Friday's are notoriously NOT for new/original news or talk programing
in the world of cable TV. Shows go to Friday nights to die.

In other words, perfect for a Baldwin.

Re: [TV orNotTV] The Story Of MTV And Stephen Colbert

2013-08-08 Thread Adam Bowie
They've been around for ages, but for a number of years now, they've only
appeared in costume with the helmets. And they've not done broadcast
interviews. They've given written interviews - but that's all from what I
can tell.

Their new album is excellent though, and Get Lucky isn't even the best
track on it.

Re: [TV orNotTV] The Story Of MTV And Stephen Colbert

2013-08-08 Thread Joe Hass
The short version: Daft Punk was known for their house and electronica
music (I have a couple of their CD and they make regular appearances on my
playlists). They wrote and recorded the score for the Tron remake in 2010.
For "Random Access Memory", they decided to make a shift and pull off a
pretty impressive marketing campaign for "Get Lucky", which is how they
became one of those "eight-year overnight successes".

As for the significance of the helmets: they're real people in there, and
what they do (especially with live shows) is not something you could just
have someone else play the role (think Barney Gumbel as Krusty The Clown).
There's another electronic music performer called deadmau5 (pronounced
"dead mouse") who regularly DJs in an oversized head, and it'd be pretty
damned obvious if it wasn't him.

Interesting note: "Daft Punk’s planned appearance had already been a source
of stress for “Colbert” since the group was only willing to appear in
costume, and not perform or sit for an interview."

Is this saying that even if the appearance had gone as planned they would
not have sung their song, and just showed up (without even doing an
interview)? Why would MTV even have objected to that? If their costume is
those weird helmets on their heads, and they were not going to sing or

Watching the diatribe a second time, and including Colbert's remarks from

outlet), I'm swayed by the argument that the screwing by Viacom really did
happen, and the video was in the works ahead of time (and repurposed).

Right - I think the question here though is, was the advance work in support of
Daft Punk (I think it was, once I figured out that DP was real), or, as Jon
suspects, were they always planning on having someone different on in the end?

Sky has a fairly international cast of anchors anyway, so aside from some
localised graphics, they're probably set.

I was thinking of something like this. Fox should definitely lean on Sky
Sports then; TNT will be using a lot of ESPN resources this week at the
PGA, and ESPN uses a lot of NBC resources when they have shared coverage.
They could stick Joe Buck in the Host chair alongside who ever does the Sky
Sports anchoring, and give it the face of Fox Sports with the guts of Sky.

2013-08-08 Thread Adam Bowie
Sky Sports in the UK is a sister company of Fox, and they almost
exclusively cover golf in the UK. only the Open is on the BBC, alongside
shared coverage of the Masters. Everything else is Sky.

And they do an excellent job. I think they're effectively host broadcaster
for much of the European Tour, and they put significant additional
resources into their PGA coverage beyond simply taking the US network feed.
That's especially so for the majors.

So it'd be easy - and relatively safe - just to have the whole production
side over to Sky. Whether Fox would *want* to do that is another question.
