[Touch-packages] [Bug 1698083] Re: Maximize vertically/horizontally doesn't work (in some apps)

2021-11-25 Thread James Lewis
Since this bug was logged 5 years ago, and is still present... in fact
it is now on a shortlist of 2 bugs that will stop my adoption of
Wayland, I thought I would confirm that it is still present in Ubuntu
22.04 (development branch), at the time of writing, with Gnome 41.1.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1515977] Re: Shell rotates inappropriately in windowed mode

2015-11-14 Thread James Lewis
It looks to me like the decision whether to honour the orientation
restriction in the .desktop file is keyed on if an external screen is in
use, not if the shell is running in windowed mode... clearly for some
deviices operating in windowed mode on the built in screen would be
desirable.

Also, the lock screen has a fixed orientation, so using the device in
windowed mode in a different orientation to the lock screen will mean
that if the screen locks the orientation will change and cannot be
changed back without returning to staged mode.

I've read the bug you marked as a duplicate, and it appears to describe
the mouse wheel working in some apps but not in others... I am reporting
that the mouse wheel sometimes operates the window that is not on top,
when windows are overlapped, this appears to be a different symptom

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1441241] Re: Ubuntu Nexus 4 does not detect location

2015-04-14 Thread James Lewis
This does appear to work for me, but after soem experimentation with
another Nexus 4 user, it seems that it's very weak... the phone fails to
get a GPS lock when in a case, but can when it's not in the case... I
don't know how much of the GPS system is implemented in Software vs how
much is in hardware... I'm told the GPS on the Nexus 4 is good under
Android although I have not tested this...

does not manage to locate me even if location detection and GPS are
on. The only way I manage to locate myself is through being connected
  to a wireless network.

I have tried using different apps and scopes that all use location
data and none of them receive any GPS information unless I am on a
  wireless network.

I never turn GPS off and I live in central London so there is no way
it cannot find a GPS fix (I also have spend a lot of time outside and
still no luck). I am using the OSMTouch app and it spends 20 seconds
trying to locate me and comes back with Geolocation failed.

This is using a Nexus 4. I have tried the current stable and devel-
  proposed channels.

I asked on IRC this morning to find other people having issues with
Nexus 4 GPS including one person who said: 'on the N4 i actually have
to leave the device outside on the window shelf for 20-30 min to get
  GPS at all.'

Is this a known issue with the Nexus 4? Is there a fix for this? Can
  anybody help fix this?

2022-09-24 Thread James Lewis
I'm still trying to understand the exact implications of this, since I
make extensive use of LXC containers, using subuid/subgid mapping, so
that users can create containers without needing access to UID 0.

Are we talking about blocking namespaces where UID 0 in the container is
mapped to the real UID 0, or will it also impact containers where UID 0
in the container is mapped to some other UID.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1320752] Re: MAC Spoofing / Cloning for WiFi is broken in Trusty 14.04 / 14.10 and all others including Mint 17

2014-12-12 Thread James Lewis
Just encountered this on a Lenovo laptop with the built in Intel WiFi,
before I found this bug I discovered that if you bring the interface
down change the mac address and bring it back up again before network
manager starts, and then restart network manager some time after the
user logs in, it will connect successfully... not sure why.

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:

Status in wpasupplicant package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  **SHORT OVERVIEW**

"Cloned MAC Address" feature doesn't work with any USB WiFi adapters
in 14.04, 14.10, Mint 17 and likely all others based on Ubuntu.

It worked under 13.10 and was broken from day one in 14.04+.
This is not an upgrade issue, i did a clean install to test.
Atheros, Realtek, Ralink adapters tested, this has nothing to do with the
driver type.

The only symptoms are WiFi not connecting and the following dmesg
  output:

  [ 214.296350] wlan0: authenticate with 98:fc:11:f2:f7:43
  [ 214.305098] wlan0: send auth to 98:fc:11:f2:f7:43 (try 1/3)
  [ 214.307421] wlan0: authenticated
  [ 219.367559] wlan0: deauthenticating from 98:fc:11:f2:f7:43 by local choice
(reason=3)

  **TEMP SOLUTION***

This bug is caused by wpasupplicant (2.1-0ubuntu1.1) in Trusty,
  network-manager is not the culprit.

I quick fix is to downgrade wpasupplicant to the Saucy version,
wpasupplicant (1.0-3ubuntu2). This is relatively easy and doesn't seem
  to affect anything else.

  Original bug report info:

after setting the mac to change in networkmanager i try to connect yet it
never will, when looking at the logs it says it got disconnected by local
choice (reason 3), it appeared it was because the mac wasnt effectively changed
but then again i tried to do so disabling network-manager -> macchanger -m ->
enabling network-manager, i checked with ifconfig if the mac has changed and it
did however the result was the same

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1537056] Re: apt-add-repository always returns "user or team does not exist." for ppa repos

2016-10-19 Thread James Lewis
Just encountered this bug in 16.10, it reported the exact "user or team
does not exist." error, until I added a system wide proxy.

