I removed alacarte and now there is just one "Main Menu". Good enough for me. Thanks!

I think mozo is the correct menu editor. The other menu editors I am aware of are alacarte and menulibre. I just installed both, and their appear as 'Main Menu' and 'Menu Editor' respectively, so it is possible that the extra menu editor you have installed is alacarte. $ sudo apt remove alacarte If that doesn't work, do the following for each of the menu editors that appear in Control Center. - launch the menu editor - from a terminal, run 'xprop' - click on the window of the menu editor - in the terminal output, look for the line beginning 'WM_CLASS(STRING) =' to get the name of the menu editor One of the menu editors should be mozo. Once you know the name of the other one, uninstall it. signature.asc Description: PGP signature

[Trisquel-users] Chokepoint ratings systems are censorship
masonh...@gmail.com wrote: I agree that the rating system is not really necessary and a little silly. Any ratings system or means of hiding/highlighting posts that affect other people's reading by default is censorship, which is far worse than a little silly. It doesn't matter if the ratings come from users, admins, or via some subset of users (elites). The ratings ought to be objectionable on that ground alone. Leave it up to individual users to pick a means of reading the posts that let them decide how to score such that only they'll see the effect of those scores and only they know what their scoring regime is. Then the rating system stops being censorship and becomes user's preferences. But that's never what single-point-of-censorship admins want. They want control over the users and they want to spy on the filters used (which is why they want to implement the filtering server-side). Hence admins set up web forums, mailing lists, and other chokepoints instead of netnews groups copied across many independent servers (currently the discussion technology that most respects our freedom of speech). I suggest looking into what it would take to either move the discussion forum to a widely-carried Usenet group or establishing such a group.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Who's On Mastodon?
I've been an active user on a GNU Social/Qvitter server for a couple of years ([at]strypey[at]quitter.se). But recently the site is down as often as it's up, so I'm seriously considering my options. I'd like to try my hand at self-hosting, but before I make a decision on which of the many apps to try setting up first, I want to try them all as a user on existing instances. So far I've also tried; Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendi.ca, Hubzilla. So far, I'm leaning towards Hubzilla, because the neat Nomadic Identity feature means it doesn't matter so much if my instance is a bit patchy at first, it supports all the federation protocols (Zot, OStatus, ActivityPub, and maybe DFRN too, if that's still a thing), and it has the largest range of features (events calendars, wiki, forum, and many others).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Either the rating system goes, or I will
I think the voting serves its purpose and very well. Only rarely it will be used for minor trolling. If this annoys, it does only to a lesser quantile of users.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Suggestions on How to Clean-Up a Trisquel 7 to 8 Installation
Same issue here. The documentation is installed along the program. The click on the button should execute that command: $ yelp /usr/share/help/C/gnome-app-install/gnome-app-install.xml

Re: [Trisquel-users] Either the rating system goes, or I will
Hello, quantumgravity. This thread got a few posts today. Then I noticed being of this thread. May I ask you question? This thread was made about five months ago. How do you feel the difference of the situation between then and now? I mean, the use of voting of users. I do not know the then situation. As some of users would know though, >And if somebody doesnt like an opinion, then he can _reply_. That's right, not pressing a button, not hiding the post or marking it red, just replying with a valid reason and some constructive points. I agree with this your comment, or rather, I have stated almost same words once or twice. In short, it seems for me that, I am afraid but frankly, the some of ethical people are becoming trolls. Go for a mummy and come home mummified.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Suggestions of How to Clean Up a Trisquel 7 to 8 Install?
PackageKit provides an interface that is different from the one installed by default with Trisquel 8 (Mini or not). It is an alternative.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Suggestions of How to Clean Up a Trisquel 7 to 8 Install?
I think the packages are called 'gnome'packagekit' and 'nautilus' respectively.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Suggestions of How to Clean Up a Trisquel 7 to 8 Install?
Install the "gnome-app-install" package (installed by default on both Trisquel 8 and Trisquel 8 Mini); Remove the "nautilus" package (not installed by default on both Trisquel 8 and Trisquel 8 Mini);

