  0. Remove your Ubuntu One account if you have one set up already.
  1. In System Settings, choose “Accounts” > “Ubuntu One”.

What you see: A dialog with an e-mail address field containing placeholder
text:
  “example: u...@ubuntu.com”

What you should see: No such placeholder text.

Placeholder text is a bad idea in general, because it’s easily confused with
actual field contents, because you can’t check it once you’ve entered anything,
and because it can make the field look disabled.
  <https://www.nngroup.com/articles/form-design-placeholders/>
  <http://baymard.com/blog/mobile-forms-avoid-inline-labels>

And this placeholder text is particularly bad because it doesn’t tell
anyone anything they don’t already know (nobody will not understand
what an “e-mail address” is, but become enlightened when they see
“example: u...@ubuntu.com”), and because it’s present only for the
e-mail address field and not the password field, strengthening the
impression that it is actual field contents.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1674931] Re: Unity8 only available in English on Desktop

2017-03-23 Thread Rodney Dawes
As a workaround, you need to install "language-package-gnome-XX" for the
language you want (or use the language-selector-gtk tool to do it for
you). Then the language should be available in Unity8 system-settings.

The only "pre-installed" language pack for the ISO is I think English,
and whatever language you select in the installer.

To make a decision about getting rid of langpacks (which really, is
going to basically be necessary for snaps anyway), we need an analysis
of size difference in packages and how much extra disk space would be
used by having all the translations for all default apps, always
installed. And to convince Ubuntu Release Team and maybe Tech Board to
get it done.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1673471] Re: No way to obscure or prevent notifications when screen locked

2017-03-16 Thread Rodney Dawes
I won't disagree with that, but it's an unscheduled thing. I filed
against notify-osd as it's what is providing the
org.freedesktop.Notifications interface currently. There is no way in
the spec to specify how private something is, so we'd need to add some
custom X-property for that I think. It would also need to detect when
the screen is locked and obscure or avoid showing the notifications.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1673469] [NEW] Indicator panel exposes extraneous user info on lock screen

2017-03-16 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

Even while the indicators cannot be opened on the lock screen, with the
option disabled in privacy settings, some indicators which can expose
extraneous information about the user and device status, will still be
shown.

For example, the following extra information is exposed, just from
icons:

- Unread messages avaialble
- Location enabled
- Bluetooth enabled and if a device is connected
- Wi-Fi and GSM radio connectivity

Some of these could possibly be individually optional to show/hide on

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1673466] [NEW] Launcher shown on lock screen despite privacy settings

Public bug reported:

With the launcher set to "always shown" in Unity 8, and with privacy
settings configured to not show the launcher on the lock screen, it
still shows on the Unity 8 lock screen after the timeout has passed.

It seems like really the launcher should never be shown on the lock

Sometime in the last few days my phone lost the ability to connect to
wifi networks and the network indicator at the top has stopped
  working.

Currently between "Bluetooth" and "Sound" I have a gear icon and the
caption "indicator-network". When I select it, the rest of the screen
is blank. There are no settings available and no way to connect to a
  wifi network.

On the System Settings app, if I tap on the "Wi-Fi" icon, I can see
"Previous networks". But below that the page is just white, there is
no way to select a wifi network.

Rebooting the phone doesn't seem to fix the problem.

Given that this is an MX4 and therefore the USB port doesn't work, and
there's no SD card slot, there's vanishingly few ways to get data in
and out of this phone now. If there's a solution to the problem, it's
going to have to involve something other than updating system
  software.

Current system software is Ubuntu 15.05 (OTA-12).

Per the comments the .config/connectivity-service/config.ini file
seems to hold bad or outdated info and needs to be manually deleted
and then recreated by the service.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1611249] Re: Notification area is out of the screen

2017-02-13 Thread Rodney Dawes
Moving to unity8 as this looks like a rendering issue with the top
panel, and nothing to do with individual indicators themselves.

Notification area is out of the screen

Status in Ubuntu Music App:
  Invalid
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
As You can see in the picture the icons of my indicator area (bq E4.5)
flew out of the screen of my phone. No matter whether in vertical or
horizontal position, the upper parts of the icons are cut off.

