Re: [Trisquel-users] DVD Playback Problem: How Do I Configure the Buffer?
On 21/08/2013 06:17 AM, vir...@hotmail.com wrote: I've been watching DVDs using Trisquel a whole lot lately. I'm using Totem (and sometimes other players) to play them back, and I've noticed if I ever pause or rewind, my optical drive spins down and doesn't start back up again until playback reaches the end of the buffer. This causes playback to freeze for a few seconds, and then it jumps ahead a few seconds requiring me to rewind to catch what I missed. It doesn't make things unwatchable, but it results in not-very-good performance. Has anyone else run into this problem? Are there settings somewhere I can tweak to see if I can mitigate it? Well I use smplayer to watch videos and it has cache settings which you can increase that might help.

Re: [Trisquel-users] DVD Playback Problem: How Do I Configure the Buffer?
@lembas: what is the point in replying when one has nothing to reply ? ;) /me seriously asking... @EricxDu: totem does not exactly have the best reputation as media player. I also usually use either SMPlayer or VLC. They both provide sufficient buffering to get a got experience when playing back files from optical media. Be it DVDs or HD stuff burned to BDs. Sometimes though the optical drive and / or the media might have issues with quick spin up time. Even when using a standalone DVD player on the cheap models there is often a small hickup when you have paused the video and restart it. I do not know if you have any special options to finetune the behaviour of VLC / SMPlayer in regard of buffering / read ahead. HTH, Holger
Re: [Trisquel-users] XMPP or SIP Account
I'd like to point out that there aren't any data retention laws in the US and most data retention is volintary. So while a US based ISP/email provider/etc may be forced to hand over logs that exist a privacy respecting ISP/email provider/etc may not actually have any. Europe on the other hand is very risky in that regard. I'm not familiar with Switzerland and there data retention laws. The US doesn't force companies to protect your privacy either though. So a company like Google IS going to sell that data even if a company like Duck Duck Go isn't. RMS also pointed out that you should avoid conducting searches with the same provider you use for email/calendaring/etc. I suppose nobody actually thought using Google was a good idea... however did anybody thing that maybe using Duck Duck Go may be less than perfect too? While I may have more faith in one than the other I'm pretty sure there are other options out there that I'd trust as much as or more than Duck Duck Go for email/sip/xmpp.

ok thanks, i'm going to try that as soon as i get home.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel blocking ALL flash videos and ads
@zRokh: The more complete explanation behind this: As free system Trisquel does not support non-free software such as Adobe Flash. The installed free replacement Gnash has limited support for Flash stuff embedded in websites. Replacements such as Grease Monkey plus ViewTube help but are not always provide the same experience as Flash does. @skilo: No offense but posting one-line replies to those who are new to Trisquel and its whole free open eco-system is NOT helpful.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Assault cube and sauerbraten
If the applications you mention are truly free, then it's probably as simple as: no one has put them into a repo that Trisquel's repos are mirroring. As far as I can tell, Trisquel's repos are a modified mirror of the Ubuntu repos, which may in turn be a mirror of Debian's. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the process of getting an application included in an upstream repository.

Thanks, sachin, for the suggestion of SMPlayer. I've looked for such options in Totem and don't think there are any at all. Darksoul71: thanks for the info and two reasons I might be having this problem. I'll definitely give SMPlayer and/or VLC a go, and see if my optical drive has slow spinup and still causes issues. I suppose Trisquel includes Totem by default because it's the Gnome standard app, so any shortcomings it may have is why we have choices available.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Assault cube and sauerbraten
Trisquel has a free culture standard, too, and AssaultCube doesn't fit that standard. Many of the art assets are under proprietary licenses. It doesn't really matter; the AssaultCube in Ubuntu's repos is years out-of-date, so you aren't able to connect with many people. I don't know about Sauerbraten. Also note that Ubuntu has multiple repositories, and Trisquel only pulls from the main one (I think Universe is the one Trisquel pulls from and the other one is called Contrib or something, but I'm not sure; not familiar with Ubuntu's repos).