[Trisquel-users] Suggestions of How to Clean Up a Trisquel 7 to 8 Install?
Hi everyone, I want to open a conversation about how to maintain a system that is upgrading from previous installs of Trisquel. I know some of you may shrug and say, hey just do a clean install, its WAY easier. Howver, I think we learn more about GNU + Linux if we learn to fix our problems where they are as well. I encountered some issues that I managed to get through during my upgrades which involved needing to make sure I didn't have any non-Trisquel installations and Repositories existing on my computers. Here are a couple of my issues. Please feel free to add your own. 1) After Trisquelizing from Ubuntu 14.04 to Trisquel 7 and then upgrading to Trisquel 8, I noticed the "Add/Remove Programs" GUI app seems to not exist. How do I install it? 2) After upgrading to Trisquel 8 from Trisquel 7, the "Files" file explorer still exists eventhough it looks broken under "MATE" (the default DE of Trisquel 8). How do I remove the "Files" app?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Testing The Trisquel 8 Upgrade Process
Thank you both. I was able to proceed much further by dpkg purging the packages with conflicts, rebooting, and then doing apt-get upgrade and/or apt-get -f install and/or apt-get upgrade and/or apt-get autoremove and finally apt-get dist-upgrade again to get my missing packages. I think I have the tools and techniques needed to get it further along. Thanks again. We would need quite a build farm and a bit of time to programmatically test every combination of existing trisquel 7 installs upgrading to trisquel 8, and even then that would not include ppas. I didn't have any ppas enabled at the time of upgrade, but I do recall doing some dpkg installs a while ago. I think it was related to multiarch. If I had it to do over again I would probably just do a fresh install, but my system is working well enough that I probably won't.
[Trisquel-users] Re : AMD Graphics Driver + Printer Drivers +Video downloaders.
Just three additions to mason's excellent reply: If your computer has Intel graphics integrated to the processor, you can use that instead of the video card; it would work much better (but AMD video cards usually come with AMD processors...); You can install the driver for the printer (and youtube-viewer) in the live session to test whether that is working; no need to install Trisquel to test it; There are other solution to download/play videos from YouTube and more: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/play-videos-without-using-flash (I personally use ViewTube and ViewTube+).
[Trisquel-users] Re : Hello friends :) I just installed Trisquel-mini, and I have a few issues that I've encountered that I hope you can help me with
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/CanonicalLtd/lightdm/master/NEWS says the support for Wayland sessions was added in LightDM 1.15.2. Trisquel 8 has LightDM 1.18.3. So it should work. Not that I tried though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Either the rating system goes, or I will
I'm in two minds about the voting system. In a previous life I was a newswire clerk on an Indymedia site, one of the volunteers who moderated articles and comments posted on the site. Some clerks copped lots of abuse for doing their job, particularly the female ones I noticed. We often debated replacing that system with a user-moderation system like the ones used here, for the sorts of reasons given by MagicBanana, but we never did because of concerns about implicit bias etc. I've definitely seen the voting system here badly abused. On one potentially libellous thread about Technoethical, a number of perfectly reasonable responses by the operator of Technoethical, explaining the circumstances that let to the complaints in the OP, were downvoted until hidden. On the other hand, I've also opened up some hidden comments out of curiosity, and found nonsense and abuse that I am really glad isn't shown to new users who come to the forums (with JS on) for support and fellowship. I've suggested in other threads that the mods consider moving the forums to Discourse, which has a number of baked-in mechanisms for discouraging unhelpful posting in forums. If we stay with the current system, I would suggest two fairly trivial changes that might help improve the use of the voting system: * change the number of votes required to hide a post to 5. If a posting really is inappropriate, there are enough responsible regulars for it to attract 5 downvotes, but posts are less likely to be hidden for trivial or inappropriate reasons * put a string of text to the left of the voting buttons saying something like 'violates community guidelines' (linked to them), and a string of text to the right of the voting buttons saying something like 'abides by community guidelines' (linked to them). I think a number of users are mistaking appropriate / inappropriate buttons for agree / disagree buttons. BTW At the top of the community guidelines there needs to be a short paragraph explaining how the user-driven moderation works, maybe linked to another page with a fuller explanation.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Either the rating system goes, or I will
This. Or removing the system. Both seem to be good ideas.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Either the rating system goes, or I will
> It's not using Javascript It is using JS to hide comments (as others have mentioned above), so in theory, the voting counter could be updated without reloading the entire page. But I'm gussing this would require some non-trivial dev by someone reasonably fluent in JS, and testing to make sure it doesn't break anything else. Your suggestion about using an anchor link could also be a solution, but I suspect this would also involve a non-trivial modification of the forum software used here.

Recommendations for a video downloader, so I can download a > video from You- Tube without 'signing in' (not everything is on > BitChute & D-Tube yet). For just downloading, youtube-dl is a good command line tool in the repo. avideo does the same thing, but avoids running non-free javascript in the background. It isn't in the repo, but you can build it from here: https://notabug.org/GPast/avideo For browsing and streaming from YouTube, I recommend youtube-viewer. It includes bothe the command line tool youtube-viewer and the graphical tool gtk-youtube-viewer. https://github.com/trizen/youtube-viewer You can install it from a PPA $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 $ sudo apt update $ sudo apt install youtube-viewer Note that unlike installing from the Trisquel repo, when you install from a PPA you'll need to check the license yourself to know that the software is free. > Lastly, if I can't get my AMD computer to run with Trisquel, any > recommendations for a simple, not too compromised non-free linux > system that may work? (If this is inappropriate/contentious on this > forum, let me know & I'll post this separately on the other > Trisquel related forum). You should certainly be able to get Trisquel to "run," but it indeed possible that not all hardware will work without non-free firmware. The most common hardware to require non-free firmware is the WiFi card. This is the case with my computer, so instead I use a USB wireless adapter for which there is free firmware. https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb I don't know whether there is a free driver for your GPU, but it is worth trying the latest kernel. It would be against community guidelines to help you install proprietary software, but Trisquel imposes no restrictions on what you can or can't install on your machine, free or proprietary. signature.asc Description: PGP signature
[Trisquel-users] AMD Graphics Driver + Printer Drivers +Video downloaders.
AMD Graphics Driver + Printer Drivers. I recently installed Trisquel on an Acer Aspire 1, with intel graphics – thanks for everyone's help/input. I'm beginning to realise that there'll be several other issues to navigate as I progress. Friend who suggested Trisquel said it wouldn't work on my main computer as it has an AMD radeon graphics driver (it doesn't work well & computer runs extremely hot). However, after delving into his complex mind of information without annoying him too much, he did say that it might possibly work with a different kernel (not 100% sure what this entails exactly). So: 1. Has anyone here had success with an AMD graphics driver computer after installing a new 'kernel'? If there are places I can go to find this out, just point me in the right direction as I don't want to waste everyone's time with subjects already covered on the forum. 2. Where is the best place to go to find printer drivers? I can't use my mono laser printer with Trisquel at the moment. 3. Recommendations for a video downloader, so I can download a video from You- Tube without 'signing in' (not everything is on BitChute & D-Tube yet). Lastly, if I can't get my AMD computer to run with Trisquel, any recommendations for a simple, not too compromised non-free linux system that may work? (If this is inappropriate/contentious on this forum, let me know & I'll post this separately on the other Trisquel related forum). Thanks everyone.
