Re: [Trisquel-users] TRISQUE MIGHT HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED

2013-08-19 Thread kgnaorvs

I don't want to jump in the discussion, but I just want to say this:

Only an obscene person will condemn obscenity. For example
children accept swearing as a natural language, but adults condemn it because
their own obscenity is greater than that of children. The jovial
man-about-town with a stock of obscene stories will sternly reprove his son
for talking about excrement. The untruthful mother will spank her child for
lying. I have seen a man, with pipe in mouth, whipping his son for smoking. I
have heard a man say as he hit his son of twelve, I'll teach you to swear,
you little bastard. When I remonstrated, he said glibly, It's different
when I curse. He’s just a kid.

So, I guess, to start to talk about one's obscene things and condemn it,
means mental offtopic, not formal offtopic.

Some people changes their values in time, some not. We write a text messages
here; so, even if one said rude words sometimes, however, after while he/she
may already forget what he said (but the messages with obscene words are
still availabe to see, and not available to edit). But maybe that's not so
important thing to pay your attention at? If you start to condemn it, then
you fix the interest over it, and pass the actual problems.

You won't find help installing the non-free repos from Ubuntu on this forum.
It is possible to do, but Trisquel is intended to be an entirely free distro.
If you're going to use non-free repos, you might as well just install Ubuntu.

Your intel graphics will work fine under free software, and you can also play
mp3s with no need to install any proprietary stuff. (Although mp3 is a
patent-encumbered format, there are free software programs that can play it).

As for the WIFI, I'd suggest that you obtain a wifi dongle that will work in

So for all out there that need to get it working on trisquel (in my case a

type in terminal as root (or sudo the commands):
lsusb -v | less

Get the vendor and product ID from the result of the above command.

Like: Bus 003 Device 003: ID 12d1:1505 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E398
LTE/UMTS/GSM Modem/Networkcard

Note the two references after ID (12d1 and 1505)

Now append this line in /etc/modules:
usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1505

(to edit type nano /etc/modules as root, add the lines, hit ctrl+o to write
the file (save) and ctrl+x to close nano.)

Reboot your computer and your done.
Set up a new mobile broadband connection and your online! ;-)

Greetings 2 all.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't Install/Boot Trisquel

2013-08-19 Thread ken
I can now report complete success! Thank to your help and some
experimentation (and lots of reinstalls), I finally nailed down exactly what
I needed to do in order to get Trisquel to install and boot on my system with
no problems.

1. Boot up Live CD. Try Trisquel without Installing, with the F6 acpi=off
option enabled.

2. Use System Settings - GParted to partition and format a logical partition
for Trisquel.

3. Install Trisquel to this partition, with no separate /boot or /home
partitions.

4. Before rebooting, root the new Trisquel file system as described here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/145241/how-do-i-run-update-grub-from-a-livecd.

5. Update Trisquel's GRUB file in the terminal with sudo nano
/etc/default/grub. Add acpi=off to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX, save and close, and
update grub with sudo update-grub.

6. Unmount Trisquel's file system and reboot into the new Trisquel
installation.

7. Run System Settings - Update Manager and reboot as instructed.

8. After rebooting, run System Settings - Synaptic Manager and install
linux-generic-lts-belenos. Update GRUB. Reboot and ensure that that the
GRUB Menu indicates that Trisquel is now using the 3.5 kernel (I did this
mostly to make sure that when I updated to the latest kernel, I would
actually boot into it).

7. Log in to Trisquel, and follow the instructions at
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/update-linux-libre-kernel; to update to the
latest kernel.

8. IMPORTANT: Re-edit the GRUB file and REMOVE acpi=off. I found that, even
after updating my linux kernel, if I still ran with acpi=off, Trisquel would
boot into Fallback mode with the VESA driver, severely distoring my display.

9. Update GRUB again, then reboot.

10. Enjoy a fully functional, booting, updated and properly-dsiplaying
Trisquel 6.0 system!

If you are talking about the non-free program Final Draft, then they aren't
really endorsing it and more of a way to get the font to work with it if
needed or to use this libre font instead of the non-free one with the
program. Isn't this the same as people trying to help Windows users by
suggesting free software for their Windows operating system.

Yes, its true that their main domain may suggest a non-free program, but this
specific URL is focused on and only talks about the libre font. I generally
think you have good suggestions for fonts, but I think you are stepping out
of line and trying to start a fight.

You are in a way trying to push people away from an excellent free font
because you have some weird focus on their main homepage. Why don't you just
calm down and let people download the font? The users on this forum are smart
enough to click a download button and are not enticed by non-free software.

