Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Trisquel 8 use hwe-16.04 and hwe-16.04-edge kernels?
I don't know what the plan is in this regard, or if there even is one at this early stage, but regardless of what happens https://jxself.org/linux-libre/ will still be there.
Re: [Trisquel-users] First development alpha iso images of Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas"
Audacity and vlc are good multimedia apps for the devfault. Icedove and abrowser for web, and pidgin for messaging. I'll likely come up with more app suggestions.
Re: [Trisquel-users] First development alpha iso images of Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas"
+1 on Trisquel 7's default printer utility. I've always had problems with it (on a few different HP printers and computers) whereas system-config-printer-gnome works just fine.
[Trisquel-users] Re : First development alpha iso images of Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas"
In my humble opinion, OggConvert should not be included in the default install anymore. If you want to replace it (I transcode but I am not certain it is such a common need among the users), prefer Transmageddon: http://www.linuxrising.org Also, "system-config-printer-gnome", which was in Trisquel 6 and before, is much better than Trisquel 7's default printer management utility.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Trisquel boycott by Libreboot
Define "needs". GNU predates Linux, most of GNU can run on different kernels (including Windows), GNU GRUB boots any kernel, Linux uses the GLIBC and is compiled with GCC (Linux would not even be born without those two GNU projects), it is under the GNU GPL, etc.

See 2016 isn't so bad after all. Thanks to everyone involved! I will give my Xmas donation a bit earlier this year. ;) Would have done it anyway.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Updates for Trisquel
The whole idea of GNU is to free users, contrary to Solaris.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to configure "Activities overview" on trisquel
You need to install GNOME Shell. This command will do the trick: sudo apt install gnome-session gnome-shell
Re: [Trisquel-users] The worst thing happened on my laptop. DRM.
What you're describing is nonsense and I think it's obvious that you're trolling. It's not possible for a CD drive to prevent the OS from saving a copy of the data that the CD drive is sending to it. The only way for DRM to work is for particular proprietary programs which are a part of a conspiracy to be required to read the data. This is possible for "corrupt discs": optical discs which are not compatible with the CD standard and require proprietary software to read. But the actual CD standard (which almost everyone uses) does not support DRM. Ergo, it's impossible to restrict what can be done with a CD in this way. DVDs are a different story, but the encryption on DVDs is so pathetic that you can break it by brute-forcing anyway (see: libdvdcss).
Re: [Trisquel-users] The worst thing happened on my laptop. DRM.
>> My laptop can read CD-ROM but cannot copy it. Are you trying to copy from CD-ROM on Windows or GNU/Linux? Generally, this kinda stuff is software-based, not hardware-based, so I'm more inclined to tihnk it's the former. If you're using GNU/Linux, maybe try a different method? Let's not jump the gun and say it's hardware DRM before we're sure. >> will accept donations. Good luck with that. >> If I will receive enough money for 2 laptops — maybe I will stream DESTROYING and TRASHING my laptop. Or killing it with fire. Because it must die. [Trisquel-users] How to configure "Activities overview" on trisquel
I want to configure my Trisquel Gnu system so that when I push the Super key, I get the following beheviour: https://wiki.gnome.org/Gnome3CheatSheet#Activities_Overview If I want to search for an application, I then just have to type it in search area The default Gnome installation does not allow it on Trisquel. I use: - Trisquel 7.0 - gnome 1:3.8+4ubuntu3 amd64 Full GNOME Desktop Environment Thank you.

Re: [Trisquel-users] First development alpha iso images of Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas"
Hi all, First of all thanks for the pre-release and the lot of work. I would like to propose some apps I like, and I think they are practical to have in a basic install. It's just a suggestion so do whatever you like... simple system things: mc iptraf mtr filezilla? lolcat :P for graphical apps I see it in gnu systems they usually like inkscape and gimp I think it's a good basic combo, but if we can I would add darktable hugin and mat. I think mat (mat-gui) is essential when we post pictures somewhere, cleaning private info from pictures can be a good idea... Darktable and hugin is not so general user thing I know, but Darktable can be great if you have a digital camera. just a not that gv always opens all the pdf and ps documents. for audio things: audacity came to tails for example and I can see the point, if you need to make audiorecording, cut it, conversion it's fine... I would put in fmit, which is the best tuning application I thing, 'coz I have many musicians around me. vlc or smplayer would be great... if we have an option keepassx would be fantastic many many thank for you work cheers, petergk

Great news indeed.
