Re: [Trisquel-users] Home email server
I agree. A simple automated device would help with this. I'd like to see something like this combined with GPG built-in and a simplified user interface.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Home email server
Here are some interesting blog posts related to running your own mail server * B. Kuhn on spam http://www.ebb.org/bkuhn/blog/2015/09/15/email.html * B. Mako Hill on the recipient's role https://mako.cc/copyrighteous/google-has-most-of-my-email-because-it-has-all-of-yours I think everybody should run their own, we don't need the current gatekeepers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
I can already tell you that the reason Luke did the 15.6" design rather than something smaller was because of popularity. He was wanting to do something smaller and I talked him out of it [sort of, I just pointed out the numbers didn't work well]. It comes down to demand. There is more demand (statically speaking) for 15.6" laptops than anything else. To reduce the risks we went with a 15.6" design. It actually was a really smart move because it cut the time required to produce a laptop. The design simply wouldn't have worked with a smaller screen. Also it was good that we did. The laptop helped us reach the goal. Had we gone with a smaller screen the crowd funding campaign might have failed. I'd actually be very worried about doing a smaller screen design without the cost of the crowd funding campaign being run prior to the development work being started. It might not be as expensive now that the 15.6" laptop is done and there are cards being produced. However the costs are still not non-existent. If we [TP] hadn't funded the development this campaign would not have succeeded. It would have cost twice as much if not more. A copy-cat attempted to do a modular computer and the campaign failed. They needed $320,000 USD to pull it off and didn't get anywhere near 20% funded. Luke's numbers I don't believe include the real cost of doing this work either. Normally you would take into account *an actual salary* and it would probably be $65,000 USD minimum, plus administrative costs, taxes, and so on would have increased it to $80,000 if not more. Then that doesn't include the cost of actually manufacturing samples or other work which might need to be done.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hey, did lckl upload the schematics yet for the eoma68 open hardware
I'd suggest asking for clarification...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Home email server
I haven't done this myself, but based on the little that I've read about this topic, the main components are an MTA, to implement SMTP, and an MDA, for getting your mail locally (through IMAP or POP3). Also DKIM and spam filtering, and perhaps virus filtering and webmail. There's a good guide here: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/02/how-to-run-your-own-e-mail-server-with-your-own-domain-part-1/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Home email server
Indeed. Set up a GNU/Linux box with Postfix with handle SMTP, Dovecot for POP and IMAP, and something for webmail. (I use Usermin for webmail http://webmin.com/usermin.html because it's so easily integrated with the rest of the system.) Add in procmail and SpamAssassin for anti-spam stuff and you've got an email server. There are many How To-type of documents online. I've been running my own email server since 1999. These programs are what I use but others can be substituted.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Home email server
Much appreciated, but I'd like to own the server my mail is on.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hey, did lckl upload the schematics yet for the eoma68 open hardware
I am sure the wait will be worth it. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
I am not completely sure what you mean by 240v ac into a 5V device, I am assuming you mean plugging the usb into the wrong slot... Usb devices that are meant to cause physical damage? never heard of that... maybe I will look it up. In all honesty, 13.3 inch laptop would also be a design too I would be interested in... though I only know of one other person that I remembered saying they wanted that so, 998 short at the moment. But you know what, I am interested now. Thanks for the reply.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best free software friendly router
Cris, does Trisquel's part of donated money goes to some Libre project like routers?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Home email server
Posteo.de 1$ a month is an extremely trustworthy email website look it up, openmailbox.org is an okay one also, with one exception, they do track you when your not in the webmail login area or logged in. Those two are my recommended picks though. both are under free software licenses. and posteo.de has no cookies whatsoever. I use privacybadger and many other addons for blocking scripts so those two are your best bet. Openmailbox.org is also free by default.