  How it happened:
I went for a run with Music Player on and screen rotation unlocked. As it's
not possible to control the music player with locked screen I set the locking
time on 5 minutes. As we run we hold a phone in a hand at ~45 degree. That
means the screen rotated several times during the first hour of my run. Then
after 50-60 minutes music player crashed and left indicators in this strange
position. I couldn't turn the music player on again. It tried to launch and
then after several seconds crashed over and over again. I have about 4GB of
music files on my phone. I thought myself that perhaps there may be a problem
with the memory so I opened a music folder with the File Manager and opened one
mp3 file. It took the Player some time but it eventually launched and started
to play. After that I closed it and reopened which succeded and started to play
my 4GB long queue using shuffle. Indicator area stayed however in the position
from the photo.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1664346] [NEW] Missing translatable strings in translation template

2017-02-13 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

Some of the translatable strings in indicator-datetime, particularly the

existing issues related to time formats being wrong in some locales.

Status in indicator-datetime package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  On my Aquaris 4.5, OTA-13, indicator-datetime
15.10+15.04.20160820.1-0ubuntu1, it uses too much RSS. A typical RSS
is 315892, almost three times as much as unity8.

I believe this is an OTA regression. I'm not sure if it regressed from
  OTA-11 or OTA-12.

Just now, I got caught in an oom killer loop with constant killing of
unity8-dash because of this, making my phone unusable. I had to kill
indicator-datetime manually. It then restarted automatically and now
uses 80456 RSS only. I see bug 1633319 exists complaining about a
memory leak. It's not exactly the same version since mine is
  15.10+15.04.20160820.1-0ubuntu1 and that one is
15.10+16.10.20160820.1-0ubuntu1. But perhaps the upstream versions are
the same or something? Perhaps the two are dupes, but I'll let someone
  more familiar make that determination.

I have only a handful of alarms (perhaps five on average; rarely more)
but I do have my Google calendar syncing with perhaps hundreds of
events. However, there's no reason that this should cause indicator-
datetime to use more RSS; it shouldn't be keeping these in memory.

  a) change the system's timezone based on the computer's location (as

  b) have the option to display the time of the auto-detected location

Status in indicator-datetime package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  See attached screenshots.

I am currently in Spain, and unity-control-center datetime is
configurd to automatically update the timezone based on IP
  geolocation.

This does not work (and honestly hasn't worked for quite some time,
  well before 16.04).

In one screenshot, you can see that my timezone is set as New York,
and the "Automatically from the Internet" button is selected for "Set
  the time".

In the other screenshot, you can clearly see that my geolocation shows
that I am in Spain, but the time has NOT updated to reflect that I'm
  on a different European timezone.

This has never worked in Ubuntu that I can recall, I always have to
  manually change the location.

  Expected Behaviour:

Timezone is updated automatically whenever I am connected to the internet in
a different timezone.

When you have connected to a WLAN you can look at the connection

Feature Request: special Browser window for logging in to WiFi

Bug description:
Problem occurs with: Ubuntu, all versions
Does not occur with: Fedora 21 and later, elementary OS 0.3 and later, OS X
10.7 and later

WiFi Hotspots normally redirect all traffic to a special IP address which
provides a Welcome page with a login form. Accessing this server with another
protocol does not work, which is not a problem for POP3, IMAP or SSH, but it is
a problem if you connect by https, because your browser will recognise the
wrong security certificate or the port is not even used (which is even better
in my opinion).
  1) So if I open a browser it automatically tries to open its Start page which
is https in my case (I use the HTTPS Everywhere plugin in my firefox). Because
it uses https, I will not be redirected to the login page and am waiting in
front of an empty page. Then I manually have to open a link which does not use
https and get redirected to the login page.
  2) Another annoying thing are other users who open a saved browser session.
All saved (http-)tabs will be redirected to the welcome page so that it does
not make any sense anymore to save the browser session.
  3) Firefox also sometimes does compatibility checks and plugin updates at
start time. These also fail when trying to login to a Hotspot network.