[Trisquel-users] Will Trisquel 8 use hwe-16.04 and hwe-16.04-edge kernels?
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/RollingLTSEnablementStack In January of 2017, Ubuntu 16.04.2 will adapt a new way to deliver the latest kernels in two forms. One that will always deliver the kernel of the most recent release (hwe-16.04) and one that is more of a "bleeding edge" one that is hwe-16.04-edge. Do you think that Trisquel will deblob this new kernel as well? I think it would be nice to have as many of us like to have more recent kernels from the repos. If you don't want to read the link, here is the gist: Description This represents the path where HWE Stack users on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will automatically upgrade to newer HWE Stacks until reaching the final 18.04 HWE Stack in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Users will then remain on this final 18.04 HWE Stack for the remaining supported life of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. If the user fully upgrades to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, they will remain on the GA Kernel delivered in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and will not continue rolling forward on HWE Stacks delivered for 18.04. This is the path that users will be put on if choosing to install the HWE Stack from the 16.04.2 or newer LTS point release. Packages The suggested exact meta packages names are: linux-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-lowlatency-hwe-16.04 These meta packages will resolve to the appropriate linux-image--hwe-16.04 and linux-headers--hwe-16.04. See example diagram below. In the event we need to provide extended support for customers for a specific HWE kernel, we can roll out a linux--lts- indirect meta package into a private PPA. Update Schedule We will roll to the newest HWE Stack offering around the time of the point release introducing that HWE Stack. This is approximately 3mo after the original series is released. As an example, the 16.04.2 point release should take place in January 2017. At this time the linux-headers-generic-hwe-16.04 and linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 would point to the new v4.8 based kernel. hwe-16.04-edge Description This represents the path that provides users early access to the upcoming HWE Stack that is to be released next for the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. The aim is to provide this early preview in order to allow users to test the upcoming HWE Stack prior to the automatic upgrade taking place. This should help ensure a smooth upgrade and transition. Once hwe-16.04-edge aligns with the hwe-16.04 target, users on the hwe-16.04-edge path will transition back to the more conservative hwe-16.04 path and continue being upgraded until reaching the final 18.04 HWE Stack in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Users will then remain on the final 18.04 HWE Stack for the remaining supported life of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. If the user fully upgrades to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, they will remain on the GA Kernel delivered in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and will not continue rolling forward on HWE Stacks delivered for 18.04. Packages The suggested exact meta packages names are: linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge linux-lowlatency-hwe-16.04-edge As with the hwe-16.04 path, these -edge meta packages would resolve to linux-image--hwe-16.04-edge and linux-headers--hwe-16.04-edge Update Schedule As mentioned, the kernel version provided by the hwe-16.04-edge path will provide early access to the newer kernel version up to ~6mo prior to the hwe-16.04 path receiving the same. We will introduce the newer edge kernel at the beginning of each point release. For example, 16.04.1 released in July, 2016. At that time, hwe-16.04-edge would point to the Yakkety kernel currently undergoing development for the 16.10 release. This will allow for a maximum ~6mo baking period before being officially delivered and supported in the 16.04.2 time frame. Once both hwe-16.04-edge and hwe-16.04 both point to the final Yakkety HWE kernel version, hwe-16.04-edge users users will be transitioned to track the more conservative hwe-16.04ore of a test bed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How could trisquel help in avoiding hacking and avoiding a disaster that could kill hundreds or thousands of innocent people

[Trisquel-users] How could trisquel help in avoiding hacking and avoiding a disaster that could kill hundreds or thousands of innocent people
