Re: [Trisquel-users] CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
Yes I have that installed. You're right, Gpicview is probably the best match for CDE.
[Trisquel-users] Re : CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
I personally prefer programs that are desktop environment-agnostic, like gPicView.
Re: [Trisquel-users] CDE -- Common Desktop Environment
I said earlier that Gnome apps, some of them, can't be resized. They don't get the Motif decoration but use their own instead. These are somehow dependent on Gnome 3 design decisions. I found that Nate apps work better together with CDE. Caja for File Manager (CDE's native FM is pretty archaic), Eom (Eye of Mate) for images.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Where did LibreJS go?
I'm not sure you're providing enough information. It would be helpful to say how you go about disabling it and what happens when you try to turn it on again. For example: You go to Tools, Add-ons, and then...? It should be as easy as clicking the Enable button. Or is LibreJS not shown there or what? You do not say. :) Either way re-installing the browser to get an add-on back seems too much, especially since it is available via one-click install from the LibreJS website: http://www.gnu.org/software/librejs/
[Trisquel-users] Where did LibreJS go?
A couple of times I decided to disable and then enable LibreJS and now I can't get it back. This happened once before and I solved it by reinstalling IceCat. This time I tried running icecat as root and I also created a temporary regular user to run icecat. LibreJS works with those other users. So I figured it is the settings, so I moved ~/.mozilla/icecat to ~/BAK.icecat and still LibreJS is missing. Is there a better solution than either: 1.) Never disable LibreJS 2.) Or disable LibreJS and reinstall icecat to enable it again?
Re: [Trisquel-users] does it make the raspberry pi 3 a free software computer?
Yes, that's why MINIX developers (an Operating System for thouse who don't know) where able to port MINIX 3 to ARM using the beaglebone. Actually they first tried with raspberry but it was more complex and harder because of the blobs and less documentation the rasberry has. This is an example of how more open hardware helps innovation.

I use a private server with version 38.8 of IceDove and can send attachments / forward emails containing attachments without issues. However I get SMTP-Timout-Errors when replying/forwading emails (not writing new emails) from my business-server that others don't get.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
>Why not something like Cinnamon, which has a "natural" GNOME Shell layout and a fallback mode at the same time? Because Cinnamon, just like GNOME 3, is focused on modern machines with proprietary blobs thus one can assume that the "fallback" options could be discontinued in the near future. The classic option of GNOME Shell was originally intended to be dropped real soon and kind of "survived" due to its popularity. A GNU/Linux distribution that uses absolutely no proprietary software and can utilize modern hardware only to some little extend should use a desktop environment that will most likely work under these circumstances in the foreseeable future. >Or Xfce XFCE is another good option I think. I'm not quite sure about access for handicapped people, though. Also, releases tend to be slow so reaction to security holes could lead to some concerns (and security concerns seems to make people consider switching to free software). Another little disadvantage is, that GNOME usually comes with feature-rich applications that offer everything new users expect from applications while XFCE tends to sacrifice a bit of functionality for performance (which, again, is a plus for XFCE). But generally, yes, if a bit of work goes into that I think XFCE is also a good candidate for a 100% free software distro that also focuses on usability, new users.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom by "burning bridges"
I think that the modem is physically part of the system on chip. I really wouldn't try to physically break Amy circuits, because capacitors can be dangerous and you could break something you did not intend to. Seriously, this is not a solution. Get a PDA if you want yo use the phone in that way, or a Replicant tablet. Then just have a flip phone or something. Regarding Android: Google develop Android and release a huge batch of source code yearly. This is the Android Open Source Project, and is the Android platform and not much else. It cannot be run on any device as is except the emulator provided in the Android SDK. Google provide patches for an ancient kernel, usually 3.4 or 3.10. This is given to Android device manufacturers and mobile phone companies, sometimes slightly before it is public ally released. They then port it to the device, and port the kernel with badly-written blobbed drivers, and even some proprietary GPL-violating drivers like the Qualcomm out-of-tree driver for graphics. They then license the Googleapps (Google Play services, Chrome etc) and add other bloatware. CyanogenMod takes the AOSP source code, and develop extra features, and replacements for the abandoned applications. They port this to as many devices as possible. They use publicly available kernel sources and add proprietary drovers like the one from Qualcomm to get certain features to work. It gets rid of some spyware installed by the manufacturer but they recommend the Google Apps and provide packages to install them. Replicant takes CyanogenMod and makes it as free as possible. The only firmware loaded is modem firmware because it is too complex to reverse-engineer.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Untrusted Packages prompt
It happens when signatures cannot be authenticated for download packages. For me, the following usually dies the trick:sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get update Basically it just deletes cached packages, and updates. Then run sudo apt-get upgrade to upgrade, or just wait until it prompts you graphically. You can do the equivalent in the synaptic package manager too.

