[tslug] Re: SCSI and Linux
I have used Adaptec AHA-2940U2W and ASC-29160 controllers in my linux machines over the past few years. I haven't had any trouble. I have used ATA drives before and since and while I can't say that I can notice a difference in seek times, the overall performance does seem to be better. I haven't done any objective testing. Apart from the various performance benefits, it's much easier (possible!) to find HDs with 5 year warranties; I think it's less likely that I will have to deal the hassle of HD failure with SCSI devices. I've heard good things about ATTO (http://www.attotech.com/) and I'm considering picking up one of their controllers, but so far my only experience is with Adaptec. What interface cards, hard drives, etc. that have worked for you with Linux? With SCSI hard drives, is there a very noticeable speed increase in hard drive access time? I'm really interested in what everyone has to say about this. Joshua K. [tslug] Re: Printer troubles
Speaking of CUPS... My CUPS says that it is unable to convert file 0 to printable format whenever I try to print something (e.g., a CUPS test page or a PostScript or text file). The printer in question is a PostScript printer (HPLJ1200). Seems to me there shouldn't be any need for conversion of PostScript files since the printer can interpret PS on its own... But I *did* install espgs. I also looked up the text file filter in the mime types and conversions files, and I verified that the filter (texttops) is world-executable. I turned on debug-level logging for CUPS, but it doesn't elaborate further on the unable to convert...to printable format message. Suggestions? Should I post some log [excerpts] or config files [excerpts]? Thanks, Sean - To get off this list, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with Subject: unsubscribe -

Basic authentication over SSL? -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Caleb Jorden Sent: Monday, August 04, 2003 3:50 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [tslug] Re: Mozilla on the Free Software CD? You can't update your directory information at search.truman.edu unless you use IE. (We wrote this ourselves, so I suppose there's no vender to lean on here but us.) FYI: This information can be modified inside of Pipeline. After you log in, you can click on Truman Searches and then Edit Information on the left. The reason that modification on search.truman.edu does not work in linux is that it, as well as some other sites, uses NTLM authentication. NTLM authentication is supported in Mozilla in recent builds, but only in Windows. The reason that NTLM authentication is used is that it is more secure than basic authentication, which sends credentials in plain text over http. I do not have an answer to how we could easily and securely authenticate linux clients, I only hope that mozilla for linux will soon support NTLM. - To get off this list, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with Subject: unsubscribe - - To get off this list, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with Subject: unsubscribe -
[tslug] Troubleshooting X
I'm having trouble logging into Linux Mandrake 9.1 with X. The login window lets me attempt to login as smfoy, and then displays my desktop background briefly before returning to the login window. I can login as root. It looks like it is about the right size (1064985), too, judging by the other vmlinuz-* in that dir. Did you use make zImage or make bzImage?