[Trisquel-users] Home email server
Hi everyone, This whole Clinton email server has got me thinking. I currently use an email service that is part of the U.S. PRISM surveillance program. I'd like to change this but I don't trust my mail to other services. How difficult and expensive would it be to set up a home email server, register a domain on a free/open source DNS, and run it myself. Additionally (and why I post about it here) would Trisquel be useful in making this happen? I don't have a formal education in computer science but I'm moderately knowledgeable. Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo and yahoo.net
searx is da best.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best free software friendly router
I'm confused now. Does that mean that I can't buy the mentioned router from you at this moment? If yes, I still don't understand why exactly. What's your suggestion in the meantime? I need a new router right now, unfortunately. If you don't sell this router, I would have to buy this model from some other place and flash it myself or turn to your competitors. However, I don't want to do that, as I like your shop, its ideology and this new modular laptop and I wpuld like to support that.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best free software friendly router
I may have answered this already, but here is why we don't have the new models released. We're working on a dual-band 802.11n router. It's done. Problem is we need $$$. It's something like $30,000+ USD for just this one model which we don't have at the moment. Hopefully I'll pull the cash together shortly for it. There has been a lot going on and the profits on the new router will be seriously lower making it even more difficult to make work. The lower end router would be easier, but the work on that isn't complete.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
yes, i'm saying that it's a lot longer than just a year's wait. unless someone else does it and they contract me to ensure that it's compliant with the EOMA68 specification. remember, you're a list of "one person" - we now need at least... 999 more to justify the development cost. usb attacks well, if you put 240v AC into a 5V device you get everything you deserve to happen! so assuming that you're not going to do that, then there should be no difficulties using a usb flash drive. everything that you should normally expect to be successful by booting any computer off of a usb drive you should expect to also be successful here. there is no difference: it's a computer. if however you are specifically asking, "is there any hardware-level protection against idiots who plug in hardware usb devices that are designed to cause physical damage" the answer's a definite "NO". too expensive, too low a risk to justify the cost. that having been said if somebody wants to pay me to do that type of design research to protect against hardware-level USB attacks i'm quite happy to do that.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best free software friendly router
That seems less than optimal. I probably would try to inform him of the situation via https://www.thinkpenguin.com/contact
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best free software friendly router
I already contacted him but didn't get a reply so far, which is why I tried to ask here whether you know of some other sources I could use to get a new router and help free software at the same time.
[Trisquel-users] Best free software friendly router
Hello guys, I just have one very quick question for you: Which routers do you use (with free firmwares, of course) and where did you get them from? I was actually planning to buy a new router for myself and wanted to go for the FSF-certified TPE-NWIFIROUTER (https://www.fsf.org/news/thinkpenguin-wireless-router-now-fsf-certified-to-respect-your-freedom). I figured it would maybe be the best idea to buy it directly from ThinkPenguin but on their website I just get a "Access denied" message: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/free-software-wireless-n-broadband-router-gnu-linux-tpe-nwifirouter2. I know that Chris must be extremely busy these days but I would still be happy to buy a router from him. ;-) Any ideas on how I would go about getting one? Thank you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo and yahoo.net
Searx.me is better in my humble opinion. also, it is free software completely.
Re: [Trisquel-users] name of the computer on the linus picture?
this netbook does not respect your freedom in any way. go to a second hand store and get one of the netbooks that are designed to run windows 7. they are good.
Re: [Trisquel-users] name of the computer on the linus picture?
I found this netbook https://www.amazon.co.uk/Laptop-Netbook-Android-Latest-Software/dp/B006HDQEAO/ref=pd_sim_sbs_147_8?ie=UTF8=1=1WGF9JJC85QV1CFWMAMW. Do not know where I can buy cabinet with keyboard and display alone.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo and yahoo.net
I just visit addons.mozilla.org and add "duckduckgo HTML" as a search engine.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo and yahoo.net
You can add the "HTML" version easily. When you do a search, you know how it makes you follow a link? Click on that, and from there, you should be able to add the search method that doesn't have that extra click.

Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo and yahoo.net
Yes, no problems when Javascript is disabled. However IceCat uses Javascript version of DDG via its search toolbar by default. DDG says that it's a privacy-oriented search engine but if user uses it with Javascript and without ad/script blockers so whether is concern about user privacy in this case?
