[Trisquel-users] Moving cursor with keyboard
Does Trisquel have a built-in utility that will allow me to use the arrow keys to move the cursor? If not, is such a utility available as free software?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Moving cursor with keyboard
That seems useful, but my laptop doesn't have a number pad, and the instructions aren't clear on how to emulate one.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Moving cursor with keyboard
What are xmodmap and xev and how do I use them? And exactly which members of the forum can see my email address?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Moving cursor with keyboard
Gah. My email address contains my real name, which I don't want online. Why does this forum even require it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Meet Free Software supporters in Sofia
I would love to hear that talk about Firefox OS, since I'm curious about what proprietary software it contains.
Re: [Trisquel-users] “badBIOS,” malware that jumps airgaps
If this is an actual BIOS (not sure if it is?) then I want its source code. It appears to be cross-platform, easy to install, and fully functional. Still, this terrifies me. What distance can this virus cross?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Substitute fonts
Found another one! It's called Aileron, and it looks a lot like the famous Univers. But it has a twist to it; the lowercase L has a tail, distinguishing it from I. I like this font!
Re: [Trisquel-users] What exactly is the installation procedure for installing 32-bit compatibility libraries?
This user has solved his problem by booting 32 bit Trisquel. Our work here is done.

Re: [Trisquel-users] True N900 successor introduction - Neo900 - Openmoko
I'm the guy who emailed you and inspired this post. The closest to being open is TI Calypso, but it supports only 56k-modem like GPRS speed, and operating any open firmware like OsmocomBB on public networks is illegal (and OsmocomBB is very incompete anyway) Really? Why is this illegal? Is this only in the U.S. or internationally? That really stinks if free software has been made illegal.
Re: [Trisquel-users] True N900 successor introduction - Neo900 - Openmoko
It's not really the matter of free software, it's the matter of trying to execute your freedoms that licenses like GPL want to protect. That's the definition of free software, protecting one's freedoms. all we could do to make it free would be to release the sources used to build a blob you would get with the device. Really? You have no way to write firmware of your own? Of course there are also some illegal projects I may oppose proprietary software, but I won't cross into the realm of crime to rid myself of it. I would really love to donate to free hardware/software projects like this. If I could, I'd give you enough to write all the blobs from scratch. But I don't have enough money.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Substitute fonts
Fonts are how software would be if decompiling were reliable. Fontforge can open .otf and .ttf files and treat them as source files. Essentially, source code is always shipped with a font. The exception is a few old CJK fonts for Windows, that didn't actually use outlines but only vague directions. But they were proprietary anyways.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [OT] Charging for source code
Are binaries allowed to be proprietary if the source code is free?
Re: [Trisquel-users] [OT] Mobile telephony survey
As OP of this thread, I second this motion.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [OT] Charging for source code
My reasoning behind this approach is that once even one person buys the source code at that price, they will be able to redistribute it freely. So I don't think anyone's freedom is harmed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What exactly is the installation procedure for installing 32-bit compatibility libraries?
Please do not make your replies to my comments top-level. There should be a reply link on my comments; please use those. Bad luck. I got the same problem (ia32-libs-multiarch is not installable) on my clean Trisquel installation. At this point I have four suggestions for you: Try doing all the previous steps after making sure your system is up-to-date with sudo apt-get update; or Create a bootable USB of another distro such as Debian, install 32-bit compatibility libraries for that distro, and use them to run fastboot and install Replicant; or Use the 64-bit fastboot executable that comes with the Replicant SDK, although developer Paul Kocialkowski has informed me that this executable is a bit out of date; or If all else fails, you can create an account on Imgur and private message me there as Partageons. I'll give you my address, you can send me your phone through the mail, and I'll install Replicant on it for you. I'm no scammer; just check my other contributions to these forums and you'll see I've never attempted something like this before. I understand completely that you might not be comfortable with trusting a stranger in this way — I doubt I'd do the same.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [OT] Charging for source code
That wasn't what I was saying. I'm wondering if one could charge the same price for both the source code and the binaries, and distribute them separately.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Wallpapers
Just use a license that says Attribution or Attribution-ShareAlike, but none of the others are libre.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What exactly is the installation procedure for installing 32-bit compatibility libraries?
I'll get back to you this evening. I'll record my steps to install the libraries from a clean installation (on a Trisquel startup disk), so you can see if they work for you.
[Trisquel-users] [OT] Charging for source code
Would it be acceptable for a developer to release a program's source code (distributed separately from the binaries) for a reasonable and affordable fee, while at the same time providing it for free if asked as described in the last section of http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant ?
I strongly recommend the Nexus S. Installation is incredibly easy, it's cheap and it works well.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel tablet
I just thought of something. A Galaxy Tab 10.1 with Replicant is actually your best option. There's an app called Lil, available from F-Droid, that installs Debian on your phone. Would that work?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant ?
For heaven's sake, remove that proprietary software! People have worked hard to bring you a phone containing only free software, and installing proprietary firmware defeats the purpose.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant ?
We can do nothing about the bootloader, as it is unmodifiable, but we can do something about the Wi-Fi firmware: remove it! According to the Replicant Status page, mobile data is working on the Galaxy Note. Is it not working for you?