How can we solve this problem?

First, network manager should check if the connected wireless network is a
Hotspot network. This chan be done by a simple http request to a stable and
well-known page, for example http://gnome.org/netcheck which returns a known
token (something like "Yes, you are connected to the Internet").
  - If the token is returned, everything is fine and the user has connection
  - If it does not receive this token but a redirect, it should open a special
browser-window (not the default browser because of the reasons above) which
allows to log-in to the network before other internet applications are started.
  - In any other case, network manager could try another server (backup) or
stop probing.

For known wireless networks, network manager could also provide a
  setting to disable/autodetect/force hotspot login.

  : "Whenever Ubuntu
makes a new network connection, if 'Prompt whenever a new connection
requires Web login' is checked, it should perform HTTP and DNS checks
that the connection is valid. If it is not..."

Title:
Indicator can fail to display panel icon

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Incomplete
Status in indicator-network package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  current build number: 122
  device name: krillin
  channel: ubuntu-touch/devel-proposed

It's possible for the device to boot in such a manner that the
network-indicator doesn't display an icon on the top panel ( see
  attached screenshot ).

This bug was discovered while testing an ofono vivid silo. The
  associated ofono merge request is:

  https://code.launchpad.net/~phablet-
  team/ofono/ww10-update/+merge/250665

The version of ofono in the silo (ubuntu-013) is:

  1.12.bzr6888+15.04.20150224-0ubuntu1

This version of ofono fixes a couple of bugs, the most important being
a regression on krillin where the 2nd SIM isn't always recognized on
  boot.

My testing was performed using two SIMs, with the 2nd SIM being PIN-
  locked.

In the case of the missing icon, no PIN unlock screen was displayed
  after booting.

I checked using 'ps' and an indicator-network process is running,
however when I checked /home/phablet/.cache/upstart, there only
indicator-network log files I see are the saved .gz files. There's no
unzipped/current indicator-network.log. The .gz log file with the
most recent timestamp shows a single log message:

  phablet@ubuntu-phablet:~/.cache/upstart$ less indicator-network.log.1.gz
  void core::dbus::Property::handle_changed(const
core::dbus::types::Variant&) [with PropertyType =
org::freedesktop::URfkill::Interface::Killswitch::Property::State]:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method "Get" with signature "ss" on
interface "org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties" doesn't exist

I checked and urfkilld is running on the system.

I also verified that there were no crash files present on the system.

I also checked and there was nothing relevant in syslog.

This bug is hard to reproduce as well. I've hit it 4 or 5 times out
of a total of maybe 45-50 reboots.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 779782] Re: Mouse release does not activate playback control buttons

2017-01-12 Thread Rodney Dawes
Moving to ido where the widget is implemented. The indicator itself
doesn't know anything about mouse button press state, menu position or
such, as it doesn't render the widgets. That's done on the unity side.

** Package changed: indicator-sound (Ubuntu) => ido (Ubuntu)

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu

  indicator-sound 12.10.2+14.04.20140401-0ubuntu1, Ubuntu 14.04

In maverick's sound menu, it was possible to activate the banshee or
rhythmbox play/pause, back, and forward controls by pressing the mouse
on the indicator applet sound icon, dragging to the chosen control
with the mouse button held down, and releasing the mouse button. It
looks like the sound menu spec at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoundMenu is
ambiguous as to whether this should activate the controls, but all
other menu items in the indicator applet can be activated in this way
(as an example, the mute option in the sound menu). The fact that this
no longer works for the playback control buttons seems like a bug.

To be clear, click/release on the sound menu icon followed by
click/release on the playback buttons works perfectly well. The
inconsistency is in the playback buttons being more picky than other
menu items, in that they can't be triggered by just a mouse release.

  : "Conversely, clicking
on a different menu item (or any menu title), moving to a button, and
  releasing, should activate that button."

Bug description:
  Same as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-system-
settings/+bug/1576986 but I thought I'd also post it here.

I am actually typing this on a Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard
  connected to my M10 tablet.

