Re: [Trisquel-users] Leaving Trisquel over systemd Concerns, Fantastic Project Otherwise, Thanks

I consider that the most strenuous work is mainly focused on staying as
informed as possible about vulnerabilities in critical applications (kernel,
web browser, etc.), although it is not too difficult to compile a new kernel
or a new version of the web browser over time becomes very tedious or
demanding to follow the do it your self philosophy because you would spend
more time worrying about security breaches or in finding a hotfix for an old
version of a dependency than having fun with your device. Remember that you
will be on your own and the time it usually takes to compile a new version of
the kernel or web browser is quite considerable (one to two hours at best and
with high-end equipment) task that as a minimum should be performed once a
month in the best of cases and in the worst could be 2 to 3 times in a month
per application.

My intention is not to discourage you, but it's a little more acceptable when
you have some packers or developers covering your back and take from them the
most time-consuming applications to compile.

Best regards.

If you had fun with Slackware (Salix OS in this case), you could give it a
chance to Freenix (formerly known as Freeslack) which is a Free eXpansion
Pack for Slackware. This means that you install a vanilla Slackware and once
the installation process is finished modify your repositories to Freenix so
that it replaces and removes the non-free software and kernel. This project
is basically focused on listing and removing all non-free applications
included in the software installation disk so it is not a GNU/Linux
distribution itself.

Beyond that they do not make any additional modifications, as is typical in
the Slackware community, they respect and greatly value the decisions that
their benevolent dictator for life, Patrick V. in this case, considers for
the distribution.

I tried it a long time ago and I have a lot of love and respect for this
project. The only warning I can give you when using a Slackware-Libre is to
be careful when using or installing any application from the Slackbuilds
community repository, something similar to the Ubuntu's ppa, since, they do
not have such a firm conviction about the ideology of the FSF as the truly
libre distributions.

I assure you you'll have a lot of fun with Slackware-Libre.

Best regards.

you're right, I apply the update while installing the new version of the
graphical stack, so in that sense would have no way to determine if the
improvement in functionality is due to one or the other.

Regads.

Well, I still have the X server up and running (LOL!). The installation
process only showed me some warnings harmless but noisy but everything
happened correctly.

As a first impression it seems to me that the rendering problem has been
solved at the moment. I need to let more time pass to be able to confirm with
full confidence that it has.

Before:

foo@bar:~$ inxi -G
Graphics: Card: Intel Mobile 945GSE Express Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
Resolution: 1024x600@60.00hz

GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2 GLX Version: 1.4 Mesa 18.0.5

After (right now):

foo@bar:~$ inxi -G
Graphics: Card: Intel Mobile 945GSE Express Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.19.6 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
Resolution: 1024x600@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2 GLX Version: 1.4
Mesa 18.0.5

Best regards.

Thank you very much for the explanation, I am still adapting to the
Trisquel's packages/structure.

Of course, I was just planning to install the suggested package as following:

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04

Wish me luck.

@jxself: Thanks to you too for your advice.

2018-09-26 Thread mario . i . ruvalcaba

I also have problems with abrowser, rendering mainly...

foo@bar$ inxi -G
Graphics: Card: Intel Mobile 945GSE Express Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
Resolution: 1024x600@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2 GLX Version: 1.4
Mesa 18.0.5

It seems to confirm that the issue is focused on the Mesa/Intel driver
version.

However, Pale Moon works much better for me in this case but not without
issues at all.

Best regards.

[Trisquel-users] Is it possible to apply Ubuntu's LTS Enablement Stack upgrades in Trisquel 8?

2018-09-26 Thread mario . i . ruvalcaba

Hi everyone!

Very probably this question is typical but I have searched the forum and I
could not find a satisfactory answer to it.

I have tried to follow the procedure described here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack, but I get as a result the
replacement of several critical components of the distribution, the trisquel
metapackage to be more concrete.

In my case I want to install a newer version of the graphical stack for my
computer (mesa/Intel driver) because I have some rendering issues with
Firefox-like web browsers and I'm not interested in having a newer kernel
version. In fact I wouldn't like it, version 4.4 is enough for me.

Any kind of help or comment would be appreciated.

Best regards.

As far as I know, the issue comes from the Intel driver.See this:
https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=37=19941=counter=40#p149123

I have Intel GPU too and I also have problems with both browsers