Re: [Trisquel-users] DVD Playback Problem: How Do I Configure the Buffer?
I just did a quick check and realized that MPlayer (which SMPlayer is a front-end to) and VLC don't depend on the GStreamer plugin, which is what Totem is based on. Perhaps GStreamer is what doesn't buffer well (and perhaps that's what I should try to configure if I wanted to continue using Totem).
[Trisquel-users] Re : CD isn't detected in Media
The ISO should be automatically mounted in a subdirectory of /media.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DVD Playback Problem: How Do I Configure the Buffer?
AFAIK GStreamer is a multimedia framework / backend to make developing AV applications easier. Both mplayer and VLC share libav for decoding videos. I just mentioned that totem does not exactly have a good reputation because I have seen several complaints in various message boards about different issues (stuttering, async audio video and so on). It also never worked to my full convenvience. Especially HD stuff usually stutters in Totem for me.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lib-Ray (A free and open high-definition video standard for fixed media: no DRM, no region codes, no secrets... No limits!)
Lib-Ray seems to be a good alternative for those who want to produce HD content. For the consumer site I still both fail to see good support in at least some applications (e.g. XBMC) and good reasons to use Lib-ray instead of (lets say) a MP4 / MKV contrainer with identical codecs (if one likes to stay free of propritary codecs like h264, MP3 and the alike). Personally I will stay with h264 / AC3 because this is what all / most of my playback devices support.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lib-Ray (A free and open high-definition video standard for fixed media: no DRM, no region codes, no secrets... No limits!)
h.264 is patented, not proprietary, and MP3 is patented, too (and it's an audio format, not a video format). The major non-patented, non-secret formats are the Ogg formats (usually Ogg Theora/Vorbis), Matroska, and WebM.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lib-Ray (A free and open high-definition video standard for fixed media: no DRM, no region codes, no secrets... No limits!)
@opon4: Thanks for clarification ! Patented is the right term. Sorry for choosing the wrong word. But in the end this does not change much the mayor point of my posting :) There are open free options like Opus, FLAC, the Ogg stuff but they usually lack support throughout the available devices. Example: If I give away a movie of my litte one to my parents, they can easily play back a file using patented formats / codecs (1080p in MP4 container using h264 and AAC) in their DVB-S2 receiver with external HDD while they could never play back a 1080p MKV file with VP8 for video and FLAC for audio.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lib-Ray (A free and open high-definition video standard for fixed media: no DRM, no region codes, no secrets... No limits!)
Oh yeah...and a small follow up: Why did you write that MP3 is not a video format ? I was purely speaking about codecs which include audio as well as video :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lib-Ray (A free and open high-definition video standard for fixed media: no DRM, no region codes, no secrets... No limits!)
It sounded like you were suggesting that MP3 was a non-patented alternative to h.264, which isn't true. They're both patented, and serve different purposes.