  Device: Bq Aquaris M10
  OS: OTA-10.1

Generally bluetooth devices that are not version 4 or bluetooth smart
(BLE) seem to work and pair fine with the Aquaris E4.5 and the M10.
However, when it comes to BLE/version 4, things obviously get too
complicated for the system bluetooth settings because it doesn't even
  manage to discover these devices.

OTA-10.1 uses Bluez version 5.37, which is perfectly capable of
discovering and pairing with BLE devices, but in Ubuntu Touch it
requires the use of "bluetoothctl" in the terminal. I will describe
  the steps needed below:

  phablet@ubuntu-phablet:-$ bluetoothctl
  [bluetooth]# scan on

wait for device to show up in list, typically:
  [NEW] Device 01:02:FF:A8:BB:00 DeviceName

  [bluetooth]# discoverable on
  Changing discoverable on succeeded
  [bluetooth]# agent on
  Agent registered
  [bluetooth]# default-agent
  Default agent request successful
  [bluetooth]# pairable on
  Changing pairable on succeeded

Now tell bluetoothctl to pair the device
  [bluetooth]# pair 01:02:FF:A8:BB:00
  Attempting to pair with 01:02:FF:A8:BB:00

If pairing with MS Universal Foldable Keyboard, you will probably see
a 6-digit code, punch that code on the keyboard and hit return.

  [CHG] Device 01:02:FF:A8:BB:00 Connected: yes
  [agent] Passkey: 123456

You should be good to go.

However, the MS Foldable Keyboard does not show up in system bluetooth
settings (see attached screenshot) and getting the M10 to recognize
that the Keyboard is turned off seems to require a reboot (and
possibly also bluetooth turned off). Otherwise, the onscreen keyboard
  doesn't show up.

filled icon when something connects. Additionally it would be useful
if the icon would turn blue when there is actual traffic happening.
This is something I've been used to from previous phones and it helps
greatly to identify the state of the connection. For instance, the
Music player playing music to a Bluetooth headset would be immediately
visible when you've put the headset away already and forgot to stop
  the music player.

Also, it causes bug reports of failed connections to be more detailed
as this gives details to the developer whether the connection failed
when establishing the ACL link or if something failed after a profile
  has been connected already.

the keyboard layouts available in Ubuntu desktop.
  2. Select a layout which is not yet available in Ubuntu Touch keyboard, for
example Bengali/ Hindi.

  What happens:
The selected layout appears inside the keyboard settings indicator now along
with a marked checkbox next to it. But the OSK doesn't list the selected layout
as expected.

  Expected:
The user should not be able to select these layouts when there's no external
keyboard attached, or at least the keyboard settings indicator should not show
this selected layout without an external keyboard. Otherwise this gives a false
impression about the availability of a missing layout.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1651473] Re: App Drawer access is not obvious

2016-12-23 Thread Rodney Dawes
There's no way to "push to the left edge" inside a VM window really (and
moving my mouse to the edge doesn't seem to open it, nor was it showing
the launcher prior to me setting it to always-shown).

Also, relying on mouse gestures is not good for accessibility.

As for app grid versus scopes, the "quick" design I drew up for
something like this from way back when and showed to Paty, basically had
two BFBs on the launcher. One for the app grid, and a separate one for
"search" (scopes).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1645798] Re: No snaps appear in scope on Core 16

2016-12-15 Thread Rodney Dawes
You can run the scope with U1_DEBUG=1 set, and it will spew more debug
info.

I doubt it's threads. We're not using QtDBus here really. The ubuntu-
download-manager code does use it, but we're no longer really using it
in the scope, only the client object gets created on startup, and then
never used. There is an MP to remove the dependency on ubuntu-download-
manager and libclick in https://bileto.ubuntu.com/#/ticket/2306, and I
asked Michael to build a snap with it and try, but it was still failing
for him with that.

I guess you'd need to run the scope manually under gdb to be able to get
a trace, but I can't tell you how to do that on an all snaps system,
unfortunately.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1645798] Re: No snaps appear in scope on Core 16

2016-12-12 Thread Rodney Dawes
Michi, the exception itself seems to be from
https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-team/unity-scopes-
api/trunk/view/head:/src/scopes/internal/zmq_middleware/ZmqMiddleware.cpp
and getting bubbled up through the bits.

