Re: [Trisquel-users] Privacy: Minimizing your browser fingerprint
Just bookmarked it, I'll definitely be using this. Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Buying a laptop
I've been using a Thinkpad X61 for about 2 years now. I recently switched to Trisquel from Parabola and everything works great for me. I did have to flash a custom BIOS in order to get a free software supported wifi card to work, but it was well worth it (And only cost about $6). I personally found mine on eBay for ~$75, so if you need a laptop with decent processing speed and you're on a nearly-broke budget (like me) I can't say enough good things about it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless laptop
Just wanted to add to this post. If you buy a "half size" PCI card, adapters are available on eBay for ~$3-4 and they will allow you to fit your half-size card in a full size slot. Here's a link to one I've been using (works great!): http://www.ebay.com/itm/331161237621?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 Hopefully the info is helpful to somebody!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel on ARM (2)
I'd never heard of the Improv, thanks for enlightening me! I currently own a few Raspberry Pi's myself and I really love the community surrounding them, but I would definitely prefer a freedom friendly alternative.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Oculus Rift alternative:
This looks cool, I think I'll try to build one myself and see how it works. Seems like a cool weekend project.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Minnowboard
I wonder if it will suffer from the same problems as the Raspberry Pi.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
I'm not a fan of widgets and gizmos so my desktop always looks plain.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
That seems as good a reason as any!
Re: [Trisquel-users] What are (or could be) the dangers of wifi only devices?
I'd say that since there is no such thing as a 100% libre mobile device, the entire device is corrupt from the beginning. There's no way to be certain of what every part of the phone is doing so it is an inherent security risk. Replicant is trying to fix this as much as possible, but even running a libre android distribution won't necessarily be enough. On a side note: Firefox OS (B2G) seems like it may be a viable libre alternative in the near future.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Intel NUC - free software friendly?
Where are you seeing a price for the Intel machine (I might be blind)? I've also really been considering the ThinkPenguin pocket desktops but am always open to a cheaper alternative.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Gerico
If the program is Libre then I would say go ahead! If not I would look for another program that can also get the job done. However I know that isn't always an option if the reason for using the software in the first place is a requirement for your employment.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best choice for a Single-Board-Computer?
It's not a single board computer, but the Pocket Wee from Think Penguin is very small and fully supports libre software (with pretty great specs to boot!) https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-pocket-wee-gnu-linux-desktop I would really love to buy one once I have the extra funds as I'm not in "need" of a new computer at the moment.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is anyone else getting a CPU spikes when you edit anything in Gedit?
In a pinch I use Mousepad instead (gedit is always a little strange), but my goto editor is actually Notepad++. It's a shame I have to use Wine to run it.. I've been waiting for someone with the know-how to create a GNU/Linux port but at least it's free software!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Best choice for a Single-Board-Computer?
Are you sure? From the Pocket Wee page: "Not dependent on binary blobs, or proprietary drivers-firmware" That being said, I've never looked in to the AllWinner boards but I'm definitely interested.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is anyone else getting a CPU spikes when you edit anything in Gedit?
Try getting the .7z "Plug in and play" version from here: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v6.7.5.html In theory you should be able to simply extract the archive and run the .exe file using Wine :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
Whelp due to HDD failure I had to reinstall my whole system today. On the plus side I changed up my look a little bit so here is the newest desktop!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
Just did that today. The HDD that failed came in the Thinkpad X201 I just bought so it needed to be replaced anyway. Luckily I did have all my important files backed up anyway so all I lost were a few wallpapers and a flyer I had been working on.
Re: [Trisquel-users] LibrePlanet 2015 Pictures
These are great. I too want to attend eventually.. maybe next year my schedule (and funds) will align and I'll make the trip.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Linux-Libre Kernel problems
Have you tried running: $ apt-get -f install $ apt-get clean $ apt-get update This may resolve the issue, but I could be wrong.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Linux-Libre Kernel problems
Also what does $ cat /etc/sources.list output?
Re: [Trisquel-users] repos
Have you tried running plain old Debian? It's not very large (or resource hungry) at all. It's also libre by default.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is anyone else getting a CPU spikes when you edit anything in Gedit?
That's great to know! Thanks for pointing that out!
Re: [Trisquel-users] ***POSSIBLE SPAM*** Is webmail a service as a software substitute (SaaSS)?
