Thank you! I just discovered the movement several weeks, but I'm very
determined. I know it will be a gradual process. I discovered Trisquel at
fsf.org. I really look forward to digging into their Philosophy.

Here is the output from the terminal when trying to run Pitivi:

hi theseus,
I admire your commitment to help free software, you are past knowledge,
hopefully dome one else can help.

all I can suggest is to run pitivi from the terminal and post the message
here and in the pitivi mailing list.

Minitube is in the repositories. Just mind the privacy implications.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Applications (Pitivi 0.9 and cairo)

2013-11-24 Thread joel
Magic Banana, I started that package route and got three packages deep before
hitting a block.

I then discovered an Ubuntu repository and a wiki about Pitivi's dependencies
(http://wiki.pitivi.org/wiki/Dependencies).

I first tried adding the repository and upating my system:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gstreamer-developers/ppa && sudo apt-get update

Next, I restarted and noticed a strange behavior, i.e., the application
windows started showing on the left side of the Trisquel start menu. I
attached at the bottom of this post. Here is a direct link to it:

https://trisquel.info/files/menu-issue.png

I then went to install the other dependencies, following the instructions on
the Pitivi wiki page for Ubuntu.

# Basic build tools:
sudo apt-get install git build-essential automake libtool itstool
gtk-doc-tools gnome-common gnome-doc-utils yasm flex bison

# Stuff related to introspection, GTK, canvases, and various other
dependencies:

sudo apt-get install libgirepository1.0-dev python-dev python-gi-dev \
python-cairo-dev libcairo2-dev libgdk-pixbuf2.0-dev libpulse-dev libgtk-3-dev
\

libclutter-1.0-dev libclutter-gtk-1.0-dev

# GStreamer 1.x, if you're lucky and your distro packages are recent enough:
sudo apt-get install gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good
gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-alsa gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio \
libgstreamer-plugins-bad1.0-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-dev
libgstreamer1.0-dev libgstreamer1.0-0

# GStreamer plugins' full set of dependencies to build all the codecs:
sudo apt-get build-dep gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good
gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly

Next, I followed Pitivi's instructions for installation, i.e., to cd into the
pitivi file, configure, make, and install (http://pitivi.org/?go=download).

I was finally able to complete configuration and installation through the
terminal. However, Pitivi will not launch. When I click on the application to
launch, it tries for about 20 seconds and then crashes.

Any ideas on how to get this application to open?

Also, is there a setting to restore my Trisquel menu, so that the open
applications show on the right side of the Trisquel start menu?

Any help or ideas is appreciated.

Also, Andresm, I'm determined to get up and running on Trisquel. But perhaps,
down the road, I may try a seperate install of Parabola. I first need to get
more comfortable with the terminal.

[Trisquel-users] Avaneya Libre Game Project Releases Lost NASA Archive for Crowdfunding

2013-11-24 Thread Kip Warner
Friends,

A few years ago Trisquel was brought to my attention when my studio was
donated some MIPS hardware from Freedom Included in the United States
and Lemote from China. I was very happy to see a distribution dedicated
to promoting free software.

Now I would like to share with you a project I have been collaborating
on for a few years which I believe will one day make a wonderful
addition to Trisquel.

Avaneya is a cerebral science fiction game set on Mars currently under
active development (GPLv3). It combines the perfect blend of the
metropolis city builder social simulation, real time strategy, and
cooperative multiplayer. It explores mature themes in social justice,
politics, ecology, economics, and more.

Home:

We are pleased to announce the successful digital recovery of the first
images ever returned from the surface of Mars. Our studio recovered a
substantial amount of NASA's previously inaccessible Viking mission
data. The historic billion–dollar mission was the most ambitious in
history. Launched in 1975, it was the first to successfully reach and
photograph the surface.

More:

This ground breaking software (GPLv3), originally intended as an
internal research tool, is now available on DVD for only $15. We ship
worldwide.

Order:

Your support is essential to help make libre gaming for GNU a reality.
We need additional full time staff, including professional creative and
technical directors, musicians, artists, and engineers to supplement
the tens of thousands of hours already invested.

We will have a lot more to showcase with you over the coming weeks,
including already complete beautiful concept artwork.

Enjoy,

I'm sorry, it's just that most windows runtimes can be supplied in
linux/trisquel.

java = openjdk
flash = gnash ( maybe not though)
html5 = well, html5
.net = mono
shockwave = probaly not.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Getting someone to switch to Trisquel

I mean free software that hadn't been changed ( i.e. to change the OS of a
web browser so I could run windows executables ( free software of course ) ).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Getting someone to switch to Trisquel

2013-11-24 Thread hellocomputer8
Sorry. I meant running free software that hadn't been ported to linux yet (or
ported but left unchanged otherwise.) I guess Minitube won't work?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Getting someone to switch to Trisquel

I'm trying to mean I might add a DE every so often to the VM ( see one of my
previous posts ) so that whenever my friend hears "linux" my friend will not
think about a panel at the bottom, a "trisquel" button and a system tray.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel tablet

2013-11-24 Thread erikthorsen
I don't see why the toolchain would matter, and unless you wanna hook up a
mouse and keyboard most desktop software don't run all that well with a
touchscreen. At least Android apps are actually made for the touchscreens.

