If Ruben's speech is added to LibrePlanet's LibreConf2013 page as an 'unofficial release', it might set things rolling. This is a good idea, I'll do it now.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Prolems with the TOR Browser
Are you running the tor browser bundle, or the tor package that comes with Trisquel? If you have the tor package from Trisquel, you should remove it and download the browser bundle from the tor-project website. Generally, it is advised to use the bundle from the tor-project website rather than what comes from the Linux distors. Best, Stefano

Re: [Trisquel-users] Why did you switch (or use) Free Software?
Unfortunately it is kind of hard to remove Gnome. I didn't find a better solution than removing all packages by hand. KDE has a nice GUI front-end for package management, Apper. You can make it show all packages that are included in the Gnome desktop, then apply a filter of only installed packages.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why did you switch (or use) Free Software?
Initially I just wanted to escape Windows in some way or form. I heard about Linux like everyone else of course, so that was naturally the first thing to try, as it didn't cost my anything. I formatted the drive and installed Suse 10. Too many things didn't work and I couldn't make them work. Installing software didn't work too (I didn't knew what to make with the sourcecode tarballs I downloaded). After a week Windows came back to my harddrive and I concluded, that I need someone to help me make the switch. After some time I found out about Ubuntu and how it was supposed to be easy on beginners. I went to a pretty cool project, called linuxpaten (or linuxgodfathers in English). People who considered themselves profficient enough were assigned to beginners like me and helped out, personally, over chat. After I learned how everything works, GNU/Linux became my favorite OS. After some distro hopping, Ubuntu became my then-final choice, mostly because it had reasonably new packages and lots of projects not involved with Ubuntu directly made pre-packaged versions for Ubuntu. That was also the time where I got interested in the history of the operating system I was using. Youtube spit out many videos of Torvalds holding speeches, but also a video called Richard Stallman, father of all things that are Linux. Of course I had no idea about who Stallman actually was and was thrilled to find out, that his contribution to the creation of the operating system was at least as big, probably even bigger than that of Torvalds. Once I read up more on RMS and GNU I started to really like his philosophy and his stance on freedom in the world of software. Besides programming I've got a lot of fields of interest, one of them is philosophy. I even studied philosophy at a university, besides other things. Stallman, in my opinion, is the greatest thinker of our time. He is one of those people who revolutionize the way we think about ourselves. The last revolution of such magnitude might very well have been the invention of human rights. Stallman invented user rights. As with human rights, the idea is alien at first and hard to adopt. For many people it seems unrealistic, that the mighty ones would give up even a portion of their power for something they don't even believe in. As with human rights, the situation of normal people, the public, would improve. Once I started seeing things this way, it was just a question of time before I found Trisquel and started using it, since it is one of the biggest (if not the biggest and most popular) distribution on the FSFs list of approved distros. And it is based on Ubuntu, the distro I would have used if I never found out about Richard Stallman, the GNU project and the freedom issues!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Running latest version of KDE
Ubuntu repos can be used, but there might be an occasional non-free package. There are main, restricted and universe, multiverse repos. Main and restricted, according to the licensing policy, are the closest thing to fully free software. Here is a link to their policy about including software in the repos. Universe and Multiverse repos will contain non-free software, because to be included there packages does not have to meet any condition from the licensing policy at all!
Re: [Trisquel-users] StatusNet, Identi.ca, and another blow to the AGPL
I found this lengthy article on the subject: https://lwn.net/Articles/544347/ I agree that ultimately, Identi.ca just felt like a Twitter clone. Although it's free and federated, I didn't feel it reached it's potential because there was only one site to sign up to. Start my own server? Not an option financially for me, atm, and I don't know of any free-to-join alternatives. OStatus is great, but isn't setting a huge example yet. Pump.io doesn't seem like a step backward to me. Sounds to me like a new chapter in future OStatus history, because the more OStatus experiments out there, the better. The backslide to Apache is disappointing, since AGPL clearly protects your freedom on a server much more effectively, but I guess you have to accept SOME non-GNU licenses online or you'll hardly use anything (for now). I'm more interested in this off-hand reference to free Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) provider[s] AppFog and OpenShift. Is it actually possible for someone to set up their own social networking instance while hardly paying a cent? If Pump.io accounts will eventually be run by individuals on their own free servers, I see the future of federated social networking being very interesting, and if I could set up my own StatusNet instance right now completely gratis, I may just jump on the chance.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Prolems with the TOR Browser
I don't do that for the Tor Browser Bundle. I just download their tar.gz,[1] put it in my home folder, and run it (well, I create a menu icon and use that). It's much easier. [1] https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en