Technically since your personal email will be stored on an external server you could say that, however I don't believe it is the same as say.. using "cloud" apps. I personally have an email server set up that my family uses though I do use an external service for an alternate email address I check less frequently. Also the FSF has a list of approved webmail systems (I personally use openmailbox.org for my alternate address) so that may be worth looking in to. Ideally, yes, it is best to host your own server but that isn't always a realistic option.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Linux-Libre Kernel problems
Hmm.. Unfortunately I have not had a problem like this so I'm curious how to fix it also (in case I break something later). Sorry my suggestion didn't work! Luckily this forum is full of folks a lot smarter than me who may be able to help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Linux-Libre Kernel problems
Great!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebooted Macbook 2,1
I'm surious to know as well. I seriously considered buying one simply because you can install Libreboot and (most) of the hardware works well with free software. I also thought it'd be funny to stick a GNU over the Aple on the top.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New install for new Trisquel user
Welcome to the community!
[Trisquel-users] Thinkpad x201 Tablet Features
I've got an issue that I'm just not able to figure out after a few days of searching online. I currently use Trisquel on my x201 tablet and it works like a charm (with the addition of a ThinkPenguin dongle for wifi), except Trisquel 7 doesn't want to recognize my touch screen/stylus. I'm an artist, so it would be pretty cool to be able to draw on the laptop directly. I've searched all of the Ubuntu forums I could find and I've applied just about every "fix" that has been recommended but I still can't get the dumb thing to work. Does anyone here also use this Thinkpad model? Or have any idea what I may need to install/configure to get my tablet features working?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Thinkpad x201 Tablet Features
Well somehow I got the stylus to work on the screen (with pressure sensitivity no less!) but I have no clue how to explain what I did.. Now to figure out how to get the extra buttons at the base of the screen to work. It'd be nice to be able to quickly rotate the screen.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Thinkpad x201 Tablet Features
Didn't try that, I'll have to see when I get home tonight. Thanks for the suggestion!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Thinkpad x201 Tablet Features
That's actually the first place I looked, but as far as I can tell Lenovo only hosts drivers for Windows. Maybe for fun I'll try to break it and fix it again just in case someone else comes along with a similar problem.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebooted Macbook 2,1
Hmm that's a little disappointing. If I can get my hands on a cheap one I'll probably still muck around just for the learning experience. The webcam isn't important for my uses anyway, I haven't had a laptop with a webcam for over a decade. The battery didn't used to be important to me, but I've been spoiled with my Thinkpad X201T that gets a reliable 5+ hours of battery (I had a X61 before and the battery only lasted 2 hours at most).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebooted Macbook 2,1
That's a great idea actually! The more info available on h-node the better!
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Laptop Ibm X60 Mini Tablet supported by libreboot?
I hope you're not really considering spending $2,350 on it though? It's a nice machine but the price is crazy when a second hand X60 will run you less than $100.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebooted Macbook 2,1
That's awesome! Great entry I'll definitely be using it as a reference at some point in the future!
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Laptop Ibm X60 Mini Tablet supported by libreboot?
Ah ok I understand, phew!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lavabit founder has stopped using email
That's why the best option is to run your own personal email server. It's not free, but it's very inexpensive.
Re: [Trisquel-users] any 8400gs graphic card?
If you're looking to buy one I definitely recommend this: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/geforce-8400gs-1gb-pci-express-20-video-card-gnulinux-full-low-profile-brackets I personally have one in my desktop and it works beautifully out of the box with 100% libre drivers. 3D acceleration too!
Re: [Trisquel-users] is Laptop Ibm X60 Mini Tablet supported by libreboot?
I felt the same about my Thinkpad X61. I picked it up at a Good Will for less than $30 "broken" and it was my goto computer for almost 5 years! There wasn't anything wrong with it, it was just missing an operating system!
Re: [Trisquel-users] This $9 SoC claims to be "completely open source [sic]"
Ah I just posted about this in the Troll Hole! Sorty didn't see your thread!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Newbro looking for some help
Welcome to Trisquel! To answer two of your questions: No, chances are you won't have 3D acceleration with fully libre drivers unless you're using something like a GeForce 8400. Also, the best way (in my opinion) for window snapping as you described it is to install the XFCE desktop environment. In the settings menu you can find a box labeled "switch desktops when dragging to the edge of the screen" or something like that. Simply uncheck that box and viola: dragging the window to the edge of the screen snaps it to half-screen view. Also if you feel like learning an entirely new window manager, you could try a tiling manager like "Awesome".