SF Muni hack contained. Next transit hack could be train wreck The San Francisco transit system avoided paying a ransom and restored its systems. But the hack shows US infrastructure is vulnerable. File it under "Bad, but could have been worse." The SF Municipal Transportation Agency fell victim to a hacking attack in which someone or some group tried to extort about $73,000 from the transit service in exchange for giving back control of its computer systems. Rather than pay ransom, the agency, called Muni by locals, took back control after three days. While Muni was restoring its systems, cybersecurity experts ended up hacking the transit hacker, poring through the servers and emails used by whoever is behind the attack and sharing the information with reporters. Hacks of public services and government systems are becoming routine. In 2015, a hack of the US Office of Personnel Management led to the theft of data of more than 22 million federal employees. During the countdown to the 2016 US election, hackers accessed data on 200,000 Illinois voters from the state's voter registration database. With the hack on Muni, it's clear attacks on government-run infrastructure are possible -- and the next hack on a transit agency could be much more dangerous than this one was. n fact, this might be the rare hack that doesn't turn into a PR disaster. That's because Muni, which runs San Francisco's bus, light rail and trolley car systems, had a backup of its system and no customer data was stolen. Muni lost money by giving away free rides over the weekend, but it didn't pay the 100 bitcoins in ransom demanded by a hacker or hackers calling themselves "Andy Saolis." Instead, Muni restored its systems with help from the agency's internal tech team. What's more, the hack wasn't as bad as the hacker claimed in an email sent to CNET and other news agencies, a Muni spokesman said. "Our customer payment systems were not hacked," Muni said in a statement Monday. "Also, despite media reports -- no data was accessed from any of our servers." Thomas Pore, director of IT and services at cybersecurity company Plixer, said the the attack could have been "far worse" if Muni hadn't been able to restore its systems from backup copies of its data. The attack also lost some of its oomph because it didn't directly affect transit service in San Francisco. Instead, the hacker locked out some Muni personnel from their workstation computers and left the agency without access to some of its systems over the weekend. The attack started Friday and plagued the agency until Sunday night. The so-called Saolis gave a different account of the attack, gloating about his ability to compromise Muni systems. The hacker claimed Monday to have stolen 30 gigabytes of Muni employee, customer and technical data, in addition to hacking payment kiosks. Saolis has been responding to questions sent to an email address registered with Yandex.com, a Russian email service. The email address was displayed by the attacker on Muni workstation screens. In broken English, Saolis detailed these supposed achievements and said he was showing the world how bad the cybersecurity at Muni is. "Welcome !" he wrote in an email. Saolis also provided a Bitcoin wallet in case anyone wanted to send a donation in gratitude for his hack. Muni is the bad guy here, Saolis seemed to insist. "They give Your Money and everyday Rich more! But they don't Pay for IT Security and using very old system's !" Saolis wrote in the email. The fact that Muni was able to restore its systems from backups suggests the agency is following the FBI's general recommendations for fighting this type of attack. Called ransomware, the attack often gets victims to click on malicious links, then downloads malicious software that scrambles up the victim's data. Then hackers demand a ransom to get it back. Saolis reportedly asked for 100 Bitcoin (about $73,000) in return for decrypting the agency's systems. Beware of ransomware Pay up or else: Ransomware is the hot hacking trend of 2016 Hackers sweet-talked their way into the CIA director's email account Hacking trust: Fears of election-tampering shake faith in US democracy Muni "never considered paying the ransom," the agency's statement said. Muni doesn't yet have an estimate on how much money it lost by giving away free rides over the weekend, said spokesman Paul Rose. He added that the ransomware used to target Muni spreads through links in pop-up ads. While Muni is looking smart right now for backing up its data and systems, the hacker, it seems has become the hacked. Security writers Brian Krebs of KrebsOnSecurity and Thomas Fox-Brewster of Forbes each reported Tuesday that a cybersecurity expert contacted them to say they'd accessed the servers of the person behind the Muni hack. The expert, who spoke with
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to change DNS?