Judging from the logs, what appears to happen is that the scope is
started, and initialized, and we are then sent a Query(), and we have a
Reply object to push results back through. At that point, the socket
seems to get closed and the middleware is stopped. The scope then has
results and tries to push(), but since the middleware is stopped, we get
the exception from deep inside the scopes API.

It's true that the scope itself could probably handle this very
unexpected situation more gracefully on its own, but doing so won't
really resolve the problem here of there not being any results, since
the socket is closed and thus it's impossible for the scope to give any
results back to the shell.

socket is getting closed/removed in the middle of calling Query in the
scope:

(process:2658): ubuntu-app-launch-DEBUG: Initialized Click DB
[2016-12-09 05:20:22.797] ERROR: clickscope: ObjectAdapter: error unmarshaling
request header (id: , adapter: clickscope-c, op: ): ZmqReceiver::receive():
socket was closed

[2016-12-09 05:20:22.807] ERROR: clickscope: ReplyImpl::error():
unity::scopes::MiddlewareException: Cannot invoke operations while middleware
is stopped

I'm not sure why this would happen, and I didn't realize we need to
handle exceptions in the middleware, within the scope itself. Any idea
why the socket would be getting destroyed from the other end? This seems
to be why the scope is blank.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1645798] Re: No snaps appear in scope on Core 16

2016-12-08 Thread Rodney Dawes
"BFB" is "Big Flavorful Button" ;)

It's the huge orange "Ubuntu Store" result that appears at the bottom of
the scope.

So, from your screenshot it looks like you are hitting case number 2
from my previous post. Is there a crash report in /var/crash/ for the
scoperunner? If not, does running "ubuntu-app-launch-appids" on this
system show any snap results?

If this is the unity8 snap as well, it looks like in the screenshot that
even System Settings isn't being found. With that and the missing store
result, it seems like the scope is crashing or being killed before it
can push any results. Can you attach the unity8-dash.log and scope-
registry.log files? Normally they are in ~/.cache/upstart/ but not sure
where exactly that equates to for the unity8 snap on core.

@michi Is there at least the BFB result for the store? Does it show
"Apps" at the top of the dash? Or is everything totally blank?

If answers are "yes, yes, no" then the result set is indeed just empty for some
reason.
If answers are "no, yes, no" then either unity-scope-snappy is not installed
and it's getting no results, or it's crashing/failing to complete the run.
If answers are "no, no, yes" then the system thinks the scope isn't available
and it's not being run.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1482551] Re: "External" app setting -> System Settings -> Back doesn't return to "External" app

2016-12-05 Thread Rodney Dawes
OK. I'm going to remove the indicators from this as it really doesn't
make sense there. When you open a settings panel or app from the
indicators, the indicator itself is closed. It would be very weird if
when that app was closed, the indicator automatically opened back up
again.

An appropriate action in system-settings though when a panel is opened
via the URL directly, rather than from within the app itself, is to just
exit when the user presses the back button, assuming the system-settings
app was not already running (which complicates things).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1646517] Re: In unity8-session snap on Core 16, no battery icon is shown

2016-12-05 Thread Rodney Dawes
I think we need to do a bit more here to really make this right. The
reason the indicator isn't showing in the top panel normally in this
case, is because your VM doesn't have a battery. So not showing a
battery icon on a system without a battery, is totally expected.

However, it is still being run, and due to the indicators drop-down
panel design of Unity 8, normally accessible, despite it not being
particularly useful for certain systems.

Even more fun is that the "Battery" panel in System Settings is already
being hidden, but clicking on "Battery settings..." in the indicator
will open it anyway.

We need some way to hide certain indicators from the drop-down as well
as from the panel.

Just tried this in my VM and it is opening very quickly. I don't see

.desktop files.