Re: [Trisquel-users] Qualcomm Atheros AR242x / AR542X Wireless
That's the best kind of problem to have! Glad you found the naswer to your problem!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Newbro looking for some help
Do they work with full 3D acceleration? I know I had a 660Ti in my desktop when I switched to Trisquel and the Nouveau drivers had great 2D support but 3D was unusable.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't install Trisquel 7 because of Resolution Problems
Have you tried installing using the netinstall iso? It doesn't have a GUI by default.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't install Trisquel 7 because of Resolution Problems
Oh you can install a GUI afterwards. Just to get the system running, the netinstall will give you a working system with command line access. From there just install XFCE4 or LXDE, Gnome, etc. I have no idea if this will actually work, but it's worth a shot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't install Trisquel 7 because of Resolution Problems
Exactly!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
I finally got my Libreboot MacBook Pro (dubbed LibreBook) up and running! The only issue I've got right now is the wifi likes to cut in and out for some reason (as you can see in the second pic).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
According to lspci: Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR5418 Wireless Network Adapter [AR5008E 802.11(a)bgn] (PCI-Express) (rev 01) It seems to work out of the box with free drivers, but not incredibly well. And the second is force of habit. Call me paranoid but I usually blur any sort of identifying information when I take a screenshot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
Yes I've been getting the same problem with Trisquel, Parabola, Debian, and Mint. Before I removed OSX and replaced it with Trisquel, the wifi card never gave me any problems. Granted I only used it long enough to download a Trisquel iso, and I may have looked up a recipe or two. This is also a second hand machine I got for free from a coworker who didn't want it any longer, so I'm wondering if the wireless card could be failing. I've never attempted to replace any components in a MacBook (this is the first I've owned) so I'm not sure how easy it will be. I've tried using my ThinkPenguin usb wifi adapter as well and the signal doesn't cut out when I'm using it, only the internal card. Wired ethernet never loses signal either. Other than the wireless problem I'm loving LibreBoot with Trisquel. My machine somehow feels "cleaner" if that makes sense.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
It's called screenfetch :) https://github.com/KittyKatt/screenfetch-c
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
No problem! The older version gave me a Tux also, but you can modify what distribution's logo is displayed using -D 'distro of choice' or something similar when running the program.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
Wow duh, I didn't even think about doing that! I'll give that a shot when I get home and see if it fixes the issue. I'd love to get it working well because it's the only machine I have that's running a free BIOS. I'd love a libreboot x200 but just can't afford to spend the money on one.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
That didn't seem to work unfortunately. I'll give replacing the card a shot and see if that does the trick. If not I'll have to either live with an external wireless card or use it as a server or something.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebooted Macbook 2,1
I got my Libre Boot MacBook Pro up and running (minus the small wireless dropout issue I mentioned in another thread) and thought you folks might like some pics! I got the sticker to cover the *pple logo from Zazzle. It covers the logo alright, but I made the sticker a little too big so the whole GNU doesn't glow, only his face :'(
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tweak your browser to enhance security and privacy
I will usually recommend people take a look at prism-break.org also. It gives some great alternatives to nonfree programs and some recommended firefox/abrowser/etc addons.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Finding pirated intellectual property - is there a suitable Trisquel-compliant application ?
I'm not sure how to do exactly what you're asking, but I do have a question: Is it so bad that the person is borrowing your content? I'm not sure of the exact details, but is the content something that could easily be published under a CC or GNU FDL (Not sure if that would be a good license for digital content, so it may not be the best choice.) license? Is the context in which the content is being published unethical or misrepresenting you? Maybe I'm a lot more lax with content I create but I believe it is good to use a CC license or even donate it to the public domain so others can benefit.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
That's awesome, what did you do to make it possible?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
Looks great!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
I'll have to borrow this config, it looks great!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Finding pirated intellectual property - is there a suitable Trisquel-compliant application ?
