Not sure how much time Aaron spends browsing this message board these
days, but he posted a few thoughts on Roger Ebert's passing publicly
on his Facebook, so I doubt he'd mind me copying and pasting them here
(he also posted a photo of himself with Gene and Roger):

On Oct. 22, 1994, I was thrilled to receive a message that Roger had
joined my email newsletter list. A few hours later, I got this: "I
have received my first issue of Late Show News and enjoyed it
immensely! Where has this publication been all my life? Thanks! Roger
Ebert." That, as much as my first check from the Village Voice, told
me I had arrived. How many more nice things he said about my work over
the years. Business gurus and spiritual leaders preach generosity but
Roger, that old idealist-skeptic, practiced it every day over a
career. RIP.

I have watched him on TV since his first year on PBS, and have followed him
online since he first went online with his reviews with the Suntimes. I
sent in a dozen or so Answer Man questions, a couple of which he followed
up with a personal email note to me about - nothing earth shattering, but

It is hard to see your description of him before before 2010 as a "cool
little secret", since by then I and the large majority of people I know had
been following him closely for more than three decades. I have been
inspired by how he dealt with his medical issues, and enjoyed learning more
about him and his family, but I guess when I think of him it will always be
most prototypically not as your 2.0 version, but more than 1.0, especially
sitting in the balcony, and inviting us to see him at the movies.

I'm wary of people who claim they knew something before they "hit the big time"
as a point of pride, but Ebert's the card I'd play.

I always felt there were two version of Ebert. Ebert 1.0 was everything through
about 2006 or so (when he lost his voice and dropped from mainstream public
view). But at the same time that Ebert was disappearing, Ebert 2.0 was
developing, where it wasn't all about the movies. That's when he launched the
blog and jumped onto the social networks and really became what a lot of
younger people probably think of him as, and that's when I went from being
aware of him to following him. As someone who was never much of a film fan, I
could devour anything he wrote (much like I do with Bill Simmons and the NBA).

I always thought Chris Jones’s Esquire piece in 2010 was the point where Ebert
2.0 went from “cool little secret” to “superstar”, where he wrote whatever the
hell he wanted to, and it was always good, and the rest of the world found out
how incredible he was.

[TV orNotTV] Hoda Kotb thinkin' bout movin' on

2013-04-04 Thread Bob in Jersey
As the fifth anny of her teaming with Kathie Lee on *Today* comes up
tomorrow (5), EW has her
"quietly meeting with studios and pitching herself for new hosting gigs,
such as a daytime talk show." A friend denies, and NBC shuts up. -- BOB

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Late-night upheaval: A six-night-a-week issue

2013-04-04 Thread M-D November
I would think his job as an executive at Bravo would make Andy Cohen a
non-starter (plus, yes, he's too HELLO! for the fratboy 12:35 audience).
Would love to see Tyler get the gig - yeah, she's been on The Talk, but I
think her standup and "Archer" easily counterbalances).

It'll be interesting to see where NBC goes next, since they're not only
counterprogramming Craig, but also the late rerun of TDS.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Late-night upheaval: A six-night-a-week issue

2013-04-04 Thread Mark Jeffries
Meanwhile, this morning Curt Wagner, TV critic at the Chicago Tribune's
young demo tab RedEye, made some suggestions for "Late Night" besides
Meyers, which he seems not enthused about the possibility: Andy Cohen
(part of the NBCU family, but I think too Bravo and too gay for the bros),
Aisha Tyler (yeah, there should be non-white and women late-night hosts and
she would be great at it, but I think that doing the Chenbot show takes
away the hipness quotient "Archer" gives her), Amy Poehler (another NBCU
family member, but too big for late-night and besides, Sikula would burst)
and "How Was Your Week" podcaster Julie Klausner (there will now be a pause
while everyone says "who?").
