[Trisquel-users] Securing USB stick
I have some important files on a USB stick which are encrypted using EncFS with the paranoia option. My question is about the .encfs6.xml files in the USB stick. If my USB stick gets stolen, should I get worried that the USB stick contains the .encfs6.xml file?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Mini 6 refuses to boot
Thank you very much for pointing out the solution! Chrooted like a charm. Right now I'm posting this comment from Midori browser after boot from hard drive.
[Trisquel-users] Re : security / cleaning
You can install computer-janitor to do a bit more than 'apt-get autoremove'. There is a graphical interface: computer-janitor-gtk.

[Trisquel-users] New on Trisquel: how to see live videos and chatting on sites
Hello everyone. I was a windows user and after discovered some free software like libreoffice,Sumatra PDF, etc. i decided to find more about free software until i found linux and the several distributions of linux including Trisquel. I liked so much the ideas concerning freedom that i wanted to test Trisquel using it for 3weaks so far. But I am having great difficuties to see online movies and seeing online and live stream of Fatima (yes i like to pray...). http://www.santuario-fatima.pt/portal/index.php?id=14924 I am no programmer, and i dont know the basic language of programming, i am just a simple user learning or trying to, understand the abc of linux I have posted a topic Ver videos e chat da net on spanish forum but i saw there is much more people on english forum to ask. Thanks to Alcipri, an user of spanish forum, i read documentation based http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/play-videos-without-using-flash But i cannot play the online video on Fatima's site, it appear a black rectangle. I downloaded Greasemonkey 1.15, Viewtube 2014.03.03, Linterna Mágica 1.22, Viewtube Plus 2014.03.07, Midori and following the advice of Alcipri on http://userscripts.org/ to see what is good to pick up, but i really dont have a clue what to do. Even i have downloaded all these programs i am still unable to see on Fatima's site, watch32.com; filmesonlinegratis.net; dramago, even on chessbase's site videos and many many others. And i cannot speak on chatportugal.net because it appears all white, when on ubuntu, opensuse and linux mint it worked like a charm (i know there they have proprietary software, etc.) I am struggling to fight proprietary systems. It is still a victory that i dont have returned to windows. I want to say a Thank You to all trisquel's developers, to linterna mágica developer and the users of forum that put all questions and i learned things from there. But still i feel i have a lot, much more to learn because of course i'm still a newbie. Thanks in advance to all!

[Trisquel-users] Special characters, for libreoffice, easy way to insert?
For school, I sometimes have to do french homeworks, which obviously involve accents. On libreoffice, doing this is a bore, as I have to press insertSpecial symbol and find the one I want, which takes ages. On my friend's mac, he holds down the letter, and a little box appears asking him what symbol he wants. And on OpenTeacher, there is a little box on the side with all the useful symbols only. Is there a feature for this sort of thing in Libreoffice, or does anyone know of a plugin which does the same thing?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Gksu prompts for Administrator (root) password even if it is set to sudo
Can you not use gksudo? (many gconf things are not read in gnome 3 which uses the gsettings thingy)
Re: [Trisquel-users] security / cleaning
For proactive security I recommend using the NoScript extension for abrowser. https://trisquel.info/en/browser/addons/noscript-0

Re: [Trisquel-users] Haswell 3-d support?
I wonder if a dead BIOS battery could be the culprit here?
[Trisquel-users] Re : Special characters, for libreoffice, easy way to insert?
You should add (a + button) an international (search for this word) version of your keyboard layout (see the layout tab of the eponymous utility, in the System Settings). There is a UK international and a USA international. You then need to learn where to find the accents in the layout. They are to be typed before the accentuated letter. You can look at the keyboard layout from the utility.
[Trisquel-users] Re : security / cleaning
Yes. If it does not want to remove useful stuff (in my case it wants to remove the software I installed through a .deb to declare my taxes). Otherwise, uncheck what is to be kept.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Gksu prompts for Administrator (root) password even if it is set to sudo
I can use gksu and gksudo from the console but I need to be able to run apps from the Activities overview (I use GNOME shell).
[Trisquel-users] Is it bad to install more packages than recommended (or required)?
I read somewhere that every package is a vunreability. Should this principle be applied to home/office workstations? (if I installed gnome instead of gnome-shell, or if I even installed a X.org server at all...)

