal (CLI) where you can type commands.
But there is a problem when typing English letters with Caps Lock turned on:
Instead of English capital letters - you see squares,
so actually you can't login to your user that way
if the username/password has Capital letters.

The only method which allows you to write capital English letters
is to simultaneously click Left-Shift + 'a letter'.
That is the only method that works well.

Note that the Caps Lock key works well with the graphical terminal (pseudo /
pts)
that appears on Ubuntu when hitting simultaneously:
  Left-CTRL + Left-ALT + T

  ---

I assumed the bug report is relevant to "shadow" package because that
the "/bin/login" binary comes from that package.
Package version of 'shadow' is: 1:4.2-3.1ubuntu5

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1890001] Re: Random stuttering while in game

2020-08-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This sounds similar to bug 1883456... Please:

1. Try opening the 'Extensions' app and disable 'Ubuntu AppIndicators'.
Does that fix it?

2. Run 'top' and tell us if any process is using high CPU.

3. Run the following commands after you have experienced the issue:

   journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
   gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.shell > settings.txt

and attach the resulting text files here.

Random stuttering while playing minecraft, no clue what's causing it

thread to 100% and some spikes staying at 100% for a prolonged period.

It may be related to me updating my video driver that is not

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1890084] Re: show app not work

2020-08-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It sounds like you're referring to a dock button. So that we can find
out more about the system please run:

  gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.shell > settings.txt

and then attach the resulting text file.

Please also attach a screenshot of the issue/button/menu if you can.
Just press PrtScn and look in the Pictures folder.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1890050] Re: Mouse malfunction when launching steam

2020-08-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The attached XorgLog.txt shows the mouse is repeatedly:

[ 28256.417] (II) event4 - USB OPTICAL MOUSE: device removed

So this might be a hardware problem or a kernel bug. Try plugging it
into a different port, or try a different mouse.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1889991] Re: Highlight for the task switcher is too subtle

2020-08-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This was declared fixed in bug 1871416 but clearly that's not high
enough contrast for everyone.

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => gnome-shell (Ubuntu)

** Package changed: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) => yaru-theme (Ubuntu)

Title:
Highlight for the task switcher is too subtle

Status in yaru-theme package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The task switcher has a highlight to enable the user to see which task
has focus. In Ubuntu 20.04 (but not earlier versions, I think) this
highlight is so subtle that one can easily miss it.

I'm all for subtlety, but this is *too* subtle. I find myself
  repeatedly choosing the wrong task.

My vision is not perfect but decent. Users with poor vision may find
  this problem particularly difficult.

  Incomplete

Bug description:
The computer stops and restarts the screen and after about 2 secs the display
works normally in maybe 30 secs . The proces repeats for several minutes (maybe

Running gsettings-desktop-schemas 3.31 with mutter 3.30 will result in
  gdm/gnome-shell being unable to start.

Also, ukwm is a fork of mutter so the Kylin devs need to backport the
  relevant commits from mutter.

  The problematic gsettings commit was:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gsettings-desktop-schemas/commit/c7eee129c

I think the mutter commits can be found at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/merge_requests/133

We could easily add a dummy key with the old name but I'm thinking the
way forward is just to package the newer mutter.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1759014] Re: Netplan has no way to control DHCP client

2020-08-02 Thread Adam Kosseck
@ddstreet I've been looking into a different issue, which is due to the Netplan
renderer.
The renderer defaults to networkd on server/cloud and NetworkManager on
Desktop. Some apps expect NetworkManager, and break on systems configured with
networkd (e.g. UI network config, apt-daily, etc).

It's possible that the issue above needs to be tested against both
renderers as it may behave differently in each case?

DHCP configurations where custom settings (routes, nameservers, etc.) need to
be applied.