Tramposo A smart person will try to change the dns on the router settings but if the router is locked out on that option, then you have to change on your computer. In the other hand I use OpenNic to search for the closer geographic location https://servers.opennicproject.org/ example: for my world location I will use either Singapore, honk Kong or japan. I will start pinging the dns from your location to study the latency then I will start using tracer to study how many hops from your computer to the final destination. For example if you ping with a latency of 57ms or 150ms is a very close. but if your latency is lower in 200 ms or higher then you are too far away. I always using opennic servers. There is Ways to change your dns on your adsl. It works for me. 1- How to configure a PPPoE internet connection on a Debian box Assuming your computer has a direct connection (with no router between it and the DSL modem), the configuration is pretty straightforward. Here’s the tutorial for beginners: Login and elevate your permissions to ‘super user': su Make sure the resolvconf package is installed: apt-get install resolvconf Create the directory /usr/etc/ppp: mkdir -p /usr/etc/ppp Open your favorite editor (I’m using vi/vim here, so some commands are specific to that editor, like ‘vi’ to use the editor and ‘ :wq’ to write and close. Edit; You may find the Nano editor easier to use), create a new file and enter as many OpenNIC nameserver IPs as you like in, your nearest ones are here. vi /usr/etc/ppp/resolv.conf.opennic Enter the following: (The IPs shown here are German, you would probably want the nearest servers to you). nameserver 78.138.97.33 nameserver 178.63.26.172 nameserver 2a00:e10:1000:10:1586:0:33:53 rotate Write and save the file :wq Note: The “rotate” option helps dividing the requests between the nameservers listed. Create the following little script: vi /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/zzz_opennic_resolvconf #!/bin/sh # some providers insist on the 'usepeerdns' option, hence # we reinitialize the resolver to opennic servers after # all is done. this hook script will be run automatically by # pppd after it successfully established a connection. set -e # before we start: if anything went wrong with pppd, the $PPP... # variables will not exist. test -n "$PPP_IFACE" || exit 0 # Logging: use /var/log/ppp-ipupdown.log if it exists (then it is open # for writing, see ../ip-up). Else use syslog: blather () { local whereto if [ -e /var/log/ppp-ipupdown.log ]; then whereto="echo $0: $@" else whereto="logger -i -t $0 $@" fi eval $whereto } SYSTEM_RCONF="/etc/ppp/resolv.conf" # the file we just created: LOCAL_RCONF="/usr/etc/ppp/resolv.conf.opennic" test -f $SYSTEM_RCONF || { blather "$SYSTEM_RCONF does not exist. Exiting."; exit 0; } test -f $LOCAL_RCONF || { blather "$LOCAL_RCONF does not exist. Exiting."; exit 0; } cat $LOCAL_RCONF | /sbin/resolvconf -a $PPP_IFACE cp $LOCAL_RCONF $SYSTEM_RCONF blather "Resolver configured for OpenNIC namespace." Write and save the file :wq Make the script executable chmod 0755 /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/zzz_opennic_resolvconf Restart your network: /etc/init.d/networking restart And that’s it! Enjoy!

MATE was the best choice at this point. With Trisquel 9, the team should also take a look at Budgie as the Budgie version will be official with 17.04 onwards.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel boycott by Libreboot
No one should donate to the FSF until these threads die and the dude is prosecuted for obvious libel. There's your "harm" that dude has done. For so long as the troll is allowed to continue the libel, and these threads do not stop, forget donating, forget patches. Such is the logical result of the troll's effort to begin with; except this time the boycott is because the FSF apparently likes to be bullied. The FSF must enjoy playing the pariah. Besides, the FSF is not extreme enough. Start a new organization tied to the general feeling of oppression in society. The need for software freedom is only one symptom of what should be characterized as the rebellion of the productive forces against the narrow conditions of capitalist appropriation (profit) that the productive forces have long ago outgrown. Again, the FSF is a waste of money since not only does it maintain the conditions it should be opposing; but the FSF also likes to be bullied at the expense of donors.

I never said nor have I thought you were "dumb" and I am in no way "condescending". I just pointed out that I wrote to build the dependencies for a package and you did that for another package. You should know by now that I am nothing but helpful and nice. I also like and tend to joke. I made a joke, and to make it more clear it was a joke I also left you a nice emoticon to point out it was a joke. No offense was intended. Anyway, are you missing sources repository? Mit-scheme is in your repository and the build-dep command **should** work. Should = MUST work.
