[Trisquel-users] FOSS gaming
Hey guys! I am a college student in the united states and I think that the community is lacking a bit in games for GNU/Linux, I know that there are 3d games out there that are FOSS but how can we compete with Steam if we do not have a centralized distributor and development center for games of our own? So I want to start using my spare time on this project I started tonight called: libreMist, and here are the basic ideas of it: All games are required to be GPL compatible Mimic the functionality of Steam to make playing free games just as easy No forced updates on the client While we likely cannot compete with Steam in the windows market, but now that GNU/Linux is being tainted with proprietary software, I think that if a project rose and picked up momentum that we could compete with Steam and Valve on the GNU/Linux market, I hope that you guys will be interested in this idea as well, here is my contact info if any of you guys wish to collaberate with me! email: brig...@linuxmail.org Here is the page I have made for the project (I know that it is empty but I hope to have at least a skeleton of a GUI by the end of the week) Thank you for reading guys! https://sourceforge.net/projects/fossgaming/ All war is, but class struggle - Brigham Keys Esq.
Re: [Trisquel-users] FOSS gaming
Isn't this solved by GNU/Linux distros? They have centralized repos and package managers that allow easily installing the packages. Having the game included in Debian leads to it being available later in many distros (and easy to backport to their current releases). pgpKmHBHSubjz.pgp Description: PGP signature

I believe each X, in GustavoCM's message, is an hexadecimal number (i.e., from 0 to f). Two such numbers effectively allow to encode 16x16=256 values (from 0 o 255 in decimal numbering).
[Trisquel-users] [offtopic] SoylentNews (RIP /.)
The once mighty Slashdot has fallen. Acquired by Dice and run aground for good. The current beta was the last straw, in a long series of poor decisions. /. existed since 1997 and was a site which slogan used to be news for nerds, things that matter. It was a home for many internet old timers and the discussion or at least atmosphere was generally fairly free software centered and supportive. The horrible beta user interface which mauled the very heart of the site, the discussion system, made an old guard vanguard to call for Slashcott 10-17 Feb. This was carried out. And now a replacement has sprung up. http://soylentnews.org/ Also see http://wiki.soylentnews.org/ for the development and short history of the new site and #altslashdot IRC chan on freenode.net for general banter. SoylentNews is still in a fairly fluid state and under development. If you enjoyed /. in its heyday, you might want to check this out.

You can still view the old slashdot. Just go to http://classic.slashdot.org or http://slashdot.org/?nobeta=1
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel Desktop Environment
I installed Trisquel onto my computer, but however, while I was going through the steps of installation, I accidently didn't press install Trisquel Desktop Environment so now when I boot up my machine, all I get is a terminal/text based interface. What command can I type to install desktop environment onto the machine? If there isn't whats another way to get it without reinstalling the OS? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
[Trisquel-users] Re : Trisquel Desktop Environment
I am not 100% sure, but I believe the following commands should solve your problem: if you want GNOME Classic: sudo apt-get install trisquel if you want LXDE: sudo apt-get install trisquel-mini if you want KDE: sudo apt-get install triskel
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Desktop Environment
sudo tasksel

Re: [Trisquel-users] Your thoughts on Firefox to have ads in the browser
Great idea. And then we'll all keep crying oh why are there so few people making money with free software. I don't know how showing some ads should harm the privacy of the users in any way. If you want to contribute to free software, then let those damn ads where they are.
[Trisquel-users] AMD Radeon 8330 graphics with Trisquel?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA512 Hi, I was wondering what is the status of support of the AMD Radeon 8330 chipsets in Trisquel? Are there 100% free open source drivers supporting 3d/acceleration? Are those available for Trisquel? Re: [Trisquel-users] AMD Radeon 8330 graphics with Trisquel?
The open source Radeon drivers require nonfree firmware for acceleration, so it won't work on free systems. Modesetting often works, while there are driver bugs that might lead to a black screen or errors on suspend/resume. I don't know if these problems occur on 8330. pgp49dnlzlwp2.pgp Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] Your thoughts on Firefox to have ads in the browser
If there's going to be a future clause to the Firefox licensing where deriatives will have to use the ad code or else they won't allow you to use your code, that would make Firefox non-free software, because that's a restriction on modifications. I'm not too concerned by this advertising, given that I don't use the default New Tab page, but an add-on.
Re: [Trisquel-users] FOSS gaming
Yeah, it seems to be solving a problem that doesn't really exist on GNU/Linux. If the original poster were to have been talking about making more free games that's one thing but otherwise yeah - The software distribution problem was licked years ago in GNU/Linux with package managers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Your thoughts on Firefox to have ads in the browser
Mozilla is probably trying to become less dependent on Google for its income (said to be 90%). I block ads anyway with a clear conscience because I'm never going to click on them and they are an attack vector for malware. I wish Mozilla luck in finding alternative sources of revenue, but I will downgrade as much as necessary to avoid problems if Mozilla has to compromise its principles.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Your thoughts on Firefox to have ads in the browser
I pretty much never click on advertisements, either. But the truth of the matter is, running websites costs money. You can rely on user donations (usually unfeasible), make it into a subscription service, or you can advertise. For this reason, I disable blocking advertisements on any site that asks me to.