[Trisquel-users] [OT] Mobile telephony survey
What does everyone on this forum use for their mobile phone? As my story has been documented elsewhere on these forums (https://trisquel.info/en/forum/close-possible, http://trisquel.info/en/forum/replicant): I originally bought an LG Optimus G, tried and failed to install CyanogenMod on it, rooted it, bricked it by removing some system apps, bought a Nexus S from Craigslist, and installed Replicant on it. Now all my computing is free. So is it Replicant? CyanogenMod? An old, unmodifiable Nokia?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel tablet
If you want a tablet that can run a free operating system, get a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and install Replicant on it. Replicant is based on Android, which is based on GNU/Linux. Is that okay?
[Trisquel-users] Copying large file to Replicant phone
(In case I hadn't informed this forum already, I now have a Samsung Nexus S running Replicant. Now all my computing is fully free!) I've installed a GPS app on the phone that requires 1.8 GB of map data (they don't have an option for my area, just all of Canada), but Replicant's Wi-Fi doesn't work, and my carrier gives me only 200 MB of data per month. I downloaded the map data onto my computer, and connected my phone. But I'm observing some unusual behaviour in the copying. The file manager copies ~300 MB of data to the phone in an instant, and suddenly slows to a crawl of about a megabyte per second. But the file operations window claims it's copying at a much higher speed, and the time reflects that. The copying speed displayed by the file manager and the actual copying speed continue to fall as the copying progresses. If I go long enough I get an error message, which I can't remember right now, but will post if I see it again. My latest attempt failed because I bumped the cable. Bad luck.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Copying large file to Replicant phone
Please disregard this topic. The file copied successfully, although it took about half an hour.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Copying large file to Replicant phone
That was a disappointment. It didn't even work! But I'm still concerned by this. The operation only succeeded because the file copied in its entirety before the copying rate reached 0 kB/s. What was the reason for the observed conditions?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Free software word processor with OpenType support
I'm not talking about support of the OpenType format, which is near universal. I'm talking about support of advanced OpenType features such as proportional/tabular and oldstyle/lining numerals, stylistic alternates, discretionary ligatures, and of course stylistic sets.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Substitute fonts
That's just Droid Serif with a few minor character changes that make the font slightly uglier.

The font they're using on their website is proprietary. I'm guessing this isn't a fully free distribution.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Substitute fonts
That looks nothing like Calibri. In fact, it's just Lato with better language support.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What exactly is the installation procedure for installing 32-bit compatibility libraries?
Darn. I guess it's not as simple as that. Go to System Settings → Synaptic Package Manager, click on the Broken Dependencies option on the side menu, and mark all the listed packages for removal. Installation of Replicant was trivial for me once I got the 32-bit libraries installed, so I'm determined to help you get through this. I'll try to walk you through the process of what allowed me to install Replicant. Download this script and move it to your home folder: ia32-bypass.txt sudo apt-get -f install libsdl1.2debian openjdk-6-jdk bash ia32-bypass.txt sudo apt-get install ia32-libs After that, follow the three-step procedure I described above. This worked for me; I hope it will do the same for you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What exactly is the installation procedure for installing 32-bit compatibility libraries?
Try my suggestion. Be the test case. Then, if it doesn't work, go to System Settings - Synaptic Package Manager and click on the option on the left menu that says Broken dependencies. Remove those packages, and you should be fine to try again.

It's designed for the previous release. You, however, have stayed on LTS, so there are some bugs. At least, that's what I can surmise.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is this Libre software?
Since the original TrueCrypt discussion, which I started, is locked: I just got an email from the FSF. Here's what they said about the TrueCrypt License: The Truecrypt license used to be even more vague then it is right now, and it has improved, but it still isn't considered to be a free software license by the FSF. It is in fact a collection of licenses, some of which might be OK. But it also contains sections such as the following: '3. If you use any of the source code originally by Eric Young, you must in addition follow his terms and conditions.' But there is no further reference in the Truecrypt license text to what are those 'terms and conditions'.