[Trisquel-users] Freedom by "burning bridges"
Quite pleased by the destruction of the wifi chip on my e-reader, I was thinking about destroying more of my stuff. My questions involve ways to severe physical routes to GPS, 3G/2G, mic & cam. I want to keep the wifi for e-mails. But first, here's my (hopefully logical) reasoning. I consider a smartphone only as a phone now. I need it: - for work (specific days where I have to be reached at once). - for emergency calls. Else, the battery will be removed. Why all the trouble? - No tracking. Not that I care that much, but why allow it? Even if it represents a limited amount of location privacy (other smartphones mics, surveiliance camera and face recognition in the near future I guess...), at least it's worth trying. - It feels like a false need to be reached at all times. - Less wave intensity colser to my genitals (phone in the pocket), even if it's not proven harmful for now. Downside: often unreacheable by phone, but often by mail (need wifi to be on then, at work for example). So how to stay as reachable as possible when my phone is off (most of the time)? I can invite e-mail use. At home, I need an audio and visual alert for e-mails. On the go: Since I don't want to buy yet another device, which would be super outdated and would cost as much, I can try to destroy GPS and 3G on my current (relatively cheap) phone, as well as the mic and cam, in order to transform it in some kind of offline PDA. But if wifi is still enabled, and it doesn't use one of the severed channels, I still need an as free as possible OS. Maybe severing it anyway and using an external libre wifi card could work. If it works, I have a solid PDA, with mail and web as needed. Better that tons of paper pads, a music player, etc. I can enable the wifi on the spots where it's kind of "ok" to be tracked (stationnary outside the house, like at work, or a wifi hotspot). Else, I'm just unreachable when going out, or between places. And it's an acceptable downside. Now, questions, questions: 1 - Do you have any insight about circuits on a motherboard? I want to physically disable 3G/2G, GPS, mic and camera. Because I'm 100% sure I don't need them on a smartphone turned into a PDA. 2 - Is a cut or a whole enough (I guess it is, specially right through an antenna or chip)? Is there a better way? Of course, I can just attempt stuff and test if I'm reachable, or if I can use the mic for example. But it's safer to gather some data first. Links are welcomed too. So far I found interesting data on websites about phone repair. My phone (which I want to turn to a PDA) isn't supported by CyanogenMod :( 3 - Is AOSP from source without Google's crap really wort it? Is there a list of parts to remove from the source? Right now I'm thinking of the Tor link I've already posted about hardening Android. But if I can compile without all that, it's even better. 4 - I also wonder what's different between AOSP cleaned up and Replicant (and thus CyanogenMod). I really don't need to be this much off the grid, but I want to try anyway. I feel like Mac Gyver lol Of course I could just use something like that instead: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hipster_PDA
Re: [Trisquel-users] If you could go back in time and talk to your former "owned" self
Same here, I could survive without it if it weren't a job requirement. Plus it's nice to have some form of back up plan if I need to reach someone ASAP, to change plans when going out etc. Sometimes people don't read their mail, text messages go through more often/faster. But since I'm going to remove my battery as often as possible, I'll experiment a bit with how it feels like to be out of the Matrix (funny, they actually use phones to get inside the Matrix in the movie).