Re: [Trisquel-users] What is stability?
It may be the discs. Usually the best discs to use are CD-R discs. It may be the drive is having more of an issue reading the disc. It might be scratched, etc. or just this drive doesn't like this disc. Some types of discs can be more problematic. I believe its due to the lasers inside or lack thereof. I'd probably burn a new copy on a CD-R medium and verify the disc. What ISO did you actually burn? I believe we have used this one on the Gentoo: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/7.0.0/amd64/iso-cd/debian-7.0.0-amd64-kde-CD-1.iso I might suggest using this one though: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/debian-live-7.0.0-amd64-gnome-desktop.iso It is a live version of Debian you can run from CD. That said this thread may not be appropriate for this forum given Debian's not Trisquel and it's not FSF-complaint either. Parabola GNU/Linux is probably OK here although distributions that include non-free software are certainly not OK here. Consider contacting support at thinkpenguin or maybe getting on the Debian forum/mailing list/etc.
[Trisquel-users] Its here: Final Thesis - H-node
Hi everyone. I wrote you some time ago about my final thesis which was practically done back then and was waiting for an approval from my school. Well, I got a word today that it has been approved and can now be accessed from my school's thesis database. Permanent link to my final thesis: http://www.urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:amk-2013052911642 Old thread about the thesis: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/final-thesis-h-node My instructor gave my thesis a grade of 5 which is the best one available. No need to say that I am pleased. However, my instructor is not by any means an expert when it comes to free software or free software compatible hardware so I would like to hear what you guys think of my work. The work is released under CC BY-ND 3.0 license. I am planning on releasing another version (with added fixes should there be need for any) under GFDL and introducing it to the FSF*s later. Now, I'll go and pour myself a nice cup of tea.

I've heard about lots of programs made specifically for professional musicians, but how good are those?
Re: [Trisquel-users] LibreJS chrashes Abrowser
I don't know much about noscript. Does it disable Javascript completely except on the sites of my whitelist? I don't know much about LibreJS either, but I thought it has some kind of recognition function for proprietary javascript and does not disable all scripts by default, but I may be wrong. I'm afraid of many essential sites being completely unusable due to the lack of javascript, but I will try out. Thank you!
[Trisquel-users] Re : Running latest version of KDE
Here is a PPA providing KDE 4.10. You want the precise serie because Trisquel 6.0 Toutatis is based upon Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin. As Cyberhawk points out, you are on your own to check whether the software provided through this PPA is free (and notice that proprietary software might be added to it later!). That is the problem with using software repository outside Trisquel's control. The people ruling the repository may not be as concerned with freedoms as the Trisquel project...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Running latest version of KDE
Universe packages are free software that are not officially supported and restricted packages are obviously non-free: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommened low end laptop
Ah, yeah, sorry.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommened low end laptop
You can get a cheap netbook that is supported by Trisquel. You can find such models using h-node and you can test Trisquel in a shop (that's what I did). Note that a model might be listed as supported but might be sold with different parts, so it is best to test it before buying.