  [Test case]
  1) Configure netplan for the particulars of the network by configuring an
appropriate dhcp{4,6}-override stanza:

  network:
version: 2
ethernets:
  engreen:
dhcp4: true
dhcp4-overrides:
  use-dns: false
  use-routes: false
  route-metric:

Additionally, if so required, add a custom DNS / routes to the
  configuration. e.g.

nameservers:
  search: [lab, kitchen]
  addresses: [8.8.8.8]

  (See https://netplan.io/reference#dhcp-overrides for the available
  options)

  2) Run 'netplan apply' or reboot to have the configuration applied.
  3) Validate that the routes / DNS are properly ignored and/or replaced by the
defined values.

  [Regression potential]
Minimal; this adds new values to the configuration generated for networkd or
NetworkManager. Existing configurations will remain unchanged, but new
configurations using the dhcp{4,6}-overrides fields will benefit from
additional flexibility.

  ---

Currently DHCP appears to be an all or nothing boolean, which is insufficient
for many network configurations.

Ideally all of the DHCP configuration options supported by systemd would also
be supported in netplan:

https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd.network.html#%5BDHCP%5D%20Section%20Options

As an example, consider the following netplan configuration:

  network:
    version: 2
    renderer: networkd
    ethernets:
  enp0s3:
    dhcp4: yes
    nameservers: [8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4]

After running netplan apply I check the nameservers with systemd-
  resolve --status and it shows:

  DNS Servers: 8.8.8.8
   8.8.4.4
   192.168.1.1

Here, "192.168.1.1" was provided by my DHCP server. On this
particular node, I only want the manually configured DNS servers, but
netplan has no way to indicate this.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1888598] Re: pulseaudio has is buggy with hdmi audio and sleep/wake

2020-08-02 Thread Tessa
I'm seeing another fun intermittent issue after waking from sleep on my
system. sometimes after resume, the audio is really static-y, until i
turn the volume down one notch and back up again. next time it happens
I'll attach the logs again, just to see if there's anything illuminating
there. it only happens maybe ~5% of the time, so it might be a while
until I can reproduce.

Bug description:
on a fresh Ubuntu 20.04 x64 install, I've noticed some troubling bugs
with pulseaudio after putting my system to sleep and then waking it
up. these bugs aren't present on a fresh boot, only after resuming
  from sleep:

  - it forgets which sound output device it's set to, and always reverse to the
motherboard's S/PDIF output.
  - I have two devices connected to my video card, one is a displayport
monitor, and one is a home theater receiver via HDMI. it confuses the two, and
randomly switches which device it thinks is capable of surround sound.
  - it sometimes refuses to switch to the correct audio device, and just resets
any choice back to the internal S/PDIF, until the system is rebooted.

as you can imagine, this a pretty frustrating state of affairs.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1890006] Re: Hash mismatch on "apt update"

2020-08-02 Thread Andrew
VT-x status in BIOS is a red herring. Turns out modern Virtualbox won't
even start VM's without VT-x.

A true cause turned out to be "Windows Sandbox" feature (although I
imagine for some other users the problem might be triggered by "Windows
Subsystem for Linux" or anti-virus software).

Here is how to reproduce it in Windows 10:

  1. Enable "Windows Sandbox" (Control panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn
Windows features on or off)
  2. After restart run Ubuntu live ISO in virtualbox and notice that
a) VM slows to a crawl, some apps (firefox) start crashing randomly, etc
b) Virtualbox shows "green turtle" icon (third from the right on the lower
panel) which lists Execution engine as "native API" instead of "VT-x"
c) Running "apt update" produces error mentioning "hash mismatch"
d) Running workaround (mkdir -p /etc/gcrypt; echo intel-ssse3 >
/etc/gcrypt/hwf.deny) fixes the apt error
  3. Disable "Windows Sandbox" feature
  4. After Windows restart run Ubuntu in Virtualbox and be surprised by green
turtle still being there, all mentioned problems still present
  5. Restart Windows second time, run Ubuntu in Virtualbox again, this time
there is a blue chip instead of green turtle and apt works without workarounds

Clearly it seems that gcrypt isnt at fault here and the true culprits
are Windows Sandbox (possibly some other mechanism that Windows Sandbox
enables) and/or Virtualbox. However the result is that new users are
getting wrong impression about GNU/Linux and Ubuntu in particular (it
appears slow and lags during "live" phase, fails to update after
install).

