Re: [Trisquel-users] LibertyBSD - OpenBSD minus the blobs

2014-12-30 Thread riftyful
Maybe release the source code? What you're trying to do is nice, but it does
seem strange to me. If you're trying to make a fully free system, it would be
logical for you to develop and share it as free software. But you say that
you only provide a non-functional binary .iso without the source code and
sell a DVD with working one you ask people not to share and distribute. You
may have a vision of your final product being free software, but so far, what
you do seems to go against the four freedoms, rather than support them. If I
got my facts wrong, please correct me. If not, then yes, I am suspicious of
you and LibertyBSD.

Re: [Trisquel-users] F-Droid Appstore criticizes application for using non-free network service

2014-12-13 Thread riftyful

I can't see any difference between those two situations.

I'd like to point out that they do not share the exact same problem. Telegram
is a messaging service you can use to talk to people. Therefore, your
messages are private and meant for only one person (or a specific group of
people). This is a forum where your posts are public and everyone can see
them. As far as posting threads and replies goes, there is no privacy need to
begin with.

I think you have the right goal but i find it unreasonable that you condemn
telegram and not, let's say, duckduckgo and internet forums.

Now, I am not a programmer and I'm not sure to what degree can you verify
DucDuckGo's trustworthiness, but I agree that it is not the ideal solution. I
like DuckDuckGo because it's (mostly) free and cares about privacy (I did not
verify that, but I believe it).
Of course, it would be best if we all could use something like YaCy, but both
DuckDuckGo and Telegram are at least a better option than their ignorant and
restrictive counterparts. But yes, it would still be better if everything was
100% libre, and in the best case, decentralized.

That's because Trisquel 7 is based on Ubuntu 14.04
Maybe you can download a newer package manually or check if there's one in
GNOME's ppa.

I agree. I really like where Tox is heading. For me personally, it's already
quite usable, including A/V!

Kind of. There are some nice updates and improvements and UI polishing. I
will probably just get Parabola :)

As far as I know, it's a certificate support issue.

[Trisquel-users] Libre MMO games

2014-12-02 Thread riftyful

Hello!

So I'm moving to libre system and I am wondering if there are any nice libre
MMO games?

I have been playing a game called Transformice for a long time now. I don't
even go there for playing games, because you can just use the game to hang
with friends and build maps or play various minigames. Unfortunately, it
requires Flash and won't work with Gnash, Lightspark or Shumway.

Therefore, does anyone know of any good libre MMO games? Preferably not an
RPG, or at least not a grinding RPG. Non-massively multiplayer suggestions
also welcome. I just want it to be playable even without the use of port
forwarding.

During my searching, I found this nice database:
https://libregamewiki.org/Main_Page Unfortunately the multiplayer games in
there did not interest me very much. So it would be great if anyone knows
about a good game that is libre or at least doesn't require proprietary
software to play. Help much appreciated, thanks!

[Trisquel-users] GNOME Shell in Trisquel 7

2014-12-01 Thread riftyful

Hello!
(TL;DR at the end)

I have decided to get an external wi-fi card and start living a more free
life! :)
I am currently running Ubuntu, but I'd like to switch to a completely libre
system. After doing some DE research, I think I'd prefer using GNOME Shell.
GNOME Shell is constantly being improved and they releasy a new version once
in a while. The problem is that Ubuntu is usually one or two stable releases
behind. I originally thought about getting Fedora so that I can have more
recent packages, but I'd prefer using a completely free distribution, such as
Trisquel. I'm just worried about the package versions. In this review of
Trisquel 7 (http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20141201#trisquel) they
say that GNOME Shell appears to be version 3.10. Therefore I want to ask
whether it's possible to install GNOME Shell 3.14 on Trisquel 7, in a fairly
simple way.
I'm okay with adding a ppa or two, or downloading some packages, but I'd
rather not make hacks to the system, as it usually ends in a bad
way.Alternatively, I could try some other distributions. I have used Arch
before, but it broke, but that was my mistake. Has anyone tried Parabola
GNU/Linux-libre? If it works as well as Arch, I could definitely give it a
go!

TL;DR: Can I (without much hassle) install GNOME Shell 3.14 in Trisquel 7?
Has anyone used Parabola GNU/Linux?

Re: [Trisquel-users] GNOME Shell in Trisquel 7

2014-12-01 Thread riftyful

Ah, well, that's a shame. But good to know Parabola works well!

That said, the review I linked to says that there are different versions for
GNOME packages. Is that by design of Trisquel? I might also settle for GNOME
3.12, because I know they have a ppa for Ubuntu 14.04 with that.

That said, how are Trisquel releases going to work, anyways? Will there be
one every 2 years, will there be ones based on non-LTS releases, or will it
be like Linux Mint and release LTS-based system with updates?

Re: [Trisquel-users] GNOME Shell in Trisquel 7

2014-12-01 Thread riftyful

Does that mean GNOME 3.14 will eventually come by in Trisquel 7?