There are some cases where indicators need fixed in other ways to deal
with similarly related issues (parsing other .desktop files), but
generally the data/*.desktop.in files aren't a problem here, from what I
can see.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1638708] Re: Hardcoded paths in desktop files need to be processed need $SNAP prefixing

2016-12-02 Thread Rodney Dawes
I'm not sure how much of this is valid. Most of these are .desktop files
that are installed in the XDG autostart directory, and thus only used in
environments which use that, of which Unity8 is not one, especially so
in its snap form.

I suppose this also begs the question of whether Unity 8 should
implement the XDG autostart spec?

I don't know anything about how those staging images based on xenial are
being built exactly, but this sounds like snapd-login-service is missing
for some reason. The libsnapd-glib1 package Recommends it, but it's not
getting pulled into the image.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1639208] Re: The app store button is hardcoded to the Click Store scope

2016-11-04 Thread Rodney Dawes
Can we instead just get rid of this icon in the manage dash view? Or at
least just hide it for now?

The complexity of handling the either/or situation is too great I think,
and there are already so many other ways to get to the store anyway.
Right now, the store scope also appears in the list of scopes in the
manage dash view anyway, so this is just duplicating something already
in the list. Then the apps scope has the big icon to go to the store. My
understanding is that the new app drawer design also has yet another
hard-coded visual element to open the store, which I think shouldn't be
there.

When we switch to having an app for the store, we can look at
implementing a URL handler for store:/// as well, but I don't think we
should be doing that for the snappy scope and click scope.

Can you attach before/after screenshots? You should be able to take a
screenshot by pressing both Vol Up+Vol Dn at the same time. You should
be able to attach them to the bug via the browser on the M10 or transfer
them via USB to a PC for attaching to the bug.

If you attach with USB and with developer mode enabled, you can use the
"phablet-shell" tool on Ubuntu to shell in to the tablet, and watch
/home/phablet/.cache/upstart/dbus.log while trying to log in. There may
be some indication of what's going on printed to this file while

Realistically, I'm not sure I can give a solid answer on PPC at the
moment. As we're migrating to snaps, a lot of changes are happening on
the server side, and this will affect ubuntuone-credentials at some
point. I expect we may also have some changes from design as well.
As a result, there will likely be some major changes in ubuntuone-
credentials in the not so distant future, which may improve the
situation for tests on PPC.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1594944] Re: Setup.exec() for existing account type results in blank full screen window

2016-09-19 Thread Rodney Dawes
I don't think there is currently any reasonable way to verify this bug,
nor that this fix necessarily fixes the core issue. I was only able to
recreate this issue when using the branches to attempt to avoid deleting
the U1 token at all (which, I've since come to realize is basically
impossible to avoid at this point), and when I attempted to use the
proposed fix, instead of a blank window, I simply got no window, because
online-accounts would not open the account plug-in to log in again, if
the account already exists.

While the code being fixed here may have been wrong, I don't think it
will give the desired result. Even with this fix, one must still delete
the account in order to get the login window to be displayed.

This API is what the online accounts integration in the scopes API
relies upon, to allow logging in to accounts, and so we have come to
rely upon this API as well in multiple places, as a means to log into
the Ubuntu One account, when it is necessary to do so. However, due to
this issue, the only way to reliably present a login window at an
appropriate time, is to delete the account when it appears to have
been invalidated by the server, and to then present the login window
  to create a new account.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1618590] Re: scoperunner crashed with SIGSEGV in QObject::disconnect()

2016-09-16 Thread Rodney Dawes
This appears to be a crash inside Qt itself, and only occurs with 5.6+,
apparently due to QDBus changing to use threading instead of the event
loop, for asynchronous operations. There seems to be some fixes in Qt
Code Review that should theoretically fix this. It would be nice if we
could test these and get them into our release of Qt. I'm afraid there
won't be any way to work around this crash in the scope or ubuntu-
download-manager (we're keeping a u-d-m singleton object around, which
is destroyed on exit) code itself.

** Package changed: unity-scope-click (Ubuntu) => qtbase-opensource-src
(Ubuntu)

Bug description:
A few times recently when unity8 got into xenial-proposed for
migration, unity-scope-click's autopkgtest failed on the first run,
  having passed on the next:

This delays migration until someone notices the failure and asks for a
  re-run, which usually passes.