So I'd say Ubuntu should detect that it's being run in this broken
virtualization mode, show the informative explanation to user (that
their current experience isn't representative && how they can fix that)
or at least enable the workaround for gcrypt (although if SSSE3 is buggy
in this mode, I imagine more things are stealthily broken).

Surprisingly Ubuntu still finishes installation, even with default
"update from internet" option enabled. After installation, "apt update"
still produces the same "hash mismatch" errors though. Enabling
workaround and rerunning "apt update" predictably finds many more (292
right now) packages that are to be upgraded. This fail-open behavior
(installer and updater ignoring the errors) will no doubt lead to subtle
bug down the road for the users as well (I'd argue that it's a security
issue as well - users not being informed about security patches they're
missing).

on a single PC (as far as I know). All testing was done in Virtualbox
and moving VM's to another PC fixed issue (without changing anything
  inside the VM).

On running "apt update", there is an error "Hash Sum mismatch" which
shows that SHA1 and SHA256 hashes differ from expected (while MD5 and
  file size is correct). E.g.:

Hash Sum mismatch

I ran packet capture and extracted archives which are getting

It seems that calculating SHA1 and SHA256 the way APT does it produces
wrong result, while running command line tools sha1sum and sha256sum

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1890006] Re: Hash mismatch on "apt update"

2020-08-02 Thread Andrew
Here is apport stuff, and there are more news.

I confirmed that the problem was in the gcrypt. More precisely,
disabling SSSE3 fixes this issue (echo intel-ssse3 >
/etc/gcrypt/hwf.deny).

The Virtualbox (running on Windows 10) was using software virtualization
("execution engine: native API") instead of VT-x - this might be the
root cause (i.e. bug is in Virtualbox), but I'm helping a friend and
don't have direct access to that PC, so can't test what's blocking VT-x.
Hyper-V and WSL are disabled in Windows features, the person hasn't
checked whether VT-x is enabled in BIOS yet.

I haven't yet verified it. The libgcrypt20 version in Ubuntu is 1.8.5-5ubuntu1
(in Kali as well), while Debian 10 (which isn't affected) uses 1.8.4-5.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1890006] Re: Hash mismatch on "apt update"

2020-08-02 Thread Andrew
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected focal

** Description changed:

This is a really weird bug that is happening on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Live
ISO!!!) and Kali 2020.2, but not Debian 10 (so, it affects at least apt
2.0.2ubuntu0.1 and does not affect 1.8.2.1). It also only occurs on a
single PC (as far as I know). All testing was done in Virtualbox and
moving VM's to another PC fixed issue (without changing anything inside
  the VM).

On running "apt update", there is an error "Hash Sum mismatch" which
shows that SHA1 and SHA256 hashes differ from expected (while MD5 and
  file size is correct). E.g.:

Hash Sum mismatch
Hashes of expected file:
 - Filesize:314536 [weak]
 - SHA256:aa1c6c96b09a0c695dc475d99b407c675e564fbfe51b3e26230c6320b45666d0

Hashes of received file:

 - MD5Sum:5269212c54feb3dceabadb66583f6778 [weak]
 - Filesize:314536 [weak]

I ran packet capture and extracted archives which are getting verified.
All of their hashes are correct (exactly as expected).

It seems that calculating SHA1 and SHA256 the way APT does it produces
wrong result, while running command line tools sha1sum and sha256sum (on
the same PC inside the same VM) produces correct result.

I wrote the minimal reproducible example (hashtest.cc) that produces
  output such as this:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1890006] Re: Hash mismatch on "apt update"

2020-08-02 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Don't see any reason for any apport collecting here.

This needs a clean reproducer or someone with the issue to do the work
to analyse what's wrong.

Looking at the bug report, the output from the reproducer matches that
of the commandline tools?

You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu
Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to apt in Ubuntu.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1890006

Title:
  Hash mismatch on "apt update"

Status in apt package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
This is a really weird bug that is happening on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Live
ISO!!!) and Kali 2020.2, but not Debian 10 (so, it affects at least
apt 2.0.2ubuntu0.1 and does not affect 1.8.2.1). It also only occurs
on a single PC (as far as I know).