Re: [Trisquel-users] If you could go back in time and talk to your former "owned" self
Many thanks for the Rockbox ideas, I'll have my own alarm-clock ready in no time (I have an old device which is supported) ! For emergency, I mostly agree with you, except that when out, you need to rely on others. Calling the police when witnessing an agression, I wonder how many people do so under pressure (I'm not even talking about direct assistance). Counting on public phones is random at best (how Superman would do his thing these days?). OTOH, Never had to use mine for such an emergency. Reminders on the laptop, why not, but it needs to be on, and if you have to move often, it's not the most practical. But I see it's perfect for your professional lifestyle. Thanks again for the Rockbox ideas, cheers !

Re: [Trisquel-users] ZFS now available in Debian. Maybe its time to stop fighting it?
I'm not saying it is not free software. Of that I have no doubt. Just that the term "ecosystem" is really pretentious. It sounds like you have just left some sort of weird business course on "IP law" and all that crap.
Re: [Trisquel-users] ZFS now available in Debian. Maybe its time to stop fighting it?
I agree, an 'ecosystem' is something I'd like not to be associated with free software.
Re: [Trisquel-users] ZFS now available in Debian. Maybe its time to stop fighting it?
Trisquel 8 will have Unity, Mir, and Snap because it uses the Ubuntu packages and therefore is part of the "ecosystem" I speak of. All are considered free software and created by Canonical. Whether others adapt them or not, it's their win or loss.

Re: [Trisquel-users] ZFS now available in Debian. Maybe its time to stop fighting it?
Evasive is not the right word. I think, clandestine is a better word. It is not right to include ZFS if it violates the GPL. They are just as bad for including it, and just as bad for including proprietary software. Canonical have 'not invented here' syndrome. Snap packages are a load of bs. They offer nothing over the xdg-app that GNOME project developed. Same with their other projects, like Unity, which was rather like GNOME 3 which they wanted to replace but somehow much worse. > "Ubuntu Ecosystem" It's not an ecosystem! It has nothing living in it, just sterile plastic, steel, and zeroes and ones! Don't repeat the stupid marketing bs. They want to lock people in to Ubuntu.

Wouldn't it be cool to have a CDE-based Trisquel!? I wonder how to go about doing such a thing.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Tor Browser Bundle: DRM deleted or not?
Using Firefox with the Cisco H264 plugin works fine, but what's the best method to get Abrowser/IceCat/Tor Browser fully capable to play the content? I've looked at guides installing libav/ffmpeg and while it says I am good at http://html5test.com, I get errors sometimes about invalid format types. Especially in the Tor Browswr. With Trisquel 8, it will go back to ffmpeg instead of avconv due to Debian and Ubuntu preferring the original and not the fork for future releases.
Re: [Trisquel-users] ZFS now available in Debian. Maybe its time to stop fighting it?
Debian's approach is much less evasive than the Ubuntu and is more ideal. Why does it need to be installed by default for desktop users? It is more of a server technology and if you are tech savvy enough to know how to use and administer ZFS, you are more than willing to manually install a package or compile from source manually for your specific setup. It shows that Canonical is more interested in phones and servers than desktops since that is where they can lock in service contracts and trademark licensing. It's a shame that Unity 8 is STILL not in a usable state on the desktop after many promises and Ubuntu 16.10 will not have it by default when it is released in October. We will see if Snap packages are adopted at all or remain in the Ubuntu ecosystem along with Unity and Mir.
Re: [Trisquel-users] ZFS now available in Debian. Maybe its time to stop fighting it?
Yeah... This is what makes me mad. It's similar to Fedoras slogan: "Freedom, Friends, First"... Oh my gnu!... It seems like false advertisements.