Keep in mind that predicting the future is haphazard at this point. We are waiting for Intel's finalization of some of the Haswell lineup. In regards to the coreboot question. Porting coreboot is a non-trivial project and a big one at that. We have more expertise in-house now that may be able to do it eventually although I don't foresee porting coreboot to any system in the near future. The task is just huge and we need to grow the company to a point where it'll actually be able to do this and more, and still have it be worthwhile (ie repeatable). If we start such a project it'll be many many months from now. It probably wouldn't happen with the current generation. I think our next focus will be a new router. A smaller project that has a much higher chance of success. All the major features of the the laptop will work with Trisquel 6- obviously. As usual 25% of the profits will go the Trisquel project if you use libre.thinkpenguin.com to order or mention it in an email/phone order.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Assault cube and sauerbraten
The FSF deals with software. RMS's opinion on artistic works is that they only need to be freely sharable to be ethical (although letting people modify them is a plus).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Assault cube and sauerbraten
I don't know any free distro with a free culture standard that implies removing artistic/opinion works with licenses preventing modification. (Debian has such an approach and requires a source for such works in some more cases.) The problem with data licensing of these games is that they forbid commercial use. FSF allows nonmodifiable data of this kind [0] in distros, I don't remember any such case other than essays in GNU documentation. Some specific packages from Ubuntu's Multiverse repo are included in Trisquel, they are there for patent reasons. Re: [Trisquel-users] Assault cube and sauerbraten
If you want to try it, first you need to install some compatible Doom source port. The best, and most advanced one out there is called Zandronum. You can find instructions on how to install it on Trisquel here. Then you'll need some Doom IWAD file(s), which you can copy either from your instance Doom (if you have one), or you can just use the shareware one from here. I does not tested any of the unofficial ones, like FreeDoom (available right from Trisquel repositories), but maybe they will work (with the Brutal Doom mod of course). Here are the MD5 sums of the official IWADs, all patched to latest versions: Shareware: f0cefca49926d00903cf57551d901abe DOOM1.WAD Full version: 25e1459ca71d321525f84628f45ca8cd DOOM2.WAD c4fe9fd920207691a9f493668e0a2083 DOOM.WAD 3493be7e1e2588bc9c8b31eab2587a04 PLUTONIA.WAD 1d39e405bf6ee3df69a8d2646c8d5c49 TNT.WAD Last, but not least, you need to download Brutal Doom, which is basically a gore mod for the classic Doom, released back in 1993. You can find it here. You should also download some more enhancement packs (look for question numbered by six, in FAQ), mainly the Doom Metal Soundtrack Mod (this doesn't wanted to work for me, but you should give it a try yourself anyway), which will improve the music from those 8-bit MIDI sound, to high/CDDA quality PCM recordings. Here you can find a review of Brutal Doom to get an idea of what it's about. Hope this helps.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Assault cube and sauerbraten
Those are data files, consisting of no code. Free software is all about the code, and nothing else. These things have nothing to do with software freedom, but is nice to have a game with both code and data released under a liberal license.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Assault cube and sauerbraten
There's differing opinions on this. The FSF's position is that non-functional data only needs to be sharable, but some people think that all culture must be free. Personally, I think that all culture must be free, but I don't think it's an urgent enough issue for me to refuse nonfree cultural works, and if copyright was abolished, which it should be, all nonfree cultural works would instantly become free. For me, the difference with free software is it is controlling what is happening on my computer, and I need to control my computing now. Still, I prefer free culture over nonfree culture, so e.g. Freedoom is preferred over Doom and Xonotic is preferred over AssaultCube, in an ethical sense (for the record, I do play AssaultCube, partly because I don't know of a similar free FPS with free art assets and partly because it's popular, so it's easy to play an online game of it).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Playing video freezes my netbook!
You were right about VLC working well, but things like Minitube still freeze my computer.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Playing video freezes my netbook!
Unfortunately, there was nothing in my BIOS to turn off the NVIDIA chipset. I am pretty sure if I could do that, the system would use my Intel integrated hardware and I'd have a better time.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New thinkpenguin laptop
Chris, is possible to sell free software friendly laptop with 32GB of RAM like Alienware? And desktop with 64GB of RAM?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Playing video freezes my netbook!
According to a site I found about Ubuntu on the same netbook, you have to switch chipsets via a ACPI call. There is a package on the site to do such a thing, but I do not know if it is Libre. Apparently, you have to send the ACPI call every time before you reboot since the NVIDIA default is hard-wired into the board. It is frustrating that people like NVIDIA considering how Freedom-hostile they are. This includes the Linux users who do not care about Freedom. If ALL users of GNU+Linux refused non-Free hardware, NVIDIA would have a lot fewer customers. I have just read that there is a manual way to do the ACPI call with a GPLv3 module available at this site https://github.com/mkottman/acpi_call so I will look into that as well.