Ah, in this case you're totally right I agree. It's unethical to misrepresent an item you have for sale and treat potential buyers badly. I was originally under the impression they had copied a review/opinion/article for example.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Choice of DE in Graphical Install
That would be helpful. One of the first things I do is update and install XFCE4 because I can't stand the default GNOME desktop.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebooted Macbook 2,1
I'm not sure if there's an option for that, but it would be very nice! I haven't done much messing around other than building and flashing.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What kind of email services are you using and recommend and why?
I like openmailbox.org as well. I've never had any problems with their services.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Gnewsense and Blag
Oh man that was funny. Brick has to be the most secure OS of all time.
[Trisquel-users] Wireless Problem
I'm mostly asking this because I can't for the life of me figure out why my wireless connection keeps dropping while using Trisquel. As I've mentioned in a few threads, I'm using a MacBook Pro 2.1 with Libreboot and Trisquel installed. For some reason, my wireless network connectivity will suddenly drop off causing me to disable/re-enable networking to get back online. Sometimes it will work flawlessly for an hour, other times it will drop every 2-3 minutes. Using an external TP dongle doesn't seem to help either. To troubleshoot the problem, I tried updating my kernel which did not work. Then I tried using different FSF endorsed distributions (and also Debian 8) which also had the same problem. Then out of pure curiosity, I tried using Linux Mint (which as you know is not a completely libre distribution) and the problem seems to be fixed. I've been connected for almost 4 hours now with absolutely no problems.. Do any of you experience similar problems to me? I have a feeling the libre driver for my wireless card may be the problem, which is terrible for me because I do not feel right using a non-free distribution of GNU/Linux but I also have to have a reliable wireless connection. Any ideas?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless Problem
This was my initial thought, but seeing as the card worked perfectly when using Mint it makes me think there isn't anything wrong with the card.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless Problem
According to lspci this is the internal wireless card: Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR5418 Wireless Network Adapter [AR5008E 802.11(a)bgn] (PCI-Express) (rev 01)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless Problem
I don't believe this would be happening since I have flashed a free BIOS and replaced Apple's proprietary BIOS that is shipped with the MacBook.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless Problem
I've also tried using my ThinkPenguin dongle, and I get the same result. That is a surprise to me however, because I use the same dongle on my ThinkPad X201 running Trisquel and I do not have any connectivity problems. And yes, I've tried several kernels with the same results. I'm starting to wonder if somehow Libreboot BIOS is the culprit?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless Problem
That seems to be doing the trick! I don't know if it's actually placebo or not but I browsed all over the net last night for about 3 hours with no connection issues.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
Got tired of my old desktop so I did a little tweaking during my free time this weekend. The only thing I don't really like are the icons I'm using on the panel. Does anyone know of any minimal icon packs that might look a little more polished? Also I've been considering switching to a tiling window manager just to experiment. I used dwm for a little while a few years ago and it works well but has a bit of a steep learning curve.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
It's just plain old XFCE4! I've been very impressed how beautiful XFCE looks recently without having to do a whole lot of tweaking.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
That sounds like something I'd like to try out, thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where do you get your media from?
Bandcamp is great, there is even an option to download music in OGG format!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Privacy Badger
I don't believe it's a violation as it's not requiring you to install Chrome, but the option is there for people who have not yet made a switch to a 100% libre browser or distribution. Sort of like how Notepad++ is libre software, but it's only available for Windows. IMHO that doesn't make it a bad program or violate any guidelines, it's just libre software for a non-free operating system. I may be going about this the wrong way, please let me know if I'm actually wrong in my thinking.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Where do you get your media from?
Thanks for the suggestion!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using MATE for Trisquel 8 was smart, considering that some say Ubuntu MATE is the best version
Hmm I might have to try MATE again. I installed in a few months ago and really could not stand it so I replaced it with XFCE which is what I normally use. Are there any real advantages to using MATE over XFCE or is it mostly just personal preference?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using MATE for Trisquel 8 was smart, considering that some say Ubuntu MATE is the best version
Ah I see. To be honest I'd prefer Cinnamon as I was very fond of it on my Thinkpad X201, but since I've switched to a X200 it doesn't run quite as smoothly so I went back to XFCE.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Suggestions for Low Profile Wifi Dongle?
Here is the lowest profile dongle I've had luck with: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb It's really a very good quality piece of equipment too and works "out-of-the-box" with any GNU/Linux distribution I've tried.

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install GPT on BIOS & full disk encryption (with boot)?
