MATE's control center wasn't installed but it is now.

The 'items list' is empty but actions can be added. However, I cannot find
suggestions as to how to configure such an action.

I checked that I do have the caja-open-terminal package installed and suppose
I need a command to activate it.

Can you help with e.g. a screenshot of how the open caja action is configured
on your computer?

[Trisquel-users] Messages to the mailing list

2019-11-10 Thread Zelphir Kaltstahl
Hi,

A while ago, a few hours before I was on the mailing list, I sent an
e-mail reporting a problem with the netinstall of the main Trisquel
image (iso). I got an e-mail, that my message would get through, when
someone looked at it. That is now a week or more ago. It is a serious
issue, that prevents installing Trisquel at all.

How long does it usually take to review e-mails from users, who were not
on the list at the time?

Regards,

Zelphir

Alpha I guess, since there are still missing packages and features.

[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 netinstaller images available for testing

2019-11-10 Thread mason
Read this post before trying them. The installer has been reported to
work in a VM, but I have run into some issues when testing it on
physical machines.

64-bit:
http://jenkins.trisquel.info/debian-installer-images/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/mini.iso

32-bit:
http://jenkins.trisquel.info/debian-installer-images/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/

Currently, you will get an error message during the "Select and install
software" step. When this happens, press Enter to continue. You will
see a list of installation steps. Arrow key down to "Install the GRUB
boot loader on a hard disk" and press Enter again to continue the
installation.

If installation was successful, and you want to install a GUI, you next
need to install xorg, a display manager, and desktop environment.

$ sudo apt install xorg

Trisquel's default display manager is LightDM. It currently does not
work. I hope it will be working after this Friday's meeting, but for
now as a temporary workaround you can use slim

$ sudo apt install slim

Trisquel's default desktop metapackages aren't in the repositories yet,
but several desktop environments are installable. I have tested MATE

$ sudo apt install mate fonts-ubuntu

and Xfce

$ sudo apt install xfce4

I have been told that LXDE also works. Unity is not installable at this
time. GNOME might be installable, but a few dependencies might still be
missing from the repo. Most other desktop environments should probably
work, but I have not tested them.

Some packages are still missing from the repo, notably abrowser,
plymouth, and lightdm-gtk-greeter. Hopefully most of the missing
packages will be added Friday.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Invert screen

The reason I asked you was that I suppose you would know whether this problem
can be solved via the terminal or not.

You can certainly alter Abrowser's configuration files through command lines,
rather than through the Preferences or through about:config. But the result
would be the same.

I had never clicked on that "Colors..." button in the "Preferences". I see
the colors defined there are actually part of those I defined through the
preferences of the extension "Dark Background and Light Text". You may find
the use of that extension acceptable (you can know the exact color of any
pixel on your screen with tiny programs such as gcolor2, which is Trisquel's
repository).

But I am actually unsure whether you refer to the content of the Web page (as
I do in the paragraph above) or to the "chrome" (the rest of Abrowser's
window). In the latter case, you may find and install a Firefox theme of
your choice.

You can launch MATE's "Control Center" from a terminal emulator:

Weird. Perhaps the icon theme is came contained in a directory, so the
subdirectory containing the actual icon theme is nested too deep?

See if index.theme is in the expected location, i.e. if the icon theme is
called foo, you should have

/usr/share/icons/foo/index.theme

We are close to having a working netinstaller. I hope that after this
Friday's meeting it will be ready. In the meantime, it is possible to
install Trisquel 8 and upgrade to Trisquel 9, or to debootstrap onto
another partition.

Some packages are not in the repos yet, but packages which are in the
repos already are stable, so how usable it is for you will depend on
which packages you need.

Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Open in terminal' does not work

2019-11-10 Thread jbahn

I actually do use Caja but under xfce. I prefer Caja over Thunar.

Hence, I don't have MATE's control center. In xfce's control center there is
a menu point called 'File manager' but it refers to Thunar.

But 'Open in terminal' usually works and still does at my other machine, also
running xfce and with Caja as the default file manager.

Maybe I should point out, that when right clicking in a folder, the menu
point of 'Open in terminal' is there. It just does not work.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Invert screen

2019-11-10 Thread jbahn
I am sorry - I get it that my formulations are not clear enough. And of
course I don't expect you to just fix this problem whether or not it is a lot
of work (I have no idea if it is).

Anyway, the problem is that I have installed a new theme called Numix-Zenburn
(which chaosmink introduced earlier in this thread). On a system level it
works without issues.

To make Abrowser adopt the theme, one needs to change the setting under
Preferences -> General -> Colors to "Use system colors" and to "Always"
'override the colors specified by the page with your selections above'.

The problem is that the last part doesn't work: Abrowser does not adopt the
theme which the system uses.

According to chaosmonk's suggestions, colors for the different graphical
elements of Abrowser can be changed in about:config under
'browser.display.whatever_the_sort_of_element_one_wants_to_set_the_color_for.

I have tried this too, but it also lead to no change.

The reason I asked you was that I suppose you would know whether this problem
can be solved via the terminal or not. In which case you would either say
it's not possible, that it is but you don't have the time to do it or that
you would suggest a solution. Of course it is also a possible fallout that
you do not know.

Please don't consider my request as a demand but rather as an enquiry. And
with no other expectations than your usual kindness.

If I had to guess, given that I don't use trisquel anymore, it probably has a
year before being stable. As for when its beta, who knows...

Don't ever, ever upgrade to alpha operating systems unless you know the
risks. Just a heads up.

The problematic version of NetworkManager was removed from flidas-backports.
My proposal remains:
[A] post on the main page could explain how to get a wired connection
(informing the IP address of any DNS server in the Network Setting) and how
to downgrade the problematic packages ('sudo apt install
network-manager=1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.3 wpasupplicant=2.4-0ubuntu6.6').

I wonder how many users have been stucked for weeks with no Internet
connection and have not either discovered the solution on this forum... or
ditched Trisquel. Probably not many...

That command line substituted a seven-step fix that arielenter designed to a
problem all Abrowser users faced at that time. To be honest, I am not really
following what changes you are trying to apply. But if does not work

Fair enough. I'd definitely prefer updated to removed. But I do worry about
distributing obsolete versions of software whose homepages make strong
security claims that may no longer be justified in older versions. I'm
particularly concerned about this as it applies to communications apps and
their dependencies.

OK. I just found out that two time-consuming tasks have been taken off my

[Trisquel-users] Re : A 'tool' to select librebootable thinkpad

2019-11-10 Thread lcerf
I know no better than what the article tells, which involves economical
arguments:
Beijing has stated it wants 40% of processor demand to be met by local
supplies next year, though last year, that rate was just 15%. If the trade
war continues on its current course Beijing might need 100% of demand to be
met by Chinese suppliers, and if that eventuality occurs, designs like the XT
910 will be absolutely pivotal.

As for quantum processors, they will not obsolete traditional processors,
whose precise architecture (like x86 or RISC-V) does not matter: some
algorithms will be sped up (a lot: enabling computation that would take ages
on traditional processors), others will not.

Numix-Zenburn theme OR changing colors manually in about:config, I just get a
white background?

Chaosmonk said he had a similar issue with Abrowser (in this thread) and I
haven't been able to solve the issue. According to the monk, these colors are
used in the Zenburn theme:

"browser.display.background_color" to #3F3F3F
"browser.display.foreground_color" to #DCDCCC
"browser.anchor_color" to #8CD0D3
"browser.visited_color" to #CC9393