Btw the direct link to the font is

Boot up Live system. Try Trisquel without Installing, with the F6

Install Trisquel (the default partitioning scheme is OK).
Once the installation over, make sure you have an Internet connection (plug
an Ethernet cable if necessary) and chroot into the new Trisquel system as
described here (until the chroot command):
http://askubuntu.com/questions/145241/how-do-i-run-update-grub-from-a-livecd
echo http://linux-libre.fsfla.org/pub/linux-libre/freesh/ freesh main |

sudo apt-key add archive-key.asc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-libre64 (linux-libre32 if the 32 bit system was

sudo update-grub
Reboot and enjoy!

We will not help you install non-free software here, including drivers. If
you absolutely need/want to use these drivers, there are plenty of other

The 'firmware missing' issue that you're having is because your wi-fi card
requires non-free firmware to operate. Our solution is buying an
Atheros-based wi-fi card (you can find these on http://libre.thinkpenguin.com
). However, there might be another solution, and that is to use OpenFWWF (it
looks like it supports your wi-fi card). This is a free software firmware.

2013-08-19 Thread holger . beetz
I played around with the updated version a bit and like several of the maps.
The music so far sounded nice and well matching.

Things I would consider:
- Crossbow with no shooting sound (may be experiment with the soundfile I
provided you). Crossbows are neither inaudible, nor is a silent crossbow
realistic. For the crossbow part there is also a nice model for assault cube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apHfzJfMiic
http://www.moddb.com/games/cube/addons/crossbow

May be as alternative for the ancient crossbow ?

- War axe has swinging sound but swords not. I would try to be consistent. A
war axe does not make more or less sound than a sword. Would be cool if you
added swinging sound to the swords as well.

- Complexity of models and / or physical model puts huge stress to the
Xonotic engine. Even with 4x3 GHz and a GeForce 650 I experienced slowdowns
to something like 20 FPS without having graphics maxed out *OUCH*

- Font issue: As pointed out before the diablo-like font makes it hard to
read a lot of menu entries which is really bad since there are tons of
parameters (e.g. for the foliant mutator). How can one modificate something
he can't read ?

With some more polish work I think that this mod has potential. The swords
and crossbow remind me of Chaos Quake which I loved to play back in the Q2
day.

Also there aren't that many mods out there for Xonotic or other free FPS.

I love the idea of YaCy, and have an instance installed on my server, but to
be honest the search results are crap and it's painfully slow. Also the user
interface is pretty terrible.

However, if enough people start using it then that could all change. It just
needs some publicity to get off the ground, and improved user-friendliness.

It's strange that that condition is in the license when it is so easily
rendered useless.

I used gconf-editor, but it did not come with my system so I had to install
it via Synaptic. When I checked, compositing was already enabled, probably
due to my 'metacity -c' earlier, despite warning.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Non-free drivers, mp3, gnome or lxde

2013-08-19 Thread adel . afzal
You understand why we don't help with non-free software/drivers on this forum
right? We're not doing it to be mean ... we're doing it because we care
about others.

Sometimes we assume that people understand why free vs non-free matters.

If you use proprietary software, your computer could be informing on you. One
problem with proprietary software is that users cannot know what it does,
beyond what's superficial.

The company that made it may assure you it respects privacy. You could take
their word for it. Or you could use free software.

Free software is about certain freedoms; not price. Part of what it means to
be free is that users can get full disclosure of the instructions that make
up the program. This requirement for transparency means that people can audit
it, and alert others to intrusive features.

There are other reasons. If you want, we'll gladly link you to a written
explanation or a video of someone talking about it.

There is an easy and a hard way to do this. The hard way, which will install
the fonts system wide, is to type sudo nautilus into the terminal, enter the
root password, and drag the font files you want to install into
/usr/share/fonts. The easy way is to install Font Manager from Add/Remove
Applications, click the button with three gears on it in the bottom left
corner, click Install Fonts, find the font files you need in the file browser
that appears, and click OK.

Now my panel reliably disappears, but it is actually still functional if I
mouse over where the items are. The applications menu will appear, it's just
that the bar has gone completely invisible.

[Trisquel-users] Data Disc and Rhythmbox

2013-08-19 Thread ken

I have two questions that I think might be related.