Title:
apt-add-repository always returns "user or team does not exist." for
  ppa repos

Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have just installed a fresh Ubuntu 15.10 to my machine and run into
trouble with adding ppa repositories using apt-add-repository:

  for e.g. running
  apt-add-repository ppa:git-core/ppa
  Cannot add PPA: 'ppa:~git-core/ubuntu/ppa'.
ERROR: '~git-core' user or team does not exist.

After debugging a lot of code, I found the trouble, the used proxy-
server needs authentification but the apt-add-repository does not
throw a correct error message fro this case:

The PPAException raised here seems to be interpreted as not available,
which is rather hard to debug.

  def _get_https_content_py3(lp_url):
  print("RETRIEVING URL: %s"%lp_url)
  try:
  request = urllib.request.Request(str(lp_url), headers={"Accept":"
application/json"})
  lp_page = urllib.request.urlopen(request, cafile=LAUNCHPAD_PPA_CERT)
  json_data = lp_page.read().decode("utf-8", "strict")
  print("RV: %s"%str(json_data))
  except (URLError, HTTPException) as e:
  # HTTPException doesn't have a reason but might have a string
  # representation
  print(e)
  reason = hasattr(e, "reason") and e.reason or e
  raise PPAException("Error reading %s: %s" % (lp_url, reason), e)

The last print(e) gives me the hint what went wrong:

For the future it would be great to get a correct error message.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1478319] Re: Wifi doesn't reconnect to AP if it uses the same SSID than another AP

2016-11-17 Thread James Lewis
I have a corporate wifi network in my office with multiple AP's and i
often see it disconnect and ask for the password again usually
entering the password doesnt fix it. i assume this is the same issue.

My ISP (Free in France) provides a hotspot service so that customers
can use the connection of any other customer using a generic open Wifi
connection (for reference http://www.free.fr/assistance/2303.html - in
  French)

The SSID is called 'FreeWifi' on all the boxes but obviously APs are
all different since it's customers' DSL routers.

When I connect to one of this access point, suspend the phone and
resume it in another location where the SSID is available but from a
different AP, the phone doesn't connect to this AP and the list of
networks in the network-indicator doesn't refresh and still show the
list of network from the previous location. I have to forget the
network called 'FreeWifi' and reconnect in order to refresh the list
  and make it work.

  It's 100% reproducible.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1575191] Re: plus.google.com re-layouts horizontally when the top bar shows/hides

2016-04-27 Thread James Lewis
Actually that's a good point +Daniel Bull, I guess it makes sense not to
change the viewport size... the question is what should it be set to...
the site looks better (no blank borders) with the viewport set to the
largest size it's going to be... but by rights, if the page tries to
render inside that area so that it won't be scrolled, then it should be
set to the smallest size it's going to be.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1575191] Re: plus.google.com re-layouts horizontally when the top bar shows/hides

2016-04-28 Thread James Lewis
+Chris Coulson

I'm not disputing what you say, since I'm not in a position to fix this
issue, however if the solution suggested by +Daniel Bull is not correct
then can you clarify what would be the correct solution, since currently
on the M10 tablet, Google+ is unusable.

If I'm reading your post correctly, you are saying that on the M10, it
"gets the standard desktop UI", so since it's 1920x1200 and still hides
the location bar, are you suggesting this is a bug, and the location bar
should be displayed all the time?

I'm actually pretty happy with the solution of simply not hiding the
location bar, as you say, this would be expected behaviour on a
"desktop" browser, it would certainly also be nice to have some control
over the UI scaling since in desktop mode apps are still scaled like
mobile apps, but I'm sure that's coming.

I notice that part of the Google UI also auto-hides, but I guess they
would cater for that.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1575191] Re: plus.google.com re-layouts horizontally when the top bar shows/hides

2016-04-29 Thread James Lewis
+Olivier Tilloy Never hiding it in desktop mode should be very
obvious... but this is something of a middle ground where it's being
used in tablet mode. The screen is large enough to switch into the
tabbed mode, but it's still using a touch interface on a small screen...
I'm not sure what the best thing to do there is, I certainly enjoy the
"full browser" experience on the tablet even in touch mode, so I would
definitely not want to go back to the mobile interface...

Short of some other solution which does not force the viewport to change
(like bringing in the url bar over the top of the rendered HTML, rather
than changing the size of the viewport)... I can't see much other
option, I think google does leave the URL bar there on android in this
context.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1576574] [NEW] dekko sending sensitive to poor network, can loose emails

Public bug reported:

When sending a message on Dekko, there is no local "outgoing" folder, so
if a message it being send while the network is poor, the sending

I'm not sure what it's doing, but it's using half my RAM and CPU... it
appears to reliably leak memory over time, since I don't have a problem
after login, but if I leave it a few days eventually the box grinds to a
halt in an almost never ending swap grind I end up having to alt-f6
/ kill Xorg or hard boot depending on how soon I catch it.

I've attached the output requested above, hope this helps some I
have a number of 14.04 machines and this is the only one seeing this
issue.

Title:
Runaway init --user consuming CPU and RAM

Status in “upstart” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
My Unity 8 froze on my Nexus 4. After connecting it to USB and adb
shell, I found that 'init --user' was using 100% CPU and 60% RAM (>
1g). I ran "ubuntu-bug upstart" while it was still running to try and
gather any information about what it was doing.
