Re: [Trisquel-users] Migration from Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy) to Trisquel 6.0 (Toutatis)

2014-01-20 Thread hi
@huanglao:I suggest you to install Trisquel 6.0 from USB device in your
Xubnutu box 13.10 and by default it won't erase any of your Xubnutu stuff.

Here's more similar steps for your case from my experience:
===
1) When it asks about which partition to install , make it install along with
Xubuntu.

2) Resize the partition of either your Xubnutu /home or / for Trisquel 6.0

3) Trisquel 6.0 won't delete/overwrite Xubuntu's files. But it's always
better to take important files. I did for mine ~500GB!

4) Once installation done , you can loaded with Dual boot (Trisquel 6.0 /
Xubuntu 13.10)

5) You can go into Trisquel 6.0 and copy/access all your stuff inside mounted
Xubuntu partition

6) Anytime , you can go to your Xubuntu 13.10 from boot-loader.(You can keep
this for your historical reference and/or alternate choice)

7) Once you satisfied with the Trisquel 6.0 setup and files, you can go-ahead
remove the Xubuntu's partition.

Refer the attached screen-shot for how I able to access my Ubuntu 13.10 files
from Trisquel 6.0 .

Attachment #1 : Showing my Ubuntu's 89GB of /home and 21GB of / .
Attachment #2 : Showing my Disk utility report.

Once again , it's always better to take important files.Good luck.

If you know your computer's IP address, you'll know the addresses of your
network. There are many ways to check your computer's address.

From the network icon in your desktop panel, select Connection Information.
There you'll see IP Address: and your IP address next to it.

What I do is use a terminal, by typing:

ip addr

There you'll see a numbered list of devices and information about them. Each
device has a label such as lo, eth0, eth1 or wlan0. Devices like eth are
used when you are connect via a LAN cable. Devices like wlan are for WiFi
connection. The lo is a special virtual device, used for connecting to
yourself.

If you're using a wireless connection, then read the information of wlan0.
There you should see inet and your IP address.

If your IP address is 192.168.1.107, then your network is 192.168.1.0/24. The
/24 means your local network is the addresses from 192.168.1.0 to
192.168.1.255. If it was /16, that would mean from 192.168.0.0 to
192.168.255.255.

As I understand, if you set Postfix's mynetworks option this way, computer's
on your you'll local network will be able to send emails from your server.

I haven't done it for the x60, though that was the idea when I bought
the laptop. Lack of time and too many tasks. :/ I've flashed Coreboot
on a desktop motherboard, where there is one advantage - the flash
chip can be replaced (in some cases).

Basically, Coreboot has a sister project which is a general purpose
flash ( EEPROM) chip programmer. You have to use it to install
Coreboot. It communicates with the flash/BIOS chip over a system bus
from GNU/Linux.

The procedure describes how to change flashrom source code to
work-around the proprietary BIOS restrictions which prevents BIOS
flashing on the entire chip. It seems the modification is flash chip
specific. The proprietary BIOS is read from the chip for backup
(recovery if necessary). The Coreboot image is prepared and the flash
chip is programmed with the special image. When Coreboot is flashed
and the laptop boots, the entire chip is reprogrammed. This procedure
uses the internal system bus for programming. If an external
programmer and a SO-8 IC clip mentioned in the recovery section is
used, the modifications should not be needed. The external programmer
approach is more complicated.

If you need more help, I would be glad to help. You can also find me
on the Trisquel IRC channel as thedreamer. I'm usually online most of
the time (UTC+2:00), but during work hours I'm at work, (duh! :)) so I
won't be able to spare more than 10 minutes.

Re: [Trisquel-users] coreboot flashing

2014-01-20 Thread mono
A few days ago I did the same with a x60. It took me about a week to 1) read,
2) understand most parts, or at least understand enough for success and 3)
actually upgrading the BIOS. Once you know which steps to do, it will take a
few minutes only.

You might want to read a few more pages. GNUtoo has a spearate coreboot
branch with removed microcode and a so-called native vga code that replaces
the non-free vga code. this branch is used by gluglug too, as far as I
understood and thus this branch is what is ryf-certified by fsf

http://www.coreboot.org/User:GNUtoo

https://www.gitorious.org/gnutoo-for-coreboot/coreboot/source/0c4ce5539a16ea32c903e7596f12a412f9afe2ca:

make sure to checkout the production-x60+v5 branch, not the master branch.

On GNUtoo's page the description is mostly about how to flash (this means
write) the new BIOS to the eeprom chip (aka flash chip). To my understanding
you should not skip the step that says: get to know which chip is installed
in you computer by inspection. I had to remove almost all parts from the x60
inside to find this chip and I had to use a magnifier glass and good zoom
photo to be able to read the chip name. The lenovo hardware manual is a very
good resource for how to install and deinstall all the parts.

For actually learning how to build coreboot, which results in a file named
coreboot.rom and which is to be flashed/written to the eeprom chip you might
read the generic HowTo

http://www.coreboot.org/Build_HOWTO

and for me this was even more helpful:
http://www.coreboot.org/User:Fchmmr
it uses GNUtoo's code.

For me it was very new that the bootloader grub now is stored in the eeprom
chip, it is not stored at the hard disk anymore. well there are other
possibilities, you should read about it.

hope this helps a little,
cheers Mono

Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing packages without internet connection

2014-01-20 Thread shiretoko

Please describe the problem that occured in more detail.
In general it's perfectly possible to copy a .deb file on another computer
and install it with

sudo dpkg -i path/to/yourfile.deb

There is one big problem: the package will probably have dependencies which
dpkg doesn't take account for.

In the case of a disconnected pc I recommend the Debian operating system with
only free repositories enabled because this way you can download all the
debian dvds which contains their whole repository and use apt for installing
software.

So you won't have to struggle with dependencies.

I don't know if trisquel has images of the whole repository, too.

in fact, even debian doesn't really use DVDs for the entire repo anymore (it
is possible using jigdo somehow). it was viewed as a waste of space.

I don't know if trisquel has images of the whole repository, too.

trisquel doesn't offer anything similar.

If I boot or reboot my laptop, a Trisquel animation logo appears, but does
not go away, no matter how long I wait. I have to force it off with the power
button. When I boot again, a GRUB interface with a Debian background appears,
and asks me if I want to boot a 3.2.0-57 kernel, or Previous Linux
versions. Choosing the immediate option leads to the same boot problem on a
black Trisquel 6.0 screen with the four blue/white dots. But choosing
Previous Linux versions boots the computer correctly.

I'm installing a new kernel version to see if this fixes the problem, but

Orca also reads on-screen text. So if I select a new window, it will tell me

Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom status of software written in assembly language

2014-01-20 Thread Michał Masłowski
There are free programs in script languages that normally have no
separate binaries. The GPL defines object code as non-source forms of
the program, free software works and is used for programs where source
and binary are the same.

Assembly is like other compiled languages: source has comments, labels
(function and global variable names), macros, which help understand and
modify it while the generated binary and source disassembled from it
don't have them.

There are some programs written as binary (not assembly), the same form
is the source and they are free.
