By secure delete do you mean 'srm' from the secure-delete package? I'll answer
your question assuming that's what you mean. If not, this will still work for
whatever terminal command you are using.

Run 'caja-actions-config-tool' and create a new action. Under the 'Action' tab,
change the 'Context label' field to "Secure Delete". Then go to the 'Command'
tab. In the 'Path' field put 'srm' (or whichever command you're using) and in
the 'Parameters' field put '%b'. Hit 'Save'.

Next go to Edit -> Prefences and deselect "Create a root 'Caja-Actions' Menu".

Now, when you right-click on a file in Caja, you should see 'Secure Delete'. If
you also want to be able to secure delete directories, change the command in
caja-actions-config-tool from 'srm' to 'srm -r'.

As a bonus reply to some of my own questions, I found this out
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/caja-seahorse

Installing it was easy and gave me the ability to import signatures, verify
it, etc. All from a simple right click and from within caja. I still have not
found a solution for secure deleting files, I am still using the CLI for
that. But hope to find something. Any help greatly appreciated.

P.S.: Yes I am aware Magic Banana explained how to use nautilus and
gnome-shell. But I am trying to stick with the default mate desktop in which
I have already invested some time configuring things my way. So, yeah, I am
sticking with caja.

I have not tried Videos on Trisquel.

And... oh, for crying out loud!  It doesn't work!

I just installed it to try it out. I really don't get how it works, if I
press the "search"-icon I can type in stuff to search for, but it defaults to
search for stuff in my own filesystem. Now if I change the place to search
for stuff from "filesystem" to "YouTube" it's suddenly not possible to type
anything.

Is this a bug that someone else has experienced?

I haven't tried this, but if totem uses youtube-dl/avideo as its backend for
accessing youtube, you could try creating ~/.config/youtube-dl.conf containing
this line:

--prefer-free-formats

so that if a WebM is available (it often is) it will use that instead of
defaulting to MP4. If totem doesn't use youtube-dl/avideo, you could try
youtube-viewer, which does.

Re: [Trisquel-users] GNOME Videos: Apple Movie Trailers

2018-07-10 Thread Mason Hock
Are you able to actually play any of the Apple trailers? I get an error: "Could
not initialize the supporting library", but this could be due to an unrelated
bug. My impression from this forum is that totem is buggy in general, at least
in Trisquel.

If the videos can be played without non-free software, then watching them
through totem is better freedomwise than watching them through iTunes. The
trailers themselves are presumably non-free, but since they are not
“information for practical use” this on its own is not a FSDG issue.

> My concern with banning Apple movie trailers is, wouldn't banning it
> mean you'd have to ban all of YouTube?  That wouldn't be good.

I think there is a difference between banning and not promoting. Not including
a channel by default is not a ban, since the user is still free to add that
channel. Including it by default promotes it. Apple is a nasty company, and I
don't see why they deserve the privilage of being promoted by Trisquel. I feel
the same way about including Amazon and Google as one-click search engines in
Abrowser.

There is another issue, which is that these videos are trailers. Trailers are
intended to encourage the viewer to watch the full movie. Can the full movies
be accessed through totem? I doubt it, in which case they will encourage the
user to view the film elsewhere. It is often very difficult to obtain some
films without DRM or non-free software. It's probably not a good idea to
advertise a film unless you provide a freedom-respecting path toward obtaining
that film.

I assume that this Apple crap is from upstream. I wonder what the default
newsfeeds in Lifrea are in Ubuntu? In Trisquel, they are all freedom-friendly
sources like LibrePlanet and the Trisquel forums. I doubt that these are the
defaults in Ubuntu. Perhaps the default channels in totem could be replaced
with something a more freedom-friendly source than Apple.

I feel the same way about YouTube. There is nothing wrong with providing
Trisquel users with a means of watching Youtube videos without proprietary
software, such as avideo (which should replace youtube-dl), but there is no
reason to actively promote Youtube. If Trisquel promotes any websites for
obtaining media, they should be freedom-respecting ones like Libre.FM or
MediaGoblin.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Input methods

2018-07-10 Thread Caleb Herbert
I found a solution.

I unchecked "Use system keyboard layout" under Advanced in UBus
Preferences.

I checked "Show icon on system tray" under General.

In Keyboard Preferences, under Layouts, I removed all keyboards except
my main one.

Now, all input methods are accessible with Super+Space, and (as an
improvement from Trisquel 7) each icon for each input method has an
easily viewable label in big letters. (Before, each input method had
the same icon, and then a small text below it saying what it actually
was.)

In addition, there are new input methods for things I never got to
type, like International Phonetic Alphabet and kaomoji.  I haven't
found an emoji input method yet, though.

My concern with banning Apple movie trailers is, wouldn't banning it
mean you'd have to ban all of YouTube?  That wouldn't be good.

But, you could argue that Apple movie trailers is something very
specific, and that specific thing should be banned while non-specific
things like YouTube should not.

By the way, Videos is a great way to search and view YouTube videos
without proprietary JavaScript.  My only gripe is that it fetches
videos in MP4 format instead of WebM, so it won't work on stock Fedora.

GNOME apps have two names: a technical/package name, and a display
name.  For example, Web is called "epiphany" still, in the package
managers.

Videos is still totem, but it is no longer Totem with a capital T.