[...] Is there a feature for this sort of thing in Libreoffice, or does anyone know of a plugin which does the same thing? GNOME and Xorg have support for such things. You have to set keys for third and fifth level. These keys while held give access to additional characters available on some keyboards. In many cases those are accents. Go to System settings (gnome-control-center) and choose Keyboard Layout. On the Layout tabs, there is a Options button. What you need is located in Key to choose 3rd layout and Key to choose 5th layout. The accents should be visible on your physical keyboard, but you can use the tiny keyboard on the Layouts tab to see where the accents are. To insert accents with the keys for third and fifth lever, hold the key for the desired level and then press the key with the accent. To add more accents release all keys and repeat the procedure. That's it! signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
[Trisquel-users] Re : Is it bad to install more packages than recommended (or required)?
The problem is not about *installing* useless applications but about *running* useless applications. Especially those interacting with the Internet.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Special characters, for libreoffice, easy way to insert?
U.S. International with dead keys is what I would use (I've used it before), but I'm confused: the way dead keys are supposed to work is nothing shows up until the next key is pressed, which determines what is typed: if the next key is space, the accent shows up by itself, and if you press a letter the key can be used with, the appropriate accented character shows up. But the way it's behaving on my system is the keys just don't do anything at all. If I press and then o, I should get ö, but instead I just get o. Similarly, if I type ' and then e I should get é, but I just get e. All the keys seem to be able to do is print their normal U.S. layout counterparts if AltGr is held down.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Special characters, for libreoffice, easy way to insert?
You could install xbindkeys from Trisquel's repositories, add it to your startup applications, and then bind some keyboard shortcuts to the diacritics you need.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Haswell 3-d support?
If it is it certainly happened at a very unfortunate time. Like probably most here, I remember reading stories about samsung uefi laptops getting bricked by linux but I'm assuming that simply switching from uefi to bios mode and net-installing wouldn't cause a freeze like I've described?
Re: [Trisquel-users] New on Trisquel: how to see live videos and chatting on sites
Thanks onpon4, BugRep and Ivaylo for the fast answer! And such a honor the developer of linterna mágica, talked in first hand! Thanks again all. Because of Ivaylo and his reccomendation's links i understand now a bit more the history and philosophy of Gnu-linux. And by the way, it is possible to change my nickname (...)linux to gnu-linux? Because on my account i cannot see where to change a proper nickname change to gnu-linux. Best regards.

Surely Mozilla make enough money from the Google search kickback?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Raspberry pi makes one step towards freedom
The Raspberry Pi is (perhaps until now) unable to boot without the proprietary driver. This quote is from the FSF single board computer page: The Raspberry Pi requires nonfree software to start up. It can't reach the point of executing free software unless this nonfree program is part of the installed system software. The startup program is, in fact, the same program that runs the GPU and the video decoding hardware. Thus, the GPU and the video decoding hardware are unusable in the free world, but these jobs can be done with free software on the CPU. That program appears to implement intentional restrictions, such as blocking the video decoding hardware for MPEG-2 and VC-1 in the absence of a key that is specific to the machine in hand.
[Trisquel-users] is Trisquel's dictionary saass?
It doesn't seem to work offline; I think that it checks a server for definitons. Or I haven't figured out how to use it properly/as software (strong possibility).

Re: [Trisquel-users] is Trisquel's dictionary saass?
It's based on use of a server, and you can customize what this server is. Using someone else's dictionary database probably isn't SaaSS; looking up words in their database isn't something you would be able to do in your computer. On the other hand, it's true that you don't necessarily need to access someone else's dictionary remotely; you could have a local copy and access that. I think remote dictionaries have a legitimate use: making sure the definition you're reading is up-to-date. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about using remote dictionaries for all look-ups, though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video editing
I've been a user of Final Cut Pro (FCP) since version 1; it is actually why I had original switched to that evil empire, before they were so notorious. But after dumping thousands into their software, version X made me sick. It wasn't so much because I hated it interface, but it is because I realized how little control we have. I would love to see a simple, open source platform with the same stability I found in the original FCP. I'm currently prepping a gradual transition to open sourse, and I have been looking into a few options. First, my hopes are four basic features: (1) To be able to make Simple Cuts and Edits (2) To handle multi-track audio and video (3) To handling and exporting multiple formats and, finally, (4) stability I have my eyes on Openshot, Kdenlive, Pitivi, and Blender. The newer version of Pitivi looks very promissing, but I had trouble getting it up and going on Trisquel. I also had some trouble with Openshot. I was able to get the latest version of Kdenlive working. I was quite impressed with the ability to manage proxy files and with the simple interface. Unfortunately, it looks like development has slowed to a crawl—and some fear it may have been abandoned by the lead. My first impression of Blender is cumbersome. There are so many options and windows. However, once you dig in, from what I understand, it is one of the more flexible and stable. I'm hoping to work with each of these overtime. Perhaps if we can contribute to each they may improve the access, stability and/or simplify the interfaces.
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Trisquel's dictionary saass?
Hello all, where can I download a free .dict format dictionary? I think remote dictionaries have a legitimate use: making sure the definition you're reading is up-to-date. I don't think the meaning of words change that fast, assuming you are talking about a dictionary, and not an encyclopedia.
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Trisquel's dictionary saass?
looking up words in their database isn't something you would be able to do in your computer. The premise in this statement is that we want to do the task with a server. That premise affects the answer (yes, we can only look up a word on a server, if we use a server). I don't think that we need a server to look up words in a dictionary [1]. If remote dictionaries have a legitimate use, maybe the dictionary could offer options: to download dictionaries, or to use a server. If Trisquel won't come with definition files, the server option may be worth keeping for people who have low-bandwidth Internet connections. [1] Here's a dictionary application that doesn't depend on a server each search: https://code.google.com/p/quickdic-dictionary/
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Trisquel's dictionary saass?
muhammed said: If remote dictionaries have a legitimate use, maybe the dictionary could offer options: to download dictionaries, or to use a server. Right, and Dictionary does give you an option, though it's not obvious: point it to a locally running server. Of course, it really ought to just support dictionary files, and frankly it looks to me like a piece of crap; GoldenDict seems to be a much better choice.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New on Trisquel: how to see live videos and chatting on sites
Commercial sites like Flash because it can run on any browser as a plugin regardless of vendor or whether it has a certain codec. Plus, Flash is easier to serve protected content because a user cannot directly download the video file like with the video tag. Of course mobile devices don't support Flash, but its not a big as Android, iPhone/iPad, and Windows Phone support H264 as a system wide codec.