Re: [Trisquel-users] ZFS now available in Debian. Maybe its time to stop fighting it?
If Debian wanted to comply with the GNU FSDG, they would merely need to stop having contrib and non-free repositories on their official servers and not showing people how to install non-free software. They are free apart from that. I know some people here use Debian. I think they know about its flaws and that is fine. What I dislike is that Debian arbitrarily says they are a free distribution because contrib and non-free are not "officially" part of it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] ZFS now available in Debian. Maybe its time to stop fighting it?
I know some people here in Brazil which are blindly advocating Debian as a free system distribution, and this freaks me out because gNewSense isn't getting the lead. Some people here in Brazil advocate for gNewSense, and I support their advocacy. In both cases, one must understand that what you'll advocate depends on the expertise of the listeners (future users?), you can't simply tell people that come from Windows to use source based distributions like Ututo, as they'll have a hard time understanding it. However, making such ruinous compromise of recommending a non-free system distribution is almost unacceptable if it weren't due to the fact that Debian is (apparently) trying to comply with the GNU FSDG, but is still not something we could safely recommend to the general public. For the public interested in development, testing and such in-dept uses: perhaps. But not to the general public. There's going to be a talk advertising Debian as a 100% free system distribution in FISL (Forum Internacional do Software Livre) this year here in Brazil. And I will probably give up on going to all the editions of FISL until this and other issues aren't fixed and until the organizers don't start to follow the basic principles of administration/management: plan, organize, "direct" (sorry, my English skills fail me), and control. Right now, every single free software event here in Brazil seems to be accepting advertisements for non-free functional data or non-shareable non-functional data, for the sake of popularity, I guess. The only free software event that seems to have escaped from this madness is Software Freedom Day. All the others (FLISOL (Festival Latinoamericano de InstalaciĆ³n de Software Libre), GNUGRAF, Forum EspĆrito Livre, FISL, and so on) are biased.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Quickest and easiest way to rip a DVD straight to .iso
My disk writer/reader isn't working anymore. But I decided to simulate with Brasero. I cannot use Brasero to copy a CD/DVD to a disk image, but I tried using Brasero to make a disk image from files and directories, and after opening, Brasero, selecting "Create data project", selecting the files, and selecting "Record [or write] to image", there's a button at the right-side of the menu that let's you select where you want the image to be saved. Besides, you can also use the "cdrdao" package. Just remember that CDRDAO doesnot accept .cue files/sheets. You must convert these to .toc files (table of contents) which I find to be more friendlier to understand than the .cue files. CDRDAO is also supported by Brasero. Check the plug-ins window. To convert .cue files to .toc files, use either the "cue2toc" or the cueconvert command provided by the "cuetools" package. I'm unable to tell you which one is better because it's been three years since my last use of these packages.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Content sharing in schools
Besides, I recommend you to check out Moodle once again. As far as I can remember, it allows you to choose a license for each content you share, and also allows you to "re-use"/"re-share" the same content in the same Moodle instance in another forum topic, thus avoiding the need to upload your content again. However, unless I'm mistaken (and please don't take my words as valid here, check it out yourself), Moodle seems to be account centered, that means: unless the person has an account on the Moodle instance, he won't be able to open the link.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Nouveau graphics performance & free as in freedom.
I do hope so. It's a real shame i3/i5/i7s I feel are a no go as the Intel HD on my i7 worked perfectly and had some really good performance. The other thing I forgot to mention in my first post, is are there any additional freedom issues with using newer cards (except for the newest which I here there are issues with)?. My i7 has a GTX 580, which while I doubt would work well with a Core 2 Duo system and old DDR2 ram, seems to only require external proprietary firmware for video decoding like the 8400GS, and nothing more.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Nouveau graphics performance & free as in freedom.