Good news! They include a link on the page I get that allows you to opt out of the service, but it takes a day to take effect. I love my ISP.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant
Are there really so few people here that use Replicant? I would assume a good number of us use mobile phones.
[Trisquel-users] Replicant
Does anyone here use a phone with Replicant? Since I'm currently looking to replace my bricked LG Optimus G, I'd like to know what your experiences with it are, especially compared to Android. I'd also like to know how easy it was for you to install. I can't afford to brick this second phone. I know Replicant has its own forums, but they're pretty much unwatched except for the developer.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Substitute fonts
There is an easy way and a hard way to do it. The hard way is to open a terminal, enter sudo nautilus, enter your password, and copy the files into /usr/share/fonts. The easy way is to install the program Font Manager from add/remove applications, click the gear in the bottom left corner, click Install Fonts, and navigate to the folder where you have the fonts. This has the downside of only installing the fonts for you and not for all users.
[Trisquel-users] Firefox/Abrowser add-on lets you see all YouTube videos in HTML5
I posted this as a reply buried down in this thread, but it's really useful and I want everybody to know about it. At Mozilla's add-on site, to which I don't think I can link because they promote proprietary software, they have an add-on called YouTube ALL HTML5. It is developed by Klemens Schölhorn. It allows you to see all videos on YouTube in HTML5 without using Gnash. For most videos it does this automatically, but for VEVO videos you have to click the button it adds next to the YouTube search bar. The add-on's page says its source code is released under GPLv3 or later, but the source files bear the MPL license header. In any case, it's free software.
Re: [Trisquel-users] vPro technology and thinkpads
vPro is not a threat. Take a deep breath, calm down. I know this forum might have shoved it down your throats so many times, but VPRO IS NOT A THREAT! (Sorry, didn't mean to yell.) Let's think logically here. Imagine I wanted to put an OS-independent technology in all computers that would track their keystrokes, allow their system to be accessed and booted remotely, etcetera. The easiest way to do this would be to tell no one about the technology. If nobody knows about it, then nobody will suspect anything I would definitely not try to disguise it as a feature, because that would be too much work. And even if I did disguise it as a feature, I would not create some models without the technology which would ensure that users who suspected something could try to opt out of the tracking while still getting the benefits of the processor's latest generation. And even if I created some models without the technology, I would not make the list of which models have and do not have it public, so users would know exactly which models to avoid. All of this logically points to vPro being harmless. If Intel has created any back door in its processors, it's not vPro. Any processor is suspect, because they'd just disguise it, like they disguise the tracking capabilities of cell phones.
[Trisquel-users] Firefox OS's libre typefaces available
I don't know how this forum feels about Firefox OS, but I've just discovered that they are making the OS fonts freely available. Here's the download page: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/styleguide/products/firefox-os/typeface/ You'll need to scroll all the way to the bottom to get the download links. The typeface is called Fira. It comes in two varieties, Fira Sans and Fira Mono. Fira Sans comes in four weights (light, regular, medium, and bold) with upright and italic for each weight. Fira Mono comes in regular and bold. All fonts include Cyrillic and Greek support. The typefaces don't come with a license file, but I opened it up in FontForge and the headers state that the fonts are free under the OFL. What's really nice about these fonts is they bear an uncanny resemblance to the famous font FF Meta.
Re: [Trisquel-users] As close as possible
Unbricking was unsuccessful and I'll be replacing my phone with a used one so I don't have to pay out the balance of the contract. But I have even worse news: Replicant can't be installed without proprietary software (fastboot, part of the SDK).
Re: [Trisquel-users] As close as possible
Actually, does anybody know what the deal is with licensing of the Android SDK or its Eclipse plugin? I can't find a license or source code for either.
Re: [Trisquel-users] As close as possible
I just rooted my phone using a friend's Windows computer. I feel so powerful right now :) I've removed most all of the bloatware system apps such as Twitter, Facebook, and Gmail. I had to use a proprietary application to do this, but I figure it's okay to use proprietary software to get rid of proprietary software. The downside? Since I had to get rid of the Play Store app and for some reason downloading apps through the online play store no longer works, I can't install any applications unless I have the .apk on the phone. But that's the price of freedom, I guess. Now I'm interested to hear: what else is wrong with Android? What other proprietary stuff have I missed?
Re: [Trisquel-users] As close as possible
Crud. Crud crud crud. The moment I rebooted it I got a security error, My phone is bricked. There appears to be no way to unbrick it without proprietary software. Looks like my friend's going to be getting another call...
Re: [Trisquel-users] As close as possible
As a matter of fact, I discovered F-Droid moments after posting that. Then I installed an application that asked me to reboot my phone. That's when I found it was bricked.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Google brain implants. What do people think?
The nice thing about free software is that the developers are accountable and anybody can fix the vulnerability.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Google brain implants. What do people think?
On a semi-related note to your last paragraph, remember that whole storm of anger over the poor quality of the iOS 6 maps? There was one redeeming point to them: they had North Korea completely mapped out. Google Maps shows nothing for North Korea.
Re: [Trisquel-users] SteamOS
I like you, man. You remind me that free software is created by an ethical community. I volunteer at a local homeless outreach. Our leader/manager, a stay-at-home mom, was selected by Statistics Canada to have her and her family's habits heavily scrutinized for six months. She described how one day, on the phone with a Statistics Canada worker, she was asked Do you work? Yes. How many hours a week? And so on until finally she was asked Who is your employer?, and she finally had to confess that it was all volunteer work. The statistician had to start the survey over. She said to me Why must we gain money from work for it to be valuable?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Google brain implants. What do people think?
The mind is the last remnant of privacy we have, even if it cannot be shared. Now Google is encroaching on that. I won't stand for the idea that a corporation, or anyone for that matter, could listen to my every thought — not even if its source code is 100% libre (and I'm sure it won't be). Like axgb said, All babies have google chip inplanted [sic]. Who knows what kind of effect this could have on a child's development? Whatever happened to having a choice about what goes on in your head?