Re: [Trisquel-users] LibreJS chrashes Abrowser
Yes to your first question. By default (after you clean out the whitelist), JS is disabled everywhere. Then you gradually build your whitelist back up, for your banking sites and other mission-critical browsing ... Simplest and easiest way to do so is hovering the small NoScript button that installs at the very bottom of the browser. It's an effort at first, but very well worth it IMHO.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Its here: Final Thesis - H-node
Wow, Matti! I will read your thesis through (I'm Finnish) when I will have enough time. Re: [Trisquel-users] LibreJS chrashes Abrowser
LibreJS tries to find out what scripts are nonfree and non-trivial, but it relies on a comment format that in practice is rarely used. The result is that it just tends to block everything that it doesn't consider non-trivial (which is most scripts) unless the website it's from is on LibreJS's whitelist. Yes, by default NoScript disables all Javascript that isn't coming from websites on your whitelist. Also much nicer about NoScript than LibreJS is that its whitelist is based on what website the script comes from rather than what website you're visiting, so it's much easier to control than LibreJS. Also, NoScript allows you to temporarily allow scripts from a domain (or temporarily allow all scripts used on the page you're currently visiting) and then revoke those permissions at any time.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommened low end laptop
It is very difficult to find free software compatible hardware, one that runs with fully free distros like Trisquel. If laptops from thinkpenguin are too expensive for you, here are some clues too look for: The machine actually boots with Trisquel (some motherboards make problems because of their ACPI). Intel GMA graphics. 4xxx series works well. The WiFi should be from Atheros (if you intend on using wireless LAN). Best possible way to know if all the hardware works, is to boot the machine with a live-usb stick. To check 3D support: install the package mesa-utils on your live-stick beforehand. Run glxgears from the terminal on the booted machine. If you see 3D gears turning, with an fps rate same as the refresh rate of the monitor (should be 60 or 75 Hz), you can be assured there is 3D support and you will be able to use the compiz effects for rendering the desktop (makes it easier on the CPU and speeds up the animations of all windows etc.). To see if the WiFi is supported, make sure you turned the W-LAN feature on (some laptops have a switch for that. Sometimes it is the same switch as for the Bluetooth). Then you should see a wireless icon in the tray. Click on it, search for networks. There should be some nearby. Accessing them will probably be impossible because of security features, but at this point you can be assured the wireless chip is working.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommened low end laptop
Intel GMA is an old integrated graphics line from Intel. Their current integrated graphics is Intel HD, and it's just as good in terms of compatibility (presumably better in terms of performance).

Re: [Trisquel-users] LibreJS chrashes Abrowser
I didn't expect the situation being this bad I think noscript is not a very good solution, because I only can choose between I want to use this site because I need it and I don't want to use this site because I don't need it. With this, I never know whether I'm running proprietary javascript or not. I only can decide whether I need the site so badly so it's worth the risk. So I think noscript improves the situation but doesn't make it acceptable. Would be good if libreJS improves and becomes usable ...

Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommened low end laptop
The Intel HD is a lot better. Any of the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation G2 CPUs with Intel HD graphics is what I would advise. Then get an Atheros wireless chip. AR9285 is a good choice. I would suggest holding off if you can though (to the person who created this thread). It's a hard thing to do although the more money that hits the companies which are working against free software the harder it is to move forward on the free software front. The systems we have now are not completely free as it is- they are merely compatible with 100% free distributions. There is a long ways to go before a completely free system is made readily available.
[Trisquel-users] ath9k_htc WiFi Update
A follow up to: https://www.fsf.org/news/ryf-certification-thinkpenguin-usb-with-atheros-chip Just to let you know that the kernel for Trisquel 6 now includes the ability to load the firmware needed for these devices so you no longer need to install a different kernel. Both Trisquel version 3.2 and 3.5 kernels have this support. You may need to go and apply a kernel update via your package manager to get this, and if you're using a mirror it may be a day or two before the mirrors have copies of the updated kernel so you may not see an updated package just yet. (So if you're using my kernel please feel free to move back to the Trisquel kernel if you want.) The firmware itself is still needed and I have pre-compiled .fw files available for download at http://jxself.org/ath9k-htc/ (drop them into /lib/firmware) but eventually that won't be necessary either once it gets packaged and included in the Trisquel repositories.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommened low end laptop

Re: [Trisquel-users] How can I install Unity ?