Actually, a Wiki could work very well. Thank you for the suggestion, I'm
definitely going to try ShoutWiki out!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Good free website hosting

2014-10-04 Thread riftyful
I took a look at it, but it seemed like it targets users who know what they
are doing with technology. Also, SSH keys and git? While Red Hat is a great
company I like and respect, I will probably look into simpler solutions here.
But thank you for suggestion! :)

[Trisquel-users] Good free website hosting

2014-10-03 Thread riftyful

Hello!

I am looking for a website that can provide a decent web hosting. I don't
even really specially need web hosting, I need to make an online website with
some pages, text, images and files to download. I used Wordpress at
000webhost, but my IP got reported as spam bot and now I have trouble
accessing the site.

I am not asking for just any hosting or service, I am looking to get a fairly
simple website that runs on free software. I just wrote web hosting because I
know that works and I already tried it. I know that Tumblr allows you to put
up some pages, images and files, but it's not free software, therefore I
refuse to use it.

I tried out Red Matrix, since that seems to be free software, but it doesn't
seem to do what I need it to do. I'm not actually sure how it works, at all.

So if anyone knows any decent and free (as in freedom) website or web
hosting, please share your knowledge, it would be appreciated :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Good free website hosting

2014-10-03 Thread riftyful
No custom design for the free version... well, that is not ideal, but it
would be sufficient. I am a little worried about lack of customization,
though. I prefer not having too many restrictions (By that I mean, the
service offers a lot of them, but most of them are not offered for the free
version.)
I will remember this as an option if I can't find anything better, though.
Thank you :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] is email a communication protocol?

2014-09-21 Thread riftyful

I thought Tox.im was just a website for Tox?
Tox itself, as far as I know, is free software, so yes, I believe it uses
free protocols. But I'm no expert.

Re: [Trisquel-users] FSF and Debian are joining forces to expand and enhance h-node hardware lists

2014-09-12 Thread riftyful

I would like to disagree.

Just because Debian is not a FSF endorsed doesn't mean it cannot help FSF
with doing the right thing. Even if Microsoft helped FSF identify free
sowtware compatible hardware, it would still be a good thing. Yes, it does
not make Microsoft a good company, but that single action is correct and
perfectly fine. It's kind of like how all kinds of organizations contribute
code to GNU/Linux.

I would also like t comment on the There is no middle ground. In my
opinion, completely free distribution is always the best option, but I would
still pick a partially free distribution over, say, Windows. It's not 100%
free, but it's something, and that something is important, too. Debian
itself, as far as I know, is free software. It just makes it easy to install
non-free software, but I like it for it's many qualities.

Re: [Trisquel-users] When is proprietary software bad?

2014-09-04 Thread riftyful
Well, what if someone does smoke, but they do not mind their health being
endangered at all? Sure, that does not make smoking good - I suppose that
over the time people set a common standard that damaging one's health is bad,
so this can apply here. But is it incorrect or unethical?

Let's take PhotoShop as example; unlike Skype, it's a tool a person uses by
themselves. It does not involve other people and the product created using it
can still be free. So in this case, it's only the one person limiting their
own freedom when using the software. Can we call this activity unethical? If
a person is okay with limiting their own freedom (We assume the person is
familiar with proprietary software and it's limitations), is it still wrong
of them to use the software?

Now, I did not really mean bad as in worse. I meant bad as in evil or
ethically wrong.

Thank you for reply.

Re: [Trisquel-users] When is proprietary software bad?

2014-09-04 Thread riftyful
I am pretty sure slavery is worse than proprietary software, seeing as slaves
could not stop being slaves and move to freedom. But I don't mean to
martinet, just making sure this is a loose comparison. Now then, if someone
makes the choice to be a slave and they happy with the way they are treated,
is that wrong? If a person enslaves someone who wishes to be enslaved and is
completely okay with it, and they do not force that upon other people, what
is wrong with that? (Now I am talking in general; things like Skype kind of
do force themselves upon other people, in a way)

[Trisquel-users] When is proprietary software bad?

2014-09-03 Thread riftyful

Hello!

I talked to some people recently, about how Skype is bad because it's
spyware. But they said that the people who use Skype agree to being tracked,
so it's okay. I do not think this case must be exactly true, but it was still
interesting to think about.

As R. M. Stallman said many times, proprietary software is bad because the
user does not control it; instead, the software controls the user. But is
that always true? What if being in control of the software is not important
to the user? What if the user is okay with spying and does not mind sharing
data with someone? While many people would surely see free software as
superior, many also don't really care about their freedom or privacy. If it
does not do harm to the user, is it okay? Or is proprietary software always
wrong? What is your opinion on this, and why?

I have been reading this Forum for some time now, and it's great to find a
community of people who care about free software, talk about freedom related
things and are always willing to help others. Therefore I thought you might
help me get more insight and make a fine opinion on this.

Thank you for your time.