That said, I'd second the vivaldi tablet.

Strange. Your laptop does not works with 3D acceleration? I have Intel HD

Do you actually have this tablet?
How do you install Trisquel on it? With a memory stick? Then how do you get
BIOS? Can you connect a keyboard?

I assume that as it works fuly with Free software? Does the HDMI and cameras
work?

[Trisquel-users] Can't get Thinkpenguin USB Wireless N Adapter to work

2013-11-24 Thread djhood17

Hi All,

I bought a free software friendly wireless N adapter from Thinkpenguin to run
on my shiny new Trisquel Desktop (Trisquel 6). I followed the instructions as
best as I can on the following page to update the firmware:

https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb-tpe-n150usbl-tpe-nusbdb

I rebooted and changed usb ports several times, no dice.

The only thing that is different in the way I did it was that I did not
update the system first. I kind of need wireless to do that since my router
is behind my bed in a completely different room from the desk my pc sits on.
I simply downloaded the files to a usb drive on my laptop and shuffled them
over.

Is there an easier way than ripping apart half my house on the off chance
updating will make this work to get it up and running?

My bios shows this menu:

Execute Disable Bit Enabled
Hyper Threading Function Enabled
Quick Boot Disabled
Security Option Setup
Boot to OS/2
Boot Sequence

When selecting Boot Sequence it says:

Hard Disk Boot Priority Press Enter
1st Boot Device USB-CDROM
2nd Boot Device USB-FDD
3rd Boot Device Hard Disk
Boot From Other Device Enabled

When selecting Hard Disk Boot Sequence it says:

1. Ch2 M. : WDC WD3200JD-22KLBO
2. Bootable Add-in Cards

As I told you, you should first fix your problem with broken packages. See my
previous post to do that from the Synaptic package manager or learn by
yourself ow to do it from the command line.

everything you want.

Hallo, I am working on a Medion PC and trying to install Trisquel from a
flash drive (Pen Drive/USB). I have accessed the bios using del and changed
the boot sequence so as to place hard drive as 2nd and 3rd option, usb as
first. But it still continues to boot from the hard drive so I cannot install
Trisquel:-( There was also an option to enable boot from external devices and
that also didn't change anything. Anyone with an idea? The bios is Phoenix

Re: [Trisquel-users] Getting someone to switch to Trisquel

2013-11-24 Thread icarolongo

Ekiga isn't good. I recommend Jitsi, Linphone or WebRTC.
All this is cross-platform. You can install in the most operating systems.

For GNU/Linux the best for small resources or old computer is Empathy and
Linphone. Jitsi is a memory and CPU hungry. Probably WebRTC in Abrowser too.

Unfortunately this only true for vanilla Xonotic. If you like to play
ChaosEsque this is very different from the hardware requirements. I even
found my AMD Quadcore (4x3GHz) and a GeForce 450 slowing down a lot. And this
was with the propritary driver

Re: [Trisquel-users] Getting someone to switch to Trisquel

2013-11-24 Thread onpon4
Gnash doesn't work well for anything, and in fact gets in the way of fallback
HTML5 players (making some streaming sites look like they don't work when
they do). I have no idea if Wine works with Skype, but it's probably not a
high priority what with a GNU binary being available.

Sure, you could give your friend Trisquel with Skype added on, but what would
be the point in that? They're going to get no support for that from this
community, and they might decide that Trisquel (or worse, "Linux" or
"GNU/Linux") is stupid. If they're unwilling to stop using proprietary
software, you might as well give them an imperfect system whose community is
going to help them. Take it one step at a time.

If they already know about free software and understand that proprietary
software is bad, that's a different story, but most people who are used to
Windows don't even know about this issue, much less understand it.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Getting someone to switch to Trisquel

2013-11-24 Thread magicbanana
Do not expect from this community any help to install proprietary software.
There are alternatives to Skype. I simply use Pidgin for video-conferences.
Apparently, Jitsi is the best option (I have never tried it). There is Ekiga
too.

Gnash works on very few websites. People usually need Flash video players on
popular sites such as YouTube, DailyMotion or Vimeo. In this specific area,
several free software solutions exist. I mainly use ViewTube (a GreaseMonkey
script) and try UnPlug if ViewTube fails. Take a look at this documentation
for other solutions.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Getting someone to switch to Trisquel

2013-11-24 Thread magicbanana
For "something like Windows XP", I would stick to Trisquel's default
interface (GNOME Fallback) rather than installing Xfce.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Minor video editing with command line

2013-11-24 Thread magicbanana
About video format conversion, OggConvert is part of Trisquel's default
install. This graphical utility is both limited and apparently is not
developed anymore (the last version is 3.5 years old). I would suggest
Transmageddon as a replacement. It is in Trisquel's repositories. Notice that
it can be used to create simple audio files from videos or from other audio
files.