First, I have a HDD on which I store all of my data--my pictures, videos,
music, and the like. I'd like for this drive to be automatically mounted when
I boot Trisquel, and right now I've got it being mounted through a startup
program command. In my other OS, I was able to go into the disc management
and click a box to mount the drive automatically at startup. Is there any
easier way in Trisquel to automatically mount a drive at startup than what
I'm already using?

Second, my music is on that drive. When I first got Trisquel working, I
loaded all of my music into Rhythmbox and played a few songs to make sure it
worked. I had no trouble. Since then, even after a reboot, any time I try to
play a song in Rhythmbox, nothing happens--no sound, but the slider doesn't
even move. It simply does not play. Rhythmbox isn't frozen, as I can select
other songs (with the same result), open and close menus, etc. But it won't
play anything.

Could it be because I have my music on a drive that is being mounted slightly
after startup? Or is there another reason why it wouldn't' work?

It also appears I can't play any of my movies or music in Movie Player,
either.

Re: [Trisquel-users] A libre Courier font saved my rush

2013-08-19 Thread tegskywalker
So basically if you copy the fonts into /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ it will be
systemwide, but if they are placed in the hidden .fonts folder in the user's
home directory, that will be for that user only.

Then you follow with sudo fc-cache -fv in the terminal and hit enter. I
actually run this twice just in case the first one gives me an invalid font
cache message.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Data Disc and Rhythmbox

2013-08-19 Thread magicbanana
As for the first question, you just need to append to /etc/fstab, one
additional line per partition on your hard drive. The whole specification can
be read with the following command:

$ man fstab
Of course, editing /etc/fstab requires administrative privileges, hence
'sudo'.

As for the second question, have you actually made a lot of customization to
you session? If not, you can simply remove the configurations files in your
home folder. That will bring back the default configuration.

Feel free to ask for precisions.

I can 2nd gandi.net. We actually ran into security issues with dotster.
Though I'd still suggest dotster over godaddy any day. Fortunately we
transfered to gandi.net the important domains years ago. gandi.net doesn't
just give access to your domain/account to anybody (I can vouch for that as
we ran into the same security issue with them and they repelled said
attackers, ie no action without a court order basically, was there response
to said attacker).

Thanks for the suggestions. Currently I use Dreamhost but I'm wondering if

are probably being scrutinized closely.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Domain Name Registration

2013-08-19 Thread chris
It really depends on the type of content your hosting, who your enemy is,
etc.

Some content is better off hosted in Russia under a .ru domain whereas other
types of content is better off hosted in the US.

As an example if your trying to promote hate/Nazi memorabilia/white
supremacist stuff/holocaust denial/etc kind of stuff the US is the perfect
place for it.

If your trying to distribute software cracks, cracking materials, certain
types of pornographic/or nearly pornographic materials, music/video/piracy
related materials, and similar Russia may be a good place to host it-or one
of the other countries with close ties (particularly those pre-1990).

If your trying to post materials that blemish a western government it may be
best to post them on a .onion site or leak them via Tor to the media.

If your posting materials that no governments anywhere will accept (there
isn't much out there you can't find some government somewhere willing to
accept it in some form or another) a .onion site is the way to go.

There have been attacks on Tor/.onion sites/major .onion hosts recently.
However, if your extremely tech savvy, AND paranoid they wouldn't have
impacted you. Anybody who was following the advice of the Tor project would
have had an updated version of the Tor Browser Bundle. They would have been
unaffected. Anybody who was paranoid would have been on a system setup such
that it would have prevented the attack on even the older impacted version of
the Tor Browser Bundle should the Tor Browser Bundle not been patched at the
time of the attack.

I have yet to see an attack on the Tor Browser Bundle which would have worked
on any secure environments which included Tor that I've setup. I'm pretty
uninteresting though as far as the NSA/FBI/etc go. Unless that is they start
attacking free software/Tor itself/etc.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Domain Name Registration

2013-08-19 Thread chris
You probably won't have a problem no matter who you choose. The issue people
would generally have here is supporting companies that are hostile to user
freedoms/users in other ways/ or otherwise roll over to government/corporate
intimidation. Every .com, .net, and .org domain amongst others is controlled
indirectly by the US government. It doesn't matter if your using gandi.net (a
French company) or a US registrar if your domain is .com, .net, or .org
(amongst others). I think Gandi.net is better at protecting users from other
non-governmental and non-corporate entities. Where you host probably doesn't
matter much either because of the nature of the internet. Your mail is going
to end up on thousands of different machines scattered around the world.

Hosting it yourself does appear to offer some legal protections in the United
States. Difficult to do though. I'd suggest reading up on privacy issues at
the eff.org website.