Hashes of expected file:
 - Filesize:314536 [weak]
 - SHA256:aa1c6c96b09a0c695dc475d99b407c675e564fbfe51b3e26230c6320b45666d0
 - SHA1:4f438d7e0c78dfb0486f86dc0a3dba30575eb617 [weak]
 - MD5Sum:5269212c54feb3dceabadb66583f6778 [weak]
Hashes of received file:
 - SHA256:f47a968e7a10aff91df8b1d3f682ce11d161ff1b17056268b9ae1c10447523b2
 - SHA1:2839e062232ed234d0c04e60fe6b2a687c950e5b [weak]
 - MD5Sum:5269212c54feb3dceabadb66583f6778 [weak]
 - Filesize:314536 [weak]

I ran packet capture and extracted archives which are getting
verified. All of their hashes are correct (exactly as expected).

It seems that calculating SHA1 and SHA256 the way APT does it produces
wrong result, while running command line tools sha1sum and sha256sum
(on the same PC inside the same VM) produces correct result.

I wrote the minimal reproducible example (hashtest.cc) that produces
  output such as this:

Calculating hashes same way apt does.

   - MD5Sum:c89b13b76197d0d554400e00e46c0740
   - SHA1:f6901a4486e69a1f503401daa02b520f1b0e22ba
   - SHA256:9075301b3961aca23b69bf2868a18dca184b383a0ec1de35516f0a8a182c2cb6
   -
SHA512:7506f6f5c5d5e97f8c6ecac2489e7d6260002bd530370c6193a04620f94285dca0f5cf2bb9ead40afbd72fdf3a239349a57f81165b5b857af6ad7ddeab8da036
   - Checksum-FileSize:892549

Calculating hashes through command line tools.

   - md5sum: c89b13b76197d0d554400e00e46c0740
   - sha1sum: f6901a4486e69a1f503401daa02b520f1b0e22ba
   - sha256sum: 9075301b3961aca23b69bf2868a18dca184b383a0ec1de35516f0a8a182c2cb6
   - sha512sum:
7506f6f5c5d5e97f8c6ecac2489e7d6260002bd530370c6193a04620f94285dca0f5cf2bb9ead40afbd72fdf3a239349a57f81165b5b857af6ad7ddeab8da036

It's in the attachment alongside with an example file that causes this
hash mismatch. There's also debug.log which contains various versions,
etc (although as I said, it has been verified on latest Ubuntu Live
  ISO).

I have a suspicion that the bug is in the gcrypt library, not apt
itself, but I haven't yet verified it. The libgcrypt20 version in
Ubuntu is 1.8.5-5ubuntu1 (in Kali as well), while Debian 10 (which
  isn't affected) uses 1.8.4-5.

Thansk, the hardware ax200 will load ibt-20-1-3.ddc and ibt-20-1-3.sfi,
do you mean the ibt-20-1-3 is version 48 or the ibt-20-1-3 has version
46 and 48?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1890042] [NEW] KDE: Key shortcuts no longer working

2020-08-02 Thread ralphb
Public bug reported:

In the KDE menu editor, you can define keyboard shortcuts for each
program that, when pressed, will launch that respective program.

However, since 20.04, that mechanism no longer works -- pressing any
shortcut key (e.g., Meta+E) no longer starts the assigned program (e.g.,
Emacs GUI).