The card still is useful without the proprietary firmware. I believe the CPU takes care of video decoding in that case.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Content sharing in schools
Please be careful with the first link. If possible, refer to the Free Software Directory or to a repository of a free system distribution. Here is what I found in the Free Software Directory so far (besides Moodle of course): * RosarioSIS (this one is new to the directory, and has built-in Moodle integration): http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/RosarioSIS * ILIAS: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Ilias * Claroline: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Claroline * TelEduc (developed at UNICAMP, a Brazilian university): http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/TelEduc * Manhali: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Manhali * Manhattan Virtual Classroom: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Manhattan_Virtual_Classroom * WhiteBoard: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/WhiteBoard There are others in the directory, but they are "crippleware" (free/libre with limited functionalities compared to the editions with the same program name, from same proprietors (or people endorsed by them) which has more functionalities and is considered non-free unless proven otherwise). Besides, I'm currently waiting for the opinions and voting of a proposal related to this issue with "crippleware but free/libre". The proposal is here: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Free_Software_Directory_talk:Requirements

Re: [Trisquel-users] Nouveau graphics performance & free as in freedom.
My computer has an Nvidia card, supported in Trisquel. It has 1GoB memory. It really does not give brilliant performance in games. I barely get 30FPS in SuperTuxKart. So I think it is mostly hit and miss. Nouveau gives 3D acceleration in things like GNOME which is all I use it for. However, patches have been submitted for Linux kernel 4.7. They significantly increase performance, apparently: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=23064 So don't lose hope yet. I will try them out with Super Tux Mart sometime.

[Trisquel-users] Nouveau graphics performance & free as in freedom.
I'm trying to use an older desktop system I have with a Intel Core 2 Duo CPU & Nvidia GT 8400GS to escape Intel's management engine - I hope. I'm yet to confirm this cpu model doesn't have it, but still better than my previous, an i7. I'm trying to play some old ioquake3 derived games (the most awesome of which is https://www.unvanquished.net/) but I'm getting really terrible framerates. Searching around I found this post from 2012 which has similarly bad results for the 8400: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article=nouveau_christmas_2012=1 . So I'm wondering if this is all I can expect? I'd like to get a solid 60FPS on some of these games. The 8400 is the only GPU available on the ThinkPenguin website and they recommend games like Doom 3 which I don't think would run for crap for me. The only difference is my 8400 only has 512MB VRAM while the model offered on ThinkPenguin has 1GB. That might make a big difference, I don't know. Maybe I have not got nouveau set up correctly? But I thought it should just work on kernel ~3.13 which I think Trisquel 7.0 uses by default? The other thing is, according to this page https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix/ , the 8400 still requires externally loaded firmware for hardware decoding, isn't this usually a problem for FSF "endorsement"?
[Trisquel-users] Content sharing in schools
Hello! The headmaster of a (fairly small) school I used to attend has recently been considering using the services of Google to share files (such as documents and presentations), usually made by teachers, with the students. Their idea was to use Google Drive and only share the files with students, but that would also require them to use or create a Google account, which really seems like a bad idea. The system the school uses now is custom-made. The problem with it is that it is somewhat difficult to use and needs a specialist (the creator) to make some changes. So they apparently want something that has a simple interface and will allow them to manage things by themselves. I would like to ask if anyone has experience with similar things in education, and if anyone has advice on what programs with simple interface one may employ to share files. Or, while at it, what programs can be used in schools in general. Would ownCloud make a good option here? Thank you in advance.

Tor is not the same as the Tor Browser Bundle. You do not need to contact the FSF. The Tor Browser Bundle is a special hardened Firefox respin. As soon as you make a "free" Tor Browser on a mere technicality (you can enable these plugins in GNU IceCat etc too, remember), it will have been updated, and then it will be your responisbility to keep up with their hectic release cycle, and if you did not you will be putting people in danger. Seriously, it is not in software repositories for a reason; it releases so rapidly the maintainers can't keep up! It seems you can't take no for an answer. It's your choice, whatever.