I'm pretty sure MagicBanana was helping you... by telling you what you want is not currently possible. It's obviously not what you want to hear but there's nothing we (or you) can do about it, unless you add designing an entirely new way for computers to function as we know it to your growing list of projects that is.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Which multifunctional printer do you recommend me?
I have one of these myself: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/hp-color-laser-printer-w-80211-wifi-ethernet-gnu-linux It works very well plug-and-play with Trisquel and Debian. I also have this model: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/hp-deskjet-all-one-tpe-hpdsk1055 This one is used less often as it prints somewhat slowly, but it is very reliable and usable.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lenovo thinkapds(LibreBoot )buying guide
I have a X200 that I found on eBay pre-installed with Libreboot. I also purchased an extended battery and it gives me the best battery life of any laptop I've ever owned! It's really plenty fast for daily usage. Compiling sometimes bogs it down but that is true of most computers in my personal experience. It's a great rugged laptop that's small enough to take really anywhere.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 is STILL not out yet?
Normally I wouldn't say this, but... If you're so disgusted with the way Trisquel is being developed, why don't you build your own distribution? Fork Ubuntu yourself and make, I dunno, t3gbuntu and see how quickly you're able to roll out releases on your own working for donations. Then deal with impatient users demanding more more more, faster faster faster. Just my opinion. If you want something cutting edge why not use Parabola?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lenovo thinkapds(LibreBoot )buying guide
I really hate how so many of these shops drive up the price of their equipment. I know it takes time and effort to install these operating systems, but the price they're asking for a Galazy S2 is insane when you can buy them for almost 1/4 of the price elsewhere and install the OS yourself. Same with the X200 libreboot laptops. In 2017 there's no reason to purchase a dual core machine for upwards of $400 USD. I believe this turns people OFF of using free software because the machines are not on par with other cheaper technology and (as far as the phones go) they are missing features believed to be standard such as wifi. I understand that these are mostly small shops, and I also understand that using free software isn't about convenience it's about freedom, but how can we expect to bring free software to the public eye when the recommended equipment is outlandishly expensive?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
I got a "new" desktop from my local Good Will to use as a server. I figured I'd have some terminal fun while I was setting it up :) On a side note: If any of you live near a Good Will Electronics reseller they usually have some great equipment for next to nothing if you're working on a project that doesn't require top-of-the-line hardware.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
Thanks for stealing my thunder SuperTramp! :P That desktop is gorgeous!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your Desktop!
Nice! Thanks for all the details!
Re: [Trisquel-users] What games do you play on your computers
I'm a bad example because I still do play and enjoy non-free games. Nothing really brand new, but I regularly will play Quake 2, Unreal Tournament, Starcraft, etc. I know as far as ethics go I'm breaking the rules but I do really love playing libre games like Burger Space and FreeDink.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Terminal Split Windows
I personally use dvtm (from official repos). I like doing a lot of work in the terminal and dvtm works exactly like a tiling window manager within the terminal. The controls are similar to the window manager dwm (which is my favorite tiling manager).
Re: [Trisquel-users] new menber
Ah RMS.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Free Software t-shirts
I like them!
Re: [Trisquel-users] What games do you play on your computers
I do enjoy Xonotic and I guess I already do use the libre engine for Quake 2 so that's only nonfree in regards to art assets (which I'm fine with personally). I played BosWars, but it just doesn't hold a candle to Starcraft and when it comes down to it I figure (again, NOT recommending nonfree software) playing Starcraft once in awhile after I've been stressed all day isn't going to be the end of me. Now if there's ever a libre remake, I'll be all over it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What games do you play on your computers
Not that I'm recommending nonfree software, but I use Wine.
Re: [Trisquel-users] cyph encrypted softphone is saass?
I don't know much about this service (mostly on account of the FAQ not being complete), but it looks to be nonfree and is definitely saass. I wouldn't trust it. You're probably better off using a libre program like Mumble for chatting.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Watching dvds on Trisquel
Why would watching DVDs using GNU/Linux be illegal in the USA? I watch DVDs on my computer all the time and don't see any reason I shouldn't be allowed to do so.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Watching dvds on Trisquel
Oh wow I didn't realize I have been a criminal for the last 10 years or so! Maybe I should go buy an orange jumpsuit or a ball and chain to complete the look :)