Recently I've tested version 3.12 of the Linux kernel on Debian testing with another card – Radeon HD 6310. It seems completely useless with free software as the non-free firmware is required for modesetting. Without modesetting the card starts in vesa mode. For the little time I had to dedicate to the issue it seemed that the driver refuses to load at all without the non-free firmware. I found information on the Internet that there are other such AMD cards. I had no time to investigate if this is going to be fixed or introduced for all AMD cards in newer kernels. It might be coincidence with the unusable nature of Debian testing, but the 6310 is not stable and usable … no matter the firmware and the mode the kernel starts it in. My point is that some AMD cards might be unusable at all with free software even for 2D. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Thank you very much.
Re: [Trisquel-users] AMD Radeon 8330 graphics with Trisquel?
I had a similar issue on Radeon HD4350 (RV710) when the RLC microcode was introduced. It was later fixed, I used Trisquel and Parabola on that machine. It's probably worse with newer cards. Linux-libre has working modesetting for more Radeons than Debian without firmware: Debian intentionally disables it [0] despite it working on some cards. While it works on e.g. HD3200 and HD4350, all h-node.org reports of it working with HD6310 are with Trisquel (one fails on Parabola), so it's probably due to vesa, not radeon driver. I'm a bit fraid they're shooting their own foot here. I'd like to see what (and if) other options has been considered and researched. It's easy to go just what everybody else does, but that breaks ff's greatest strength, i think.
[Trisquel-users] Video editing
What is the best free video editing software to edit videos. It should be stable and powerful and must be able to edit high resolution (HD) videos. Please list pros and cons and give reasons why you recommend it. Thank you!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video editing
I've only used PiTiVi and OpenShot. OpenShot is reliable, but doesn't have a lot of features. It's kind of comparable to Windows Movie Maker. PiTiVi is much more powerful, but I've had trouble with exporting the videos; it seems a lot of formats supposed to be available just don't work. I've heard that Cinelerra is pretty good, but I haven't tried it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] AMD Radeon 8330 graphics with Trisquel?
As far as I'm aware, there is no reverse-engineering effort with AMD GPUs, which means paradoxically that AMD cooperating half-way is even worse for our community than not cooperating at all, like Nvidia does.
Re: [Trisquel-users] FOSS gaming
Yes I am aware that those games exist, I was just suggesting that there could be a place for these games to be distributed. Even though I am aware that package managers solve the whole distribution issue, that most package managers do not have all of the games in the libregame wiki, so this project would have the aim of aiding these games to be distributed.

Hi GustavoCM, This doesn't appear to work for me. I tried first with XX = 7F, then XX = FF, then XX = 1F. No noticeable change in screen brightness. Thanks.

Re: [Trisquel-users] FOSS gaming
It's possible to host custom repositories, e.g. PPAs for Ubuntu-based systems like Trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Desktop Environment
Simply question on the topic. Any of those commands will install the default GUI applications for Trisquel?
Re: [Trisquel-users] FOSS gaming
It's true that package managers solve the distribution issue, and a great way to achieve what BrighamKeys is suggesting would be a libre games PPA, which could be added to any apt-based distro. However, I think the appeal of Steam is broader than just the distribution mechanism. It's a graphics-rich, content-rich portal that facilitates discovery of new games to play. There are also social features (that some would consider gimmicks) like achievement tracking, and hosted forums for all the games. Not to mention Steam chat, which I believe is just XMPP, but it's nice to have it integrated and automatic. Then, of course, there's the elephant in the room, which is that Steam is also a payment mechanism that allows the purchase of proprietary games. I don't want to get into a FOSS-vs-prop. discussion here, but FOSS games don't really have to solve this issue, as you can't really sell a download of a piece of FOSS. (Well, you can, but there would be no incentive for anyone to pay it when current holders are free to pass the software on for gratis). Maybe we could look at something involving bitcoins here, but IMO that would be for donations only, not purchases per-se.

Yes.
