Re: [Trisquel-users] [Poll] Should Trisquel 9 be Based on Debian?
I do think it's French, but we pronounce it "MAR-chent" (like "merchant", but with the "A" from "car" instead of the "E"). My grandfather at my dad's side was apparently adamant that he was British and not French (he came from Canada), so who knows.
[Trisquel-users] trouble installing 32-bit Flidas
I downloaded the i686 ISO from http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso and used Startup Disc Creator in Belenos to create a bootable USB drive. I then rebooted and selected "Search ISOLINUX menu (USB)" from the libreboot GRUB menu, and got error: syntax error. error: Incorrect command. error: syntax error. Press any key to continue I then did the exact same thing using the same USB drive with the Uruk beta ISO, and I was able to boot into Uruk with no problems, so I don't think it's a problem with libreboot or the USB drive. I then tried downloading the Flidas ISO again and starting over, and the same error occurred. Any ideas as to what is going wrong? Thanks!

Useful information should actually be copied in the Wiki documentation.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Mint Cindy (LMDE 3) not yet removes nonfree
Arch has the two usual problems: there's no clear policy about what software can be included, and nonfree blobs are shipped with their kernel, Linux. Arch also has no policy about not distributing nonfree software through their normal channels. https://www.gnu.org/distros/common-distros.html

Teach them. Use http://meet.jit.si or http://vroom.im for instance.

Some improvements would be great I find the Debian http://forums.debian.net/ very good, one has to keep in mind the different languages sections.