Re: [Trisquel-users] How can I install Unity ?
I think you need to install gnome-session, too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] LibreJS chrashes Abrowser
Part of the problem is technical, part of it is social. The social part is that a lot of webmasters just don't think about it: they don't give their scripts any license and often don't provide the source code either. The technical part is there is no easy way to tell automatically if any program is free. This isn't a problem for most programs because a human needs to manage the repo of a GNU/Linux distro or a catalog of free software, but for Javascript, there are just so many scripts, and they are frequently used transparently. So yeah, NoScript is definitely not the best solution, and LibreJS doesn't really do much better (the only improvement is that it gives is helping you actually look at the Javascript files, but even that is not very useful because LibreJS doesn't let you choose specifically what scripts to execute; your override is either all or nothing). Actually, come to think of it, why didn't LibreJS just fork NoScript, take away the other security features it has, and add the license and script triviality detection and change the default whitelist? Then it would have all the stuff NoScript has, including not introducing errors into pages, plus extra.

A high resolution matte screen. Not just 1600x900 either. It's a full 1920x1080. It is by far our highest end system to date and at a lower price point than the Penguin Emperor. As usual it works great with the latest version of Trisquel (6) and there are no non-free dependencies to worry about. There is one other feature that sets it apart from the Emperor Penguin. It's ultra ultra thin. Less than 1 thick.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Libre-software desktop
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_processors#GPU_companies The FSF should ask S3 and Matrox to join forces and develop libre graphics cards. That would give them (some of) the market share they once had. A user would buy a card from them and a Mobo from AMD (free graphics with coreboot!). Just my 2 cents.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libre-software desktop
It's a nice thought. You would have to get the number of users making conscious decisions about GNU/Linux up. As it is not enough people buy systems with GNU/Linux and even those whom do aren't buying free software friendly systems or at least enough users buying from companies which would push/demand it upstream.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommened low end laptop
Your only chance is to test the laptops in your price range before buying one, perhaps do some research on h-node first if that makes things easier. For the record, in my opinion at least, and modern Intel integrated graphics will do just fine for 3D. The only reason it wouldn't work is if you were on Windows playing modern proprietary games, which I'm sure you won't be doing. So basically, you're looking for any laptop which is cheap and has an A rank on h-node.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommened low end laptop
See some models of laptop: http://h-node.org/notebooks/catalogue/en/1/1/undef/A-platinum/undef/undef/undef/undef/undef/undef If you really need 3D acceleration you can buy any computer with Intel CPU and Intel graphics (Intel HD is better). If Wi-fi does not work you can buy one compatible USB adapter [0] - but is better if you see the wifi card chipset of laptop before. Re: [Trisquel-users] Penguin GNU / Linux Laptop /w 1920x1080 Matte Screen Now Shipping
That is a great looking laptop! The price is really nice as well. I think when I finally do buy a laptop this will be the one I go with. It's very classy! Nice work Chris!

Excellent stuff Chris! I wish you all the success you can get with this model. I may even buy one myself eventually.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Alternative Themes
Why didn't Ruben make Adwaita the default theme? Looks much more aesthetically pleasing. That grey task-bar might initially turn a few people off.
[Trisquel-users] Should the FSF financially support Trisquel?
As I understand it, the FSF sponsors gNewSense (which I guess is because of rms's dependency on the MIPS architecture). But do you think the FSF should sponsor Trisquel? They distribute it on their USB cards to new members, and it is the distro that the FSF uses on their own computers. It would give Ruben a nice boost in financial security, and most importantly , the long-term security of the distribution. The need for a fully free Ubuntu replacement has never been stronger. Installing a user and freedom friendly GNU/Linux system like Trisquel is one of the best things you can do to guarantee control over your own computing. I think that if the FSF could sponsor Trisquel, they would be doing a tremendous service to free software adoption. What do you think?