Of course I don't know if the issue is with menu editor, or kwin, or
something else in Plasma.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1854588] Re: Clicking 'Install' on gdebi-gtk makes it vanish ONLY when .deb opened from Chrome/Firefox

Clicking 'Install' on gdebi-gtk makes it vanish ONLY when .deb opened
  from Chrome/Firefox

Status in Ubuntu MATE:
  Confirmed
Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in gdebi package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Have Ubuntu with gdebi-gtk installed
  2. Open Firefox
  3. Visit some site with deb-package download link or use direct link like
https://github.com/jgm/pandoc/releases/download/2.9.2.1/pandoc-2.9.2.1-1-amd64.deb
  4. Proceed with file downloading
  5. In Firefox select Library → Downloads, click on downloaded deb-file

  Expected results:
  * gdebi-gtk is opened, the package installs normally after users clicks
Install button

  Actual results:
  * gdebi-gtk is opened, the package is not installed because of vanishing of
gdebi-gtk window just after clicking Install button

Before anyone says this bug already exists... it doesn't (at least as
far as I can see). It's just that a lot of similar bugs do/did exist
where people have also experienced the same symptoms (of gdebi-gtk
  vanishing upon clicking 'Install').

So yes this is the same symptoms, but it must be a different cause as
the circumstances are different and doesn't have the same resolution.

  The meat of it...

Basically on a fresh install of Ubuntu MATE 18.04.3 amd64... with Firefox (or
with Chrome if you installed that) go to any site that offers a .deb package
and either...
  a) choose to open it directly from the browser (rather than saving it to
'Downloads' folder)
  b) or... save the file (e.g. to the 'Downloads' folder), BUT!.. open that
file from within the browser itself.

You should find that gdebi-gtk appears but vanishes the moment you
click 'Install' without a prompt for a password, an explanation or the
  package actually getting installed.

This bug has existed since the beginning of Ubuntu 18.04 however it's
been largely confused with other similar bugs. I've had it on half a
dozen machines and confirmed it exists with IRC users on #ubuntu-mate
  of freenode.

However with *this* bug (compared to others) gdebi-gtk works perfectly
fine if you run it from the terminal or just double click the .deb
  package from your file manager.

It's the kind of bug which if you're a hardened desktop Linux user,
  you'd just work around it...

But if you're a novice and you can't get a simple thing like
Teamviewer installed (which is a .deb, and a thing I might ask someone
to do over the phone to try to help them) you likely get fed up and
  re-install Windows :S

Any input on this would be brilliant as I can't seem to get any
  logs/output.

Extra window decorations are created on windows with client-side
  decorations.

Status in Ubuntu MATE:
  Confirmed
Status in gtk+3.0 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Steps to reproduce after a minimal/full install of Ubuntu MATE:

  1. Start up a Gtk3 application with a header bar (tested with Gnome
Software) or a browser (such as Firefox) without using a standard
window title bar that saves the position and size of the window before
  it was closed.

  2. Maximize the application window, then close it without changing the
  window size

  3. Relaunch the application and resize/unmaximize it

After this, dummy window decorations will be created around the
window. This issue has been tested on a Dell XPS 9570 and using Gnome
  Boxes 3.34.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1883477] Re: When closing the lid of laptop, WiFi disconnects and doesn't reconnect afterwards

2020-08-02 Thread Markus1978
Another thing I noticed recently:

I've disabled standby when closing the Lid. If I trigger standby
manually and then close the lid, the networking resumes as expected
after waking the computer up.

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I am getting this issue since about a year on my Lenovo Thinkpad x240
  with Ubuntu Mate

I have configured the computer to stay awake and empty the screen
(system settings > power management) when I close the lid with the
  power plugged in.

  What I expect to happen:
Wifi network stays connected and network related programs (like bit-torrent
or http downloads) continue to run.

  What actually happens:
Wifi always disconnects after closing the lid and doesn't come back upon
opening it.
I just see a "two arrows"-symbol on the top bar.

When I try to reconnect manually, the wifi symbol is blinking, but the
network manager eventually gives up.
I have to disable wifi (or network as a whole) for a second and enable it
again, to then automatically reconnect to my home wifi network.

Downgrading to libjson-c2_0.11-4ubuntu2 resolves the issue.

  Steps to reproduce:
  * Create a system with Xenial installed (I'm using an AWS instance with AMI
ami-0f2ed58082cb08a4d)
  * Install upstart: apt-get install upstart-sysv
  * Reboot
  * Update apt and upgrade the packages: apt-get update && apt-get upgrade .
This causes the kernel panic.
  * To repeat the kernel panic, run dpkg --configure -a