[Trisquel-users] Forum Moderation Idea
Has there ever been any consideration to having topics within the forum rather than having the single stream of consciousness we currently have? Ubuntu's forums have topics like "Desktop Environments", "Security", or more philosophical-like topics. Obviously we wouldn't need as many as Ubuntu, but having a few key one's might make it easier for people to find what they are looking for as our search function is often lacking in finding older posts that may still be helpful.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [Poll] Should Trisquel 9 be Based on Debian?
My mind's reading voice pronounces your last name like a French word. Is there a more Anglicized way to say it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] [Poll] Should Trisquel 9 be Based on Debian?
Stop fragmenting labor. What you are doing is harmful and helps nobody. Help an existing project or don't help at all. Your little pet project is a waste of labor, and you should be ashamed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to keep Trisquel updated (security updates)
What security updates are you not receiving on Trisquel 7? I receive regular updates each time I run the appropriate commands.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mint Cindy (LMDE 3) not yet removes nonfree
Mint has always rubbed me the wrong way. "Can you install Linux Mint on my punkyouter if I give you this giant zucchini?" "No, but I can install the Cinnamon desktop if you're into flavours of toothpaste!"
[Trisquel-users] Re : Mint Cindy (LMDE 3) not yet removes nonfree
Sounds like Mint Tea driver(Scania Truck) that runs into an Arch on the Silk Road..haha!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mint Cindy (LMDE 3) not yet removes nonfree
I don't know about Arch. I've never used it. What does that have to do with Mint?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to keep Trisquel updated (security updates)
Latest security patches, i.e. cutting edge securities, you instead need Parabola but it is pacman based, if you need a Deb system Deb testing w/o contrib or nonfree is best to you.
[Trisquel-users] GNU Ada lamguage: A good reference for our GNU system commerce?
I have proudly announced an GNU OS and build system project for commerce, and our GNU wiki has told that GNU Ada language is a beneficial free software commerce, they dnt sell sources or binaries but sell LTS contracts. But my business model is, the only rolling system and build service are sources-based only and gratis, like the Ada language offering sources and binaries by gratis. But 2 editions of LTS systems are, sources-based edition not needing payments and worries of hardware architectures, but needing knowledge to handle sources. Finally there is a paid and binaries-based edition of my LTS system, specific for embedded hardware systems, like the Ada language selling LTS contracts. For EVERY editions you dnt need to worry for licenses which every nonfreeware are needed to be excluded, for what we are required to be an GNU system.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mint Cindy (LMDE 3) not yet removes nonfree
How about Arch? According to the few Debian channels, main:DFSG libre software w/o contrib or nonfree deps contrib: DFSG libre software but w nonfree deps nonfree: DFSG nonfreeware Backing to the Arch channels, which are "main", "contrib", or "nonfree"? "core" is main and any others are contrib? I need to confirm from the Arch forums.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [URGENT] Parabola and Trisquel MISSING in PRISM-break!
I NO LONGER use Google Play since these days and switched to F-droid and thanks, my mobile system is AOKP (I was used to try Lineage and experiences are NG due to high unstability), my mobile hardware is Samsung J715 and I care how much nonfree firmware there still are from my AOKP.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [URGENT] Parabola and Trisquel MISSING in PRISM-break!
I am still needed to use just few nonfree apps due to my legacy needs to contact between friends, and I no longer make and receive calls anymore to fully defend against malicious calls those are common in my country, there are PLENTY stupid people and they fully and unknowingly ignore free software.
[Trisquel-users] Re : [URGENT] Parabola and Trisquel MISSING in PRISM-break!
If you have to use a cell phone, Replicant + F-droid is the best. The second best solution (Replicant only runs on old models and not all their peripherals are supported) is the Librem 5, which will include some proprietary drivers. Then, LineageOS (full of proprietary drivers) + F-Droid. Never install Google Apps if you care about your freedom and privacy.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Uruk GNU/Linux 2.0 (Alpha)
Not even two weeks ago, you were recommending in *this* thread to not have swap: https://trisquel.info/forum/uruk-gnulinux-20-beta-2#comment-122235 It was a bad recommendation... but having 16 GiB of swap on a system with 4 GiB of RAM is not a good recommendation either. It is a waste o disk space. Explaining in more details: If the system does not have swap and runs out of RAM, the kernel kills a process. It may happen even if the system has a huge amount of RAM, e.g., after running for hours a program suffering from a memory leak triggered in some special condition. The choice of the process to kill is rather arbitrary: the kernel may not kill the faulty process. If the system has swap and runs out of RAM, it becomes slow. Unbearably slow. I measured: reading data on my SSD is about 50 times slower than on my RAM, 150 times if the data is on HDD. Nobody will have the patience to use such a system until 16 GiB of swap are filled! Noticing that her system has become slow, the user saves her work (she cannot in the previous situation, without swap), maybe run 'top' (or another system monitor) to discover what process eats up the memory resources, and chooses what program (probably that one) to close to free some memory. Hibernating a system is dumping the main memory onto the swap (after zipping it). No user will hibernate an unbearably slow system that is swapping. Consequently, having as much swap as RAM is enough. If hibernation is never used, swap is still needed but 1 GiB looks enough for a desktop system. For server systems, an alert should automatically be sent to the administrator is the system runs out of RAM. The intervention (figuring out the faulty program and closing it) is delayed in comparison with a desktop system, with the user sitting in front of the screen. That is why server systems had better have more swap.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to keep Trisquel updated (security updates)
Hi Yoda ;-) Gd_Scania certainly missunderstood you, Trisquel 7 & 8 user's wait till the security updates are provided by Trisquel's lead developer Ruben.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to keep Trisquel updated (security updates)
I really don’t understand your answer! I’m not looking for the latest package version, since I’m not suffering from “versionitis”, but let’s say that I’m running Trisquel 7 and some of the packages have not being updated are waiting to receive a security update. What the do you do? What the people who use Trisquel do? 1 Keep waiting for the official security patch 2 look for Ubuntu, Debian package and update the package yourself 3 delete the package 4 or try to create a Trisquel package and submit it back to the community I’m a Slackware user and that’s some of the things that I can do to keep my system with the latest security patches, so what is the common wisdom here with the Trisquel community? I’m not bashing at the developers and/or the diestro itself but I have been thinking on switching to Trisquel and I would like to see what can I expect or not, or what I’m heading off.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mint Cindy (LMDE 3) not yet removes nonfree
They have never done that to my knowledge. Don't you remember that the Mint team doesn't care about this stuff? They've always thrown all software into the same place with no regard for whether it's libre or proprietary.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [URGENT] Parabola and Trisquel MISSING in PRISM-break!
Even if your device runs only libre software, connecting to the telephone network with it allows your location to be triangulated. If you would like to send and receive phone calls and text messages without being tracked, JMP allows you to do so through the internet.