Re: [Trisquel-users] New thinkpenguin laptop
I'm curious which scenario needs so much ram, especially on trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New thinkpenguin laptop
I can't imagine what 32 GB of RAM could be used for. My Mac mini is plenty fast with 2 GB of RAM. (That's all it can address, sadly.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] New thinkpenguin laptop
What's the year? DDR, DDR2 or DDR3? With DDR2 you can put 4GB probably. Apple lie. Many Macbooks support 16GB of RAM but Apple say it support only 8GB.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New thinkpenguin laptop
Here is the model: http://lowendmac.com/2006/mac-mini-early-2006/ I bought it used with 2 GB of RAM, and I upgraded the processor to a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo. The Mac mini has 2 RAM slots, the first one had a 2 GB RAM stick in it, so I tried putting a 512 MB stick in the other slot. When I pressed the power button, it didn't turn on. Removing the added stick solved the problem.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New thinkpenguin laptop
Free software friendly laptops with the standard two slots are currently limited to 16GB of ram. This may increase to 32GB if they release 16GB chips. The desktops can support at least 32GB in two slots. 64GB may be possible where there are four slots.
[Trisquel-users] Preparing Trisquel 6 for the 12.04.3 LTS Enablement Stack
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack If it goes as scheduled, Ubuntu 12.04.3 will be released on the 22nd with these three backported features of 13.04 installed by default: 1. linux-generic-lts-raring 2. xserver-xorg-lts-raring 3. libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-raring The backported xorg and libgl1 libraries are already available in the Trisquel repos, but there is no Linux Libre kernel equivalent for Trisquel yet. We currently have the 12.10 kernel (version 3.5) backported, but it would be nice to have an option to have the Raring kernel (version 3.8) backported by jxself as well. I think it would be a big benefit to offer the 3.8 kernel for Trisquel 6 to help with the longevity and sustainability of it.

Much obliged Chris, cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] New thinkpenguin laptop
There is a decent chance we will have out a 14 lightweight ultrabook model by the end of the year. Would I be correct in saying it could be something very similar to this? https://www.system76.com/laptops/model/galu1
Re: [Trisquel-users] New thinkpenguin laptop
That's strange, because I'm sure it uses DDR2; it has one 2 GB RAM stick. I may have linked to the wrong model.

Re: [Trisquel-users] New thinkpenguin laptop
You can try to put another 2GB RAM or search about this. Probably your Mac Mini support 4GB of RAM.[0] Some Macbooks and Mac Minis up to 8GB support 16GB. [1] [0] http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/ [1] http://www.gizmag.com/macbook-pro-2011-models-support-16gb-of-ram/18135/
Re: [Trisquel-users] careful with PPA
Where do the packages come from that make up the Trisquel repository? Mostly directly from Ubuntu, there's a few coming direct from Debian.org. Both of which should be fine. (You can find them on the wiki under Package Helpers) You'd mostly just have to be careful on personal launchpad PPAs. You can also install more security software to evade this problem, but it becomes difficult to simply use your computer. Tripwire AppArmour SELinux (everyone trusts who makes it) :P etc.

Wait we have plasma-widget-facebook ... sounds non-free for ethical reasons and should be removed. http://stallman.org/facebook.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lib-Ray (A free and open high-definition video standard for fixed media: no DRM, no region codes, no secrets... No limits!)
It looks like it has good potential, it already was fully funded as of last year. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2144275086/lib-ray-non-drm-open-standards-hd-video-format Nice find!

plasma-widget-facebook is free software to interact with a service most of us do not support. Anyway, it is free software.

Re: [Trisquel-users] CD isn't detected in Media
I have already checked /media, /dev/cdrom, and /mnt/cdrom. Nothing is there. If anyone can post how to detect/find the actual drive and mount it, please do. Thanks
[Trisquel-users] Re : CD isn't detected in Media
The drive should be /dev/sr0. You can take a look at the output of 'dmesg' to see what happens once you insert a CD. There may be a clue.
Re: [Trisquel-users] CD isn't detected in Media
I have tried to change to /dev/sr0 but it says that sr0 is not a directory.
