[TV orNotTV] Re: Anybody here use TitanTV.com?

2014-04-28 Thread K.M. Richards
Yes. It does that if you set it to six-hour format and have ad blocking
turned on. If you turn your ad blocker off, you'll see that Titan puts a
huge ad to the right of the grid. For some reason it doesn't mess with the
default four-hour grid format.

Presumably with the movie songs included, yes, but that's not new. Those

And it should be pointed out that Osnes was already an Equity cardholder
who was working at Minnesota's Chanhassen Dinner Playhouse, the same place
where Amy Adams started, when she entered into the show. I would think
that she would've made it to New York sooner or later--the reality comp
just got her there sooner.

Meanwhile, someone on FB has suggested Pharrell Williams as Danny and
Janelle Morae as Sandy, which is definitely an interesting way to go.

Inferior... and not really the right message for modern teenage girls.
Also, as I once tried to tell a school principal when she insisted I show
the film to middle school students as a reward, it really isn't
family-friendly entertainment.

I'm probably in the minority with my opinions (who am I kidding... I am in
the minority), but if there has to be televised Broadway musicals, and if
they aren't going to use actual Broadway talent, the only way this concept
works is with no-holds-barred stunt-casting. Katy Perry as Sandy, one of
those One Direction kids as Danny, Lady Gaga as Rizzo, another of those One
Direction kids as Kenickie, etc. It still isn't something I'd watch, but if
Fox is just phoning in a musical so they can say they did a musical (kind
of like they did Greed just so they could say they had a gameshow like
Who wants to be a millionaire?), the least they can do is attach some
names.

To the larger issue, music specials notoriously underperform in the
ratings, and since Fox's primetime is only two hours long, a musical wipes
out an entire evening's programing for the network. A special based on a 35
year old film isn't exactly aimed at a desired demographic for advertisers.

[TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Last Week Tonight

2014-04-28 Thread Kevin M.
Part Bugle, part Daily Show, with a sprinkle of sketch comedy. I laughed a
lot, but much of what the show is can be seen/heard elsewhere, so John
Oliver is the only real selling point. Frankly, I'd have preferred if
Oliver periodically cut away to Andy Zaltzman (as he did in his stand up
special), but I guess that's too much to ask for. Besides, as a
kinky-haired redhead myself, I know Andy isn't exactly TV-friendly.

[TV orNotTV] netflix - geek stuff

2014-04-28 Thread Eastick, Doug
While netflix has been in the media on net neutrality, etc I have
always been a TCP/IP internet geek.
Over a year ago I learned that netflix was promoting some hardware that
would get stored/sync'd data closer to customers at ISP locations - they
called it OpenConnect. If your netflix says SuperHD on some content,
then you are close enough (internet hop-wise) to an OpenConnect box.

https://www.netflix.com/openconnect

Netflix will provide a rack-mounted server with 100 TB (terabytes!!!) of
fresh content pre-loaded, plus 1 GB of solid-state-drive (SSD) drives.
I have no idea what the commerical agreement is; but its freaking drooly
wrt hardware.

I just read the deployment guide for it. not too technical (in my
mind, but I'm an geeky engineer that loves TCP/IP stuff :) ).

http://oc.nflxvideo.net/docs/OpenConnect-Deployment-Guide.pdf

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Craigyferg calls it quits

2014-04-28 Thread M-D November
I think it's more likely that Geoff has mechanical trouble from time to
time because he wasn't designed with his current use in mind. As Doug
mentioned, he started life essentially as a 360 Systems Instant
Replayhttp://www.360systems.com/audio_instantreplay.htmlconnected to a
skeleton. I'd imagine that in his original incarnation,
Geoff's mouth, neck (then) one good arm probably saw about 1/8 as much
use on a nightly basis as they do now that JRT is providing a live voice
every night. Grant has given Geoff some incremental upgrades over time
(the second working arm, most notably...although his genitals are still
stuck at customs), but short of pulling Geoff from service for significant
upgrades or making a Geoff 2.0, I don't imagine Geoff's fragility would
change anytime soon.

I don't know how determinative it is, but Geoff is credited to JRT (voice)

trouble from time to time is that it's tough for Grant to find time to come
down from San Francisco to perform minor maintenance.

I'm curious whose intellectual property is Geoff Peterson? From what I
gather in his podcasts, JRT will be content to hang up the voice, but if he
wasn't, could Geoff do a road show?

There's no question that Osnes is talented, but to suggest she'd get an

I know a lot of people who got their AEA or SAG cards early in their

Re: [TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Last Week Tonight

2014-04-28 Thread M-D November
Finally got a chance to watch Episode 1 tonight on HBOGO (dealing with some
family stuff last night and forgot to set the DVR). I laughed a lot, but
yes, it did feel a bit like TDS Weekend. Which isn't necessarily a bad
thing. I think bringing a touch of the familiar works for Oliver, because
it gives the audience what they expect to see, and got the show off to a
hot start. I'd have personally preferred a set that didn't evoke TDS quite
so much, and the format was a little too familiar, but now that he's
established, Oliver can start tweaking the format over the coming weeks.

On Monday, April 28, 2014 7:42:02 PM UTC-4, PGage wrote:

Mostly agree with Kevin, though I would like to see more Bugle, and a

that it played like the 5th episode of TDS for the week, which was pretty
close. He does not need Zaltzman (though I like him, and their dynamic) but
I think he does benefit from the conversational dynamic. But I will
definitly record, and watch, it every week.

Part Bugle, part Daily Show, with a sprinkle of sketch comedy. I laughed

Oliver periodically cut away to Andy Zaltzman (as he did in his stand up
special), but I guess that's too much to ask for. Besides, as a
 kinky-haired redhead myself, I know Andy isn't exactly TV-friendly.

In addition to Open Connect, which is awesome and kind of mirrors what
Cable companies are already doing for On-Demand stuff from what I
understand, Netflix is also looking into peer-to-peer network to get around
ISPs slowing down their traffic:
